See originally, unpopular opinion, I thought that either tommy or tubbo dying wouldn't happen or shouldn't happen bc they already did death with wilbur and story wise it's just not sexy to reuse plot twists but i now actually do think that wilburs and tommys deaths are equally fulfilling
Because with Wilbur, everyone witnessed it, they all knew exactly when and why and how it happened so therefore there was no need to discuss it and get over feelings for it. Wilbur went out with a bang. That was the experience.
But Tommy? Tommy died in the hands of his abuser in a room that held everything he could ever fear. No one saw his death or just any of the events that lead up to it, they don't know, and that's the glory of it, because we get to witness people's reactions.
Tommy's death is something so entirely human, you know, because there's no pause button for death.

So we got:
Mark the Magic 8 Ball, Subject: Wishes/Magic
After springing to life when Yellow asked if “Magic was real”, He’s very upbeat yet very stern when it comes to his lessons, he will literally grant you whatever wish you’d like but will not revert whatever consequences the wish brings. His pyramid has the ability to reveal what the future brings at a glance, but it drains him at times when certain requests are made (ex. what’s gonna happen In 15 years…)
for the Trio, Yellow wishes for a unicorn (which ends horribly wrong), and Bird wishes for fancy clothes (which ends poorly as well), and at the end, Red wishes for everything to be as it was before, and Mark agreed, disappearing after the wish was granted.
Next is Jaír the Mirror (Subject: Past reflections, bad luck)
Red and Bird decide to bring Yellow to a small park nearby, but beforehand, they have to clean up some leaves that have fallen outside. Red takes up the job while Bird cleans around the house, leaving Yellow in his room, preparing his mittens and scarves and jacket. As he was, he found a small mirror and decided to play around with his hair. But as he does so, he nearly drops the mirror, but thankfully catches it. He sighs in relief, only to hear a voice say, “That was a close one, surely you must be relieved.”
Jaír then goes on about how mirrors are used, and how reflecting on past decisions are similar to the reflection of a mirror. He then whispers about breaking a mirror, and the superstition around it. Yellow is now paranoid, and tries to leave the room to find Duck and Red, but Jaír lures Yellow back, and tells him to look at him. As he hesitantly does so, he can see the body of Red and Duck, lying lifelessly on the ground behind him. This makes him panic, and feel guilty, hence he hasn’t been able to check up on them to see if they were ready or ok. Jaír taunts poor Yellow, but soon, Yellow decides he’s had enough, and throws Jaír on the ground, smashing him into bits. Things get quiet, as Yellow is left recollecting his thoughts…
Before spirits began to dash out of the broken mirror.
The Spirits, being those of Red and Bird. Distressed and angry, they begin to fly around Yellow, blaming him for their deaths and tormenting him, and soon, Yellow curls up in a ball, and sobs, begging for forgiveness.
And soon, everything goes quiet.
Yellow looks up, and realizes that the sun was now filling his room with light; as he slowly sat up. He heard footsteps, and the door opened to reveal,
Red and Bird. Their eyes filled with relief and worry as they ran towards Yellow and embraced him into a big hug. The only thing Yellow managed to say was,
“I’m sorry.” And
“You saw him too, didn’t you.”
Now! Coronia the Crown!! (Subject: Manners and Royalty/Leadership)
The trio was playing a small game of ‘dress up’, as they moved onto the theme of medevil ages, and Bird decided to be a knight, Red was a servant and Yellow, wanted to be a king. He digged around in a large box filled with clothing and found a Shiny crown, and a red cape. As soon as he finished dressing himself up, he beamed with pride and said,
“I am the king!”
And no sooner than later..
“You hear that? He’s the King!”
The three look up and see that the Crown now had eyes, a mouth, and arms, as it patted Yellows head and began to sing.
His lesson teaches the three about the medieval times and what it meant to be royal, as well as the manners and prom and proper way to be seen. He goes on about how the king is seen as perfect and loving, his knight brave and modest, and his servant loyal and trusting. They are all soon in full-apparel, Bird in shining armor, Red in servant apparel and Yellow covered with red and purple clothing, with jewels and diamonds all over.
But things go downhill once Yellow becomes too kind; he lets Bird take what he would like as well as Red and his ‘people’, and Coronia lectures him about how he had to keep his riches and keep limits; if not then he would be used. Yellow understands quickly and stops everyone, which soon leads to a angered mob (excluding red and bird, who tried to fiend them off)
Coronia then tells Yellow that in order to be king, punishment must be apart of the lifestyle. If anyone dared disobey him, they’d be punished, or even worse; executed. Coronia forced Red and Bird to grab people and bring them to a guillotine, but they refused, believing that it was now being taken way to far. Coronia, unpleased and with a snap of his finger, suddenly had Red beneath the guillotine, tied up and ready to be executed. Yellow stopped and threw Coronia down, and quickly ran over to help his friend from the guillotine. And this angered Coronia. He said, that he’d either execute red or bird, or execute the king.
But as he reached towards the three, he suddenly began to glitch out, and soon, the three were poofed back into their home; the guillotine gone, the armor and suit, gone.
All that was left, was the red cloak.
The crown was no where to be seen.
Now we got Palomi the Phone!! (Subject: Self-comparison and self-esteem)
So, one day, Red finds a small cell phone in a cabinet, and decided to show Bird and Yellow. He tried to turn it on, but, it was dead.
Interested in finding out what the phone could do, he went off to find a charger in the cabinets.
But as he did, a ding came from the living room, with a small gasp of shock and admiration.
Red walked back and realized that the phone was now in Yellows hands, the screen on with a bright, glowing face staring up at Yellow.
“Hello! What can I help you with today?”
And this begins her lesson. She tells the trio about social media and the cliques online, and soon tells them about the comparison of fashion, looks and lifestyle that many do inspired by social media. And soon, this brings the three under some sort of spell. Red is determined to capture every moment with Bird and Yellow. Bird is determined to be as good looking as possible, and Yellow is determined to become stronger and gain muscles. Palomi supports them on their journey, giving them tips and advice, but soon, things go bad. Palomi scolds Bird for wearing bland clothing; she yells at Red for not cleaning up the house more for photos, and is disappointed in Yellows attempts to exercise. She then leads them overboard, refusing to let Yellow eat much of anything and exercise day and night, making Red decorate everything to look like a perfect household, and making Bird spend hundreds an hundreds on clothes and make-up. Soon, Bird decides that enough is enough. He goes over to Palomi, but she quickly takes a snapshot of him, which blinds him for a second. She then yells. “HA! You’re reputation! You’re reputation is TAINTED!! Say goodbye to your followers dearie, they’ve ALL seen your true colors…” She then taunts all of them as the three receive hateful messages and comments, and it drives Bird and Yellow into a hysteria. But Red? He barricades through alll the hate and comments and manages to shut Palomi down, permanently. And soon, they are in the living room once again, the phone in Red’s hand. Bird was now in his regular clothing, Yellow was now fed and nourished, and the house was as perfect as it was before.
Red then goes over and places the phone back, locking it away permanently. 
And finally?? We have?? Shimara the Soap Bar (Subject: Hygiene/ Habits)
One day, the three are doing some cleaning around the house, and Yellow is all finished with what he had to do (make his bed, fold his clothes, etc.) and he just starts to play with his hair, a small habit that he has. He then begins to hear, humming, coming from the bathroom? The hums were a high pitched sound, it was surely not Red or Duck..
Yellow went on to investigate, and soon saw that the small bar of soap was humming. As soon as Yellow stepped in, she turned around and smiled. 
“My apologies dear! Humming is a habit of mine…whats yours?”
So this is the start of her lesson, and Yellow follows her as she goes over to Red and then to Bird, gathering the three and teaching them about habits.
She begins with the good habits, such as exercising at a good rate every day, eating a balanced diet, cleaning, etc. and soon, the trio follow her habits.
But then she brings up the negative habits, such as nail-biting, skipping meals, etc. and the trio begin to obtain those habits. Yellow with nail biting, Bird with skipping meals and Red being an excessive coffee drinker. The effects soon hit the three hard, and they try to find a way to stop these bad habits. Shimara simply tells them that there isnt a way to stop them, that theyll be stuck with these habits forever, before humming back into the bathroom, her hums becoming quieter and quieter.
Yellow seemed to follow her, while Red and Bird tried to fight off the urges of the habits, before the music died down, and soon, everything was silent.
Red no longer had the urge to drink coffee. Bird was now eating a comfortable, healthy meal.
But Yellow, was gone.

For most people, pain comes and goes. It can be agonizing and immobilising, lasting for days, weeks, months, or even years. Yet we can feel safe in the knowledge that the ache were experiencing isnt our permanent state of being. But this isnt the suit for everyone.
You never imagine yourself waking up one day and simply being in pain that will never run, says Amelia Butlin, the 26 -year-old illustrator behind an Instagram account documenting the experiences of those living with chronic pain and illness: @cantgoout_imsick .
With few advocates or resources online, Butlin has decided to use her love of art to create a community for women who want to share their experience with chronic conditions and the crippling, never-ending pain associated with them.
Earlier this year, Butlin began describing portraits of celebrities like Selma Blair, Lena Dunham, and Sarah Hyland, who have spoken out about their experiences with multiple sclerosis( MS ), endometriosis, and kidney dysplasia, respectively. Underneath her portrait, Dunham commented Wow I just cried thank you. Since then, the illustrator has been inundated with messages from people who want to share their own tales, encouraging her to start a series she calls #BelieveUs.
[ Living with chronic pain] is one of these things that is so isolating, she explains over coffee at her local tavern in Fulham, London. Unless you have engaged with the online community of sufferers you would think it’s only you, because youre made to feel that way.

Butlin was hospitalised with chronic meningitis in 2013 after her first year examining History of Art at the University of Leeds. But as she moaned into a hospital pillow to stop herself hollering from her migraines, she had no idea the ache would stay with her for this long. You dont imagine that could happen, she says. Butlin has now been diagnosed with Postural tachycardia syndrome( PoTS ), a nervous system disorder that causes lightheadedness and fainting, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes( EDS ), a connective tissue ailment, and fibromyalgia, which causes all-over body pain, headaches, extreme fatigue, and problems with mental process( also known as fibro-fog, according to the NHS ). In her experience, Butlin has found that if one thing isn’t working in your body, then the rest of your body kind of falls apart.
While one in three individuals in Britain suffer from some degree of chronic pain or discomfort, as the Ramsay Health Care hospital group reports, it remains an under-researched and dramatically underfunded area. And one that affects women seriously. In fact, as NRS healthcare reports, fibromyalgia has nearly two million sufferers in the UK alone, and 80 -9 0 percent of those people are women.

Lady Gaga spoke about her battle with fibromyalgia as she prepared for the Super Bowl halftime show in her 2017 Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two. It became an important moment for discussions around the illness, as the vocalist proved the psychological and physical suffering on camera for all to see.
Butlin explains how she had to go through a grieve process for the person she was before the ache began. Because you’re never going to be that person again, she says, so “youve got to” grieve yourself and attain the most of this new life that you have now because it’s merely not the same. It’s hard. It’s almost like the death of yourself.
Because fibromyalgia cannot be detected in blood tests or scans, and patients appear normal and healthy, get the correct diagnosis poses a huge problem. Butlin explains that people are often disbelieved by both doctors and loved ones, which can come with serious psychological repercussions for the sufferer.

We all grow up going to the doctor, they give you antibiotics and then you’re fine, Butlin says. But thats not been the case at all. I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD from all of the trauma I’ve had going to the doctors and people not believing you and saying it’s in your head.
By starting her illustration project, Butlin has realised she is not alone in feeling this route. One woman, whose story is shared in a caption under the title Believe Rose , said: I have been misdiagnosed and written off as crazy too many times to count. I was sent to a locked eating disorder division when I was 17 because my doctors presumed I simply didnt want to eat. In reality I was in excruciating pain and vomiting every time I feed. I was told it was bulimia, anorexia, anxiety, depression, psychosomatic ache, all before they would admit they couldnt figure out what was wrong. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and its not in my head. My pain is real. My dislocations are real. My vomiting and nausea are real. It is all real.

Reading these tales about various chronic illnesses, it becomes clear just how much some people have had to fight to be believed. Jameisha,who has been diagnosed with the inflammatory autoimmune illnes Lupus, thinks its a combination of a lack of knowledge on their part, as well as my age and gender. Theres often a patronising tone, as if I don’t know much about my own body. She continues in her caption: But its not just physicians. Its also the stranger that assumes Im young and healthy enough to take the stairs, or the family member that only doesnt think Im trying hard enough.

Claudia,who has been diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis( ME)/ chronic fatigue syndrome( CFS ), as well as fibromyalgia and hyper-mobility joint syndrome, is also quoted saying: I would report constant muscle stiffness, hip ache, back ache since I was a teen and be met with silence. I have self-diagnosed my entire life and been my own physician because no one heard me.

Even Selma Blair, who Butlin has illustrated, was told the reason she was feeling depleted all the time was because she was a single mom . It took her collapsing at the doctors for them to give her the tests they needed to be diagnosed with MS.

Sufferers of endometriosis( a condition where tissue that are usually lines the inside of your uterus grows outside your uterus, often affecting your ovaries, fallopian tubings, and the tissue lining your pelvis) are some of the worst hit, with an average diagnosis time of 7.5 years in the UK. Yet figures shows that one in 10 people with a uterus suffer from the endometriosis.

For those shown on Butlins account, chronic illness has presented two debilitating problems: the physical pain of their condition and the emotional burden of trying to convince others it exists. In a similar way to the # MeToo movement, Butlin hopes # BelieveUs will encourage those living with chronic conditions to find strength in numbers and speak out about the mistreatment they have faced, with women finally saying Im not going to live in pain in silence.

From Toy Story 2 to Under the Skin, writers pick the cinematic moments that made them cry and explain why. Spoilers ahead
Aunt Lucys trip, Paddington 2

On the face of it, Paddington is a fairly broad kids film franchise about the hijinks of a CGI bear, and so probably shouldnt make a grown human cry hot, salty tears. But that description ignores the fact that Paddington is a really, really well-made kids film franchise about the hijinks of a CGI bear, one that completely gets the pathos of its central character, a little lost immigrant searching for something resembling a family. Both films ably tug at the heartstrings, but the second film got me sniffling as early as 15 minutes in when Paddington imagines giving his only living relative, Aunt Lucy, a tour around London, something that in reality is impossible as shes stuck thousands of miles away in darkest Peru. When at the end of the film spoiler alert Aunt Lucy arrives on the Brown familys doorstep and she and Paddington hug, I completely, unapologetically lost it. Lord knows what surprises Paddington 3 has planned for my tear ducts. GM
When She Loved Me, Toy Story 2

Just before writing this, I put When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 on YouTube once again, just to check. Yep. Just as always, I choke up, in the same abject, lip-wobbling, head-bowed way. It still has that terrible power.
When She Loved Me is the song written by Randy Newman and sung by the devastated toy cowgirl Jessie and in fact performed, beautifully, on the soundtrack by Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. The song is Jessies way of telling Woody why she has grimly decided to submit to the airless world of the toy museum, because it is better than the inevitable heartbreak and delusion of loving a fickle human child. She reveals her anguish that her owner, Emily, has fallen out of love with her outgrown her, in fact. As Emily entered the world of adolescence, pop music and boys, Jessie was left under the bed and finally dumped.
When I first saw this scene and misled by the size disparity between toy and owner I thought it was a parable for a childs anxiety over being abandoned by the parent. But now that I am a parent I can see the truth which is completely the opposite way around. It is about the parents fear of being abandoned by the child: the terrible fear, actually the terrible certainty, that the kid one day wont want to play with you. They will grow up and want something else. This song is utterly devastating. It is modern cinemas equivalent of the Vesti La Giubba aria from Pagliacci the tragic clown smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. Im afraid to watch it too often. I dont want to break down over and over again. But I also want to preserve its power over me. PB
Ruths death, Fried Green Tomatoes

In many respects, Fried Green Tomatoes is not a movie for the modern age. It is a story about racism in the deep south told largely by way of eliciting our sympathies for wealthy white characters; it is a story about a lesbian relationship that had to slide its lesbian relationship in unnoticed, by presenting it as a very close friendship fulfilled by food fights, poker games and heads leaning meaningfully on shoulders. But I am deeply fond of this 1991 Sunday afternoon classic. Ive seen it more times than is healthy, and so I know exactly what is coming and when, and yet am still unable to resist the inevitable guttural sobbing that comes with the death scene.
There are plenty of teasers for it, too: Buddy on the train tracks, even Mrs Threadgoode talking about the death of her adult son. Nothing, however, can prepare the viewer for Ruth asking Idgie to tell her the old story about the frozen lake thats now somewhere over in Georgia. It doesnt so much pull on heartstrings as play a full symphony on them, and its devastating. As Sipsey puts it, a lady always knows when to leave. RN
The rooftop dance, Eat Pray Love

While I was repelled by the mere existence of the Eat Pray Love book, I found something strangely charming about its big-screen translation. It was a mixture of glossy food porn, glossy travel porn and glossy Julia Roberts emoting porn (she remains one of the best fake criers in Hollywood) all wrapped up in a rather unique tale of a woman trying to unshackle herself from the men in her life. But while that all provided mostly surface-level enjoyment, one scene cut deeper and the extent to which it cuts surprises me still.
As is often with the case with movie tears, these were tied to a real-world experience that had happened not long before I sat down to watch. I was dumped by a long-term boyfriend without much of an explanation and without any sort of warning. I was heartbroken and seeking some form of closure that was kept cruelly out of reach. I didnt understand why it had happened and it was the not knowing that felt harder than the break-up itself.
In the film, Roberts character has left her flighty husband and remains haunted by the heartbreak shes caused. On a rooftop in Delhi, a vision of him appears and they dance to Neil Youngs heart-grabbing Harvest Moon, the song that was supposed to accompany their first wedding dance. She reminds him that she did love him. He tells her he still loves and misses her. They cry and continue to dance. At the end, she tells him that it wont last forever, nothing does. Its a short scene but it hit me like a bus, it still does now. My tears are for the film but theyre also for something deeper: the sting of loving someone who stopped loving me and the ache of an ending I was never allowed in real life. BL

Adam Sandler can make me cry harder than hes ever made me laugh, the true test of a clown. Yes, even in the underappreciated comedy Click about a dad who finds a magical remote control in the Beyond section of Bed Bath & Beyond.
Sandlers workaholic architect fast-forwards through the worst parts of his day the dull weeknight frozen dinners with his family, the repetitive arguments, the gross times everyone gets knocked out by the flu in order to get to his next promotion so he can buy his kids whatever they want. His plan doesnt go well, of course. But whats shocking is how gut-rippingly painful it is to see Sandler hit play on his life only to realize hes skipped past everything that matters. His bodys been present, the bills have been paid, but his emotional engagements been staticky a trade-off too many of us can understand.
In the climax, old man Sandler sobs in a thunderstorm as he arrives at his daughters wedding only to learn shed rather her stepdad walk her down the aisle, and his son has grown up to mimic his job-first, family-second example. I rarely cry at unavoidable tragedies where no ones at fault. My weakness is characters regretting choices they cant rewind. Click isnt Ingmar Bergman Sandler gets a happy ending but I barely saw his relief through the rainstorm on my face. AN
The courtroom, Kramer vs Kramer

By all accounts, Robert Bentons film Kramer vs Kramer skews heavily toward Dustin Hoffmans Ted, whose wife Joanna has left him and their six-year-old son Billy. Billy and Ted make french toast together, or argue about eating ice cream before dinner, or visit the nearby jungle gym. Were it not for Meryl Streep and the trenchant, intuitive way she humanizes a woman who, in the 70s, would have otherwise been made to seem mawkish and unstable Kramer vs Kramer might be just a schmaltzy panegyric on fatherhood.
But leave it to our greatest living actor to turn a film on its head with a single scene. You know the one: Joanna, during the custody hearing, is subjected to a string of sexist questions about her failure as a wife and a mother. When asked why shes seeking custody of Billy, she blinks three times, beginning the monologue Streep herself wrote in an effort to redeem her character, who she initially perceived to be an ogre, a princess, an ass.
Billys only seven years old. He needs me, she says, reciting the word need with a whispery uptick as she glances at her ex. Im not saying he doesnt need his father. But I really believe he needs me more. After catching her breath, she becomes more emphatic: I was his mommy for five and a half years. Since I was about Billys age when my parents got divorced, ergo, too young to understand or even care, Ive always been astonished and, by proxy, moved by how compassionately Streep plumbs the depths of Joannas truth. The beach, Under the Skin

Little focuses the mind more effectively on human distress than the arrival of your own kids; scenes in films which I might once have snoozed through now induce boggle-eyed terror OH MY GOD, DONT LEAVE THAT BABY NEAR THAT COFFEE TABLE, IT HASNT GOT A CORNER PROTECTOR! But nothing has topped at least, not yet the scene in Under the Skin where Scarlett Johansson murders a swimmer and drags him off to eat him.
Its not the murder thats so epically upsetting, though its gruesome enough: Johansson, playing an alien visitor permanently on the lookout for human nutrients, simply bangs him over the head with a large stone as he lies prone and exhausted on the beach. Its what goes on in the background that is so awful. A woman goes into the water to try and rescue her drowning dog, and her male partner instinctively rushes in after her, leaving their toddler alone high on the shore. Johanssons chum the only other adult on this lonely Scottish beach goes to help too.
With the speed of falling dominoes, a nice little day out unravels: the mother and father are swept away to who knows where, and the alien takes her chance to acquire their would-be rescuer as a food source. Meanwhile, the suddenly abandoned kid is shrieking in terror as the night closes in. Another, less astute film-maker, might cap the scene with the alien scooping the kid up and adding him to her dinner menu, but what Glazer contrives is absolutely horrifying. Johansson-alien simply ignores it, and leaves it alone. The film moves on, this incident consigned to the past.
I have to confess I was absolutely blindsided by the scene; mostly, I think, because of the its sheer unexpectedness. I think I was gripped by a kind of internal hysteria: shock, hyperventilation, a feeling the back of my head might explode. (I cant say I actually cried though I may have, but in the confusion I cant really remember.) I certainly had to hold on to the seat to stop myself bolting out of the cinema then and there. I am aware theres a some degree of self-indulgence here: the fact that my daughter was about the same age as the kid in the film undoubtedly super-sensitised my reactions. But everyone has their weak spot; this is very much mine. AP
The birth, Cheaper by the Dozen 2

Cheaper by the Dozen 2, if you havent seen it you probably havent, why would you have? is the sequel to the remake of family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen, and Im sure it was made because Steve Martin, the star of the franchise, needed to pay his mortgage. The main gist of the movie is that Martin and his wife, played by Bonnie Hunt, have 12 children who get into various japes. Its asinine. But during a time in my life when I was making a lot of transatlantic flights, Cheaper By the Dozen 2 was always an option on the British Airways seatback televisions, and one day I found, because of the frequency of my flights, I had watched all of the other films.
What choice did I have? Weve got a real talent for repression back in Massachusetts. Kenneth Lonergans searing Manchester by the Sea plays out a 15-minute drive from my childhood home and, true to life, the characters all struggle to articulate the perfect storms of emotion raging within them.
When Lee (Casey Affleck) has a chance encounter with his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams), the shared history between them is literally unspeakable. They sputter out fragments of sentences that act as a shorthand for vast reservoirs of guilt and self-loathing they cant bear to express, and because they know one another so intimately, they can intuit all the meaning they have to. Theyve both shoved a lot deep down inside just so they can look at themselves in the mirror, and when in the presence of the only other person on the planet who understands what theyve been through, some of it has to come out. Randi does most of the talking, inviting Lee to lunch so they can get some closure, and he ends the conversation by walking away. Shes ready to face her past and be fully present in the new life shes built for herself. Lee, a North Shore boy born and bred, feels more comfortable starting a bar fight as his form of therapy. CB

Joanna Hoggs first film, Unrelated, has had something of a second life on account of being the debut of Tom Hiddleston, and set during a Tuscan summer, which means swimming pool, which means toplessness, and lots of it. Its nice to imagine the Loki-lovers streaming this masterpiece of English upper-middle-class excruciation. As its ending shows, specificity is no barrier to emotional oomph.
The story sees a woman in her early 40s, Anna (Kathryn Worth), holidaying with old friends and their teenage children. She finds she prefers the company of the kids, especially the charming Oakley (Hiddleston, then 26, playing eight years younger). The holiday implodes. Anna goes to stay at a grim airport hotel. Her friend visits, crossly wanting to know whats behind her behaviour. Anna explains that, quite recently, she thought she was pregnant but no, in fact, it was an early menopause. Shell never be able to have children. She sobs and bends double on the bed. It is shot in one take, from the middle distance, acted with a banal frankness which feels like eavesdropping.
When I saw it a decade back, it floored me: a twist I hadnt foreseen, a pain I could only imagine. A few years ago, I began consciously avoiding the film, fearful a similar fate awaited me. Now I can safely watch it again or, I thought I could, but Hogg is much too superb and mysterious a film-maker for that. It isnt simply the information which is terrible, it is the dreadful catharsis of its expression, coming after so much obfuscation. The stifle has gone; instead there is the most awful sadness. Buttoning up is often the bravest way. CS

On the face of it, Paddington is a fairly broad kids film franchise about the hijinks of a CGI bear, and so probably shouldnt make a grown human cry hot, salty tears. But that description ignores the fact that Paddington is a really, really well-made kids film franchise about the hijinks of a CGI bear, one that completely gets the pathos of its central character, a little lost immigrant searching for something resembling a family. Both films ably tug at the heartstrings, but the second film got me sniffling as early as 15 minutes in when Paddington imagines giving his only living relative, Aunt Lucy, a tour around London, something that in reality is impossible as shes stuck thousands of miles away in darkest Peru. When at the end of the film spoiler alert Aunt Lucy arrives on the Brown familys doorstep and she and Paddington hug, I completely, unapologetically lost it. Lord knows what surprises Paddington 3 has planned for my tear ducts. GM

Just before writing this, I put When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 on YouTube once again, just to check. Yep. Just as always, I choke up, in the same abject, lip-wobbling, head-bowed way. It still has that terrible power.
When She Loved Me is the song written by Randy Newman and sung by the devastated toy cowgirl Jessie and in fact performed, beautifully, on the soundtrack by Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. The song is Jessies way of telling Woody why she has grimly decided to submit to the airless world of the toy museum, because it is better than the inevitable heartbreak and delusion of loving a fickle human child. She reveals her anguish that her owner, Emily, has fallen out of love with her outgrown her, in fact. As Emily entered the world of adolescence, pop music and boys, Jessie was left under the bed and finally dumped.
When I first saw this scene and misled by the size disparity between toy and owner I thought it was a parable for a childs anxiety over being abandoned by the parent. But now that I am a parent I can see the truth which is completely the opposite way around. It is about the parents fear of being abandoned by the child: the terrible fear, actually the terrible certainty, that the kid one day wont want to play with you. They will grow up and want something else. This song is utterly devastating. It is modern cinemas equivalent of the Vesti La Giubba aria from Pagliacci the tragic clown smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. Im afraid to watch it too often. I dont want to break down over and over again. But I also want to preserve its power over me. PB
Ruths death, Fried Green Tomatoes

In many respects, Fried Green Tomatoes is not a movie for the modern age. It is a story about racism in the deep south told largely by way of eliciting our sympathies for wealthy white characters; it is a story about a lesbian relationship that had to slide its lesbian relationship in unnoticed, by presenting it as a very close friendship fulfilled by food fights, poker games and heads leaning meaningfully on shoulders. But I am deeply fond of this 1991 Sunday afternoon classic. Ive seen it more times than is healthy, and so I know exactly what is coming and when, and yet am still unable to resist the inevitable guttural sobbing that comes with the death scene.
There are plenty of teasers for it, too: Buddy on the train tracks, even Mrs Threadgoode talking about the death of her adult son. Nothing, however, can prepare the viewer for Ruth asking Idgie to tell her the old story about the frozen lake thats now somewhere over in Georgia. It doesnt so much pull on heartstrings as play a full symphony on them, and its devastating. As Sipsey puts it, a lady always knows when to leave. RN
The rooftop dance, Eat Pray Love

While I was repelled by the mere existence of the Eat Pray Love book, I found something strangely charming about its big-screen translation. It was a mixture of glossy food porn, glossy travel porn and glossy Julia Roberts emoting porn (she remains one of the best fake criers in Hollywood) all wrapped up in a rather unique tale of a woman trying to unshackle herself from the men in her life. But while that all provided mostly surface-level enjoyment, one scene cut deeper and the extent to which it cuts surprises me still.
As is often with the case with movie tears, these were tied to a real-world experience that had happened not long before I sat down to watch. I was dumped by a long-term boyfriend without much of an explanation and without any sort of warning. I was heartbroken and seeking some form of closure that was kept cruelly out of reach. I didnt understand why it had happened and it was the not knowing that felt harder than the break-up itself.
In the film, Roberts character has left her flighty husband and remains haunted by the heartbreak shes caused. On a rooftop in Delhi, a vision of him appears and they dance to Neil Youngs heart-grabbing Harvest Moon, the song that was supposed to accompany their first wedding dance. She reminds him that she did love him. He tells her he still loves and misses her. They cry and continue to dance. At the end, she tells him that it wont last forever, nothing does. Its a short scene but it hit me like a bus, it still does now. My tears are for the film but theyre also for something deeper: the sting of loving someone who stopped loving me and the ache of an ending I was never allowed in real life. BL

Adam Sandler can make me cry harder than hes ever made me laugh, the true test of a clown. Yes, even in the underappreciated comedy Click about a dad who finds a magical remote control in the Beyond section of Bed Bath & Beyond.
Sandlers workaholic architect fast-forwards through the worst parts of his day the dull weeknight frozen dinners with his family, the repetitive arguments, the gross times everyone gets knocked out by the flu in order to get to his next promotion so he can buy his kids whatever they want. His plan doesnt go well, of course. But whats shocking is how gut-rippingly painful it is to see Sandler hit play on his life only to realize hes skipped past everything that matters. His bodys been present, the bills have been paid, but his emotional engagements been staticky a trade-off too many of us can understand.
In the climax, old man Sandler sobs in a thunderstorm as he arrives at his daughters wedding only to learn shed rather her stepdad walk her down the aisle, and his son has grown up to mimic his job-first, family-second example. I rarely cry at unavoidable tragedies where no ones at fault. My weakness is characters regretting choices they cant rewind. Click isnt Ingmar Bergman Sandler gets a happy ending but I barely saw his relief through the rainstorm on my face. AN
The courtroom, Kramer vs Kramer

By all accounts, Robert Bentons film Kramer vs Kramer skews heavily toward Dustin Hoffmans Ted, whose wife Joanna has left him and their six-year-old son Billy. Billy and Ted make french toast together, or argue about eating ice cream before dinner, or visit the nearby jungle gym. Were it not for Meryl Streep and the trenchant, intuitive way she humanizes a woman who, in the 70s, would have otherwise been made to seem mawkish and unstable Kramer vs Kramer might be just a schmaltzy panegyric on fatherhood.
But leave it to our greatest living actor to turn a film on its head with a single scene. You know the one: Joanna, during the custody hearing, is subjected to a string of sexist questions about her failure as a wife and a mother. When asked why shes seeking custody of Billy, she blinks three times, beginning the monologue Streep herself wrote in an effort to redeem her character, who she initially perceived to be an ogre, a princess, an ass.
Billys only seven years old. He needs me, she says, reciting the word need with a whispery uptick as she glances at her ex. Im not saying he doesnt need his father. But I really believe he needs me more. After catching her breath, she becomes more emphatic: I was his mommy for five and a half years. Since I was about Billys age when my parents got divorced, ergo, too young to understand or even care, Ive always been astonished and, by proxy, moved by how compassionately Streep plumbs the depths of Joannas truth. The beach, Under the Skin

Little focuses the mind more effectively on human distress than the arrival of your own kids; scenes in films which I might once have snoozed through now induce boggle-eyed terror OH MY GOD, DONT LEAVE THAT BABY NEAR THAT COFFEE TABLE, IT HASNT GOT A CORNER PROTECTOR! But nothing has topped at least, not yet the scene in Under the Skin where Scarlett Johansson murders a swimmer and drags him off to eat him.
Its not the murder thats so epically upsetting, though its gruesome enough: Johansson, playing an alien visitor permanently on the lookout for human nutrients, simply bangs him over the head with a large stone as he lies prone and exhausted on the beach. Its what goes on in the background that is so awful. A woman goes into the water to try and rescue her drowning dog, and her male partner instinctively rushes in after her, leaving their toddler alone high on the shore. Johanssons chum the only other adult on this lonely Scottish beach goes to help too.
With the speed of falling dominoes, a nice little day out unravels: the mother and father are swept away to who knows where, and the alien takes her chance to acquire their would-be rescuer as a food source. Meanwhile, the suddenly abandoned kid is shrieking in terror as the night closes in. Another, less astute film-maker, might cap the scene with the alien scooping the kid up and adding him to her dinner menu, but what Glazer contrives is absolutely horrifying. Johansson-alien simply ignores it, and leaves it alone. The film moves on, this incident consigned to the past.
I have to confess I was absolutely blindsided by the scene; mostly, I think, because of the its sheer unexpectedness. I think I was gripped by a kind of internal hysteria: shock, hyperventilation, a feeling the back of my head might explode. (I cant say I actually cried though I may have, but in the confusion I cant really remember.) I certainly had to hold on to the seat to stop myself bolting out of the cinema then and there. I am aware theres a some degree of self-indulgence here: the fact that my daughter was about the same age as the kid in the film undoubtedly super-sensitised my reactions. But everyone has their weak spot; this is very much mine. AP

Cheaper by the Dozen 2, if you havent seen it you probably havent, why would you have? is the sequel to the remake of family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen, and Im sure it was made because Steve Martin, the star of the franchise, needed to pay his mortgage. The main gist of the movie is that Martin and his wife, played by Bonnie Hunt, have 12 children who get into various japes. Its asinine. But during a time in my life when I was making a lot of transatlantic flights, Cheaper By the Dozen 2 was always an option on the British Airways seatback televisions, and one day I found, because of the frequency of my flights, I had watched all of the other films.
What choice did I have?
