A little question for the buckynat shippers/everyone who is on track with the comics and all their intricacies.
What do you think it’s the reason for Bucky and Nat not being back together yet? (evil marvel writers aside XD)
- we know that they were very much in love during the buckycap era/ws 2012 run. Bucky considered Nat not only his lover, but his best friend. They helped and supported each other several times. Nat stood for him publicily against others judgment, Bucky considered her to be his only “home”. Their bond was strong and authentic, and it was broken not of their own will but for a tragic outside event.
- we know from BW 2016 that Nat regained her memories of all their time together
- when Bucky was presumed death she suffered much
- we know that between 2017 - 2018 they spent some time together working on few missions (the end of Tale of Suspense hinted at it, Punisher, War of Realms...)
- in BW 2019 we have another confirmation that Natasha does remember their relationship
- in BW 2020 Bucky confessed he still had hopes for them to be together again, and Nat replayed that she felt the same (at least before the fake family crap)
It seems they had a lots of time and occasions to try and rebuilt the bond that was so special for the both of them, but then never made the final step forward. It’s really clear that they are still in love with each other, so why don’t even try? They did this before, getting back together after the Red Room, showing that their feelings were real and not something created by some dramatic and unusual circumstances.
I’d be curious to hear your take on this in a 616 canon prospective! :3
(I know the actual reason is that writers at marvel are messed up and have difficulties following some kind of continuity/internal coherence with writing characters, but let’s pretend there’s some other believable motivation here! XDDD)

I know things are pointing to Sam becoming the new Captain America but part of me wants to see what Bucky would be like taking on the mantle and seeing his cap suit with the black. Do you think they'd even go so far as to have Sam and Bucky being co-owners of the shield like a tag team kinda situation? Or maybe even having their own shields? Do you think that would even work?
i don’t think mcu bucky has had the right development to be cap at this point. he’s still in like. winter soldier recovery stage whereas comics bucky had his shit together a bit more. as well as not really having a choice because steve was dead and sam wasn’t framed as being in the running that time. comics bucky had nat and the context was different. mcu sam has a lot more experience being a good guy and being a superhero and avenger. he’s a lot more stable. i think sam was 100% the right choice in the mcu. also just more palatable for the people living in it like if i saw the dude who just got pardoned for many crimes now being captain america i’d be like...... oh we’re just letting anything happen nowadays. i think when they take the shield back they’ll both use it for a while, like when bucky caught it from whiteboy #7, i love the idea of them sharing it in fights but i think that ultimately sam should be the one with the mantle??? they have the dynamic to be able to both use it n fights n its sambucky fuel.
as for both having one, even alternate shield theyve ever done has been ugly as hell. i think it’s important for sam’s character for him to realise his worth and that he IS captain america so having another one next to him might risk diminishing the importance of that

Can i request some good ol mutual pining with comic buckycap??❤❤
Here you go! Thank you for requesting.
The Real You
Summary: When Steve and Bucky learn that their girlfriend, Y/N, was kidnapped and impersonated by a Skrull, they’re heartbroken. They miss their girl more then ever, and are beyond happy when they’re reunited with her.
Tumblr media
Steve and Bucky sat on the couch in their shared apartment with their girlfriend, Y/N. Y/N had gone out with some friends, but Steve and Bucky were sitting, holding hands, and waiting for a phone call from Bruce Banner. With the rumors of Skrulls on Earth, Bruce had developed a new way to test if you were a Skrull or not. Even though Steve and Bucky were confident that neither of them were Skrulls, they still sat, waiting for the results.
“You nervous?” Steve asked Bucky, looking over at his boyfriend.
“I shouldn’t be, because I know you and Y/N aren’t Skrulls but . . . I can’t help it,” he admitted.
Steve nodded his understanding, squeezing Bucky’s hand before his phone rang.
He picked it up, shared a glance with Bucky when he saw Bruce’s name, and turned on speakerphone.
“What is it, Banner?” Steve asked.
“You and Barnes are Skrull-free,” Bruce informed them.
Steve and Bucky cheered and kissed in celebration.
“Y/N, too?” Steve asked.
Bruce’s brief silence concerned him.
“I’m sorry, Captain, but the Y/N now is a Skrull. They kidnapped her and are impersonating her, and we have brought the Skrull into custody,” the doctor said.
Steve nearly dropped his phone, paling. “T-thanks Bruce,” he said quickly, before hanging up and turning to Bruce.
“Oh my god,” Bucky breathed.
“She’s been a Skrull,” Steve said, in shock.
“How did we not notice?” Bucky asked angrily, standing up and beginning to pace. “How did we not notice that our GIRLFRIEND was a Skrull?”
Steve looked up at him, at a loss for words. “What did they do to her? They kidnapped her . . . she’s been kept captive for who knows how long,” he realized, his heart sinking. Was she okay? Injured? Was she . . . Alive?
Bucky turned back to him. Steve saw tears in his eyes. He looked broken. “I swear to god I will kill those bastard Skrulls who took her,” he promised.
Steve stood up, taking Bucky’s hands in his own. They were both crying. “I know,” he said softly, resting his forehead against Bucky’s. “We’ll get her back. We’ll take care of her. We’ll apologize for not realizing what happened.”
“Damn straight,” Bucky agreed.
The two were unable to stop talking about their girl for the rest of the night. They theorized, they cried, and their hearts ached to have Y/N - the real Y/N - back in their arms.
For the next couple weeks, all they could think about was getting Y/N back. They missed her terribly, and it hurt more than you could imagine to not know if she was safe, if she was hurt, and where she was. They worked non-stop with the other Avengers. They of course were worried and heartbroken to find out that friends Jessica Drew, Bobbi Morse, Susan Storm, and more had also been replaced by Skrulls. However, they couldn’t deny that their top priority was getting Y/N back.
Meanwhile, Y/N sat chained up in the spaceship floating through . . . Space that she had been forced into. She missed her soldiers more than anything, and they were all she could think about. Jessica, Bobbi, and Susan would keep her company, but it only did so much. She was so hungry, and tired, and in pain from what the Skrulls had done to her. She wondered, would she ever get out? Would she ever see her boyfriends again? Were they okay? Did they even knew that she was gone? Skrulls were damn good at tricking people, playing with people’s emotions.
Y/N longed for them. To touch them and to hug them. She wanted to see Steve’s smile and hear Bucky’s laugh. She’d close her eyes and imagine them standing in front of her, telling her a joke, telling her that they’d find her.
That trust and hope in her boyfriends was the only thing that kept Y/N going.
So when the space ship was broken into and she saw Iron Man standing there, Y/N couldn’t have been more happy. Her heart leapt in her chest and tears came to her eyes. He saved her. She was going to go home. She’d see her soldiers.
Y/N watched how Tony got Jessica out, and craned her neck to see Jessica nearly collapse in a blonde’s arms - Carol, she guessed. Next was Susan, and Y/N suspected that she went out to see her husband Reed, her brother, and her children. Then, Y/N.
Tony smiled at her as he broke the chains. “Your men have been non-stop in getting you back,” he told her, before moving onto Bobbi.
Y/N carefully stood up, wobbling a bit as she stumbled towards the door. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been on her feet. Y/N got herself out, and was overwhelmed to see so many faces, to see Earth itself. She narrowed in and instantly saw Steve and Bucky, and when they saw her, all hell broke loose.
Y/N instantly gathered the little strength she had left she fell into their arms. All three of them were crying tears of joy.
“Oh my god, oh my god,” Steve whispered over and over again, his hand combing through her hair and tugging her close. Y/N’s chin was on Bucky’s shoulder, theirs arms around hers, as she stood in their loving embrace.
“You’re back,” Bucky whispered as well, and Y/N nodded against Steve’s chest.
Stepping back, Bucky immediately scooped Y/N up into his arms. She didn’t complain - just let him carry her, and held Steve’s hand.
“We’re taking you to go checked out medically,” Bucky said, and Y/N squeezed Steve’s hand.
“Okay,” she said, not in the mood to argue. She knew her soldiers were stubborn, and logically she knew she probably needed medical attention.
“I missed you so much,” Steve said.
“Ditto,” Bucky added.
“I missed you, too. You guys kept me going,” Y/N said.
After Bruce looked her over and put her on bed rest, Y/N laid between Bucky and Steve in their bed, the two of them doting over her.
“We bought a new bed after we learned that Skrull-you wasn’t you-you,” Bucky said, handing Y/N a glass of water.
“We bought a new everything,” Steve said, getting a laugh out of the woman.
“Do you want to talk about . . . it?” Steve asked her.
Y/N held hands with Bucky and Steve, leaning her head against the pillow. She sighed, knowing he was referencing to her being held captive by Skrulls.
“No,” she answered quietly.
“Okay,” Bucky said, and then looked at her. “I’m sorry, Y/N. Should have recognized that Skrull-you wasn’t you. I feel . . . Horrible.”
Y/N looked at him, seeing the guilt and pain in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, too. We should have seen it. We should have known that it wasn’t you,” Steve said, rubbing his forehead. It was all he and Bucky had been wondering: how the hell had they not SEEN that their girlfriend was a Skrull?
“It’s okay,” Y/N began to say.
“No, it’s not,” Bucky said. “It’s not okay because you were gone for months and we were kissing and having fun with a Skrull.”
Y/N sat up, despite their protests, and looked over at both of them. “Skrulls are insanely good at impersonating people. I forgive you. It’s okay, trust me,” she said, putting her hand underneath both their chins, earring smiles.
“I love you,” Y/N said, lying back down.
“We love you, too,” the boys said together.

It's Monday Tuesday, the sun is shining, and I'm here to write another essay.
...How many comic panels is too many?
TLDR: Mutual respect, love, protectiveness. They make stupid decisions because of the other.
In MCU, there’s def. times where they’re jealous of each other, but never because of Captain America or being a hero.
616:
The good stuff.
During the War, Cap gets assigned a 16 year old kid with incredibly specialized training to take care of what needs to be done. Things Cap can't be found doing. Steve worries about Bucky's age (especially when they first meet). Sees him as a younger brother (they're 4 years apart).
Bucky makes Steve smile. Complains about movies, makes jokes, and always bawls people out who don't show Cap respect. Last part is embarrassing. He tries to get Steve to cut loose and have fun (usually with girls or to "take the evening off, pal. All this work ain't good for you").
Tumblr media
Bucky will drag a movie to hell and back or talk about how cool they look; Steve will remind him about all the lives lost during the shots. And Bucky knows this; he just has to act larger than life. Spins stories about how he’s going to be an actor, get all the parades, etc. after the War. Steve doesn’t know what he’ll be. I don’t think either really do know.
Tumblr media
Steve sees Bucky as more impressive and the better soldier than Steve because the strength Steve has came out of a bottle. Bucky is a natural fighter but he’s still 100% unenhanced humanity.
Steve gives Bucky an older brother to look up to.
Losing Bucky causes Cap to worry about/try and discourage every other teenage superhero who comes after. Because while Bucky didn't have any powers, he was trained. He knew what he was doing. And look where it got him.
Tumblr media
Cap's Kooky Quartet is a lot. Trio of kids around Bucky's age (he just turned 20, after all) when he got exploded? Clint gets the brunt of it because he's the most hotheaded contrary guy. Steve's still just turning 24. While Captain America's image TM and being recently defrosted makes everyone think he's old and not with it, Steve's really just a little older than those he's instructing.
Things change. Years go by. Like...10 or 15. Steve always remembers his friend but he’s firmly in the present. And then the Winter Soldier assassinates the Red Skull.
For all that Winter Soldier has Bucky's skills and snark (motormouth on this guy), his memories are out to lunch. He shoots Cap, when Cap tells him to shoot him if he doesn't remember. Cap dodges of course. It takes a Magical Artifact to restore what was lost.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Bucky pulls a runner. Is contact with Fury before Steve. Fury probably reaches out first. They have a history and Fury is the Super Spy rather than Cap. Safer. More familiar at this moment. Is used to the long game. Steve is a terrible spy and has all those morals and convictions. Fury gives Bucky what he needs (information, revenge, a new arm). Steve and Bucky cross paths. Fight a giant robot. Fall into old form, like no time passed. Bucky immediately runs away. Civil War happens. Steve dies. His last note to Tony says asks Tony to Save Bucky and Not Let Captain America Die with Steve. So, Tony being Tony, combines the two and we have BuckyCap.
Tumblr media
Fighting a Bar is an Acceptable Outlet for Grief.
Tumblr media
They never really Talk until after Steve comes back to life. From there, it's a lot of "Bucky, stop beating yourself up." "Yeah, sure. -does it anyway-"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MCU: Cory has Opinions
It’s universally acknowledged Pre-War Bucky is the older brother, Steve is the younger brother. I think they flip flop based on what’s going on. Bucky plays the role of protector, Steve plays moral compass and heart. They both admire the other for their strengths. They do fight, as siblings do. Neither are perfect. They’re both angry punks who can be assholes.
Steve will get mad that Bucky has saved him again and lash out. Or Bucky will be salty that Steve keeps getting in fights. Just walk away. But they both know Steve can’t do that.
On top of everything else, there’s certainly a class divide. Bucky’s family has a car. He’s smart, he’s athletic, girls want him. Steve’s poor and has a laundry list of health conditions. Nobody looks at him and thinks Steve’s smart, has a heart, and good at art. They just see some stupid guy who keeps getting into fights.
My Bucky has moments of “How dare you make me care. I was fine on my own, before I met you.” That’s a lie. Steve teaches him to give a damn. That heart and moral compass rubs off on Bucky; makes him a better man.
Consistently, Steve will pull away from people. Withdrawal. This includes Bucky. This time, it’s Steve who will get by on his own. Pure stubbornness. Bucky refuses to let Steve go through losing his mom alone.
Steve doesn’t look down on Bucky for being drafted (Bucky just wants to survive yo). Steve wants to protect people, stay with Bucky, and prove that the little guy has just as much worth as the big guy. Bucky is terrified Steve’s gonna die if anyone ever picks him. They fight at Stark Expo; he snaps at Steve because they keep having this fight. After almost 2 years of being in the military, Bucky has seen a lot. He wants to have a break from the War for a damn night and Steve won’t let it rest.
There’s def. jealousy when Steve gets to the War. Post-Table, Bucky (again!) just wants to have a night and pretend like everything’s normal. But he can’t get drunk, he’s isolating himself from the fellas he just went through Hell with...probably putting the pieces together that he just got shot up with a Nazi Knock Off Serum.
And then he can’t get the girl. I don’t think he was trying to flirt with Peggy for Steve’s sake. He’s trying to pull himself back together. Put on a show. Be Sergeant Barnes. Bucky’s not jealous of Steve being Captain America. Having all that responsibility. Proud Steve’s finally getting his moment. He’s afraid Steve’s going to ditch him now that Steve doesn’t need him to physically fight his battles.
Course, that’s Bucky’s insecurities rather than what Steve actually feels. Steve still needs Bucky to watch his back, just in a different role. The ‘shooting Nazis and helping me run command’ type of role.
Losing Bucky guts Steve. He’s not suicidal, he’s just a guy with nothing left to lose. He wasn’t planning on going out in a blaze of glory, never coming back. The Valkyrie crash is the only choice, in that moment. It also helps him not think of all the ‘what am I going to do now, after the War? Without my brother?’ I think if Steve could, he would have swam to shore and figured all that out. At some point.
But no. He’s frozen and then wakes up in the 21st century.
During that 2 year stretch between Avengers and CATWS, I don’t think Steve connected with people. He took a trip to the Grand Canyon and had that moment of -points above-. Great. He refuses to live in the past. But, he’s still got PTSD, grieving, and didn’t know what to do after the War in 1945, much less in 2012. So, he throws himself back into service and then he may not have to think so much about it.
For better and for worse, Winter Soldier happens 2 years after Steve is out of the ice. Steve doesn’t have to learn to move past the grief, really. He probably learns how to live with it. Grief becomes a little smaller. But 2 years vs. a decade and some change is different. Steve doesn’t really open up to people. Period. So to have the one person who he had at his lowest? Whose death he feels responsible for?
Yes, he’s destroying HYDRA and preventing the world from winding up in a totalitarian fascist hellscape. But he’s also trying to save his friend. I headcanon that he spends more time crushing HYDRA bases than chasing the Winter Soldier across the globe. Steve’s too smart for that. Is he compromised? Oh yeah. He does keep an eye out for Bucky and wants to talk. Get him help. But understands Bucky doesn’t Want to See him.
Then Civil War - legislation that is unjust? I’d break up my team of coworkers for that. The ones he is closer to (mostly - other than Natasha) are on his side anyway. He goes to Romania only when Bucky is targeted. Knows he’s asking a lot, is bothering Bucky. Hates that he’s doing this. It’s not a decision he makes lightly. Bucky lies to him and it pisses Steve off. Bucky’s afraid Steve’s wanting Bucky before all the trauma.
Steve just wants Bucky in his life. No matter what state Bucky’s in. He’s not going to let any programming take Bucky away either.
Yes, Steve 100% screwed up by not telling Tony WS killed Howard and Maria. But honestly. Again. Your brother or your coworker-friend who you have different ideas of the world about. (No Tony, you can’t put a suit of armor around the world and call it peace. You’ve seen people trying to wreck your suits that are trying to keep them out of harm’s way. Steve just handled S.H.I.E.L.D. and Project Insight for doing something like this). Steve gets that the armor and the Ultron are PTSD and Tony’s way of dealing with problems. But, it’s something he opposes.
Suits of armor wouldn’t have stopped Thanos, c’mon.
Steve’s team never stops Avenging between Civil War and Infinity War. He and Bucky chat, but they’re never together for long stretches of time; Bucky has his own life, even before Wakanda. His own people, like Steve has his own team. Then Bucky gets Snapped. Steve doesn’t move on. Keeps helping people.
Steve doesn’t stay in the past. It’s not his home. He gives the shield to Sam, drops off the Stones. Sometimes, he gets stuck in a time loop, but not of his own choice. He sticks around in the background as Commander Rogers. Steve, Sam, Bucky, Natasha, and Sharon can finally catch up with each other.
My Cap Family is Quinjet Quintet.
Both:
Are there things Bucky doesn't talk about to Steve? Yes. Because while Steve will listen, Steve doesn't have a frame of reference for long-term brainwashing and mind control. He'll say the Winter Soldier years weren't Bucky but Bucky still pulled the trigger. It's still Bucky's skills.
This causes my!Bucky no end to grief. My Bucky and Steve have come to actual blows over this. Usually when Bucky is in Terrible Mental Health and Steve is Steve about it. Support/Good Buddy/Guilt. That unstoppable force hitting immovable object. Steve will always support Bucky, considers him a good man, and Bucky sometimes doesn’t know how to handle that in a healthy manner. But when the dust clears, Steve will repaint the shield star on Bucky’s arm and they’ll go grab a beer.
Neither 616 nor MCU Bucky blames Steve for his death/the Winter Soldier years. It was War. They were both out there for a reason. Bucky wishes Steve would put that behind him but Steve can’t. Just like Bucky can’t put the WS years behind him.
No matter what - brainwashed, depressed, in trouble - Steve will not give up on Bucky. His partner is a survivor.
Steve and Bucky will destroy whoever hurts the other.

[Insert page of Fury getting his ass kicked after he tells Steve ON THE DAY OF BUCKY’S FUNERAL that Bucky’s death was faked]
After All the Things Happen, it's never the same as the War (and before, in MCU). The years have changed both of them. Steve [esp. in 616] has a life. More people who understand him. Bucky has to take care of Bucky and do his atoning thing [not that anyone really thinks the WS years are on him but Bucky can’t help it]. The spotlight is for Steve; Bucky does his work best in the shadows. Both are incredibly busy men. Neither really reaches out as often as they'd like. But when they do meet up, they still fit.
They will roast each other.
They are not codependent. Things just work better when they're both walking around.
They're each other's inspiration.

Curious about your thoughts as a long time comic fan: what do you think of the whole White Wolf narrative that marvel seems to be taking with Bucky in the MCU?
I simply love him and his arc as the WS in the comics, and am unsure about making him the white wolf, even though it's very clear that his journey to becoming the Winter Soldier in the movies is quite different from the comics. Idk, what do you think?
Yeah, so. I do have Thoughts about it. I started writing about it and ended up writing you a whole novel, sorry lol
The tl;dr version would be that I don’t know that I vibe with the White Wolf thing. The longer version... is long.
Since I grew up reading about perma-dead Bucky, his Winter Soldier arc in the comics was always going to be a hard sell for me - how can you convince me that undoing decades of canon is Actually A Good Choice and not just a gimmick? Ultimately, what won me over is how careful Brubaker was to pick a theme and follow it across its many facets. We see Bucky as a child struggling with the shame and regret of feeling like he can’t live up to his father’s orders. We see Bucky as a teenager being trained to follow whatever cruel order the army gives him because it’s For The Greater Good, and at the same time, we see how desperate he is for Steve’s approval at all times and how that’s tied up in his head with respect and authority and a lot of unresolved issues with his father. Then comes the Winter Soldier, and Bucky’s entire existence becomes about following orders, even though there are some orders he can’t be made to follow. Then comes the BuckyCap days, in which he more or less feels like he has no choice but to pick up the shield, but he starts exploring his agency in small and big ways. And then he becomes the Winter Soldier again, but - crucially - this time he’s taking the name that represents him at his most powerless and he’s reclaiming it in a wonderful way because only Bucky can be the Winter Soldier - there’s no other hero I can think of who has the gruesome skills and the modus operandi of an antihero combined with the idealistic, almost naive attitude of a Golden Age hero. For me it works because it’s amazing to have Bucky figure out that his identity includes everything he’s ever been while at the same time being something he can choose by himself according to what he wants and needs from life. It really is just a very beautiful way to wrap up this entire theme.
Now, the MCU. For all the changes the MCU has made to Bucky’s character, they’ve done a decent job of keeping this theme more or less alive throughout his appearances imho, which makes me very happy! It’s less well-developed because he’s not given too much screentime, but even fans who have never picked up a comic book got the theme from the subtext in the movies - how Bucky’s story is about agency. TFatWS explored it further. But I just don’t see what the White Wolf adds to this theme? I mean, it sure is a way of having him leave the Winter Soldier mantle behind for a while before he’s ready to take it up again. But he could, y’know... be Bucky. There’s no need to come up a whole new identity to him.
The thing is, imho, that people who aren’t into comics don’t have any reaction to the White Wolf because it’s not a household name, and people who are into comics are like “Why. He has nothing in common with 616!White Wolf.” Nobody is going to hear “Bucky is the White Wolf” and go “Oh my god that is awesome I’m gonna go talk to all my friends about this right now!!!” So the MCU really needed to develop the White Wolf angle like they do whenever they introduce a new mantle to the MCU, but they never do develop it, they just seem to expect the fans to come up with a plot in their heads with almost no clues to work with. To be honest, I’m still not even 100% sure whether White Wolf is a hero name or a civilian nickname! Because titles in Wakandan culture seem to be a big deal and come with a specific duty, but Bucky is implied to have been essentially a civilian under royal care and protection, not someone who was expected to do anything in particular. I had initially guessed that was just a code name to avoid other people finding out his identity, but if it’s a code name, then Marvel sure is clinging on to it more than they’ve ever done with other code names used in the MCU. (”Natalie Rushman” doesn’t follow Natasha all over the MCU!)
Of course, if we had a movie exploring Bucky’s days as the White Wolf, or even if we got a single poignant scene specifically about what being the White Wolf actually means, then sure! That could’ve been interesting and meaningful. But almost all of the White Wolf saga happens offscreen, so imho this detail doesn’t explore anything as much as it adds a random unconnected subplot to the Bucky’s main plot. And I don’t think everything in the MCU has to be Very Important! For instance, I think these random name drops could’ve worked if they were just fanservice, you know? It’s hard because Bucky doesn’t have many mantles, but I don’t know, maybe have him be The Sargeant and people would guess that’s a reference to The Captain or whatever - at least it comes from his corner of the 616 instead of stealing a Black Panther character who has nothing in common with Bucky.
Basically, I find the whole thing to be WAY more confusing than it’s worth being. I’m sure there are fans out there who are making amazing things with this concept, but it’s just not for me. I wish Marvel had 1) developed this mini-arc better, 2) picked another name and made it just a fun easter egg or 3) not given Bucky a Wakandan title at all and just let him spend his time between HYDRA!Winter Soldier and hero!Winter Soldier as Bucky Barnes.
So. Yeah. I have many thoughts and they’re not very positive! I can’t say that it bothers me enough for me to spend much of my time feeling bad about this storyline (the way I do with other storylines I dislike), but whenever I do stop to think about it I just have a hard time understanding where this story even came from and why Marvel keeps bringing it up. I don’t think it’s even a bad idea, it’s just so random that I find it more... weird than awful, I guess. Thinking about it doesn’t make me go “THIS SUCKS, I HATE IT!!!!” just “...okay. sure. why tho.”
...now I’m thinking about it, this whole post could’ve just been “???????????” and that would’ve summed up my feelings just as well.

top 5 bucky moments (mcu or comics)!
someone just asked this but I did it for the mcu so I wanna do the comics!!!! thanks for asking :D
1. I love the arc that he helps criminals turn their lives around. he just cares about people so much even when he doesn’t *have* to.
2. when Steve gives Bucky his memories back (this makes me so emotional every time I reread it)
3. bucky getting recognized by the public as a hero always gets me!!! we saw this just the tiniest bit in the tfatws finale but I hope we see this deeper in phase 4??? I’m so hopeful
4. not to be myself but…. his whole relationship with nat! they bring out the best in each other and there’s so many qualities we see in him with her. :cries: I think we see a certain patience and love that goes on beyond romantic with this… kind of lacking in the mcu with his characterization. we see this with other characters but I just love how much he cares about her and we see this so much.
5. Steve handing over the shield to Bucky….. Buckycap my beloved <3 but also Bucky giving up the shield knowing he shouldn’t really be cap when he does this :) I love him
ask me my top 5 anything

Sam Wilson-Centric Masterlist
Comparative Pest Control Methodology (ao3) - adi_rotynd Pairing: Bucky/Steve/Natasha/Sam Rating: General
Summary: Sam Wilson joins a totally normal, totally sensible pigeon club. (The Greendale Seven beg to differ.) This hobby is none of the other Avengers's business. (Steve, Bucky, and Natasha beg to differ.)
Dreadnought (ao3) - lunaaltare Pairing: Bucky/Steve.Sam Rating: Explicit
Summary: It’s 2015. So when a Nazi organization bags and kidnaps a bisexual black man to be their next asset, he guesses they’re trying their hand at this whole progressive thing, too.
Five Times Sam Didn't Sleep Alone and One Time He Did (ao3) - Baamon5evr Pairing: Steve/Sam Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: Sam had never liked the cold. He’d rather not feel the coldness from her room clinging to her but still it felt warmer already, not being alone always made him feel warm.
Ghost Towns (ao3) - AgentCoop Pairing: None Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: New Orleans tradition is steeped in magic, mysticism, and voodoo and Sam grows up in the midst of it all. When ghostly figures start appearing around him, he begins to dig deeper.
The dead spirits can be a bit frightening, but if he leaves them alone, they don’t seem to bother anyone.
The spirit that follows Steve around everywhere though? That one seems dangerous. That one seems too close to the human plane of existence.
That one seems too close to real.
hello, it's you, it's going to be you (ao3) - VeryImportantDemon Pairing: Sam/Bucky Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: Before Sam meets Bucky, he thinks he's already a little bit in love.
Heroes (ao3) - Overlithe Pairing: Sam/Bucky Rating: Explicit
Summary: It’s their first day off in a month and after an exhausting mission all Sam wanted to do was to stay home instead of being dragged by Bucky on a tour of DC’s touristic highlights. But a superhero’s work is never done, especially not when there’s explosions, problems you can’t punch, and a screening of the Greatest Film of All Time.
A slice-of-costumed-hero-life story about loss and hope, the past and the future, and killer bird gifs. (Set a few years after TWS & CA:CW and featuring BuckyCap and FalCap. Also, they make out while in costume, which I feel is the most important part of this summary.)
Holding Hands (While The Worlds Come Tumbling Down) (ao3) - Baamon5evr Pairing: Steve/Sam Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: I should seriously reconsider my life choices. Sam thinks from his place on the ground at a supposedly abandoned HYDRA center.
I Could Walk Out, But I Won't (ao3) - napricot Pairing: minor Steve/Bucky Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: "Bucky started the car, and that was it: the Sam and Bucky Road Trip of Sadness and Maybe Bonding was officially happening. Sam hoped they could get through it without killing each other, or anyone else." In which Sam is not as okay as he'd like to think, and Bucky's more well-adjusted than expected.
I Don't Wanna Watch You Walk Away (ao3) - Baamon5evr Pairing: Steve/Sam Rating: General
Summary: Sam stood numbly when Steve announced his departure from the Avengers.
nothing like a princess (ao3) - napricot Pairing: Sam/Bucky Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: Sam Wilson's fugitive life, post-Accords: taking refuge in a kingdom that might as well have been magical, in a sprawling palace set against beautiful mountains and jungles, where there was a handsome man cursed and trapped in a deathly sleep in a glass coffin, and a kind and just king who was working to heal him, and a stalwart warrior from a far-off time who wouldn't leave his cursed friend, and, hell, Sam even knew a witch. Surely Sam could be forgiven if his thoughts turned to fairy tales and Disney movies.
Bucky's kind of like a Disney princess. Sam would maybe like to be Prince Charming.
run, run, run (to your grave) (ao3) - oh_no_oh_dear Pairing: Steve/Sam, Bucky/Sam, Steve/Sam/Bucky Rating: Explicit
Summary: The intel? Sketchy. The trio? Exhausted. Hotel? Definitely not Trivago. Sam Wilson is on the hunt for the other Winter Soldiers, but somewhere between making tea and outmanoeuvring evil assassins, he finds time to fall in love. Sam Wilson is the ultimate multitasker.
Status Quo Ante (ao3) - Domenika Marzione (domarzione) Pairing: None Rating: Not Rated
Summary: A tale in which Sam suspects he should be used to this by now, for values of 'this' that involve certain folks he hangs out with and situations he finds himself in, Team Cap becomes Team Ex-Cap becomes TBD, and nobody but Clint really wants to know what happened to Scott Lang's GI Joes.
(Sam Wilson from the final scene to the mid-credits scene.)
swallow heart, sparrow soul (ao3) - cinni, Spacedog Pairing: Steve/Sam/Bucky Rating: Explicit
Summary: sam wilson is tired. he feels it in his bones, in his ever-present ache for the people he loves. he feels it in the longing, rooted deep in his heart, for a chance to rest, to heal.
and so, two supersoldiers in tow, sam wilson returns to the people and places he knows he can rest his war-weary soul.
(or: sam wilson goes home).
tell the truth (but tell it slant) (ao3) - mariahlee Pairing: Steve/Sam Rating: Mature
Summary: When Tony insists that Sam and Steve move into the Avengers tower with the rest of the gang, they agree to a two week trial period. Which, of course, results in the two most ridiculous weeks of Sam's life.
That Others May Live (ao3) - dentigerous, superhumandisasters Pairing: None Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: What happened to Sam Wilson in the war? A story that goes in and out of the past through flashbacks, therapy sessions, and Sam's emotions.
that’s what you get for dreaming aloud (ao3) - oh_no_oh_dear Pairing: Steve/Sam/Bucky Rating: Explicit
Summary: Steve likes Bucky (duh.) Bucky likes Steve (double-duh.) Sam likes Steve (kinda duh.) Steve likes Sam (who wouldn't?) Bucky likes Sam (wat)
Sam...likes Bucky? (stop the madness)
The slowest of slow burns. Occasional angst. Much kissing ensues. Maybe more also ensues.
The Worst Part About Being Strong (ao3) - Taciyet Pairing: Thor/Sam, Steve/Tony Rating: General
Summary: Is That No One Ever Asks If You're Okay
(Or: Sam is a borderline therapist for veterans, Thor has also seen and been through some shit, and we don't talk about either of these things enough.)
This Fledgling Thing (ao3) - snarklyboojum Pairing: Bucky/Steve/Sam, Steve/Sam, Steve/Bucky, Sam/Bucky Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: They say 'a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' but Sam has pretty big hands and he'd prefer the birds to keep their beaks out of his love life, thanks.
Whisperbright (ao3) - Gothams_Only_Wolf Pairing: None Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: Sam can talk to birds. He'd like you to know, for the record, that Polly hates crackers and would rather be eating a piece of fruit or a nut.
you are the sun, the moon and all of my scars (ao3) - winterfalconwarrior Pairing: Sam/Bucky Rating: General
Summary: When Sam’s born, everyone looks at the baby in horror. The little boy has a big, angry scar all around his left arm. Everyone knows where it comes from without saying a word. Soulmates always have the same scars.

im drabbling myself buckycap! buckytony and i thought id share. tw: age difference (tony grew up with bucky)
-//-
The door slams close behind them. Bucky locks it for good measure.
"You have no right to tell me what to do and what not to do!" Tony rounds on him. He's dressed to nine in his fancy suit, tinted glasses long forgotten in next room and he's furious to the bone. If those fire in his eyes are any indication. "I am not a child."
"Not anymore," Bucky stands tall. He remembers well how Tony was once; from five to nine to sixteen and drunk. That. That one, he tries to forget with not much luck. "You are not going there." He crosses arms.
There's a foot distance between them and Tony is shorter by several inches. Bucky's taller, broader and more powerful. He's Captain America with all the flourish and the power it comes with. He's also rampant with a sniper and a shield.
But Tony grew up with him; called him Bucky with his chubby cheeks. Threw balls with him, went on bike rides, went fishing, hell, Bucky taught him how to give a good back-hand and then some. He also split the ground beneath Bucky's feet when he smacked a kiss on his pucker; young and drunk, couldn't even stand straight and he told Bucky that, "I'll never love anyone like I do you."
Now he stands, just as shaky as he did that night. Just as brazen and defiant and when he chins up and tells Bucky, "I'll do whatever the fuck I want, Barnes. You're not the father of me. You lost the right to be anything to me when you left that night," Bucky thinks, fuck, here comes the ghost of my past; haunting.
"You're gonna get yourself killed," he growls, feeling frayed, helpless as he runs his fingers through his hair and meets the cowl instead. He yanks it off.
Tony scoffs, "Like you give a damn."
Now that's unfair. Bucky's temper flares. "You don't know the hell you're talking about." He glares.
Tony doesn't falter; gaze as steady although the fire has dampened and he spits, "You'd be surprised how much I know by now."

The End of the Line – Update and You Asked, I Told (Part 1 of 2)
Hi, friends! I have completed my move and gotten settled in to my new apartment and state and job, so I’m back here to answer some Asks and give a writing update.
In the past couple of months, I’ve somehow managed to crank out about 45,000 words of BW. All the way to the end. Yep. BW is DONE. I literally cannot believe it. It needs some quality time with the beta, and I want to catch up on answering comments, so I’m (tentatively) planning to post the rest of the chapters on Veterans Day, 11/11/2020. I remember commenting to someone that I would have the whole fic done by Veterans day 2018 but hahahahahahaha [sob]. As of right now, I believe it’s going to be three more chapters, and you can decide if you want to binge them or draw it out. I’m also planning to do a select list of works consulted, but I will probably attach that to the BW timeline when I get it done rather than tack it onto the end of BW.
I’ve also started outlining a new fic that I’m excited about. It’s a BuckyCap canon divergence story that’s been percolating in my mind for a few years and has done about 400 evolutions. I was planning to move on to an AIDS fic, but that would require so, so much research, and honestly, I’m researched out after BW. I need a break. But there will be some similar themes, so if you’re here for more emoshy angst, there’s more coming your way. In first person!
I’ve cleaned out my Tumblr inbox and am posting my Ask answers in two batches. I’m feeling less quarantined out and consumed with my move, so I’m going to continue working toward being more responsive more quickly. Moving forward, I might just answer the asks as they come up rather than batching them. I dunno.
The following contain spoilers for everything up to the latest chapter of BW.
Starting with some love (thank you!) and progressing to questions.
Tumblr media
Oh, thank you so much! I’m thrilled that you’re enjoying it alkfjalfjsakjf!
Tumblr media
Thank you so much! It’s something I’m seriously considering, actually. Although I could never publish BW the way it is (it’s far, far, FAR too long for any publisher to pick up as-is), I am planning to go through the manuscript after this and re-write the essential story in hopes of de-Marveling it and shopping it around. I’ve been playing around with the idea of even trying first person, since the character voices are so strong, but I love close third a lot too, so I’ll have to play around with it.
Tumblr media
I appreciate your patience, and I’m so happy that you’re into it enough to wait so long for the damn thing to come out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve written a lot of layers into the story in hopes that it will have decent re-read value – for those brave enough to read a 700k word fic more than once. But honestly, it’s so complicated sometimes that even I lose track of all the things I’ve woven in throughout. Part of it is that it’s a very different animal from where I started, both in terms of story and style, and I had some places I planned to go but then diverted, so there may be artifacts of old ideas floating around, I’m sure!
Tumblr media
You’re so right that the avoidance response is unbelievably strong for them, and part of their relationship goals (in my mind, anyway) is for them to be more direct in expressing what’s going on with them and what they need. As for the photo album, I can totally imagine this playing out – a nice family get together, some familial razzing, a highly triggered person trying to keep his shit together, but it’s Bucky, and emotion regulation is still not a very strong suit for him. So, presto. Awful picture night shenanigans.
As for Steve and his judgement call here, I agree that it’s definitely not the best. But I kind of wanted to show him as also being a vulnerable person who is struggling with this and wants relief from it. I think it’s more typical in fic to have one person is traumatized and the other who is this unwavering, grounded rock that is relatively unaffected by their loved one’s trauma and can provide appropriate support. Which is great! People like this absolutely exist. But this stuff with Bucky has really fucked Steve up, too, in addition to having his own trauma. He’s also feeling very distant from Bucky now, and one of the ways that they have historically gotten close is to have sex. It’s their go-to coping strategy as a couple. Don’t talk, fuck. So I thought it made sense that, on this night of vulnerability, they might resort to that.
Tumblr media
(See Baghdad Waltz Timeline ) Yeah, he was twelve, which is right before his family moved to New York. I’ve been sprinkling the episode around many chapters and don’t plan to go into a whole lot more detail about it TBH. It’s not essential to know all of the details, I don’t think. However, more will be revealed about Bucky and Jack’s relationship and how Bucky feels about him/felt about him, so hopefully that can provide a little context for it. Bucky has a lot of conflicting feelings about Jack and what happened to him, so we are forced to look at it through the eyes of a highly unreliable narrator. I hope future chapters (or chapters after this Ask was sent), will shed a little light on this.
Tumblr media
You’re spot on that Bucky totally minimizes it. Especially with Steve, knowing that Steve both needs to roughly know and probably will lose his mind if he knows the whole story. It was a brutal beating with some significant injuries that needed extra medical attention. As a side note, Bucky undoubtedly lied about having any surgeries, etc. in order to get into the Army.
Tumblr media
Thank you so much! I’m fully aware how emotionally exhausting this story can be, and I’m never quite sure whether or not to be apologetic about it. I’m not aiming to sensationalize anything or manipulate feelings out of readers or characters, truly. My guiding star is asking, okay, given everything, what would happen next? Not necessarily what *I* want to happen next, but what would these characters do now? Certainly I throw some circumstances in their way, but a lot of the emotional and relational responses to these are me trying to unflinchingly show what would happen with these two particular people with these two particular psychologies and histories.
As we can see, for as much as they love each other, this relationship is highly problematic. And these people are really struggling individually. I do try to show the good parts too, to balance things out, because I don’t want to shy away from those either. I’m always hopeful that the balance doesn’t become so out of whack that people nope out of the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my God, I know. I think about that sometimes as well. Bucky was a highly skilled military professional, though I do wonder if this is one of the only environments that would have allowed him to avoid his own trauma quite this well. The military is such an all-encompassing career, one where, especially at higher ranks, you work ALL. THE. TIME. When you’re working all the time, when everything is about the men, about these extremely intense deployment experiences, there’s very little room for the past to creep in. It’s the perfect avoidance strategy.
Moreover, the highly rigorous structure was excellent for Bucky, who tends to spiral out if he’s not operating within very firm boundaries. A lot of people with emotion regulation problems like Bucky’s can do very well in the military because of this. But when he lost that, so violently, it was the perfect catalyst for everything to come careening back to him. Especially when he really toned down the drinking. This is life for a lot of veterans, though certainly not all, or even most. But Bucky’s relationship with the military was absolutely symbiotic, yes. It is sad.
Tumblr media
This is one of Bucky’s attempts to earn favor with his new friends in New York, so good catch on the lie. Someone with an affectionate nickname obviously must have been liked, right? The last thing he wanted to do was have a repeat of his experience in Kentucky, so he put on a very good show and bullshat his way into a good social situation in New York. It’s not really bullshit though, because he’s a likable person. But I imagine he assessed the way he was, quiet, thoughtful, sweet, and probably decided nope, I’m not gonna be those things here. Not again. Some of the stuff, like his thoughtfulness and sweetness, couldn’t really be suppressed. But he did a lot of impression management in New York, including the creation of this nickname for himself.
Now, on to Part Two! See you there.

Are there any comics you're reading now that you'd recommend?
Oooh, comic recs. This ask makes me so happy!!! How much time do you have?
Alright, well let me preface this by saying I primarily read Marvel. Right now I’m rereading the Jason Aaron run of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor which was AMAZING so I highly recommend that one. (Shameless self promotion, but I wrote a fic about that story - I love those comics so much.)
Before COVID, I was reading the following titles:
Star (which is a spin off of Captain Marvel where Riley was pulled into some shenanigans, came back as a hero who was actually a villain)
Hawkeye: Freefall because… Hawkeye being a bit of a fail boat and just generally a good story that pulls in a lot of other Marvel characters
Valkyrie: Jane Foster which is a continuation of her story in the Mighty Thor comics
Captain Marvel
Captain America
Ms. Marvel
Falcon & Winter Soldier (BUCKY WITH A CAT ON A MOTORCYCLE!)
Right now new comics are kind of on a pause and it’s kinda hard to figure out what Marvel is putting out. I know they pushed the last 2 Star and Hawkeyes out on digital.
Looking at my older stuff, the first comic I actually bought was an omnibus of Brubaker’s Captain America where he introduces the Winter Soldier, and then the Death of Captain America where we get BuckyCap. Those will always hold a special place in my heart, and I go back and reference them sometimes when I’m writing fic.
If you’re looking for a more fun dynamic, I really loved Tales of Suspense: Hawkeye and Winter Soldier which is a short run team up where they’re trying to track down someone who is killing Nat’s old enemies (I have not and will not read Secret Empire Nazi Cap  but all you need to know is that Nazi Cap kills Nat during the run, which they cover in the beginning). Her two ex boyfriends think she may actually be alive and go looking for her which leads to some amazing snarky interactions between the two.
Winter Soldier: Second Chances is a more recent short run where Bucky is basically running a witness protection situation for reformed villain minions that are trying to get out of the life. He ends up taking a kid under his wing and trying to figure out how to help a young kid being forced to kill.
Nathan Edmondson’s 2014 Black Widow run with Phil Noto is hands down one of my favorite story and artwork combos. Not only do you get to see Nat being a bad ass, you also get to see her in her daily life and trying to make a difference. This story brought in a ton of additional characters from Bucky and Clint to X-23 and Frank Castle, and even a surprise cameo by Anderson Cooper!
Here’s the obligatory rec for Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run. Amazing, loved it but you can read a million other people’s rave reviews.
One run that I actually really enjoyed but kind of started on a whim was Chelsea Cain’s 2016 Mockingbird. I started reading it because I was interested in Bobbi Morse on Agents of SHIELD and DAMN did I find out how much of a badass she was on her own. The story starts out with her going to a SHIELD clinic because she’s got to get weekly check ups and is kind of starting to get some superpowers. Clint and Lance Hunter, her ex’s, are featured in the story.
Charles Soule’s 2014 She Hulk run is another favorite. I love extremely competent lawyer Jennifer Walters who just happens to also be 7 foot tall emerald green She-Hulk. The story follows her starting at a new practice and trying to balance her drive to help the little guy with needing to charge billable hours. It also intersects with the old man Steve storyline when she represents him in a wrongful death suit facing off against Marvel’s other superhero lawyer Matt Murdock/Daredevil!
If you’re looking for a non-superhero comic, Ed Brubaker’s Fadeout is my favorite. It follows WW2 vet and Hollywood screenwriter Charlie Parish who wakes up from a blackout in the same room as a murdered starlet from the film he’s working on. This has the feel of an old Hollywood film noir who done it and talks about PTSD and the Red Scare. I do want to put a trigger warning on it that it does touch on sexual abuse but it isn’t explicit.
These are just the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. If I was at my apartment I’m sure I could pull a lot more of them.
As an aside, I know that getting into comics can kind of be cost prohibitive. While I 1000% recommend going in and supporting your local shop, I also know sites like GetComics.info are helpful if you just want to browse before diving in. I may have gotten a few off there myself when money was tight or I wasn’t super invested in a character. Just make sure you have a CBR program so you can read them once they’re downloaded.
Hope this helps! And happy reading!

I know thr mcu did them dirty but do you have any comic recs for stevesharon? or even just for sharon?
they are so valid i even give steve a pass when sharon’s on the radar. he gets adjacent to sharon privileges.
i havent read a ton of cap stuff because it generally doesnt do it for me but i do love captain america vol 5 and that has a lot of stevesharon stuff!! its also just a generally very good comic (lots of sambucky and it’s when bucky first comes back as the winter soldier, then buckycap n buckynat, samsharon best friends etc etc)
i found a list for sharon here and as is the nature of being a man’s girlfriend in comics, a lot of her content will revolve around her relationship w steve so its a venn diagram of both

Avengers: Endgame Final Thoughts
Hi everyone. My take below, specifically pertaining to the future of this blog. Spoilers beneath the cut.
Hi Buckaroos. I’m freshly back from Endgame - and, wow - there are so many thoughts flying through my head. The one that keeps repeating is how much this movie is going to divide folks. I’m already seeing it now that I’ve unfiltered the tags here on tumblr. So although part of me wants to give it the weekend to really digest, I don’t think my final take is actually going to change. Here is Bucky the Farmer’s truths:
While I wanted BuckyCap because I’m a selfish person who would have loved to see it, I (and this blog) 100% support Uncle Sam. Sam deserves to pick up the shield. “I do everything he does, just slower.” Also, Bucky deserves to heal. I believe this with my entire heart, even if I selfishly wanted him to hold the shield. It’s the right move. As a Sebastian Stan fan, my heart is slightly broken for him because it seemed like he wanted the shield; but also, as a Sebastian Stan fan, we get to see so many other sides of his acting now and I’m really grateful and excited for that.
There was not enough of a Bucky and Steve reunion. I’m not just talking from a Stucky shipper perspective - and I can’t imagine how you guys feel, I’m sorry - but even from a place of friendship, that small scene wasn’t enough. A huge portion of Steve’s character arc was saving Bucky Barnes over and over again. There was no real reunion. Bucky was a background character - literally - he reappeared in the background. This is very frustrating. I never imagined we’d get even less Bucky screen time than Infinity War, but here we are.
At the same time...Bucky and Steve both deserve to move on. They aren’t our boys from Brooklyn anymore and they haven’t been for a very long time. I would gladly wish for ballgames and hot dogs and Coney Island, but it’s not them, not anymore. They both deserve happiness and thanks to Avengers: Endgame, they might just find it.
Thank the heavens above for Falcon & the Winter Soldier series. We’re going to get more Bucky, and more Sam, and it’s going to be great. Chin up, kids.
Let’s pour one out for James Buchanan Barnes, one of the greatest characters of all time, and thank you to Sebastian Stan for portraying him over the past decade. This isn’t the end of Bucky’s story, it’s a brand new beginning, and I can’t wait to keep blogging about this character.
That’s all, folks. Use the spoiler tags, please. Don’t spoil the movie for others. Happy to take messages or asks. Hang in there, everyone. It’s not the end for Bucky. He’s a survivor, remember?

SPOILERS digest #5
Here they are. Sorry y’all I am so tired.

Spoilers!  With Sam getting the shield, my hope is that the series will be SamCap realizing he isn’t as good as Bucky would be, so he gives the shield over to him and they proceed with more MCU movies with BuckyCap leading the way. 🤣
"she’s (Natasha) a monster because she can’t carry a man’s children and, ultimately, she died because she didn’t have a family. when women fail at heterosexual love and procreation, they legit get flung off a cliff for it"   I'm crying literally, not for Natasha who is a fictional character but for all the women (as me) who are infertile and have the message that are "dispensable"  Fuck Marvel
The article hit the nail on the head with Cap’s arc... just terribly written and not well thought out at all. Really crapped on everything that makes Cap who he is and why he is such a well liked character. I’m so so so disappointed. And I hope more articles and reviews are written that echo this author’s sentiments about how this ending is a complete disservice to Cap, Sam, Bucky, Nat, and even Peggy.
Sebastian really did look so beautiful and he played Bucky with such softness in these scenes, it was beautifully heartbreaking. This was Steve and Bucky’s final goodbye and the sadness resonated in his expressions and voice.
vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/04/avengers-endgame-steve-bucky-stucky-captain-america-shield-sam-wilson-falcon
Even Vanity Fair called out the ending and what a disservice it was to Cap’s arc and his relationship with Bucky.
Finally got to see Endgame, the film itself was good IMO but *spoiler* I get why some fans are pissed. As a Bucky stan I... UGH. It's like everything that happened in all 3 CA movies means absolutely nothing. Why tf is Bucky Steve's shadow on the Endgame poster, so shippers would wanna see it? It should be Peggy. I don't ship Stucky and even I am pissed lol, can't imagine how the shippers must be feeling. CA movies practically revolve around Bucky and in the Avengers movies he's irrelevant?! WTF
I love my Sammy but I’m so upset he got the shield before bucky. If they’re gonna keep bucky around and make him do superhero stuff the least they could do is make him Cap. It would have been a great opportunity for bucky to reclaim himself, and to show everyone he’s still good. Let him have the honor of carrying his best friends legacy. In every single cap movie buck has held the shield multiple times and it’s been foreshadowed that he’d get the shield. It felt like a let down.             RS- I so agree about the foreshadowing
I don’t think any other anons have mentioned this but the song playing while Steve and Peggy dance to is ‘It’s Been a Long Long Time’ and that just felt like a stab in the heart from Marvel because it’s a song that’s been used and referenced in so many Stucky fics and obviously Stucky fans don’t have ownership of it but still it really hurt.             RS- I totally agree.
I'm finally leaving the MCU. yess I liked Endgame, bu bye!             RS- ok?
truly believe the rumors that Chris Evans actually block Seb from getting the Shied. > Well, while Chris was Cap, Seb was talking about BuckyCap at every opportunity. It was disrespectful, moreover, I did not like it when someone asked Seb what would be Bucky's reaction if Steve died and he said Bucky would celebrate and say I'm free. I hated him for it. Bucky is free from Steve, but now he's going to be Sam's dog.
Bucky must have a minute scene. He appears after reversing the snap, then in the final scene with Steve for a few seconds. There's a cool scene between current Steve and Steve of 2012, they fight, to win, Steve says Bucky is alive. He opened a line in which Steve of 2012 goes in search of Bucky changing the events of TWS.

Infinity War Spoilers (I need to vent and word-vomit and I have SO MANY EMOTIONS)
Random thoughts and a ton of spoilers...

Who is/going to be permanently dead:
I’m actually only worried for the following characters: Heimdall, Loki and Vision. Gamora will quite clearly be one of the central figures to bring about Thanos’ demise since they’ve suggested pretty heavily that she’s trapped in the Soul Stone. Also, they can’t make a GotG 3 without her (and of course they’ll make a 3rd one). Plus it goes a long way to explain/lessen their use of the whole ‘kill a woman for all the man-pain’ trope, which would be kinda terrible if that really was the true plan (and I don’t think the Russos would stoop to quite that level). So yeah, Gamora will be fine.
Shuri might fix Vision, but like Jarvis and Groot whose successors are different people, I doubt Vision will be completely the same. Who knows, maybe Shuri did something to download his memories/personality? (One can only hope!)
Loki’s growth throughout the MCU has been huge and he’s now gone full circle: from hero to villain to anti-hero back to hero. He repaired his relationship with Thor, but he killed people in the past and so he has a lot to answer for, plus there’s no plot-driven need to bring him back, his death is good revenge-fuel for Thor (even though a 3rd fake death might be nice and in keeping with who Loki is - the trickster who always gets away - they did really hammer home in the movie that this was for real... doth Thor hammer it home a little too much, though? Mayhap. Or maybe I’m just being naïvely hopeful). Heimdall, as beloved as he is, is a secondary character. Unless they bring ALL of Asgard back - which would be nice, since Thor could kind of go there and rule a less colonial-like version of it for the rest of his days after they defeat Thanos (he’s obviously not going to stay on Earth since Hemsworth’s contract is up), but I don’t know. It would be kind of cruel to erase everything Waititi did in Ragnarok (or maybe that’s why he was able to have so much fun? Because he knew that IW was going to need a destroyed Asguard to work? So he had a lot of freedom to play?)
Those 4 were the only ones not ‘snap’ killed (aside from the Asgardians on the ship - and, yeah, they better not have killed off Valkeryie! I am hoping she’ll turn up in A4? Thanos only killed half of all the Asgardians so I’m thinking she took the survivors to get away when Thanos let them go, and that when they’re safe she’ll come back? Maybe even with Sif? (Doubtful, though)).
As a lot of other people have mentioned, Captain Marvel is in the 90s and there have been rumours of time travel. Those who were snap killed will certainly return so I’m not worried about any of those deaths... But I love Heimdall and Loki, and I’d feel bad for Wanda if Vision didn’t come back.
I hope they do bring them back.
I hope Valkyrie escaped with Korg and some of the others and is keeping them safe on some random planet. T_T
I’m also a little worried for Steve, Thor and Tony, although since they pulled a semi-‘gotcha’ with Tony looking like he was certainly going to die only to survive, and with all their mentions of a wedding and kids, I think they’re done with the ‘is Tony going to die’ drama and just have him retire. It’s been 3 Iron Mans, 2 Avengers and a Captain America of Pepper/Tony angst. CACW was the full break-up drama, and for the past 2 films, Pepper and Tony have been happy. They’re not going leave them in a bad place. It’s a superhero movie, and to paraphrase Deadpool, I doubt they’ll go DC-dark.
Hopefully they’ll let Steve retire too, but that tweet about Buckycap from the Russo brothers could go 3 ways (retired Steve leaves it to Bucky; dead Steve inspires Bucky to become Cap; or the Russos were faking it - they did lie to us via the trailers, they had fake scripts etc so it’s not impossible) so honestly, I don’t know. They might have to kill off Steve. I don’t want that. Let Steve rest. And it might just be plausible for him to do that after he meets Captain Marvel. She and the new generation of Avengers could give him enough peace of mind to let him retire.
I don’t think Thor’s going to die. They just spent this whole movie telling us that Thor continues to want to help people even when he has nothing left. Usually a character like that is axed in the end to ‘be with those he lost’ or some other trope-y nonsense (it’s not a plot ending I usually enjoy, as you can tell...) and I didn’t get that feeling here. I think, even if we don’t see Thor again in the MCU after A4, they’ll have him off-camera either ruling a remade Asgard/rebuilding a home for the remaining Asguardians, or traversing the nine realms, helping people.
By the way, he was, hands down, the best thing about this movie. They kept all the important parts of Ragnarok, I could see them, and they married it so, so, so well to his more serious side. He felt right. It felt like this was him at his fullest potential. The height of this long personal-growth story from Thor 1. I love that Pirate/Angel baby.
The Death reactions:
Everyone is commenting on how Tom Holland nailed his scene, and he did. He 100% totally did. I was weeping for that poor, scared child. It was like a stab to the heart. And for Tony, knowing there was nothing he could do but hold him... oh my gosh. It tore my heart to shreds. A+++ Tom Holland.
A lot of people said similar things about how well done Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s scene was. And it did get my feels going, but there were others that hit me just as hard, literally just as hard as the other two: Okoye seeing T’Challa disappear before her, and her cries for him to come back, just as we see Sam disappear, alone, no-one there with him (Rhodes arrives too late to see it happen) and Rocket has to watch, again, as a beloved Groot dies (... and oh jebus he doesn’t know yet that the ENTIRETY of the GotG gang are dead except for him). Okoye lives to serve Wakanda, she loves T’Challa (not romantically, of course), to her he is the embodiment of Wakanda. Her entire being is dedicated to protecting him, her friend, her king and he just... disappears in front of her. The horror in her eyes, the helplessness of her voice as she begs him to come back... I’m tearing up right now.
Don’t even get me started on Steve. Bucky was the first to go via snap death, and I do have a soft spot for him, so it hit me like a ton of bricks; Steve barely had time to register Vision’s second death and their overall failure before he loses the one thing he had left to tie him to his past - one of the few people he really loved (romantically or platonically, however you choose to interpret it, Bucky mattered). Steve Rogers has been through a lot. This sucked. It sucked so hard. All of these characters have lost so much, and Steve’s no exception. And we didn’t even get a BuckyNat moment (not that I’m mad about it, tbh. I’m glad they resolved the Brutasha thing nicely and kept Bruce’s character from Ragnarok (Waititi’s anxious, awkward nerd is so much better than Whedon’s hypocritical jerk nerd). It’d be way too soon to suggest BuckyNat, but I hope maybe to see it in the BW movie and maybe get a hint of it in A4?)
And then there was Drax. Oh my gosh, Drax! I didn’t realise just how attached to him I was until he was disappearing. I was not prepared for his panic, his soft calling out to Quill, not understanding what was happening to him and desperate for Peter to stop it. It was all just so terribly sad. No matter what he says, it just shows how much he looks to Peter as his leader, how much he loves him. I wanted to hug that big lug.
And then of course, there was Thor watching Heimdall and Loki die... I don’t even want to remember that... and mourning his brother? It was, like, the first 5 minutes and already I was balling. Damn you, Marvel. Damn you.
Ok, that’s enough sad talk.
Things I loved:
- Cap, Widow and Falcon’s entrance. So badass. SO BAD ASS.
- Black Widow in this movie. This was like CAWS Black Widow. This is the BW I love. She didn’t have much screen time but every moment felt right with her.
- Thor’s... everything, really. Every second he was on screen, conscious or unconscious. He was funny, kind, breaking stereotypes, powerful, cool, bad ass... he’s my favourite.
- Peter’s pop culture references. And his basing plans on 80s movies.
- Those plans working.
- Ned. He was on screen for 30 seconds and he made me cackle.
- AVENGERS ICE-CREAM.
- “WHY is Gamora?”
- Wong. He was there for 5 minutes and he was hilarious. “200 rupees” XD
- Drax being ‘invisible’.
- The Gamora/Nebula bond.
- “Dude. You’re embarrassing me in front of the wizards.”
- THE BUCKY AND ROCKET MOMENT WHERE ROCKET WANTS BUCKY’S ARM. THAT’S ALL I ASKED FOR AND THEY DELIVERED. AND BUCKY LITERALLY PICKED UP ROCKET AND TWIRLED HIM AROUND SO HE COULD KILL MORE EFFECTIVELY. THEY ARE KINDRED SPIRITS. WHO BOTH LOVE GUNS AND WERE REPEATEDLY MADE AND UNMADE AND WERE TORTURED AND FELT SO UNLOVED AND OK NOW IT’S BECOMING SAD AGAIN.
- Okoye and her hilarious quips.
- The GotG intro.
- PETER DINKLAGE. WHO IS A GIANT DWARF.
- “Not if I don’t die.”
- Bruce’s inner Hulk conflict.
- Rhodes messing with Bruce.
- “If you throw another moon at me I’m gonna lose it.”
- Peter Quill being jealous of Thor.
- “I would have washed that.”
- Tony’s nano tech.
- Bucky and his quips.
- How Peter got the Iron Spider suit.
- The Red Skull?!!?!?
- “You speak Groot?” / “It was an elective.”
- Understanding Thanos’ terribly flawed plan, his dedication to it and why he really does believe it’s for the greater good, and his genuine, proven, deep love for his favourite daughter. That’s what makes him so terrifyingly real. Real monsters aren’t just evil for the sake of being evil. Real monsters have good parts to them. They love, they’re the heroes of their own stories. But those redeeming features are no excuse for their monstrosity, their vileness. He’s an excellent, complex and terrifying super-villain.
- How Shuri awed Bruce with her super brain.
- Whoever thought to put Rocket, Groot and Thor together.
- “Rabbit”
- “Morons”
- Fury’s “motherfuc-“
- “This is my friend, Tree.” / “I am Groot” / “I am Steve Rogers”.
Where were these characters?!
Antman, Hawkeye and Nakia? I assume it’s because they’ll have biggish roles in A4? It also leads me to think the Antman & Wasp movie might have some serious significance to A4. We already know that the upcoming Captain Marvel will be important, for obvious reasons, but I’m thinking that since Antman & Wasp is the next movie to be shown after IW, it’s probably going to give us something (is that really obvious to other people and I’m just missing something? XD)
(Also, again, where was Valkyrie? And while I’m at it, where was Betty Ross? Will she turn up on A4? Or was that fake too?)
I’m going to go weep in a corner now.

Any chance you could talk about identity porn? I know this is a very general question, but I would love to hear more of your thoughts about it
I feel like I answered this before relatively recently but now I can’t find it. So, identity porn! Yay! One of my favorite tropes, and also one I didn’t really realize I liked before getting into Steve/Tony because the term is from comics fandom even if the trope shows up elsewhere.
For me, honestly, it is the delicious anticipation of, well, you the reader know who all the characters are, but you also know that they don’t know that they are talking right now to the character they have a crush on. And so then you get to wonder what they will do or say that they would never do or say if they knew who they were really with. And then, well, then you get to find out!
At this point I would like to give a shoutout to identity porn stories that fully commit to the identity porn porn, because that’s a little bit rarer in fandom, since for obvious reasons the identity reveal usually happens before the characters end up sleeping together. But with the magic of blindfolds and/or very dark rooms, all things are possible! I think derryderrydown’s Hypotenuse was the first story I read of this type (involving Steve sleeping with Iron Man), and it clearly influenced me to the point that I stuck a scene like that in Slipping off the Page. Ha.
But my actual favorite flavor of identity porn porn is, I think, the kind where Steve’s identity is what’s at stake. And I know I haven’t written much of it (it is on my WIP list, trust me) but the reason I like it is that you can get identity porn, all of Tony’s feelings for Steve, and if you play your cards right, probably some of Tony’s self-loathing. Until a week ago I would have said that my favorite example of this was Valtyr’s A Face To Meet The Faces That You Meet in which Steve, pretending to be BuckyCap, finds to his surprise that Tony has been sleeping with Bucky and pretending that Bucky is Steve. It is very good but has now been replaced in my affections by @ironlawyer‘s The Illusion Cannot Be Sustained which features Sad Prostitute Tony (in an AU where the second drinking arc was very hard on him) sleeping with a bunch of people who remind him of Steve. And pretending they’re Steve. And I don’t want to spoil it, and I don’t think I can say anything more about the identity porn without shrieking incoherently. Read it.
Anyway, yeah. Identity porn. It’s the best.
