It’s late by the time Eddie lands at LAX, the airport terminal deathly quiet. He shrugs his duffel higher up on his shoulder and dodges a group of twenty-somethings blearily searching for directions to baggage claim. 

An unquestionable sense of home warms him as he makes his way to arrivals, in a way that it didn’t when he landed in Texas. Visiting El Paso was never going to be easy, but in being open and honest with his parents he sloughed off some of the heaviness that shrouded his soul and started to repair the chips and fissures exposed underneath. Journeys aren’t linear, Eddie knows this, and recovery doesn’t have an end point, but the tiny flicker of hope he’d left with hasn’t been extinguished. If anything, it’s grown. His parents are always going to be his parents, the issues there are never fully going away, but saying his piece⁠—and boy, did he have a lot to say⁠—was more satisfying than he thought it would be.

It’s this hope that carries him through customs and onto the escalator that takes him down to arrivals. He spots Buck almost immediately; half a foot taller than everyone around him and squinting up at the flight information boards like they hold the answers to life’s big questions. Eddie catches himself smiling, can’t really stop what his face is doing, as he comes up behind Buck and says, “Hey.”

Buck spins around, his eyes bright and the corners of his mouth ticking up. “Hey.”

For a second, Eddie feels caught by⁠—something. Anticipation? Weightlessness? Love? 

Maybe all of those things. 

He drops his duffel and immediately reaches for Buck, or maybe they reach for each other, and he exhales shakily as he hooks his chin over Buck’s shoulder and spreads his fingers across the solid warmth of his back and just. Holds on.

“I missed you,” Buck says softly, face tucked into the crook of Eddie’s neck. “You seem... good?”

“I am,” Eddie promises, because how could he not be in this moment. “Buck. Thank you.” And he doesn’t just mean for picking him up at the airport, he means for everything, all of it. 

Buck squeezes him a little tighter before they separate, but he doesn’t go far, just picks up Eddie’s bag and stands so close they’re bumping shoulders. “Ready to go home?”

Feeling brave, Eddie tangles his fingers with Buck’s and makes sure his surprised blue eyes are on Eddie’s before he says, “Yeah. Yeah, I’m ready.”

welsh remus guide pt.1

As a casual marauders fan (if such a thing exists lmao), I’ve noticed a growing love/interest towards Remus being Welsh and exploring what this means regarding accent, mannerisms and language. Seeing Welsh being butchered by the use of google translate, whilst understandable that people would turn to it, is actually physically painful at times. And so!! I’ve decided to start collecting some language tips and bits of info to help anyone who wants to Welshify their Remus. The source? My upbringing as a first language Welsh speaker in South-West Wales.

The most popular head canons I’ve seen, some based on scraps of info from canon, is that Remus is either South Walian (specifically South-East Wales - aka the Cardiff area) or North Walian. I’ve only lived in North Wales for just under a month so I have a rough idea of NW slang but I’m no expert. I have lived in Cardiff for about 3 years so I have a stronger grasp on broad South Walian slang.

This is to say - I will try and give words and bits of info I think would be useful to know but my ask box is always open to more specific questions. I’m also a nerd towards the Welsh language so this is going to be an unnecessarily deep dive into it.

First Lesson

Gogs - North Walians

Hwntws - South Walians

Gogs (short for Gogledd meaning North) and Hwntws have an age old rivalry. Our accents are very different and even our Welsh can have a huge variety of slang and accents.

Examples:

Milk - Llaeth (Hwntw) Llefrith (Gog)

Now - Nawr (H) Rwan (G)

Whilst plenty of Welsh folks have very English sounding accents, if someone has a distinctly Welsh accent you can usually tell pretty quickly where they’re from. Accents within the Welsh language itself tend to be rather strong and distinctive for most people. It is extremely common for someone to ask you where you’re from once they find out you speak Welsh. Probably cause Wales isn’t that big and only like 20% ish of us speak Welsh??? Idk. It just is a thing. So like:

“O, da chi’n siarad Cymraeg?” (Oh, you speak Welsh?)

“Ydw! Wyt ti o’r Gogledd?” (I do! Are you from the North?)

“Yndw, dwi o Gaernarfon. Ble yda chi’n byw?” (I do, I’m from Caernarfon. Where do you live?)

“Fi o Rhydaman.” (I’m from Ammanford.)

Hopefully that dialogue feels human and not like two robots talking but you get the gist of it lmao. So, for those of you who want to make another of the characters, such as Lily, Welsh as well, it wouldn’t be out of place for them to try and establish where the other is from when first meeting. But also be aware that their slang and language would be different if they’re not from the same area (as with any language or country).

Conclusion: You cannot slap the blanket label of Welsh on Remus and then have him speak any old welsh and use any slang and such. So either choose somewhere specific or throw a dart and stick with where it lands.

Note: I am not the collective consciousness of every Welsh person. My experience is not universal - especially when it comes to North Walian things. This is just meant to serve as a general guide. Hope this helps and good luck with your writing!

Thinking thoughts about Buck usually being the RED one in the red-blue dynamic with Eddie (tsunami, post tsunami, post-shooting with Chris, ptsd room trashing, many others-) because he’s all feeling and wears his heart on his sleeve…

but then in 6x12 he’s dressed in muted blue and greys because he’d feeling closed off and tired and lost…

and THEN we see Eddie in a deep dark red shirt as he welcomes Buck into a safe space and finally talks about the shooting and tells Buck to allow himself to feel whatever he needs.

Just… thinking thoughts about the dynamic turning around and Eddie being the open heart Buck needs right now.

bucks takes it upon himself to go outside of his job and directly approach tommy in order to connect and create some sorta scheduled hang out session. and it isn't until eddie suddenly appears and makes it clear that he's already been hanging out and making friends with tommy that buck's jealousy comes along. and rewatching with full episode context now, it totally reads as someone jealous over their bestie hitting it off with their crush better/much sooner than they did. letting it get so far between them that one friend hurts the other over a boy

like eddie is literally just... bro-ing out with a friend who will finally play basketball with him (because his best friend's answer is always an established no) and meanwhile buck's green with envy because he's the one that wanted to shoot his shot with the pilot. eddie off to the side likely killing time during shift talking to his girlfriend on the phone and bucks just "that should be me on the phone laughing at whatever tommy is saying 😡"

Breaking down the 6x11 promo

Eddie doing compressions!! It makes absolute sense tbh with Hen and Chim riding in the back, they both need to push the gurney so Eddie clearly takes over as soon as it touches ground because their main priority has to be to keep Buck’s heart beating. 

It’s also heartbreaking, though, because it means that in all this time it took them to get to the hospital they haven’t gotten it pumping on his own again

Judging by this two takes, it seems like it’s Eddie taking Buck’s pulse here. 

Why does that matter?? Well... 

Because the doctors aren’t doing compressions anymore here. They are only giving him oxygen. Could that mean that Buck’s heart just restarted right now? Will Eddie manage to restart Buck’s heart in the nick of time before handing him off to the doctors??? 

This is such a stupid thing to hyperfixate on here, especially given all of their heart-broken expressions... but at some point between arrival and handing buck off Eddie lost/took off his helmet and I’m dying to get context for it. Idek why. I’m just super intrigued

NGL I am surprised to see the Buckley parents here and deep down I don’t expect them to stay at the hospital for long. 

But with Bobby there, I would love for a little friction depending on their reaction. I mean, Philips is clearly still there while getting the news...

...but then we see Chim and Maddie alone and deep down I think we’ll see the Buckley’s just run off in an emotional fit. 

Love me some Bathena looking after their surrogate son, but if nothing else this confirms to me that Buck’s blood relatives (Maddie excluded, ofc) aren’t gonna stick around long

Okay so I definitely think Buck talks dream!Howard into helping him because a) Buck’s subconscious knows Chim believes in weird stuff more than anyone else he knows, and b) where in the initial take of Chim’s appartment there’s a knife case behind him, here’s two beers. So my guess is this near-dead in the dream is after they tried and failed to back-to-the-future Buck into his body. 

This scene is definitely not the same as Buck coding, because Hen doesn’t look scared, she looks confused/intrigued by something or someone

Maddie looks so sad here. My two guesses is this is either her arguing with her parents before they bounce on them, oooooor she’s asking “what’s wrong” because something in Buck’s recovery isn’t working the way the doctors would want it to (because he’s failing at something in the coma dream)

she’s def not asking about the initial coma thing because she’s changed her clothes here

Love the idea of Buck collapsing in his dream before a Howard that barely knows him while in reality this Chim is doing all he can to save his brother

Read rumors of Aisha crying during Christopher’s scene and if this is it I’m gonna flung myself into the sun

Coming back to Eddie, Jonah, and Buck. And how it’s so interesting how their different stories played out.

Eddie was always heroic. It was his nurturing instinct. His abuela’s “little hero”. But he never got praise for it. In fact, more often than not, he was punished. Him staying heroic was an act of rebellion.

Jonah was heroic as a child and was praised. He got addicted to the attention. In the most literal definition, growing desperate at withdrawal.

Buck was never acknowledged at all unless he risked himself. The only affection he was given was in the case that someone was worried they might not get to give it to him again. So when he reached adulthood and found a job where risking himself was heroic, and that heroism was praised, he thrived on it. But unlike Jonah, he didn’t create situations to make him the hero. He just put himself in more danger in existing situations than was maybe needed. He amplified existing emergencies for himself, not the victims. He made the way he got to them more dangerous, which got him more praise for being more heroic.

It’s just always fascinating to me these differences. Barely different situations, entirely different outcomes. Negative reinforcement --> heroic anyways, Neglect --> more attention-grabbingly heroic, Positive reinforcement --> invented heroism.

SaL anon here friend and I've decided to temporarily take the cowards way out and postpone choosing an Eddie song in favor of talking about my Buddie song for this week, which is I'll Keep You Safe. There's something about "mistakes bound to be made" and them both going past the glass door, something about Buck keeping Eddie safe by showing him he deserves the same 2nd chance he's given others, a chance to rebuild, something about Buck keeping Eddie's heart (Chris) safe while giving him his own.

Hello my friend! Sorry this is so late, I have not been feeling well all week so reading fic was about all my brain was up for. I’m so excited to talk about this song for Buddie because it’s so perfect for where we are at right now!

The imagery here of Buck taking Eddie to see Charlie and basically saying to hold out his hand and feel the weight of the impact he’s had on the people he’s saved is just too perfect. Also the repeated line of “don’t be afraid” is so relevant after all this time revolving around Eddie’s panic attacks and fear and nightmares. I agree with the “mistakes they were bound to be made” because they have both made mistakes both in their work and personal lives but they are partners in every sense of the word and fight to keep each other safe.

I’m glad I waited because now we have the 5x17 synopsis and we know Eddie is working on reconciling with his father and we are really seeing him putting in the work to build a new life for himself. He started that by moving to L.A. but he has always kept part of himself locked away and he can’t move forward until he begins addressing those things from his past that are weighing him down. And we are getting to watch Buck stepping in with him and being there to support him along the way, but without taking over or making Eddie feel like a failure. That’s some real soulmate behavior!

I’m thinking about Eddie beating himself up for not seeing the missile that took out the chopper, and Frank explaining to him that based on everything Eddie has said, there was no way for him to have seen it coming. Slowly, all these things Eddie is blaming himself for are going to come out, and be shown that they are not always entirely true, and the more he keeps pulling those threads, the more those things holding him back will begin to unravel and he can start fully healing. Also fun to get a bit of heart talk here as we discuss Eddie and the season of hearts!

Ooooh, I love that line “dismiss the invisible by giving it shape” because we just got the scene of Eddie having that nightmare! But by talking about and voicing his fears, giving shape to the nameless horrors that haunt him, he’s able to start bringing them into the light and that’s a step towards healing! Also there’s been a lot of talk about Eddie and time and not having enough of it, so I love the idea that him going to therapy is him being the clockmaker and getting the gears in line so he finally feels settled and in tune with time.

I’m just thinking about Eddie taking all those pearls of wisdom from Bobby, and Buck, and Hen, and Chim, the family he chose and using them to build this new foundation and new life for himself, and it’s certainly going to be something to behold. I love the imagery here of the seasons! Broken branches and falling, burning leaves leading into the desolation of winter, but always followed by the sweet new growth of the spring. Eddie has been in a transitional period but he is making it through the bitter winter and we are headed for a glorious spring! Eddie has spent so much of his life being shaped by other people and what they wanted him to be, and now he’s taking the time to be the artist of his own heart and his own destiny. 

And one of the reasons he is so free and able to do so is because of the support system he has in Buck. Buck may have given Eddie his own heart (that moment was TOO CUTE!) but he took Eddie’s in return and every day fights to keep it safe. There’s also the double meaning in that with Bobby having said that having a kid is like having your heart outside your chest, and we see Buck not only caring for Eddie, but also caring for Chris in the most parental ways! He comforts Chris the same way Eddie does, he knows the routine and can get Chris to school on time while also making sure Eddie is cared for, and he researches a way to help Eddie, but also to help Chris and keep Chris involved because they are a whole family unit. 

Great choice in song this week! I know there are SO many that just scream Eddie! but this past episode really was all about the Buckley-Diaz family and working together as a unit, so this fit perfectly!

Summary: Eddie Diaz knew what it meant to be in danger. He’d served on the frontlines in the United States Army. Working on a different sort of frontline as a first responder, he saw danger when doing his job as a firefighter. Then came the usual dangers of just living in Los Angeles. And yet, somehow, he’d never expected danger to come into his life this way.
