Начну с истории столицы Мальты. Во мнении о происхождении названия мальтийской столицы сходятся все ученые. Жан Паризо де Валлетт – французский аристократ с задатками авантюриста, сделавший блестящую карьеру. В молодости, пришедшейся на первую половину XVI века, он командовал галерой, а затем, попав в плен к туркам, круто изменил свою судьбу – стал простым галерным гребцом. После освобождения его ждал карьерный взлет: он стал губернатором ливийского Триполи. В 1557 году его избрали Великим магистром Мальтийского ордена, по сути – действующим правителем островного государства. На этом поприще Валлетт проявил себя с героической стороны. Когда к острову подошла мощная турецкая эскадра, мальтийскому войску во главе с 70-летним магистром удалось отразить нападение. Несмотря на победу, оборонявшиеся понесли серьезные потери. С этого момента поселение, названное в честь Великого магистра, решено было превратить в неприступную крепость. До XVIII века город богател и разрастался, пока не перешел в руки Наполеона, а затем англичан, без особых, впрочем, разрушений. А вот Вторая мировая его не пощадила: бомбардировки повредили многие исторические здания, которые пришлось реконструировать. Несмотря на разрушительные войны, регулярные осады и нападения, Валлетта сохранилась до наших дней. Это уникальное место, которое хранит атмосферу средневекового города.
