The members of the genus Euglena are microscopic, single-celled eukaryotes that can be found in large numbers in both marine and freshwater habitats worldwide. Exactly what they are, taxonomically speaking, has been the subject of extensive debate: like plants, their bodies contain chloroplasts filled with large amounts of the green pigment chlorophyll which allows them to absorb sunlight and carry out photosynthesis to sustain themselves, but like animals, they are capable of “eating” (when faced with low light levels that impair their ability to carry out photosynthesis they can secrete enzymes that break down dead organic matter in the water around them, allowing them to absorb nutrients from this matter through their cell membranes), moving (with a pair of tiny tail-like structures, known as flagella, allowing them to swim towards food and away from predators such as larger single-celled organisms and tiny animals such as rotifers and fish larvae) and rudimentary “seeing” (with a single redish-orange “eye spot” filtering sunlight onto a light-sensitive structure at the base of the flagella and thereby forming something comparable to a very basic eye, allowing Euglena species to distinguish between light and dark and move towards sunlight.) As such, most authorities now classify Euglena and its relatives as protists, a sort of “miscellaneous” category that includes all eukaryotic organisms that are not animals, plants or fungi. When faced with dry conditions or a lack of sunlight and food, Euglena species can encase themselves in a protective membrane and enter a dormant state until they encounter preferable conditions, and when conditions are ideal they reproduce through binary fission, a form of asexual reproduction in which a single-celled organism essentially makes a copy of its genetic material, separates these two copies at opposite ends of its body and then splits into two distinct but genetically identical individuals. When sunlight is intense and water is abundant, these organisms may reproduce so frequently that the water they live in begins to appear green (or, in the case of the species Euglena sanguinea which uniquely possesses a protective casing of the reddish substance astaxanthin around its chloroplasts to protect them from damage from intense UV radiation, red.)

(Note - on the individual pictured above, the orange mark near the top of the image is the eye spot. The flagella are tiny and transparent so are very hard to see through most microscopes, but they’re there - I promise!)

Not an animal per say, but a poster I was given for Christmas had these little goopy guys on it and I wanted to learn more about them. I think they’re cool, and while they’re not easily visible protists are still wildlife!

Look at my little Euglena!

It's a horrible tumblr-made gif, and I'm not very good at using my phone to film through the microscope lenses, but it was clear and very pretty in person :-)

My lab bench neighbor has a much better camera phone than mine, and also more skill, so I may end up asking him to send me his images. I think I lucked out sitting next to him—he's one of the few other students also still wearing a mask, and he seems serious and prepared about the work, but happy to share materials and talk about what we're seeing on the slides.

I had low-level background anxiety all weekend that I'd never be able to focus my eyes properly through the binocular lenses and never be able to really see the microorganisms because I'd see everything double and I'd get headaches every lab from trying. But! After a brief panicked moment at the beginning it wasn't really a problem! For the most part my eyes were able to coordinate with each other naturally. It seemed easier with moving living creatures, and more stuff in the field of view. Phew.

Oh, question, do you think Flatlanders are autotrophes (photosynthesis), heterotrophes (nom nom) or like Euglena (have a light sensitive "eye" patch to see if there's light to photosyntetize but will nom things if more convenient)? Ignoring the fact that Bill claims to be a being of pure energy (which either means he got some caffeine or he is being very loopholey about Einstein's E=m times c squared. Or is being hyper dramatic)

I've only very briefly thought about how flatlanders fuel before, so this is VERY subject to change, but:

I'd never heard the word "Euglena" before but that's actually surprisingly close to the idea I've been toying with—that maybe they get most of their energy directly from absorbing light, and a minority from eating. I'm toying with the idea that they get sunlight from the third dimension, which means light + heat + energy is constantly radiating into their dimension and hitting all their "insides", so even if they can't see where it comes from they could potentially have evolved a bunch of internal biological solar panels to absorb it.

But I assume they need to eat at least a little bit of something—we've got multiple references to Bill eating and drinking and giving himself teeth and tongues, and multiple potential-ex-Flatlanders with obvious mouths, and I tend to think that's something they started out with rather than something they picked up after leaving the second dimension—so physical food features somewhere in their diet.

I think Bill's "being of pure energy" claim is like 99% true, but that's not a Flatlander thing, it happened after he destroyed his dimension. They aren't beings of pure energy, he is.

(But again: all this is super preliminary thinking, I may change my mind later. I have drawn his childhood home with a fridge tho.)
