i think i mentioned this before but i actually love the idea of esther gradually finding out david is in love with jack. like it's just little hints but when it gets through to her it makes so much sense. for example one day she asked sarah "how's jack?" or "is jack coming over for dinner tonight?" and sarah just kind of scrunched her eyebrows and went "how should i know? ask david" and esther was confused because she was so sure that jack was courting sarah. and then one day she paid attention to how close jack and david were at the dinner table, even if there was no real reason for it, and how they exchanged glances and giggled from time to time, and they've always sat like this, always acted like this, so why didn't she ever pay attention to it? or in the mornings, before david went to school, she always heard some rustling--a window opening, some hushed voices, eventually a quiet laugh--and one day she just got curious, she took a peek inside david's room, and she saw jack leaning in through the open window. and her son went red in the face (for some reason?) but jack just smiled and said good morning like the polite boy he was, and esther realized that jack went out of his way to wake up early just to see david before he went to school. and one day when she went to the rooftop to hang the laundry she noticed something scribbled on the brick half-wall with charcoal messily--the initials 'j' and 'd' with a plus between them--and she didn't have to think long before she realized it stood for jack and david. and that's really when she started taking the possibility of david and jack being queer into consideration. she wasn't even shocked, she just didn't know how she didn't realize earlier. and i think from that point on she just made sure to make jack feel even more welcome

i have such a vivid thought in my mind of canon era davey being queer but obviously his family doesn’t know, or at least he thinks they don’t know. but he’s an odd boy, and they know that there’s something… different about him, whatever that may be, and i think that they love him despite it.
i keep thinking about mayer suspecting but never pressing it further, because that’s his son, and he loves him, but being a queer in a time like this is a death sentence- it’s something mayer can’t wrap his head around. i keep thinking about les, already dreaming of finding a wife and settling down one day, asking david about it and being confused that his older brother doesn’t really want a wife— right now, at least. not right now. maybe someday, david says, always tacking on hope, but les has his doubts. and i keep thinking about sarah seeing her brother’s longing, seeing how his smile falters when he stares at couples on the street and how he never seems to be happier when he’s shoulder to shoulder with a certain newsboy. sarah sees it, and knows it, and she wishes he would talk to her about it. she doesn understand it, but she wants to. and i keep thinking of esther knowing. knowing in her heart that her baby, her loving boy, hopes and dreams of a life he can’t live, not now, maybe not ever. esther seeing the way his shoulders tense when family friends ask if he’s found any girls to woo yet, seeing that singe of pain on his face when an older woman at their synagogue says she has a darling granddaughter she would love for david to meet, seeing the way he resigns himself, putting up a wall between himself and his family, singling himself out and shutting himself off without anyone else pushing him to. maybe, just maybe, noticing that the way he looks at a certain newsboy is the same way her brother used to look at his best friend- a brother she has no contact with, a brother she hopes is happy and safe and loved. a brother she will never understand, a brother whose life is something she was taught to condemn, but she would rather have a queer brother than a lost one, and the same applies for her son.
and i keep thinking about david jacobs having very big feelings inside. feelings of hope, that maybe he can one day share this with someone he cares about, not just someone like him. feelings of despair, like he will never be happy, or safe, or loved. feelings of fear, fear for being suspected on the street, fear of fists and police and a jail cell to rot in. feelings of defiance, because he’s a person too, and he deserves happiness too, and if he has to find that happiness away from the public eye, if he has to find it in alleys and molly houses and behind closed doors, then so be it.
feelings of guilt, for not being the son he should have been. but feelings of acceptance, too, because his family recognizes that something about him is different- whatever that may be- and loves him anyway.

Some good old family doodles I found! Also pain. But we can ignore that one. One of my favorite parts of Newsies was always the family dynamics. As much as I love tormenting my favorite characters forever, I also like drawing them happily ^^
sometimes. sometimes.

Okay okay so I saw you’re thing about deaf davey and I just-
So my both my best friend’s parents are deaf and he told me once he was arguing with his mum and naturally she was signing at him and he just. Turned off the light.
just. Les at davey.
KSJFSJDJE HE WOULD-
Davey trying to lecture Les for doing some stupid shit and Les just-
Closes his eyes.
By extension in this HC Esther is deaf and she and Davey will have the most aggressive sign arguments if he comes home late or talks back.
Also also Davey getting his newsie name of "Mouth" because that's his sign name-
Les: "We call him that because for someone who doesn't talk he still finds a way to never shut the fuck up-"

Thinking about when winter rolls around in the lodging house and a bad cold is going around. Jack, Race, and Specs are doing all they can (along with the help of Kloppman of course) but they never had parents to teach them any remedies or familial tips for sickness so they’re kind of flying blind, using anything they learned from years passed. Jack doesn’t want David to come around and risk getting sick but David is adamant that he can and will help. David tells his mother about it (and because he’s just like her) she insists that she go over there and help care for them. They make the journey together with a quilt she just finished (in case they’re low on bedding or someone needs to switch out for something cleaner) plenty of tea to soothe their throats, and of course homemade soup (enough for everyone to have some). Even though spirits are low and the sound of coughs and sneezes dampen the mood it’s the best winter they’ve had in a while. Esther is tucking everyone in and making sure they have food and drink and making sure their sheets are clean. When it gets late she sings them lullabies. She ends the night by asking Jack if there are clothes that need mending.
“That’s awful nice Mrs. Jacobs but you don’t have’ta go through all that trouble”
She places a hand on Jacks cheek and for once he doesn’t flinch away from the touch of an adult. “You took care of my boy, let me take care of you.”
By Christmas morning each boy has freshly sewn and patched clothing. Their socks are a little snugger, mittens a little warmer, and hearts a little fuller.

Esther head cannons that no one asked for
Her hugs are amazing let me tell you
Jack as a hard time with her hugs and breaks down one night only for them to talk about things on the fire escape
Then Jack hugging Esther as time goes on ( thank you @i-didnt-do-1t for that head cannon)
She and Sarah bakes for the newsie
Especially on birthdays and holidays
Think of her becoming the mom all the newsies never had (same with Myer)
Also helps Sarah sew things for the boys
Will visit at least twice a week
Have taught some of the newsies writing
Kinda set it up like a school with the littles first then the bigger kids
Her and Kooplman are like besties fr and even gives him extra things like books or ingredients for the food he gives out to the newsies
The littles love her to death and worship her (same with Sarah)
Teases David about Jack every once and a while (although who doesn't)
She doesn't has a favorite Newsie
Medda and her are like #1 besties
They go out for tea sometimes or dinners, talking about anything and everything
And for one Christmas they pulled everything they got to get EVERY Newsie a gift
Even the older kids cried that day
All of the Newsies always try to get her things for her birthday or holidays
She really appreciates the gifts and if there nick nacks then she has them around the house
Sometimes she let's a few of the kids sleep over if they can't pay for a bed or just need a break from the noise
Depending on age, Les will share a bed with a little while David sleeps either with Sarah or on the floor/couch
If older Les will sleep with Sarah and David with the newsie
Jack spends way to much time over there but Esther never says no

Expanding on my previous point - crutchie who is arguing back to davey that he has to sell because he's been in the refuge, he can't afford board for the night and nobody's been working, they can't afford to spot him. davey just shakes his head and brings him to esther who takes one look at him and crutchie immediately learns where Davey gets his stubborn from

i usually sound weird/awkward when I send asks but anyway lets try it -- do you have thoughts on the different dynamics between davey and his family members?
i dont really know how to explain it other than like. putting it in an angst kind of setting LMAO but: it somes out a lot when david is upset, or having a really difficult day. those days happen a lot less than they used to, but they still happen; the days when he feels the weight of the world deep in the center of his chest and it's hard to even walk, let alone go to school or the lodging house.
mayer sits with him. for as long as he can, anyway; either he or david will have to leave, but david finds that the weight he feels is eased when he can rest his head on his father's shoulders and hear him say, you don't have to be a strong man all the time, david. it helps when david can talk to his father and get advice. his dad is more of a man than he'll ever be, he feels like, so hearing those words of wisdom- hearing that he doesn't have to be on it 24/7- it makes him feel like he's on the right track.
esther holds him. david has always been a mama's boy, and that's not changing. she's a very smart woman, and knows there's something different about him- something he won't let Mayer see- but esther is really the only person he feels like he can be himself around 100% of the time. so, she holds him, and lets his worries and words tumble out a mile a minute, and runs her fingers through his hair, and tightens her grip when her son, her baby boy, starts crying in her arms because it's all so much. and she doesn't tell him to man up, or push through- she tells him to let it out, and he feels like he really can. (plugging in autistic david here: his mother is the only person who can initiate physical contact with him without making him uncomfortable. for everyone else- even jack- david has to initiate the contact or he feels like he'll crawl out of his skin.)
sarah engages with him. when david is upset, there's a 50/50 change it will end in tears, but if sarah can get to him before that, she knows that she can talk him down. so, they have an old fashioned bitch session. they sit on the fire escape and air out their grievances- with the people at school, the family, the world- and spend so much time "yes, and"ing each other that it makes david calm down. maybe it's just twin brain, but they riff off of each other so well that they're able to vent without ever feeling the need to check in on each other, and david is grateful that he has someone who will listen to the edge in his voice, who allows him to feel anger and lets him express it. at their core, whether they're teenagers in 1899 or teenagers in 2023, they're teenagers, and understand each other on a deeper level because of it. sarah gets him, and he gets sarah, and having those moments where then can be angry and upset together and talk everything out helps both of them.
and les tries. he really, really tries- he may not know why his big brother is upset, but les will do whatever it takes to make him happy. he'll bring him toys, or give david half of his dessert at dinner, and it's something so small and seemingly insignificant- les is only nine, after all- but it's truly the thought that counts. les is smart, but david isn't going to burden him with making him listen to everything, so those little moments when they pass each other food or things they think the other will enjoy is integral to their relationship. if les finds david curled up on the fire escape, crying as he looks out at the city, he'll sit with him and offer him pieces of whatever snack he has. snacking is a privilege they often can't afford, and the fact that les is willing to give it up for david? it helps put his worries into perspective.
to simplify, i think the dynamics can be summed up using love languages:
Mayer gives David: words of affirmation
Esther gives David: physical touch
Sarah gives David: quality time
Les gives David: gift giving
and in turn, David gives his family acts of service.
