pretty new to fandom and never have heard of bluesky, what fandom is it from? or is it just its own thing published to ao3?
ohhhh anon. oh boy anon.
okay so blue sky is a portal fanfic written by wafflestories, originally on livejournal, also on ffnet. here's the ffnet link. no it's not on ao3 yeah wild right. it is set post-portal 2, so if you don't know the story to the game i don't wanna spoil you and am gonna put All That Synopsis under a cut here. no spoilers for the actual fic tho! yayers
Meteors, signals, apologies, and that tricky little thing called humanity - four years after the events of Portal II, Wheatley's been handed a second chance, but it's not going to be plain sailing…
the summary says it all, really - after returning to earth from his spacely rendezvous, wheatley gets another chance at Not being a terrible person and mending his relationship with chell.
yea also it's chelley (chell/wheatley for the unacquainted). i don't actually know what the vibe check is on chelley these days i think chelldos is more common now at least on tumblr. and i am not arguing with that because that big robot is gay and frankly good for her. but i can say when i played the portal games back in like 2014 chelley had a fucking vice grip on the fandom. the soccerball was a tumblr sexyman, for goodness' sake. and of the squillions of chelley fics around at the time (some of them probably quite questionable in hindsight but we don't gotta talk about it right now) blue sky was the crown jewel.
the thing is? blue sky 100% deserves that spot. shit, it's one of my favourite fanworks ever.
arguably because it's not really focusing on being a shipfic. i know half this recommendation is talking about shipping but i'm giving some context here alright to the nouveau portal fans who were Not there in 2014 and i feel the need to justify like No This Fic Is Actually A Really Good Take On It Trust Me. we are not here to kiss the metal ball we are here to grab him by the lapels and watch him struggle to go from an objectively terrible person to a deeply insecure person three steps from relapsing Back into that terrible person to someone who actually has their moral and ethical shit together. i think it does portay glados in a less sympathetic light than some other fics but also bro (gender neutral) i was reading portal fic in 2014 and 2014 alone i saw so much worse than "yeah glados is still on her i'm-in-denial-about-my-humanity-and-taking-it-out-on-everyone-else schtick"
i'm sick of writing paragraphs. reasons why blue sky is really cool, fic spoilers minimal:
a redemption arc where a character's flaws are not skipped over; in fact, they are dragged into the light and shown off at all angles to be appropriately judged by the reader and the characters in story. no woobification here. if anything the opposite - blue sky takes opportunities to remind the reader wheatley is very capable of being a shit person and the fact that he is doing this whole redemption arc thing is important
but still acknowledging the trauma that is apeture science. saying shit's fucked up without excusing everything else that people did because of it
blue sky is definitely a wheatley centric fic (i don't think this is a bad thing because Let's Redeem Wheatley is a concept that requires a lot of narrative attention and heavylifting tbh) but it doesn't overlook chell's feelings about apeture and also about this whole oh wheatley's back situation. she's strong and badass but she's also allowed to have those feelings and be worried and anxious but also angry. and that doesn't make her not a badass. wah i love her
the town of eaden!!! chell has found a home after portal 2 and they are lovely and she loves them and they love her. i was obsessed with some of these characters as a teenager and they are all ocs. but they are so well written and integrated into the story so well that you can't help but love them. it is so easy to see why chell loves them and especially as wheatley gets attached to them too. it just. ough. it all feels so real they're all wonderful
bro (gender neutral) the redemption arc hinges not on romance or whatever but on the love one gives and receives by contributing to their community and finding their place and taking the things they've been told they're shit for their entire existence and spinning it into something that helps others. tell me that is not the best shit ever
i like how it depicts the robotics and technology its fun :]
there are several scenes that are imprinted in my fucking brain. i swear. one the hallway scene. two the tower scene. three the nightlight scene. four the foxglove scene. if you know you know

16 and 18? :D
Thanks!!!
16. What is your most underrated fic?
Honestly any of the Kamek and Kammy ones, lmao. It's the price I pay for writing genfic of two minor villain characters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I like writing their bickering though. And their history with each other.
So I guess A Fireside Spat is the one I'll claim to be the most underrated, haha. I won't say Inky Soup for the Soul cuz that one's not even a month old yet!
18. What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.
Waugh I think right now it's...the end of Chapter 3 of An Egg of a Trying Time!
Because like, as an aromantic person who's been kind of burnt out on fictional romance for years and thus can be like, super picky about the shipfic I read and enjoy, writing shipfic has been a trip and a half, lmao. I didn't want to put in any of the romance tropes I hated/thought ridiculous (a lot of them) but it, like, still needed to read as romance-y to the allos and other people who read that stuff. So the entire fic reflects that set of self-imposed limitations, and that's probably why its so weird, lol. (It's nice though, being able to write what I'm comfy with without being jumpscared by absolute nonsense)
For the end of this chapter, specifically, where i get to walk Luigi to the realization that Bowser has a crush on him, you can tell I very much carved the space around "Bowser has a crush on me", and that was mainly because I didn't want to write those words out on the screen because that was a Romance Thing that I didn't wanna touch with a 10 foot pole, haha. I dunno, I'm not really a fan of explicitly writing those things out in general. Mostly because there's always a gravitas to it and a lot of Romance Tropes like it that I'll never understand or resonate with, so without it those moments just inherently fall flat. Especially when they rely on that gravitas to be compelling. Which is most of the time. And that's lame!
Me dancing around the words themselves made for an interesting result, though! Writing Luigi's train of thought took like, 30 minutes of focus time to nail down but it turned out good! I got to pull quotes and ideas forward from Chapter 2, for one, because those are the clues hes gotta stitch together. It was fun going back and placing those, too. And you can tell Luigi had his realization without the narration saying outright that he had it, because of the thought train and because his face goes red and because by this point the reader has most definitely figured it out already, by the relationship tag or by the clues Luigi was too silly to pick up on. So why say it again, you know? The interesting part isn't the realization itself; that's old news. It's all about the lead-up and the reaction to it! That's a philosophy I like to use a lot in my writing 😊

Hi handsome. Is there anyway I can ask for some advice? As a fellow bkdk shipper and bakugou lover. So I am trying to write a bakugou x reader, with a bakugou who’s all-knowing reluctant closes friend is Izuku. For storyline purposes (as my all knowing kind eyed friend for reader) and just for the length of time.
This almost seems like a silly ask. But how would you recommend, for me to build the relationship between reader and bakugou… to feel genuine and worthwhile and just as intense as a long time friend Izuku could be? Basically, I’m asking for advice on how to make an audience ship Bakugou with reader as opposed to his best friend who has a somewhat intense relationship with him already built into canon.
i dont find this ask silly at all! i think as an avid x reader and shipfic writer - this is actually a relatively understandable concern. you have to convince your audience that your y/n is also able to metaphorically compete for bkgs heart that canonly has other paths paved
in the situation for bakugou specifically, i think your y/n has to exhibit 2 things. mental strength and any sort of identifiable thing they care about. for bakugou as a character, there is nothing more important to him than respect. your reader, in some way, has to be able to earn his genuine respect. this is NOT limited to physical strength. the nature of bakugous development is that he deeply recognizes strength in all walks of life.
make your reader formidable. maybe they stand up for justice. maybe they’re especially good at handling conflicting and mediating. maybe they’re competent at their job. maybe they’re very good at something trivial like making tea but they dont let bakugou talk down on their hobby. you have a lot of options but i think representing that bakugou values reader insight and respects their viewpoint will lend itself to them being compelling.
additionally, when i say mental strength, i think reader needs to be able to reconcile with bakugou easily. this is one of those bkdk things they dont have which is an ability to communicate clearly lol. this doesn’t mean reader has to have an easy going or even patient temperament - but that reader can say sorry and have just a sliver more of emotional intelligence than bakugou because while i think hes grown a lot, romantic feelings probably turn him into a complete baby.
a reader who is willing to hash things out even at the sake of fighting is very important contrast. while i am a bkdk enthusiast, i think them having a romantic relationship canonly would take a shit ton of effort and therapy. they are deeply intricate but thats a double edged sword. you can play off those gaps.
the most important thing is that you understand bakugou is a character with a natural intensity and presence. this makes him very versatile in the sense he doesn’t discriminate other people at all based on shallow shit. if you want to write a compelling love story with him - any partner can work as long as you keep who he is in mind. anyone who can stand as his equal can be a compelling love interest.

hello! thank you for all your fics <3 may i please ask why you no longer write x reader fics? You don't have to answer, I've just been seeing so much negativity and entitlement from anons making writers stop doing what they love, I hope that's not the reason for you.
Ahh, sorry I don't know when this was sent in; I hope you haven't been waiting long. Don't worry, it's nothing negative. I'm really lucky never to have received any hate or been a part of any drama. I've made lovely reader insert friends and it's been a great community to be a part of. I so appreciate your concern, tho. And I'm glad you've enjoyed my stories. <3
Longer answer beneath the cut.
It's kind of a long story, so I'll start off with the tl;dr. Reader insert was always going to be transient for me. I'm a shipper and always have been, and I kind of knew that from the beginning. If you dig reeeeally deep into this blog, you'll see MONTHS of tags where I say "once I find a ship, it's all over here" and "this ship is calling me over, I swear" etc. Tbh, the breadcrumbs have been laid since near the beginning.
I've been reading fic since I was 12, and it was always shipfic. I never liked OC-centered stories, and was only ever drawn to reading and writing canonverse and stuff that felt similar. I don't enjoy deviating from canon. I talk to reader insert friends who have been into fic as long as I have and they talk about making OCs or pairing their faves with characters they could project onto and that was just...never my game. Idk if it's my demisexuality or my lack of imagination, but it's always given me butterflies to read about two characters who I see as really, truly in love. Whereas with reading and writing reader insert, I never cared about reader-chan. Even when I was modeling her exactly after me. I tried to give her depth and make her a good match for her bnha boy, but it was just that. A match to the boy. She was a stand-in, but not for me. For a character that whoever I was writing for would actually love.
I fell into reader insert by accident. I liked Todoroki upon my first watch of the series, and I wanted to read fics with him, but I wasn't jazzed by his ships. I'm usually pretty easy and get into whichever ships are pushed in canon. Like, if they tried harder with IzuOcha, I'd probably be an IzuOcha shipper, lol. But bnha isn't really committed to its, like, 4 or 5 het ships, so I wasn't either. So I clicked around random stories with Shou, stumbled upon reader insert, and I was like eh, that'll do. If there had been a ship I liked, I never would have read a single reader insert fic ever.
And then I got pulled in. Not by reader insert, exactly, but by the community. The blogs, and the friends I started making quickly, which was crazy to me, because I've never been in a fandom as active as this. In other fandoms, I would make a friend or two, but stuff like discord and tumblr friends and groupchats were new. And exciting, especially in the loneliness of covid.
Then I entered a feedback loop. I started reading bkdk as early as November 2020, and I only started reading reader insert in August, writing it in September. But November was also when I joined my first reader insert discord. All my friends were talking about reader insert, and we were all promoting our stories, reading each other's and so my brain kept on being flooded with fic ideas, headcanons, requests. Especially since I was writing all oneshots, mostly nsfw ones which, for me, didn't take a whole lot of effort or time. I started writing for a more (read: the most) popular character, Bakugou, and my fics were becoming popular, in January 2021 I hit 1k followers, I had decent interax, everything was going well.
By this point, I said at least to friends, if not hidden in tags somewhere on this blog, that I was ready to leave reader insert as soon as I had an idea for a bkdk fic. Cold turkey. I was one foot out the door for months before I actually started writing bkdk. But because of that feedback loop, I kept on having reader insert ideas and I wasn't in the same way talking about bkdk, thinking about it, taking the time to try and conjure up a fic idea. I still had wips for reader insert and I wanted to fulfill those promises as well.
Just some discord screenshots with dates, so you can see that the descent is much earlier than you'd think. Plus, past!me says some of this better than I'm managing to here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The truth is, that I feel nothing towards reader insert now. I kind of want to delete my fics for it all the time because, like, I don't even know who that person was who wrote them. Who was Ana? Not me, and that's why I go by my real name now. I'm not a person who goes through phases, usually. I'm a pretty consistent person, and when I latch onto something, I tend to stick with it for life. Bkdk will be with me for life, I am 100% sure. This was a very strange, out of character blip for me.
And I know that sounds kind of disparaging towards the genre, and I don't mean that at ALL. Reader insert holds so much value as a genre, and it did for me too. You can see from my chat above that it was holding the entirety of my mental health for months. And I'll always value the friends I made. I love that these fics are still enjoyed, so I never will delete them. But I wish that I could fully detach them from myself too. I don't want to give up being able to read the lovely comments and reply back, though. Still, I wish with all my heart that I'd been with bkdk during all that time instead. Bkdk gives me butterflies. It makes me feel warm, makes me feel something like love. Reader insert just doesn't.
There's also a similar story in here about how I got caught in a feedback loop of writing smut too, and I never wanted to be a smut writer. I've written 50 fics or so for bnha, and none of them are my favorites (even the bkdks). My favorite fics, now, are all sfw, shipfic ones I wrote years ago. I don't like that. I want to like my current stuff more. This is why, in addition to retiring from reader insert, I've retired from smut. Smut is also a genre that I love and have mad respect for, but it needs to be as a reader, not a writer. I want to be proud of my fics again, for me, not because they've gotten popular because they're kinky.
So yeah. I left because I never liked reader insert in the first place, but it was a ton of fun to be able to write so prolifically in such a lively community. I'm terribly sorry if this taints my fics in any way to you, like I was flippant while writing them. I wasn't. I always cared about writing them, there was just something big missing for me, and I stayed longer than I should have. That's all. I do appreciate you asking the question; it wasn't an intrusion at all. I give all my love to this community, because it was truly meaningful to me during, as we all know, a terrible, terrible time. But I'm much happier now, and hopefully my next fic will be one I'm truly proud of again.
I hope this answers the question adequately <3

Why is Halo ao3 so bad?
It is my opinion that all ao3 is so bad, usually, but that's because I am a highly picky reader and it's rare that I truly vibe with most fanfics.
...Which is not to say that people who are writing fanfic I don't like have to or should stop. I leave fanfic I don't like alone. I'm only the way I am about Halo novels because they are pro work that has been paid for and my clowning on them is (I hope) harmless as opposed to kicking in the door and being an asshole to someone who's just trying to have fun in their free time.
But when I do browse for fic, it's just, you know. I have special eyes and need my brand.
My main Halo problems are: Ships I don't like (and frequently shipfic at all), TV continuity, crossovers in general but especially mass crossover fics that just have some Halo in them for some reason, stories that are not character-focused enough, and bad porn.
(Honestly, I cannot be surprised Halo AO3 is so full of fics about random characters doing action things because that's what a lot of Halo novels are like anyway.)
There's also just that I'm not in the mood to look for fic to read usually, I check to see if anything sticks out but it has to be a precision strike to something I want for me to actually do it. I'm trying to read a lot of books so I'm kind of busy!
For a Halo fic to really, really grab me it has to satisfy a certain level of lore compatibility (which has gotten really hard with time because now there is so much lore!), caring about the characters I am interested in reading about, and doing them in a way I find interesting (which means a lot of character focus and getting into their heads in a specific way). And a lot of people just aren't interested in what I'm interested in and like... I'm not paying them, so it's not like anyone owes me anything.
Except me.
I owe me things.
So I write them sometimes. And even when I'm at the helm writing it myself, I find that what I want from Halo fic is often hard to do in a way that satisfies me.
(I have some "in order for this to feel real, it has to hurt" and "I can think of thirty reasons this doesn't work and zero reasons that it would" things to fight with that often prevent me from having a good time when I'm doing things by myself anyway. A curse.)

Rules
Interaction rules
First, and it shouldn't be surprising, this blog is not safe for minors. I block any minor who interacts with my posts, especially the nsfw content I share here. Occasionally I purge amongst blank blogs too. At least have an age indicator somewhere on your blog to avoid being blocked.
I'll block you if your blog has anything to do with: racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism, antisemitism, zionism and islamophobia.
Anon hate gets obliterated instantly.
Writing rules
I mainly write nsfw and dark content. Sometimes I indulge even in horror. If you're not comfortable with this stuff, I do not recommend to engage with my writing.
Most of my readers are gender neutral with afab anatomy. In some cases I use fem readers but I try my best to avoid gendered terms to keep my fics inclusive to everyone <33
Things that I'm not comfortable writing:
pregnancy, lactation, heavy verbal humiliation/degradation, piss, scat and other bodily fluids, cheating, knifeplay (especially if the dom cuts the sub), threesomes, cervix fucking, cuckolding, rape, large age gaps, unrequited love
Some things that I enjoy writing:
dubcon, physical humiliation, predator/prey, yandere characters (and overall obsessive-possessive behavior), snappy readers, historical!au, corruption kink, power imbalance, religious symbolism, suspense, complicated dynamics, love-hate relationships, gory metaphors
Other stuff
I don't take requests, but I do love when people leave thirsts and suggestions!
I don't write shipfics except if one of the characters is my OC, but I plan to keep those fics ao3 exclusive. If you don't like that I'm a self-shipper and a canon x oc shipper then don't interact with me.
I don't allow reposts, translations or any other form of plagiarism. Don't share my writing outside of tumblr, especially on tiktok where minors can interact with any content.

Hello! I love love love your writing and I definitely am inspired by you as a writer! I was wondering if you had any guiding principles or lessons learned from writing AUs that'd you'd be kind enough to share. As a reader I'm often not that interested in AUs (like hardly ever) but yours have always completely sucked me in and immersed me! Just wondering if you had any thoughts on the subject you'd be generous enough to share. Otherwise I'm just happy to thank you for all the wonderful stories you've contributed over the years - so thank you!
hi! thank you so much! this is so kind and very cool to hear, given your usual feelings about AUs. i’m the same, i rarely read setting-shift AUs. they tend to just feel 'inspired by' the characters which is usually not what i’m seeking. i think i access characters through story and theme so when it comes to investing in fic i need basic motivations and arcs to align with canon somewhat for it to ring true. whereas i get the vibe the opposite is true among much of fandom-- translating expression/personality is enough, so the character's more malleable, you can use them to play out a huge range of story frameworks (and honestly, more power if this works for ppl! i regret that my imagination is kinda limited when it comes to extra-canon things)
i have few conscious strategies but i’ll try to articulate the AU thought process best as i can (bearing in my mind it’s all just to serve the romance). i hope it makes sense and is helpful on some level
for me, characterisation and theme delimits AU roles, interactions and plot (which takes a backseat in shipfic anyway), never the other way around. i strongly believe experiences and circumstances make the character so there are major limits to what AUs i’d consider writing in the first place for a given ship/character. there has to be some kind of throughline with canon, whether it’s a more direct analogue to their story or i’m magnifying/riffing off a particular facet of the canon i like. theme, ability and personality based reasons for AU occupations (broadly in that order) are better than aesthetic ones. real basic example, i wouldn’t have written my korrasami mermaid AU with asami as the mermaid because i can’t think of a good enough “hinge” for that, especially when korra's right there with her water powers and fantasy dreamgirl naivete
i basically visualise AU versions as being on a leash from canon characterisation. not a rule by any means but when i change something, i kind of ask myself: what’s the reason i’m lengthening the leash? it doesn’t have to be textually explicit but it helps to have an inkling of what it is about the new setting/context that is inflecting the “base” character
therefore it’s worth starting with a strong interpretation of who your characters are in the marrow. and that basically is my guiding principle, since i write shipfic and nothing more complicated. (korrasami AUs come way easier to me than others simply because i’ve been writing them for so many years that (my take of) their character ‘skeletons’ are second nature). i recommend stuff like character workshop sheets-- people always fill them out for OCs but they’re great fic aids
same goes for the interpersonal dynamics: find the essence, the attributes you don't want to sacrifice. i feel like these are more flexible/contingent compared to individual characterisation but i usually like the balance of power and main points of connection between the characters to be intact. if i made a ship manifesto or blueprint, i'd want like 60% it to be reflected in the AU even if a different element was being spotlighted
the setting is almost the most incidental part, just guided by what aesthetics/vibes/prose i’m excited about! i consider how the tone/genre i want for the story and the chosen setting would interact with the characters, which aspects of them it makes sense to highlight here, and what storyline that could inform-- again, rather than them being plopped into a prescribed trope- or plot-mandated AU role. while i think it’s important that most of their personality and some of their motivations (beyond romance) should resonate with canon, imo values more than anything are the core of a character so i try to maintain them inasmuch as they come into play (there are excellent fics that play drastically with characters’ philosophies but to me they always feel like OCs)
with all the above in mind i’ll use korra in some of my korrasami AUs as an example to show that they’re all variations on a theme, what i think is the crux of her: she has an eager, sensuous personality and must navigate being "special", for better and for worse
modern au: it follows canon beats closely. stakes are always dialled down in mundane AUs but the psychic conflict is similar—korra feels like her worth is tied up into a high pressure high profile role, losing that through a debilitating injury catalyses a difficult coming of age of sorts. (also since korra can’t be an avatar in this setting, asami is not a ceo - balance in their circumstances). more ‘normal’ upbringing than in canon -> less sheltered, less volatile
mermaid au: she's the bridge between two worlds. less stifled than in canon, plus fairytale setting -> her personality is more disneyfied, bubbly and innocent. emphasises her itchy fingers and curiosity, an openness to changing the world even in the absence of prescribed duty. special magical powers that still invoke a distant sense of responsibility
royalty au: she's older, more confident, developed- in an inherently restrictive role but one where she has retained a lot of autonomy and isn't cut off from the real world, emphasises her diplomatic role to show her balancing (if not yet reconciling) her responsibilities with more base instincts. she's further along her arc: it's mostly the romance throwing a spanner in the works

Fic Writer Questions!
Tagged by: lovely @closetfascination 💙
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
Ten.
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
146,767 i suck at longer chapters.
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
I’m posting/writing 2 fandoms in ao3: Bohemian Rhapsody RPF and 13 Reasons Why,  with a few crossovers. But I was posting in fanfiction.net years before which was mostly Final Fantasy. And in my previous writblr @benhardypout-archive  where I’ve also wrote for other fandoms aside from the aforementioned, like: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and 6 Underground / G.I. Joe Retaliation crossover
I actually only write in a certain/random fandom (which happens rarely) when an idea strikes. I can sometimes be random.
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Who’s The Boss (borhap rpf)
Stalker Angel (borhap rpf)
accismus; (13rw)
Yin & Yang (13rw)
Getting Over (borhap rpf)
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Always. Though there are times that I failed to.
Why? Because comments gives me life. lol and it’s my way to show my appreciation and gratefulness to my readers.
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Eternity.
But there’s this one I’ve written back when I was in highschool, which I’ve posted in fanfiction.net. (although my writing was a trash back then lol) But I rarely write angsty endings, even though most of my fics have touch of angst in them.
7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
I’d say accismus; Though I always liked my endings to be happy. aha. cause why the hell would I write a story only to end it tragically? jkjk
8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I’m like a sucker in writing crossovers lol but I think it would be:
should he call it fate? a 13 reasons why / plan B crossover
Four Meet Mouse a g.i. joe retaliation / 6 underground crossover
9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Unfortunately. There’s one who tried to make fun of one of my chapters of a certain fic. I can consider it hate as they’re being rude and sarcastic.
10) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Yes, but not raw smut. idk what kind. lol. idek what kind of smuts are there. I just write smut as fitted in my fic.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Luckily, no. It’s not like my fics are that interesting to get stolen. XDDD
12) Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. I never have any confidence.
14) What’s your all-time favorite ship?
It’s safe to say I HAVE A LOT! I multi-ship some characters and I can’t even decide which one I like best.
15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I have published unfinished fics. 💀 But there’s this one borhap fic that’s been in my drafts for years and I can’t ever finish. 😭 it’s a eugene!joe x walter!ben au.
16) What are your writing strengths?
hmm... idk tbh. maybe... romance? lol i always write shipfics after all.
17) What are your writing weaknesses?
Conflicts. 😓 And how to resolve that conflict.
18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it’s interesting especially if one of your characters can speak other languages. For example, I’m mostly writing 13 reasons why atm and my fave character is Monty and I believe he speaks Spanish but idk Spanish so... I think adding a mix of other languages as dialogue would really add to the character. But I’ve never actually written one. And I wouldn’t dare myself to, so to avoid misconception of the certain language.
19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Final Fantasy
20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
There are a number actually, some where mentioned already: Four Meet Mouse, (un)Typical Christmas, Two Eves, Yin & Yang, Should He Call It Fate?, In Peril, I’ll Protect You With My Life
But as of now, my favorite is what I’m currently writing: As Luck Would Have It
I tag: @stephanythedramaqueen ; @heybuddy-drabbles ; @imsnny ; @thosequeenboys 💙

If we’re sticking to Dark Content Brand TM here, then listen...I just never stop coming back to ‘bruce wayne is an abusive parent and also probably fucks his kids’. Delightfully horrible. Extremely excellent. Nudge Bruce just sliiightly to the left and he becomes the worst parent ever, while keeping most of his characterization.
And the endless options to chose from in which kid(s) he hurts and how! and how they all interact based on that! and who finds out and when! and what pieces of canon I can take and shift slightly to fit this new backstory, or not even have to shift at all!
At any given time, I am having three new ideas about bruce being a terrible father.
(If we’re going in the more general sense for tropes, then I just love extreme angst with a happy ending. I want my faves to be okay eventually but they gotta hurt first.)
🤷 What thing that your fandom loves do you just not “get”?
sdfghjk I could list so many little peeves and bits of fanon characterization that I Do Not Jive With and could probably do a whole ask meme about just that. But for now I will just say I’m not that into a/b/o! For reasons unclear to me, it seems super common in the DC fandom.
There’s some stuff in there that works for me, but a lot that doesn’t: I’m not personally into some of the common kinks involved, a lot of times I feel like characters have the entirety of their interesting characterization stripped away for very flat ‘big rough alpha’/‘whimpering weak omega’ archetypes (and ‘beta’ meaning ‘the writer does not care about this character’), and on occasion I feel like the playing with gender and fantasy worldbuilding just loops right back around to barely-modified old-school misogyny in a way that bugs me.
I definitely have enjoyed some PWP a/b/o fics nonetheless! But when I think of the one or two a/b/o fics that I found genuinely interesting and compelling as more than just horny content...I think they’re all deconstructions of the trope lmaosdgfhj. To each their own! But, yeah, I don’t really get it. 🤷
🏆 What do you wish more authors in your fandom would write about?
also so many things, and I could really just @ myself for half of these. (you all are permitted to yell at me to write any of these things.) More comics!titans content, especially the fab five! More terribad luthor/superman content where lex luthor is the horrible man he was meant to be! More terribad Tim/Ra’s, because for a dark pairing that seems to get talked about a lot, there’s really not that much actual dark fic for them! More preboot Roy Harper! More Cass and Steph and Barbara included in the batfam, and less Bruce-And-Four-Boys-Only. (I know I said I wasn’t going to lists peeves on the last question, but I get to slip in one, okay. The new52 and following reboots distorted so many things, and I think one of the worst things it did batfam-wise was convince everyone the batfam is Bruce And Sons And Maaaybe Barbara.)
Also, just in general, I think we could all stand to go back to the source material a little bit and draw from there again. (I definitely include myself in that!) It’s so so easy to just ping pong the same concepts back at each other, but sometimes I feel like we’re stagnating without new ideas. Some of my favorite (mostly not dark) fics I’ve read are really clearly pulling from distinct comic refs, and it lends a grounding and history to the characters that I really enjoy.
💏 Who is your OTP?
You know, I wrote like five answers to this question before realizing that I just don’t think I can answer it. Honestly, it’s very rare for me to strongly ship anything in the sweet/romantic sense. Technically I could say RoyDick for this because they currently are one of those rare cases (and when I was reading NTT I really did love DickKory), but that feels misleading because I rarely-to-never seek out shipfic. I mostly go by individual characters I’m invested in!
When it comes to darkfic (because that is what I made this account for), there are some classic combos that work well--Slade/Dick, Ra’s/Tim, Bruce/all his children--but still, I go a lot more for “which character do I want to see cry today” than seeking out pairings. I do get excited every time there’s a new BruTim darkfic posted!! But, still, I feel like that’s more “I want to see Tim cry in this specific way” than something I’d classify as an OTP. Character >>>> Ship for me every time.
😭 Has a fic ever left you inconsolable?
Sometimes I read a fic where everything is awful to the bitter end and ends hopelessly, but I find myself consciously pulling away from those fics when I sense where they’re going specifically to avoid this. Which I guess implies the answer to this is a firm yes before I learned to do that, but GOD if I can remember which fics they were.
(The only fic I can remember atm that made me uncontrollably cry is ‘the gentle sin is this’ which is actually a largely sweet fic that ends on a decidedly happy note! and also is a neither dark nor taboo roy/dick fic that in no way resembles any of the content anyone here followed me for! so do what you will with that ig????)
Thanks so much for the ask!! Feel free to send others if you want ♥

What is a Remix?
I first heard the term remix somewhere in the wilds of Livejournal back in 2002/2003. It became something fairly common- sometimes synonymous with recursive fanfiction and sometimes not. I’m going to steal pretty hardcore from the wiki fanlore about what a remix is/can be to try and shed some more light on this particular exchange:
A remix is when you re-envision someone's existing fanwork - essentially writing (in this case) your own version of someone else's fic with all your own preferences. It's different from collaborating because the remix does not fall into the "official" continuity of another fan's stories; it's different from being inspired by someone else's [trope] fic and writing your own [trope] fic because the connection between the original and the remix is made explicit, with the remix being built out of the original.
Some people have a very narrow view of what counts as a remix, but ours is considerably broader. If it's related to the original work in such a way that you can see the connection, and the author of the second work calls it a remix, it's a remix.
A remix exchange is when authors sign up to allow other authors comb through their collection of works to find something that inspires them to write their own.
A remix challenge works with very loose standards: In a remix challenge, the mods assign to each writer another participant's body of work to choose from. Each writer selects and rewrites at least one of their assigned participant's stories, with the expectation that another participant will do the same to one of the writer's own stories. Most remix challenges require the plotline of the remix to stay the same as that of the original. The remix challenge may also require that the ending of the original story be preserved; this does not necessarily mean that the remix and the original must end at the same point. We don’t want to put hoops for the writers to jump through outside of their own imaginations. This is about finding inspiration and also giving something back to our fellow writers.
WE ARE NOT “FIXING” OR “IMPROVING” someone else's fic,we are writing a complement to the original, a story that will stand up on its own but will also be interesting to someone who's already read the original. A good remix will give the reader a new way of appreciating the original by filling out the background, giving another character's view of what's happening, or explaining the characters' motivations in a different way.
A remix can take a lot of different forms- the fanlore lists quite a few:
Writers sometimes incorporate dialogue, description, or other details of the original work into their remix story, but it's not necessary. Many remixes keep the same characters, ships and basic plot, especially in remix challenges where there are often rules about what remixers can change.
A discussion on fail_fandomanon produced a list of possible remix techniques, most of them from one post. The list has been reproduced and expanded on below.
POV flip — Retelling the same events from a different character's point of view or switching between first, second, or third person.
Role Reversal — If A was the bank robber and B was the security guard in the original, B is now the bank robber and A is now the security guard.
Sequel/prequel — The remixer explores what led up to the events in the original work, or what may have happened after. (The writer of this list noted that "There's quite a bit of disagreement about whether or not this actually counts as a remix," and suggested that "the best way to resolve it as an issue is to be certain the remix overlaps with at least a couple scenes of the original.")
New spin/tone shift — The same things happen as in the original fic, but they mean something different than they did in the original. For example, a happy time travel fic might be portrayed as tragic by the remixer.
Characterization shift — Similar to the above, but what's changing is the characterization. This "works quite well when you see the characters entirely differently than the person you're remixing."
Genre change — Changing a western into a space opera or changing between slash, het, or gen.
AU to Canon — That modern/space/western AU now happens in the canon era/setting.
Canon to AU — That canon fic is now an AU.
Different place in canon — The same events happen, but they happen at a different point in canon.
Pairing shift — This can have several meanings:
a fic with a main pairing of A/B and a background pairing of C/D may be remixed so that C/D is the main pairing instead. (please be courteous of the original authors ship preferences if choosing this type of remix)
the remix backgrounds the shippy parts in order to focus on the plot (changing a shipfic into a casefic for example) or the other way around.
Pairing change — The events of the fic happen to C/D instead of A/B. This is an unpopular option because challenges tend to disallow it.[2]
Missing Scene — The remixer writes what might have happened in a scene that was not portrayed in the original work.
Expansion/Contracting — The remix expands a 200 word story to 5k or contracts a 20k story down into 1000 words.
For want of a nail — One small detail at the beginning of the story original story is changed, so events spin out differently in the remix.
Mash-up — The remixer takes two or more of someone's fics and combine them.
Changing the ending — Someone dies in the original, they don't in the remix (or vice-versa).
One crucial detail — The remixer pulls out what they consider to be the most important detail of the original fic, then lets everything else go in order to explore that detail.
Scope of events — The remix covers a smaller or larger scope of events than the original. For example, if the original focuses on the events of one day, the remix might cover the entire month that day takes place in, recontextualizing the day the original focused on by showing how it relates to what happened before and after, or it might focus on just one hour of that day.
Trope addition — An extra trope is added by the remixer, for example soulmates or wingfic. This is "similar to genre shift but not quite the same."
Remixers may do several of the above at once, or just one.
Remixing is one of those controversial fandom things, thus the event is considered the author giving permission to another participant to remix their work- permission should be given before attempting a remix. This is considered creating an homage as a thank you, not turning in a marked up work.
Hope this helps answer any questions you all may have!

ATTENTION!!!!
Tumblr media
Hey everyone - (all 375 of you lol, most of whom I’ve made sure are not porn bots) I really really hate having to do this, but I need some help. (The picture is unrelated, I just really love dogs lol)
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Monica. I’m 21 and autistic and had to drop out my last year of high school because of a combination of an abusive teacher and having to help out at home. For now, I’m still living with my parents and entirely dependent on them for food, clothes etc. Something is very, deeply wrong with my stomach and I don’t have a primary care physician yet to advocate for me if I were to go to the hospital, but I’m pretty much constantly in pain at this point. Not always terrible debilitating pain, but it’s there.
On top of this I’m still struggling with severe depression and self-destructive tendencies, and I’m one of the more ‘able’ people in my house. My dad works a lot to be able to take care of us (which we still need assistance with but I can yell about the Ontario government later); my mother has a very rare autoimmune disease - it doesn’t even have a name, but it’s something close to lupus - and has to stay in bed most of the time, so most of the time I’m the only one able to drive.
I’m not asking for a ton of money for my family or anything. I don’t have a gofundme or a youcaring or anything like that, just a Ko-Fi and a PayPal. And if you happen to have extra money laying around and feel like donating feel free, but I very much doubt that since pretty much everyone I know is also struggling right now. I can’t work for a salary. But one thing I can do, and I’m damn good at it too, is write. Please, if you can, take time to read through the following menu of what I’d be willing to write and how much, and consider commissioning me for a fic. I’ll be reblogging/posting/linking to some of my writing following this post so you can see what you’d be paying for.
I don’t have a concrete amount I want to make, but a few hundred dollars’ windfall to take care of myself so my parents don’t have to would be a blessing.
FANDOMS:
-Star Wars; Original, Prequels/Clone Wars or TFA; haven’t seen TLJ yet!)
-Marvel MCU or X-Men
-DC Justice League or Young Justice
-Harry Potter
-Teen Wolf
-Supernatural (I haven’t seen later seasons but I’m familiar enough with the world)
-Shadowhunters
-Wynonna Earp
-iZombie
-Bones
-Tolkien-verse (though I might need to brush up a little)
-Larklight Trilogy by Philip Reeve
-Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor
-Trollhunters
RULES
-I can write shipfic of any variety (I’m best at f/f or f/m)
-Self or Reader inserts are totally alright with me! Just as with any other, I’d need to know some things about you as a “character” to write it properly.
-OCs are absolutely welcome, (yours and/or mine) as long as you give me enough character refs to go on! If it involves someone else’s oc, make sure you have their permission for me to write them! (If they’re your really good friend and it’s a surprise that’s okay!)
-Crossovers, AUs and Universe Alterations are welcome too but details must be talked out beforehand!!
-Basic or borderline nsfw is okay - discuss it with me before! But nothing especially graphic or fetish-y
-Genfic is absolutely totally welcome!!
-I’d prefer not to write excessive gore, main/pov character death, graphic self-harm, abortions or miscarriages, child harm/death or on-screen animal death (as I’d like to keep my mental health somewhat intact during the holidays)
-Payment is due after I’ve written and delivered what we agreed on; executive dysfunction and a shit memory are my enemies here, so if I’m taking a long time, please feel free to message me again as long as you’re nice about it!
PRICES
$5 USD/ 500w
$7/ 900w
$12/ 1500w
$20/ 2100w
$25/ 3500w
Anything over that is generally another $3/100w, but feel free to discuss with me! I’m flexible with prices
And that’s everything for now. If you’ve read this far, bless you abundantly and thank you! If you have any other questions or concerns, you can DM me here or email me at [email protected]

Yuletide Letter 2017
Dear Yuletide Writer,
Thank you so much for writing for me this year! Yuletide has been a much-anticipated part of my year for longer than seems believable, and every year I am delighted to see what someone comes up with in my rare fandoms. I’m an easy-going reader who likes a lot of different tones and styles, and I would be honestly be equally happy with shipfic or gen for any of my requested fandoms (no, really). I adore all the characters I’ve requested this year and am eagerly looking forward to a story about one of them.
My requests this year were pretty thorough, but the following information is below in case you want to know more about my tastes. My AO3 is of course here. I’m Assimbya on AO3, YT signup (consequently), and now-defunct other accounts. Last year I said in my Yuletide letter: “I tend to write meditative female character-centric gen about trauma recovery, and/or fucked-up dub-con darkfic, and those are both totally things I love to read about as well, but neither of those are your style, no worries! I also really, really love romance (particularly in poly relationships), sexy D/s stuff, and world-building or plot-heavy casefic; I'm just not as good at writing any of those.” All that still goes, so if you read my own fic and think that it’s seriously not your style, please don’t try to match it! I am an omnivorous reader.
Some things I like in fic: smart, prickly, messed-up characters especially when they’re interacting with other smart, prickly messed-up characters; complicated or tense relationship negotiation; power dynamics (sexual or not, and either set and formalized or in constant flux); poly relationships; moments of hope/resilience within suffering; canon divergence ('what if?' AUs), darkfic/horror, D/s and related kink (especially bondage, humiliation, pain - either healthy and negotiated kink or also fucked-up dub or non-con stuff); moral ambiguity, or characters dealing with situations where there are no good choices; depictions of trauma recovery or otherwise putting one's life together after devastation; characters who are smart and competent and passionate about things; allusion, experimention, meta-fictional stuff, playfulness with form and language; historical details and world-building; pastiche; things in general being complicated and messy and nuanced
Some things I’d prefer not to read about: dub-con which involves ‘they secretly wanted it’ or ‘they didn’t want it at first but then learned they actually did’ tropes (other kinds of dub- or non-con are fine); traumatic events treated as jokes or insignificant; setting-changing AUs; crossovers (with the exception of Penny Dreadful, which is itself a crossover); slapstick humor; PWP (any level of explicit content is fine, but I’m in it mostly for the characters); heavy focus on bodily fluids of any kind; focus on animal harm, or meat preparation; pregnancy or being a parent of young children (exception for Broken Earth); sexual content with anyone younger than late adolescence; dogs; explicit discussion of disordered eating
The Queen’s Thief - Megan Whalen Turner Characters: Attolia
Prompt: Irene! I think the way Megan Whalen Turner scrupulously limits our exposure to Irene and her thought process is genius, but it also leaves me...well, pretty tantalized. So I would love more of her - of her inner world, her decision-making, her her experience.
I love her steely determination and moral ambiguity, the way we see how she's had to rigidly control her image and emotions and self-presentation in order to maintain her throne and defend her people, and the glimpse of backstory we get in The Queen of Attolia is devastating. If you want to run with that and show us more scenes of Irene's self-development and ascension to power, maybe places where she slipped and had to regain control, that would be awesome.
I would also, like probably everyone else who reads and loves these books, be into more shippy Irene/Gen stuff (the scene in The King of Attolia where they're dancing and he pulls the hairpins out of her hair one by one until it cascades down...sexiest thing I've read in a long time), especially playing with how they navigated their messy, traumatic history together and what it means to love one another and yet to have hurt each other so much.
Irene and Helen/Eddis interaction would also be very much welcome (platonic or not - though if you do ship them, I'd prefer you don't break Irene and Gen up to do that); I'd love to see an exploration of how they navigate their different relations to queenship and authority, and how they get to the type of trust and working relationship we see in A Conspiracy of Kings.
Some things I love in canon: political machinations that remain essentially human; fucked-up traumatized characters messing with and loving each other; narration that manipulates and misleads the reader; the contrast in pace between the frustrating slowness of everyday life and the suddenness of the moments when a decision must be made; the texture of the religious faith; pseudo-hellenic-yet-not worldbuilding; Gen and Attolia’s sexy-scary traumatic bonding; how does power change you?
Penny Dreadful (tv) Characters: Vanessa Ives, Hecate Poole
Prompt: So. I adored Penny Dreadful but that moment in S2 when Vanessa and Hecate see each other for the first time across the crowded ballroom, and then Vanessa starts hallucinating blood raining from the ceiling? And then they never interact again? Most frustrating tease ever.
I would be interested in any ideas you have for giving us the interaction the show didn't, and am open to whatever directions you want them to go in. Enemies-to-allies(-to maybe lovers)? Darkfic of their continued battle, or of one taking the other captive? Deliciously fucked-up family dynamics with Evelyn and Sir Malcolm continuing their relationship? I could think of scenarios upon scenarios, but I'm really open to wherever your imagination takes you. Likewise, I'd be totally into something shippy with them, but just as equally interesting in gen that deals with their parallel journeys towards understanding their own agency in these epic mystical conflicts into which they were both dragged. I'm into the question of how their volatile and intense personalities might play off each other; please do run with it.
I love both Vanessa and Hecate as trauma survivors who are messy and ugly in their survival, who lash out and hurt others but are also trying to figure out how to live in their world, with their experiences. Penny Dreadful is also an amazing ensemble cast, and I would be happy to see other characters making appearances (maybe especially Seward, Dracula, Evelyn - or Brona/Lily, who doesn't really interact much with either of these women, would also be an interesting counterpoint), but I'd prefer the focus of whatever you write stay primarily on Hecate and Vanessa, especially rather than the male characters that tend to get more attention in our fandom. Likewise, I'm fine with Vanessa/Ethan, but if that pairing is present, I'd rather it not be the main center of the fic.
Some things I love in canon: straight-up unapologeticaly going for the gothic atmosphere and narrative and world; colonialism and patriarchy as horror stories in themselves; spiders!; everything about Vanessa; people can make bad choices and still be worthy of compassion; clever and intricate allusion in the crossovering; polymorphous perversity; believing implausible trauma narratives as essential to defeat evil; Lily’s anti-libertine club; pretty dresses
Additional optional note about this fandom: So, I’m a pretty long-term Dracula fan, that’s probably my primary fandom over the years. Penny Dreadful’s engagement with its Dracula characters and material was...inconsistent, and sometimes weird. I personally loved pretty much all the S3 stuff (Florence Seward and her secretary Renfield!), but was really frustrated by the S1 material (her name is Mina but she’s acting more like Lucy and the narrative gives her nothing to do?). If you, my writer, are interested in the Dracula crossover element and want to more extensively explore and reconcile that, I would be up for it, but there’s no pressure on that front whatsoever.
The Broken Earth - N. K. Jemisin Characters: Alabaster
Prompt: Alabaster is my favorite, and makes my heart hurt and rejoice all at once. I know there were very good reasons for his limited presence in The Stone Sky, but I miss him.
So, please, give me more Alabaster! For this more probably than for my other requests I have a strong desire to see my requested character happy and in love, and if you want to go there I would be delighted (I loved loved loved Alabaster/Innon/Syenite, which was finished all too quickly for my wishes), but I would also be very happy to read more about his process of learning and exploration, his reckless and brilliant decisions.
Broken Earth has such dense, textural world-building, which we get largely from Essun and Nassun's perspectives, and I'd be really excited to see what some of the more haunting and mysterious aspects of the Stillness are like for Alabaster to inhabit. In particular, the Guardians are amazingly disturbing, and Alabaster's particular relationship with his Guardian, who he destroys and also saves, was really intriguing to me - I'd love to read something about what it was like for him to exert that kind of power, how much his choice came out of vengeance or self-preservation or compassion (which are so tangled up for him in all his decisions, really?), how he experiences the formalized and violence hierarchy which is the Guardian/orogene relationship.
Another period of his life which I'd really love fic about is his transformation into a Stone-Eater. I know we hear that his consciousness and memory are altered, perhaps unrecognizably from their original state, and I'd be curious to read an exploration of what that might be like for him, from the inside. Is their an ecstasy to that transformation, or a terror, or a relief? What does it mean for him as a culmination to all the losses of his human life? I'd love to read anything you come up with.
Some things I love in canon: apocalypses don’t always mean the end and endings aren’t that clean; people do ugly things to survive but they also do beautiful things; stone imagery everywhere; stone magic; transformation into stone; science fiction elements without losing the numinous; poly relationship as the best part of our characters’ lives; Alabaster and Syenite’s non-sexual love for each other; the nuance of what stigma does to you; the whole terrifying narrative of the Guardians
Dangerous Liasisons/Les liaisons dangereuses - Choderlos de Laclos Characters: Madame de Tourvel, Marquise de Merteuil
Prompt: The Merteuil and Tourvel never really interact in Les liaisons dangereuses! This has always bothered me. We get Mertueil making snide remarks about Tourvel's clothing, we know they've interacted socially, we know Merteuil is devouring all the details of Tourvel's conquest but...that's really all we get, for the most part. And I always wanted more; it felt like a missing piece to the elaborate polygon of relationships which is this book.
I feel like Tourvel is the moral center of the book in a lot of ways, and Merteuil's underestimation of her is crucial to the plot, but also means their interaction could be electric and exciting. Tourvel has actual principles, and Merteuil doesn't believe in those principles! What would that look like between them? Merteuil/Tourvel would be really cool, whether it entailed a straightforward power dynamic with Merteuil in control or something more unexpected and shifting. But a more ideological or intellectual contest would also really excite me. What if Tourvel became aware of the extent of Merteuil's manipulations in her life and decided to do something about it? What if Merteuil decided to mess with Valmont by manipulating Tourvel directly? What if Tourvel someone ended up as a support to Cecile, and Merteuil had to step in order to keep her long game moving? I'd be okay with some degree of Tourvel/Valmont/Merteuil for this prompt, but I'd prefer for the interactions between the women to be foregrounded, even if Valmont is the vehicle to get them there.
Some things I love in canon: epistolarity (2nd greatest epistolary novel in history!); character revealed through text; libertines are fascinating and hilarious but also ultimately self-deceiving hypocrites; everyone is manipulating everyone else and we the readers get to watch; how insidious dynamics of coercion are; Merteuil as an object of admiration and horror and tragedy; going back and forth across the razor-thin line between fun, sexy seduction and the horror of coercion; did I mention epistolarity?
The Chronicles of Prydain - Lloyd Alexander Characters: Eilonwy
Prompt: Eilonwy is the beloved heroine of my childhood, and I so, so, so want more of her.
There are a lot of potential gaps to fill to do with Eilonwy's experience during different parts of the series, and I would be interested in reading about ideas for any of them; Prydain stays so tightly within Taran's perspective that there's a lot of room to be opened up. I am particularly interested in Eilonwy's relationship to her own magic and heritage and history, how she comes to integrate those elements into her sense of herself either during or after the series. Eilonwy has a wonderful, delightful whimsy and way of moving through the world but she is also holds a lot of complex contradictions in her identity, and it would be amazing to have some of those drawn out (those if you want to keep Alexander's tone of whimsy, I'd be perfectly happy to have that as well!).
I am also so, so interested in Eilonwy's relationship to Achren, both before the series and during Castle of Llyr. Achren was probably my first childhood literary crush, and I've always been curious what it would have been like for Eilonwy to grow up around this charismatic, gorgeous, powerful sorceress who was frankly pretty horribly to her while also (I imagine?) being something of a role model. With this prompt I'd be happy with something that stays within the type of tone and content of the series, but also with something darker and messier, if you want to go there. Dark!Eilonwy AU where she stays working with Achren after the abduction in Llyr (either of her own free will or through magic compulsion) would awesome and exciting and if you wanted to write fucked-up Achren/Eilonwy I would be totally into it (though, if you do so, please keep that with Eilonwy either at the age she is in Llyr or older, though I know the mentor/student dynamics are unavoidable and certainly part of the interest).
Some things I love in canon: intensely lovable characters; the everyday and the mysterious as mingled; the amazing smooth transitions between whimsy and tragedy; the gentleness of the narration and everyone’s care for each other; even in a children’s book ethics are still hard; a castle called Spiral Castle; the fact that the magic never really gets explained; the importance of work and commitment and dedication; oracular pigs

Dear creator,
Thank you so much for reading this and signing up for this wonderful annual conspiracy!
I hope you have a lovely time, and that this letter can contribute to it. If any of the fandoms below pique your interest, I’m delighted already, and very interested to hear your thoughts on them.
Fandoms: Nimona, In Other Lands, Captive Prince, Machineries of the Empire
As for reading preferences, I’m happy with a wide variety of tones and genres, from lighthearted shenanigans to dramatic casefics, and pretty much all ratings, but the core of all stories I love is always character interaction. How they play off each other and bring out their best/worst, how they would react to a divergence of events, how true would they stay to their selves in a different setting - these are the kind of questions I’m all chinhands for. POV games, a missing scene, a casefic, canon expansion, backstories and what-ifs are all fair game, so choose your weapon!
I would be very grateful if you could avoid a/b/o and similar kinktropes, played-straight soulmate fic, and character interpretation that runs contrary to their core values. If in doubt, please reach out to me on anon - the askbox is open!
NIMONA (any characters)
It is no mystery at all why I completely imprinted on this book. What is a mystery, however, is how I survived to this day and age without having loved Nimona for years - how did I even live unaware of its existence, up until an impulse purchase a month ago? WHAT A TRAVESTY.
Anyway, I massively adore Nimona to bits: a perfect fusion of story and pictures, chaotic evil Nimona (CHOMP!), Ballister of the big heart and stoic love for strays and SCIENCE, Ambrosius of awkward good instincts and poor decisions  - I just want to pinch everyone’s cheeks and hug them to my chest. For six hours. Approximately. It’s open for negotiation :’)
I’m requesting any characters because I’d be honestly delighted by seeing each one of them <3
A day in casa de Blackheart with Nimona and Ballister! Hatching evil schemes or having a pizza night - or both. BOTH IS GOOD. A flashback to Ballister and Ambrosius’s younger days (that christmas special *clutches heart*). A future with Nimona infiltrating Ballister’s lab and his & Ambrosius’s couch with popcorn and underhanded science! Nimona grumpily acquiescing to Goldenloin’s presence in Ballister’s life! Generally ANY AND ALL HIJINKS feat. heartwarmth and unapologetic monster girl love and fierce protectiveness of each other, much in the spirit of the lovely, lovely source material.
IN OTHER LANDS (Luke Sunborn)
Elliot is a spectacular narrator. Novel-shaped case in point: In Other Lands.
Having said that, what I really, really want to see is a story that makes Luke a narrator, or otherwise puts him at the center. I have it on good authority that he makes one fucking adorable narrator (novella-shaped case in point: Wings in the Morning), but why stop there, right?
Luke/Elliot, either post-canon or slightly amending canon, is always a delight. Luke crushing on Elliot for years in a resigned, semi-unaware (or aware!) manner - he gives Elliot Dale’s name only as a distraction, to get Elliot off his back, and watches with horrified eyes how every member of his family is suddenly out there to set him up with the wrong boy! Luke handling the thought of Elliot the boyfriend with awkwardness unbefitting a Trigon champion (granted, Elliot is kinda more prickly than an average glass ball). Luke having 110% confidence in Elliot and admiring him sass people into submission from the sidelines.
A look at Luke’s friendship with Serene - completely compatible with Luke forever crushing on Elliot, just saying ^^. I suspect lack of Elliot’s Serene goggles could do marvels to building nuance to her character: a little less reverse gender comedy just for the sake of comedy, a little more someone who is clever enough to balance multiple things, connect the dots, and learn, and stand by what she believes is right.
Competence kinkkk. Forever admiring the bookish people, refusing to stop trying to catch up, and zero time spent being conceited about own achievements while fully embracing his role of a champion and defender - that’s the Luke I love <3 Luke’s brand of leadership & charisma - an introverted champion, well-loved by people and easily tired of company of not his people.
Figuring out life after graduation! Casefic of them solving a mystery and preventing a war breakout! Getting assignments and storming the castles! Building cross-cultural competence by throwing Elliot at new people and watching him sign up new pen friends and treaties!
Sunborn family fic! A holiday get together? Drunken exchange of family stories? Another terrible competition that Elliot boycotts? Rachel reading Luke’s letters from year one and with great amusement observing the progression of his “THAT ELLIOT” feelings. God I love the Sunborns <3
I’m not particularly fond of Dale, on understanding that he got enough screentime as is already I’d be grateful if you didn’t center the fic around him. Obviously no objections to him as part of class ensemble, whose names Luke will never bloody remember.
CAPTIVE PRINCE (Damen, Laurent, Auguste, Jokaste)
You would not have wanted to see me at the peak of my CP obsession - dignity readers for miles around were in the red zone for months, I can tell you that. Even my bitter disappointment with many things in the third book didn’t survive the onslaught of feelings that overcome me every time I turn my thoughts to this series. R e g u l a r l y. (If you don’t think Prince’s Gambit is the high point of modern literature, f i t e   m e)
Things that make me happy:
Laurent/Damen endgame, always.
Auguste! Alive and well and fiercely proud of Laurent and quite possibly giving young Damen - his admiring bro - confused boners. Which he manfully swoonstruggles against, because see above.
Clever, competent Damen that drives Laurent up the wall of his fervent refusal to admit any of it affects him
Laurent POVs in general. There is nothing more delightful than a well-crafted narration of acerbic denial of hearteyes, self-crafted personality, hardwon competence and utter self-awareness.
Did I say competence porn yet? Hearteyes, motherfucker, hearteyes!!
Jokaste-Laurent queenbee friendships - vipers united!
Consider this: FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS arrangement for a CERTAIN AGENDA feat. Jokaste and Laurent - preceding or purposefully leading to Laurent/Damen endgame. Benefits as imagined by Damen, the poor cookie? Fake dating for purposes of short-circuiting Damen’s brain with the blonde ratio? :DD
Mafia/noir AUs *swoon* In fact, a variety of modern or historic AUs would be an a+ sandbox to play in and watch the chemistry unfold.
On another note, I have the soft spot the size of Delfeur for Nicaise and particularly Nicaise & Laurent spiky sibling-like affection, so if you think your story could benefit from that, please don’t hesitate to include it <3
I’m absolutely okay with fic that would not include all four - it’s just that I couldn’t omit either Auguste and Jokaste from the list of happy things. You are most welcome to include only one of the two, or none, if you want to concentrate on Laurent and Damen only.
Canon divergences, what-ifs and AUs are super-welcome for this canon. Please feel free to play to your heart’s content!
MACHINERIES OF THE EMPIRE (Shuos Mikodez)
I didn’t know how to request what would essentially be just heartfelt sobbing of PLEASE WRITE FIC FOR THIS AMAZING MEME ART (“please send help my family is starving!!”) - but if! By any chance! This is what you want to do, please disregard everything from math rules to heretic calendrical rituals, and go for it :DD i keep shoving this picture into all of my friends’ faces and get vaguely upset that they don’t immediately agree with me on how brilliant it is; maybe I should revise my strategy and give them the books to read first, hmm.
I’m fond of most of the cast of the books, especially of how competent and done with nonsense they are 99% of their screen time. Mentor relationships were amazing - Cheris and Jedao in Ninefox Gambit was a thing of true beauty, Zehun and Mikodez continuously delight me, and I’m looking forward to what book 3 will bring on this front, too (Nija? Please say Nija!). But as I need to choose something that won’t be guaranteed to make the matching algorithm cry, let me center it around a character that delights me and makes others cry instead.
Mikodez in his younger days! Zehun, I’m so sorry for your loss of sleep and possibly hair, teenagers are the worst, teenage Miki is the worst best Miki, and I am dying to hear all about his notorious Academy heroics.
Mikodez, Zehun, Nija and Cheris, the most terrifying parental equation of this calendar <3
Mikodez and his Questionable Alliances. Kujen “I had a friend once and then the leash broke” Nirai. Jedao - how does Miki’s view of the man change with Cheris in the game, and her (literal) insights about the dead mad general?
Mikodez throwing endless shade on all other factions, especially Andan. (Sorry, Andan. At least you’re pretty.)
Mikodez and his secret humanitarian agenda that he will politely deny forever, get fake-distracted by one of his bazillion hobbies and miss whatever sleep time he had scheduled in the day because he will inevitably get genuinely carried away. Every. Fucking. Time.
As a sidenote, I’m terribly fond of Vahenz <3 Bring her back! Let Vahenz have her fun! Let Mikodez meet his true competition for world domination and in the race towards diabetes.
I really liked Istradez, and would be happy to see him among the army of Mikodez’s high powered babysitters, but am not really in the market for Mikodez/Istradez shipfics.
Thank you very much for reading the letter! Please be assured I’m super excited to read everything you write already <3

If you’re comfortable answering this question, when and how did you begin to write fan fiction? How did you get so good? I wanna start writing fan fiction, like I have the plots and the storylines in my head but I’m scared of how shit the execution is gonna be lol, so I never actually write anything down out of fear. Any tips for an aspiring writer? Thank you so much ☺️
Hi anon!
First: the secret is practicing! Lot of practicing! And read a lot of fiction! Good fiction! And experiment with different genres and styles, find what suits you the most! Do research if your plot needs it! You might get some interesting plot elements out of the fun facts you find.
I started writing fanfics when I was around… 16-17 maybe. But before I did a lot and lot of roleplay online! I can’t remember the exact number of characters that I played, but I believe it’s around 40-50.
Our roleplay community always encouraged me to write long reacts, develop the plot between the characters and not just write about what they do. That I need to immerse myself into the character, add a lil spice to their thought processes, underlining feelings, communicate everything that can’t be seen. Give them more dimension outside of the general stuff, especially if it’s a background character!
So I had a bit of a headstart before writing fanfics. I started roleplaying in 2014 and give it up completely around 2019.
Around 2016 I made a Wattpad account and started publishing some shitty vampire au BTS fics (one of them was extremely popular in terms of numbers, 6k hits, 600 votes, 160 comments idk why people ate that shit up). I had a bbc Sherlock fic and a Gotham fic there but then I quickly got bored of the whole hellsite.
Idk why but I started with multi chapter fics instead of one shots. Maybe because I like plot driven fics, I love the foreshadowing, twists, the slowly evolving connections between characters. But this means a longer fic and more practicing.
I also wrote two original stories. Just for myself. I developed the plot to be around a novel length but I never finished them sadly.
And ofc I’m an OC parent. It’s a must have to create at least one character and fit them into the current fandom that I’m hyperfixated on. And I always put a lot of effort to write them with the least amount of canon divergence.
I was a lil wary to start writing in english mostly bc my roleplay buddies frequently told me that my english skills are… well, bad. But I got the most wonderful proofreader who not only corrects my flaws but makes the whole fic a hundred times better <333
So… I guess the reason I got “so good” is the decade worth of experience.
I’m rooting for you anon! The most important thing is to have fun with what you write! Whether it’s a shipfic, ocxcanon or reader fic. With every lil sentence you write down you’ll get better and better! Progress comes with time!
