sometimes you see a single image on the internet and that changes your plans for the rest of the week
seahorse is made from lps #426 that i had horribly defaced with sharpie in a customization attempt when i was young (you can see the red ink refusing to give up relevance in the fins especially lol) and this rarity eqg mini
Tumblr media Tumblr media
cat is from the lps mcdonalds series that i had managed to chip off its base and use as a normal pet and oh my god was this thing a bitch to get the head off of. that plastic does not cut easy let me tell you. also this blythe (all those accessories are long gone)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
dog is lps 883 and oh god im gonna kill someone i forgot to double check which eye shapes she had. i sketched her with the clover ones but was looking at pictures and saw mostly the single dot ones and second guessed myself without actually looking at the damn doll. pretend i drew them right. her body is this flutteryshy and her clothes from this blythe. im planning to use the eqg heads for another project
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and finally the dragonfly is #715 that i had broken the wings for a loooong time ago and we would use it as a cricket instead. kinda fucked up. her body is another lps blyth with arms harvested from yet another lps blythe and i dont like to be wasteful so heres a manner of beast

ok thats all ffrom me, sid toy story, for now see you laters

Equestria Girls is pretty fun, yeah. Honestly, while the later entries may have better stories and animation, they don't have nearly as many horse shenanigans, so the first will always have a place in my heart.
A funny thing about you watching it after watching seven seasons of FiM is that you know for a fact that Flash Sentry is not a factor at all in Twilight's life. But we didn't know that when the movie came out! So a lot of the reaction to the movie at the time was "oh god is this guy really going to be Twilight's permanent love interest?" Without that factor, you can see him as the silly way to get in a high school movie cliche that he is.
If you're watching Rainbow Rocks next, then remember to watch the prequel shorts before it and the encore shorts after (especially the encore shorts!). You'll miss out on a full five songs otherwise.
hell yeah! we intend to watch all the shorts and all that. And yeah, Flash Sentry initially seemed mega boring but knowing that he had NO influence on the series was really funny considering how much they play up Twilight crushing. I think EQG is really fun when you just embrace the super corny high school cliche stuff! The thing that won me over for him was just seeing him see Twilight do weird horse girl shit and go "okay i can fuck w that" and join her, even if i know he's not relevant thats super funny, charmed me over to the dude. poor Flash though like every girl he tries to get with is like 27 and also a fucking actual horse

Ladybug in the Winx Club (2004) style!!
This one was a little challenging because the Winx style is really particular, especially the faces. I was going to replicate the colored lines you see in the promotional art, but I rather it look like the original show itself (especially since this pose is from Ladybug's transformation)
I planned on making a faux screenshot that looked like the transformation sequences in the original Winx series, but this was already a lot of work.
If any Winx experts have any nitpicks, please let me know 😭 I wanted it to look as accurate as possible
Planning on doing a picture of EQG Twilight in the Winx style in the future 🌌

i really like a lot of the concepts and characters behind g5 but weve barely seen any big stuff with them and it kinda makes me worried. maybe i was spoiled by g4's series and toys first deal, idk. this is a series that was made as merch first, content later, but g4 felt like they had more of an idea of the content beforehand, yknow? does that make sense, idk
like mlp was Characters and world first, and base the toys around that. introduce this world and then build off from there, and make the contents release easy to digest and simple with just a show, then a comic spinoff and a movie spinoff with eqg
mlp g5 started off with a movie (that also needed to set up its world while ALSO tying in with the previous generation but not answering a lot like why is everything different now) then a series of shorts, then a special, then a comic series thats supposed to be answering lore but in a release limbo,
like they just started everything way too fast and because of the lull in releases it just kinda makes me antsy especially since, again, this is a sequel series that undoes basically all the work of the previous one and is hopefully gonna explain how that works
i really think they shouldve just did a full Reboot of the series entirely. you can keep some names and stuff like g4 did for previous generations but g5 would probably fare a bit better if it was just a cold hard reboot of the entire series so were not all sitting in confusion

Theory: Villain's unicorn henchman might be the missing element
I've had a theory for a while that we are missing someone in the main cast, I'm not sure how consistent gen 5 is being to gen 4, but gen 4 loved the number 6.
6 elements of harmony, 6 pillars of Equestria, 6 students who low-key use the elements sort of that one time? And it's very balanced, 2 earth ponies, 2 pegasi, 2 unicorns for both the pillars and the main cast. The balancing honestly feels as more of a structural thing than an actual lore thing, Twilight got her wings in the s3 finale, had a season focused on her adjusting to that, and a new unicorn protagonist was introduced in s5, I'm certain it was to keep the balance, (you could also argue the same thing for eqg with sunset shimmer, but tbh that franchise feels less planned so i doubt)
we're missing a unicorn in gen 5 and it felt very odd to me that we were. I had a thought that the netflix series would introduce us to them and, I'm guessing it has. I bet the henchpony will be reformed and join the main cast
see below, she looks distraught for a moment before returning to her previous look while the alicorn is monologuing, it feels deliberate to animate her looking down and her ears folding back a bit as if she's regretting helping, especially in a show with not the greatest animation, probably because of the budget, why waste time animating this when all the focus in the scene is on the alicorn? By this alone I think she's going to be redeemed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe the mane 5 are following the pattern of representing elements, not least because Pipp sings 'harmony' in front of the crystal, while talking about the crystal
Obviously we could draw personality comparisons to find the elements, but I'm not sure if those actually align with what element they represent, so my guess:
Sunny is magic (obviously)
Pipp is loyalty (in the movie she's upset with her sister for abandoning her, is loyal to her mother in keeping the secret but even more loyal to her sister in not telling her mother about the crown)
Zipp is honesty (wants to tell everyone about the royal families secret, becomes a detective, which is literally just searching for truth)
Izzy, I'm not completely sure, but I'm guessing generosity (one of the first things she does in mym is fix Sunny's lantern, she also can be compared to rarity because of her creativity)
Hitch, I'm less certain but I think kindness (considering he has a collection of animals and now a dragon child, obvious Fluttershy comparison now that he can talk to them, and a character in the game outright describes Hitch as kind when she's basically saying she has a crush on him. I doubt the game is canon at all, but they mightve received notes on the characters from the series's team)
so ig this unicorn will be laughter? that's not impossible, though it's not the obvious choice for a redeemed villain. If we follow assigning personalities to elements then (pinkie/Izzy, twilight/sunny, rarity/Pipp, rainbow/zipp, fluttershy/hitch) that leaves the unicorn with honesty, which is more logical tbh, at least while knowing nothing about her. But they might change the names (like they did between the pillars and the elements) and hope could be fitting for a reformed villain, so could strength
idk just some thoughts c:

i am curious since i’m not sure if i ever got your opinion on this; flutterdash !
character ship bingo
HI MOLLY!!! I actually would love to share my thoughts about them!!! hehe💛💙
Tumblr media
Nowadays I'm more neutral on flutterdash but they used to be a favorite for me along with twipie when i first got into mlp. it was twipie, rarijack, and flutterdash!! though as i've gotten older and rewatched, i've been attached to other pairings like fluttercord and pinkieshy or pinkiedash. but i still love flutterdash, it's really nostalgic to see them together and their childhood friends trope is easy to build upon!! the fact you and zora have the potential to be that is like pleading emoji irl because it's so sweet and you really are them. it just makes sense!! i love how they compliment each other and bring out the best in one another, especially as the main series progressed but also in eqg!! i love rollercoaster of friendship,,,, omg. on the topic actually and it might be my bias for eqg but i have a soft spot for flutterdash being with pinkie pie. but yes !! it's v cute i likey :3 they're my friends and they're ccs so it means the world when they're happy

all time favourite top gay ships
Tumblr media
be aware that this list is based on how much i ship it.
Tumblr media
korrasami
i really do love this ship, but i guess i don’t obsess over it as much since the series is over and they are already canon. i still love them tho🥺
Tumblr media
Catradora
so i do i ship this a lot however it’s the fandom and fanart that really still keep me attached. and since the show is over, i’m kind of falling out? lol help me
Tumblr media
Tyzula
i’ve been shipping this for a long time and at the time no one really had an opinion on it but now that it’s making a comeback, i’m like hell yeah!
Tumblr media
Mabifica
i ship the hell out of this ship but like i said before, it’s the fandom and fanart that still keep me attached. considering that the show has been long gone for some time now yk.
Tumblr media
Yuu x Touko (idk the ship name)
this is the first anime i watch that i actually prefer the dub better than sub. i also like this yuri because it’s a more deeper yuri. most yuri’s are just kissing and shit, but i like this one. havent read the manga yet pls no spoilers🥺
Tumblr media
flutterdash
i used to ship this in 2013 but then i fell out but i’m back again. one of my all time favourite ships, and then watching equestria girls in some scenes there are just no heterosexual explanations for! xD
Tumblr media
diakko
their moments and interactions speak louder than words could ever describe. especially near the end of the lwa series on netflix, there were moments where today i still can’t get them out of my head. also i love a good slightly enemies to lover beat.
Tumblr media
rarijack
i don’t mind appledash but i really wished they made rarijack canon in fim considering that they never and probably won’t ever finish eqg. eqg made me ship it the most bc b4, i didnt ship aj or rares with anyone.
Tumblr media
sciset
love sciset a lot! when i say i love sciset i don’t like sunlight as well, i much rather prefer sciset just bc they have more moments. and i feel like sunset had a crush on twi first and then twi started to like realize she had feelings for sunset as well; it totally explains that gay scene on the yacht at the dinner table lol.

Follow up question: how did you get into collecting EQG and Monster High dolls?
It was mainly an "on-a-whim" thing back in the day, since I was *super* hype into the EQG series that was rising in popularity and I was really looking to get some merch from the series somehow. So when I found a couple Sunset and Twilight dolls when I went into the store I just knew I had to grab them for myself lol. Though looking back some of the actual dolls themselves were... well, not the "prettiest"/most-accurate looking, I still had my fun collecting as many as I could so they'll always have a special place in my heart.
As for Monster High, it was partially from some nostalgia cause I actually did obtain a Draculaura doll waaaay back when the series was still new, but I didn't get super hype to collect anymore until a lil later in highschool when I could afford my own dolls. That was when my MH fan phase was pretty hype cause I ended up watching all the movies (of the classic series), watched most of the web series, and though I didn't get *every* MH doll released, I was pretty proud of the ones I was able to obtain anyway (my latest being a Kala M'erri doll from the "Great Scarrier Reef" movie).
I'm not sure if I'll be able to collect more EQG or MH dolls anytime soon (especially with the current focus I have on Rainbow High), but it'd be fun to get back into them again I'm sure, especially with MH's reboot coming around the corner~

tell us about your ideas for an eqg series finale!
(i posted this on twitter first !! so this would be like ... The Finale Part 1)
Graduation is approaching but the girls still have to constantly fight magic. It’s become more frequent, and they’re not sure they can keep up, especially if high school’s coming to an end and they’ll go their separate ways. The portal is cracked open and magic keeps flooding through, so while everyone else is wrapping up and preparing for graduation day, Sunset can’t help but think that all of this is her fault.
They get into another battle, and they save the day, but barely. With the help of communication from Princess Twilight, Celestia, and her own findings, Sunset comes to the conclusion that the only way to stop the magic is to get rid of the portal for good, cutting the connections between the two worlds permanently.
The finale has Sunset struggling between making the decision. She knows she has to do this, but will she choose to stay in the human world with her friends.... who are about to head their separate ways anyway leaving her on her own; or should she jump through and stay in her original world where she knows she can be a better help, having company and dealing with magic and creatures she’s always been familiar with? She keeps this to herself though, she can’t let the girls know, they would talk her out of it, and besides, they’re graduating. She wants them to have this. They deserve it.
Then, graduation day. They’re in the middle of their ceremony, all excited and dressed up. But there’s another battle. They’ve been fighting for a while, it’s too much and the girls can’t keep up. Sunset looks back at them, and not being able to hold the creatures back, she knows what she has to do. She’s still looking at them, in their torn graduation gowns and their caps scattered on the ground. They’re all yelling at Sunset because she’s frozen in place... what could she be thinking? Sunset looks around, and then at Twilight one last time, closes her eyes, and whispers “I wouldn’t trade you for anything either, but you don’t deserve to live in a world that I broke.” and jumps through the portal, taking the creatures and the magic with her, closing the portal permanently.
And that’d be where Part 1 ends.

What is your opinion on the Shadowbolt 5 (Sour Sweet, Sugarcoat, Sunny Flare, Zemon Zest and Indigo Zap) as characters? Do you have any ships for them?
I love the Shadowbolt 5! I really, REALLY wish we’d had more specials starring them and had actually been used to their full potential.
Dance Magic was an excellent reintroduction to the characters and their dynamics to be rivals to the Main 6, but with the potential to be friendly rivals. If the show had been a TV series with actual 22 minute episodes I could EASILY have seen entire episodes revolving around one of the girls going up against their Shadowbolt counterparts or the girls developing a friendly rivalry with the group!
Like, it’s a LOT more fun when you have someone to compete against than just competing against something for the sake of it. So giving the girls rivals for their futures would’ve been amazing!
Like, Sports competitions where Dash has to go up against Zap, or some kind of Gardening/Botany competition of Fluttershy vs Sour Sweet, a scholastics competition of Sugarcoat vs SciTwi, or a fashion competition between Sunny and Rarity.
Like honestly the girls had endless potential, and given that they ended Dance Magic on good terms there was EASILY room for all sorts of relationship dynamics to play out between them and the CHS girls! Especially given the dynamic of Crystal Prep having always beaten CHS in the past and the school giving the girls issues for befriending the Crystal Prep girls!
GAH! The lost potential! They only ever showed up for two specials and sporadically as BG characters but there was SO MUCH you could’ve done with them! And they all had fun quirky personalities to boot!
I don’t really have any ships for them though, at least not at the moment. Due to their nature of only having appeared a limited number of times there wasn’t a whole lot of dynamics to test their personalities against. And of course different writers interpret them differently, so you get very different dynamics from writer to writer.
Either way, girls are woefully underrepresented and if there is any kind of EQG reboot I hope they’ll come back and get the proper respect they deserve!

So, did you guys have any plans on rarijack before the show ended? Like we're you planning on making them explicit canon? If not, do you have more headcanons? Lol, i love hearing your ideias of what these two were up to!
Ahhh thanks! These two are loads of fun. @marvelandponder and I have bandied some ideas around recently, just for fun. I’ll talk about those here and then have a longer answer about ships and how the show worked in general on that subject under a cut ‘cause it got really long.
Okay, so extended headcanon with Rarijack after high school! So they’re both making a go of it in (EQG-equivalent) Paris, having their ups and downs, learning how to live away from home, in a new culture, learning that sometimes it’s not as perfect and romantic as they thought, or conversely that it’s not as terrible and totally alien as they thought (guess who’s who here). And living together for the first time, having to learn to cohabitate and share a space, learning to juggle very busy lives with their relationship, still keeping in touch with their friends from high school, meeting new people and making new friends, and in general being extremely busy. Far, far too busy to really think about plans after Rarity’s apprenticeship is done and AJ’s culinary education is done. Nothing really beyond moving back to Canterlot, at least until they figure out where to go from there. Paris is great but it’s not home and they both need to see friends and family for a while.
Well, nothing except moving back home and getting married.
So after they move back and have some down time, and after some light planning, they announce their engagement. Of course there’s a huge group party for this at the Apple family farm, and every girl who’s moved away absolutely makes sure they’re there for it. It’s basically a giant welcome home/reunion/engagement party.
After everyone’s recuperated from that, Rarity throws herself into opening her own online boutique with the hopes of being able to expand into a physical shop someday. She also throws herself into wedding planning with Pinkie; those two learning to collaborate would likely be trial and error at first but once they start really communicating and brainstorming, they start coming up with some incredible ideas.
Not much for party planning or understanding wedding decorations, AJ tries to settle back in at the farm but it’s running pretty well without her these days, so she has to figure out new ways to make herself useful. Ends up getting involved in a farm-to-table restaurant with her homemade pastries, which then leads to her helping to arrange for other farms in the area to get involved in similar endeavors with restaurants, schools, and local charities.
And I think that’s about as far as we got so far. So yeah! I dunno! Hope it’s fun! If not, feel free to ignore it! :D
Re: shipping
So, okay, firstly, there’s kind of a sticky situation in terms of canon couples in a show like this, especially when it’s been on for a while and lots of people have lots of preferences for ships and whatnot. In that if you make one of them official, you’re by default sort of taking away everyone else’s ship in terms of what might be canon. (Note: you can and should ship whatever you like, that is literally what fandom is FOR.) And to be honest, we’re not really in this to upset fans, even though sometimes we accidentally do, or it happens as a result of telling a story we feel is important. And since shipping is a very personal thing to a lot of people for a myriad of totally valid and important reasons, sometimes addressing this stuff can feel like walking into a minefield. Especially for me because I don’t really have any major shipping preferences, and I’m just out here sharing my personal ideas and headcanons and giving some info on what the intent (as I understand it) was with what we were doing on the show. Which, let me be clear, does not invalidate anybody’s shipping preference or headcanon; there was always some wiggle room to try and accommodate most possibilities and a bunch of different ways of reading things.
The thing of it is… the show can’t be all things to all people, it just isn’t possible to do. There’s not something wrong or deficient with anyone’s preferred ship, it just may or may not have been a direction things were going. And even then, we really only had one actual official couple that was explicitly written to be that way; everything else was either hinted at or just up for grabs by whomever liked it. Nobody who worked on the series can control what you ship, that’s not within our power, it’s not something most of us would desire. Your ships are yours, regardless of what happens in canon. (And yeah, that’s not a perfect situation either, believe me, I know.) Chances are very high that at least one person working on the show shipped the same thing a bunch of fans do, and a lot of people had multiple ships, and conflicting ships and like, we weren’t all one hive mind on the subject either, trust me.
Which brings me to point number two: the people at DHX, myself included, didn’t have any input into the story ideas or scripts we got (beyond the directors making minor suggestions on early drafts which may or may not have been implemented or rejected, depending). So as much as a lot of us might personally have wanted to make some couples canon, we really didn’t have a say in that. We could suggest things visually, like we did with Rarijack, and then try our best to keep that consistent with the subsequent material we were given, but we didn’t have the ability to be like, hey, let’s have them go on a date or declare their feelings openly. And to be fair, H*sburo really let us run with a lot of the stuff we wanted to do. So much of the Rarijack hinting in Rollercoaster of Friendship, we honestly thought would get called for revision, either by the company or by S&P, but somehow none of it did. “Surprised” is an understatement for the feeling of when we found out that none of it got called after we submitted it. And then again with the design for Ragamuffin– not a peep from anyone, nor any dissent on the whole bit the board artist added with everyone making the connection between his appearance and AJ’s. So, we never got any scripts where they’re explicitly dating, but they sure let us do a lot in terms of implying it. No clue what may have been pitched by the writers, all of that was totally removed from us and what our role in the process was.
(Also, onscreen kissing wasn’t a thing we could do at all. The TimberTwi date episode at the planetarium originally had a kiss at the very end that made it fairly far down the approvals process but eventually did get called and was changed. And that was the only truly “officially official” couple we had in the series, so. Yeah.)
So, all that to say that I really can’t answer any questions about what was planned or what was pitched for ideas, because I truly don’t know. I wish I did!

Well, seeing as Season 9 starts this Saturday, I might as well compile a list of the things I wanna see happen in the show one final time:
~Babs Seed returns to the show (It was confirmed that both Weird Al and Patton Oswalt would return as Cheese Sandwich and Quibble Pants respectively, so it only makes sense that Babs makes a comeback in this season, too (She’s become my second favorite crusader in recent years.).)
~Rainbow Dash does a Sonic Rainboom during a Wonderbolts performance (Has anyone else noticed that Rainbow only does her signature stunt move when she’s off duty? What’s up with that? You’d think that since she used the Rainboom to save the Wonderbolts from dying that they would allow her to pull it off during an official show, but apparently not.)
~The Equestria Girls series finally becomes canon (Seriously, it’s been six years and they’re hasn’t been one reference to EQG in the show. Oh sure, Hasbro makes the MLP Movie canon but not EQG? WTF man?)
~The Mane Six confront a villain and defeat it without getting captured and/or requiring help from a third party group (This one’s pretty self-explanatory, especially to those who’ve been following this blog. Oh, and before anyone says it, no the Season 7 finale Shadow Play does not count because even though the Mane Six did not get captured by the Pony of Shadows, they still needed help from the Pillars of Old Equestria to take him down.)
So there we go, that’s the things I’m wishing will happen in the show before it unfortunately ends. Maybe some of the things written here will become a reality, and maybe they won’t. We’ll just have to wait and see...

How do you feel about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic + Equestria Girls nowadays, with all the progress they've made over the course of many seasons and a bunch of movies?
It’s all good fun stuff. While there have been ups and downs, I genuinely think there has been an upward trend of quality in the stories, character writing, world building, and art/design of MLP and EqG.
Having said that, I feel like both have expanded to the point that they’re chaffing against the restrictions set in place back when no one know what the show was gonna be like. There are some weird inconsistencies in the lore (like we still don’t know what an alicorn is). It’s getting harder and harder for the show to mix things up without dramatically changing the formula; Most of the main characters have gone through what arcs and growth they can, for example. Hence the New 6--but that’s only gonna go so far.
EqG’s plot kinda keeps jogging in place as well (though again, the writing and especially the art keeps improving). They have these magical amulets now, but they sorta only barely figure into the plot. They completely dropped the storyline about Sunset’s will-she-or-won’t-she go back to Equestria, probably because it would have changed up the status queue so much.
That’s why I’m actually looking forward to the next gen of MLP--it seems an ideal time to set up a long term plan for the series growth, right from the beginning, and create a world that makes more sense from top-to-bottom; and maybe we could look forward to an evolving story-line this time. Though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have concerns with Gen 5 as well (but I’ll save that for another post and another time when we know more).
Basically, I like MLP and EqG a lot--and I feel they’ve done nothing but improve. But they’re starting to stagnate, and it might be time for a change of pace.

SCHOOL DAZE THOUGHTS
We have now reached the 8th season of the show. The 2nd to last season before things are over for good. We only have 50 episodes left after this two-parter now. Let’s hope they can make at least most of those count.
Every season opener of MLP tends to set the tone and/or set up some kind of arc throughout the season. And this season’s theme seems like it will center around this School of Friendship Twilight opens up just a day or more after the end of the Movie.
Which speaking of which, oh yeah in case there was ANY sort of doubt that the movie was going to be canon to the show or at the very least be given the Equestria Girls treatment of “Ignore it ever happened, not even a significant character name drop”. Within the FIRST TEN SECONDS they explicitly reference something that happened in the movie. About 30 seconds in, Tempest is mentioned and even told what she’s doing while also telling why she likely won’t appear much if at all this season (I suppose the real reason is they probably couldn’t afford Emily Blunt for too long but good to have something in-universe at least). Reminder that we still have not heard Sunset Shimmer get named in any episode of the main show while within the first minute of the first episode that takes place chronologically after the movie both references events and names a significant character. That’s the clear proof you need to determine a movie canon. Equestria Girls might be considered canon by the Staff and by now probably accepted as such for the most part by the fandom as well. But until something like Sunset appearing or at least mentioned in the main show, or at the very least the mirror makes a cameo appearance in the spot it does in Twilight’s castle. Then there’s going to remain that little seed of doubt of Equestria Girls may not be canon the main show. But in it’s own universe where the main show is canon to it. Even the appearance of the Sirens in the Season 7 Finale, while surely significant is hardly as confirming as what the first minute of this episode did for the MLP Movie. I’m not saying myself that EQG is non-canon, as by now I think it’s at least a little clear that it is. But they haven’t made it any easier to really say EQG has much of an impact on the main show. There’s room to doubt events of the EQG series happened, there isn’t any for the MLP movie after the first minute of this episode.
But anyway, time to get to the point of the episode. Twilight is opening a friendship school that isn’t just for ponies, but also many other races/species in Equestria in an attempt to spread the ponies way of friendship to regions outside of Equestria. It’s an interesting idea, time will tell how it all goes down. There’s some execution of it that might be a little questionable by making all of the Mane 6 the only teachers in the school. Some have already brought up that obviously some of the Mane 6 already have full-time jobs of some sort. Rainbow’s a Wonderbolt who’d likely have to be called in for shows and such sometimes, Rarity owns a business so weighing that and being a teacher sounds kinda difficult, AJ works on a farm with so many chores to do, etc. Perhaps it could of been better if they had included more teachers other then the Mane 6 to have available, mainly already fully established characters. I can’t exactly speculate which ones would work as some may have the same issues of bringing in some of the Mane 6 as teachers. Another solution would be to have new characters, but that does come with the problem of character overload. There was already a lot of new characters with the students as well as the EEA’s leader. Imagine having a full slate of new characters for the purposes of teaching as well. That’d be an absolute nightmare to try to cram that all in a 44 minute special in terms of introducing both teachers and students. At least with the Mane 6 we already know them well, even if that comes to the detriment that there would be cases where the characters would be far too busy to teach. But maybe they’ll have substitutes for when they can’t come in? That could be a potential solution. Overall though we’ll just have to see how this season plays it off and maybe even how the Final Season coming up continues on with the school as things wrap up to overall determine how well they execute this idea. It has potential for some fun stuff, but it could also turn up to be a disappointment. We’ll see how things go down.
On to the EEA though, I’ll touch on a certain subject later in this thing with them. But right from the get go when Twilight is giving her presentation you can tell something’s not quite right with the committee. And that’s before we find out about something later in the episode. Besides the admittedly hilarious closeness to one of the most despised gaming companies (Or even companies in general) EA, it’s mostly old ponies giving a skeptical glare as whomever is presenting their idea. Chancellor Neighsay (Voiced by the well-renowned voice actor Maurice LaMarche, famous for being the voice of The Brain from Pinky and the Brain. Neighsay’s voice is even strikingly similar, though not exactly like The Brain’s) being the towering figure that him alone sounds like he just has that exterior about him of a really skeptical person. He skims through Twilight’s proposal, and then presumes that Twilight’s school is about protecting the ponies way of life from dangers rather then Twilight’s plan of having Ponies get to know different creatures from outside Equestria. This obviously foreshadows the big plot point with Neighsay later, but I’ll get to that when I get to that.
But anyway time to get to the new students! I’ll leave a thoughts on each of them
Sandbar: I think I need to get to know Sandbar in more episode to really know what he’s about. But he’s fine thus far. And hey for once Vincent Tong gets to voice a character that’s NOT a love interest nearly universally hated by the fandom! (In case you’ve forgotten, he’s voiced not just Flash Sentry, but also Prince Blueblood and Feather Bangs)
Gallus: Gallus seems like a neat griffon granted he’s going to be a bit jerkish being that’s what most Griffins seem to be. But he’s obviously going to be the Dash in the group of friends in terms of sticking up for them when they need him.
Yona: A clumsy Yak that has a few endearing qualities for sure, I know not everyone’s a big fan of the Yaks, but I feel Yona may have potential to be more tolerable then most of the other yaks.
Smoulder: AKA The newest ship for Spike pretty much. Maybe some people thought Ember is just a little too old for Spike. If so, then Smoulder might be their answer. She’s obviously still older then Spike but she’s still closer to his size. So might make it a bit easier to see a ship between them.
Ocellus: Well ain’t she a pretty adorable changeling. Not too bad design for a nu-changeling either. Plenty of potential of fun situations for a recurring changeling character so we could see some good things from her later too.
Silver Stream: She’s perhaps my favorite out of the multi-species six. And not just because she’s connected to the seaponies from the movie. She’s full of energy, and her excitement for mundane things like stairs is charming and meant as kind of an odd to the fish out of water tropes we saw back in The Little Mermaid when forks were called Dinglehoppers. I’m certainly excited to see more of her after this two-parter
As we progress we get the natural events of what happens when a school about making friends seem to focus more on being a boring normal school with teaching guidelines that doesn’t quite work for every one of the students. Especially the non-ponies involved. And the group we saw earlier skip out on what happens to be the most important day for Twilight to show the EEA how things are progressing. But what happens as a result when Neighsay discovers the non-pony student that is no doubt a big subject that anyone surrounding the very volatile political climate right now could see this as quite awkward.
There’s no way around it, Neighsay is pretty much a racist. As soon as he sees there are non-pony students he sees Twilight as not going by his standards that the positive teaching be meant only for Ponies. And thinks other species are not as capable of learning friendship like Ponies can. There have been episodes before that are vaguely or could be considered from a point of view a bit political. Some episodes even are hit with political controversy even if that might of not been the intention. But it feels like in this case it is very intentional, especially in this volatile political climate. This is very much the equivalent of a high-up bureaucrat shutting a school down because the school is allowing students from places that either been enemies in the past or have otherwise rejected co-operation that benefits their country more and letting them mingle with those inside the country. I wouldn’t be surprised if in many red states if their parents were watching the episode with their kids. They’d turn off the TV and tell their kids to do something else knowing very well what this episode was implying. I wouldn’t even be surprised if there are kids who are now no longer allowed to be watching the show or buying MLP toys because their parents see this episode as attacking political beliefs. It honestly makes Neighsay perhaps one of the most realistic, and because of that one of the more scarier antagonists in the show. Neighsay’s not exactly a villain, he’s not trying to take over the world but he’s nonetheless someone with beliefs that is at odds with the message of Friendship for all that the ponies often try to send. And it’s likely he’s probably not the only pony in Equestria like that if he got such a high position. Despite the ponies having dropped their racism in the past for each other’s type since Hearth’s Warming Eve. It seems to have shifted at least for some regarding non-pony species. There’s some understandable reasons why for ponies to distrust them such as Dragons terrorizing ponies, Changelings only having recently been made mostly good but the Canterlot invasion as well as kidnapping all the princesses and the rest of the Mane 6 is likely still a sore spot about them, Yaks are destructive and don’t have the best tempers, Griffons seem non-caring about a lot of things, etc. But in a society that seems to be easily forgiving, apparently there’s some ponies unwilling to give the same 2nd chance that they gave formerly evil ponies even if they did worse things then any of the non-pony species did. Looking at Starlight especially, nearly ripped the ENTIRE present timeline but is given no more then a slap on the wrist, yet we don’t see Neighsay challenge the fact she’s involved with the school. He demonstrates far more anger that they just included non-pony species into the school when those students themselves and even the older representatives that brought them there didn’t really do anything to harm Equestria. It’s this very type of hypocritical feeling that has come out in recent political firestorms.
I don’t want to get too further in this, as I’ve for the most part avoiding posting about politics on my modblog. I do not want to get into any political debates, that’s not what I use Tumblr for even though there are certainly a lot of blogs that ARE very heavy political wise on Tumblr. But that’s not why I chose to use Tumblr. I just want to have fun giving my thoughts on things I’m excited for and episodes of MLP, and making fun little sprite comics of stories I want to tell. This is a brief escape from the minefield that is today’s politics where there’s no winning no matter where you stand. I’m only mentioning this now, because it’s kind of an unavoidable subject after this episode. There’s just no sugarcoating it to the point we can deny it’s at least somewhat political.
Heading into Part 2, I did really like the scene of Twilight trying to be cheered up by her friends. It doesn’t exactly work, but it really shows how much Twilight cared about the school that not even her friends could do much to really help how down she feels that her school was closed. It’s an entertaining scene to me too. Can’t exactly pinpoint why. But it’s a good scene.
Small note, but I found it amusing Pinkie has a themed cannon for each of her friends. Even Starlight and Spike. I don’t even know why she does, but it’s funny.
A fun note to see that the throne room in Celestia’s castle (Or should we say Celestia and Luna’s) has changed to the look it has in the movie. Luna finally has her own throne again and everything. Kinda cool.
And what will undoubtedly be the meme of the episode, Silverstream’s fascination with Stairs. Although there are a few occasions that maybe Silverstream should of seen Stairs earlier. Like in the school or even earlier in the same castle they were hiding in. And I believe the Mane 6 go down a pretty huge amount of stairs to find the entrance to the sea pony kingdom. Though I think maybe the reason for that is for most of Silverstream’s life she was a sea pony. We don’t know how long the Storm King was threatening the places outside Equestria. It could very well be an entire decade. Long enough for Silverstream to mostly see things that were underwater rather then the stuff that is normal on the surface.
Speeding up a little, we know Twilight and the others find the students. And then stand up to Neighsay. (Though Maurice has already said this won’t be the last we see of him) And finally get the School put in the direction that it should be. Setting up the rest of the season with the new non-pony characters that I think at least a few will become new fan favorites. It’s a nice start to the season, some things certainly got political and that’s not going to be an easy conversation no matter what. But we got some neat new characters and the rest of the season to look forward to.
Next time is yet another Maud Pie episode. I’ll seeya then!

Has anyone been watching the EQG web series or the Fundamentals of Magic?
And if so, why haven’t we been talking about it? I mean, I know I need to catch up on them (especially Fundamentals of Magic, as it’s addressing one of my biggest issues with MLP as a fantasy series!), but I’ve seen absolutely zero discussion at all!
