Being With Yami Sukehiro
I love making these but it always takes so long. I don’t have another one in my queue but I do take requests! (You just might have to wait XD)
What it’s Like Being With Yami Sukehiro
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
“Sorry, you had to pick me up hot stuff. Finral ditched me,” Yami stumbled out of the bar. It wasn’t like the captain of the Black Bulls actually needed to be escorted home for safety reasons, but Finral gave the captain’s partner a heads up because a drunk Yami could do a lot of damage in one night. “Are you mad?”
He didn’t sound serious. He knew no one could be mad at his handsome face. But playfully ignoring him, the walk back to the base was actually quite romantic. A few fellow drunks were stumbling back home, but for the most part, it was quiet and peaceful, a far cry from how busy the streets usually were. Testing his limits, Yami moved his hand closer, brushing his fingers against theirs before tightening his grip. Hand holding usually wasn’t a Yami Sukehiro move, but they also felt warm and safe despite them being rough. “Dark magic gets a bad rep, you know.”
“I know.” His drunk musings were usually the same as these fancy nobles had flashy fire and mercury magics but failed to take what darkness could do seriously. Not that he was offended, he really wasn’t, but the attitude was annoying to put up with, especially at meetings.
“Maybe darkness, in general, gets a bad rep,” he stopped, looking up at the sky. “Without the dark, the moon wouldn’t look so beautiful,” it was beautiful, truly. Bright enough that it wasn’t hard to find the way home, and even though the warmth came from it being a summer night, it was hard not to think at least a little bit of it came from her glow. “Hey,” he turned to look at his partner, “come here,” he took their arm, pulling them against his chest so they could look at it together. “But it’s not nearly as beautiful as you,” he said softly.
Hearing something like that from a man like Yami was something that didn’t feel real, even to him. Quickly he realized what he said and started laughing, “God, don’t tell the squad I said something that sappy,” he let go and began to walk again, “not that anyone would believe you. The smile and wink he gave before facing forward were with the utmost confidence, but deep down, he wondered exactly what kind of comparison he was trying to make.

I know it's looking like Yuno and Langris are going to be fighting and defeating Zenon, but I have to say that seeing Finral and Langris fight him would definitely be cool.

Note
Idk why, but for some reason (literally just woke up) I dreamt this…
Do you ever have those types of dreams where you kinda have an epiphany but at the same time you wake up like “wait a second… since when do my dreams make sense?” That’s how I feel right now
Have you seen Disney/Pixar Brave? If it wasn’t mainly a mother/daughter movie, my dream, for some reason, pointed out quite a few aspects in the movie that could be used as good allegories for Finral/Langris’ relationship; especially now that they’re fighting Zenon together.
A few pages into 308… wait… ok I went back and counted to make sure, 5 pages into 308, when Yuno wakes up and sees Finral hanging on one of Zenon’s bone things and Langris is on the ground - it’s unclear if Finral is passed out - but Langris seems to be conscious seeing as his head is being held up off of the ground instead of it slumping towards the ground like it would if he were passed out (but I could be reading too much into the panel image)
If Langris isn’t passed out, imagine what thoughts are going through his head about how Finral came to his rescue/protection again even after everything.
There’s no denying Langris can be a self-absorbed and inconsiderate ass (he is doing better than he was since his initial introduction though); and Finral being the exact opposite does have to do with how they were treated in comparison while growing up. (I still have a theory Finral could’ve possibly been bastard-born, but that’s not part of this drabble… if you’re interested though, I’ll send that info/theory later). Regardless after everything, in his own way, Langris does love his brother - r/BlackClover did an excellent job of explaining it here. So getting back to what i was saying before, in the panel where Yuno sees Langris and Finral down for the count, it’s unclear if Finral is unconscious but Langris seems even less so because he seems to be holding his head up, even if only a little; so assuming Langris is conscious, he seems to be looking forward… at Zenon? or at Finral? Of course I think it’s the latter. He’s staring at Finral, why would his idiot brother still come even after everything!? Even in self denial that he wants to have a better relationship with Finral (and others in general) I can see part of Langris (inwardly) being like Merida in the end of Brave where it looked like the mom was permanently a bear and it looked like she had lost her mom for good; Merida said “You've always been there for me. You've never given up on me. I just want you back. I want you back mommy.” Of course Langris wouldn’t call Finral mommy. Are the circumstances the same? No. But I do think Langris would feel the same or at least a similar agony and feel/say something like that if Finral were to die protecting him. Finral wasn’t there in every way he should’ve been when they were growing up, and that’s not entirely his fault, he did still try to be there for Langris while trying to deal with his own issues/insecurities before eventually trying to run away from them… and by result in a way, running away from being Langris’ older brother. I don’t think Finral will die in this arc (I will personally come for Tabata sensei if Finral dies in this arc) but if even for a second Langris believed Finral to be dead, that Finral died coming to his aid, protecting him… I think that would destroy Langris whether he’s aware of it or not.
Overall the main quote/theme of Brave, to me, does work as a nice allegory for the development of Finral and Langris’ relationship from the flashbacks of their childhood, to Langris’ initial introduction, the royal knights tournament, elf arc, etc. etc. all the way up until now… that main theme quote (by the witch) being: “Fate be changed, look inside. Mend the bond torn by pride.” I think it fits them.
What are your thoughts?
Hmmm... 🤔 I do think that Langris is still awake, and I do think that seeing Finral in the state that he is in, will have a severe effect on him (Langris). Because it's been described that Langris is... envious (perhaps that's the right word for it) of Finral.
Finral is the kind, the helpful, the loved brother of them two, meanwhile Langris is the one with all the expectations and the pressure, which isn't really love. I explored this idea a bit in my "Sing a song" series, and I do think that Langris loves, and perhaps even admires, his brother to a great extent. So this will definitely (in my opinion, we shall see what Tabata thinks) be a tipping point for Langris. Possibly for Finral too. Because it's entirely possible that Finral comes to, and sees Langris doing something very out of control, and dangerous. And at that point, Finral of course needs to push even harder.
And I do think that this will be a remarkable point in their "fates" or their lives. "Fates" if we want to go for the words of the Witch Queen (I still am very much fixed on the idea of Witch Queen Vermillion.), which I don't mind. Also, I'm ... not saying that the quote wouldn't fit them, but I think that, that can work with a lot of canon. But that's a topic of its own.
I think that there is healing, and mending, for these two as well. Actually, I think that it'll be a big theme for Tabata in the near future, to talk about, and introduce, forgiveness. Finral and Langris have a... complicated relationship with a lot of emotions, and envy, and self-doubt, and ... there's a lot. But they're not close, and have been keeping to their own, for reasons of their own.
However, this will (in my opinion) change. I don't mean this as a kind of a "soon they're having tea parties and spending time regularly together", but I do think that they'll become close. They'll come to terms with each other, and they'll begin to heal as well.

you know in Black Clover Finral really is an incredibly interesting character because of the way his magic works, especially in comparison to the other members of his family. Finral's family is renowned for their use of spatial magic in combat, with his brother Langris as their little combat prodigy, but Finral doesn't fit in that role. his magic is much more simple, and much more useless for direct combat: all it does is create portals to places Finral has been. It doesn't make any sense at first glance: how could someone with such weak spatial magic come from a family whos specialty is combat using spatial magic? but when you consider finral's personality and the way he uses his magic, everything starts to make a lot more sense.
right out the gate, in the first fight he gets caught in, we're shown that finral is a coward. when he transports Gauche to where Yami and Patry are fighting, his first instinct is to just run away, and this instinct is amplified when the third eye show up. and later on, in the underwater temple, while everyone else is running around picking fights with the mages so that they can get out as fast as possible, Finral is shown just hiding and avoiding combat at all cost. and yet, when Asta starts to fight Vetto, he steels himself and joins in the fight. its in this fight that we see where finral strength lies: not in fighting himself - he's much too weak for that - but in supporting his allies. and a little after this, we're shown the other part of his personality that affects his magic: Finral's kindness. when Langris is insulting and belittling Asta and the other black bulls, finral, for what seems to be the first time, stands up to his brother for the sake of helping his friends. and its from this point onwards that we can see how this affects the way Finral's magic grows. the next spell finral learns how to use is Fallen Angel's Wingbeat, which does nothing more than moving his opponent somewhere else. the first time he uses this spell is against Langris, who, during this fight at least, had the clear intent of hurting Finral beyond the help of any healing magic, if not just killing him outright. and yet, despite being up against this person who hated him and pushed him away and treated him like he was nothing, Finral still can't bring himself to hurt his brother. through flashbacks, we're shown that through their entire childhood, Finral kept trying to reach out to and befriend Langris, despite the way Langris treated him. Finral even says it himself when fighting Langris: he doesnt want to hurt his brother, he just wants to save Langris from what he's going to become. this kindness goes even further than that, because after Langris is taken over by Latry, Finral says he felt guilty and partially responsible for the way Langris ended up, because even though Finral knew Langris was lonely, he left Langris behind. thats why instead of letting jack and yami take down latry by force and potentially let them hurt Langris, Finral instead takes latry out himself, and reaches his hand out to Langris one final time - and Langris finally accepts.
idk man I think abt this stuff a lot and this probably doesnt make any sense but I need to write it down so I dont forget. anyway the point is that Finral, despite everything his family put him through, remained so kind and gentle, and instead of it blowing up in his face and ending up with Finral being labeled as the naive character, it pays off with Finral and Langris finally reaching an understanding, and with the two having the type of relationship Finral tried so hard to have with his brother for so long. I just think thats great.

☕️ Steph, my good clown, can I get your sexy opinion on your favorite battles in the shonen series (plural) that you have read/watched?
The clown has arrived with her answer! Thank you for such an interesting topic! It was hard picking out my top 3 favorites since a lot of my favorites are great in their own right, but I think I’m satisfied with what I chose.
For anyone who’s interested, here are my other favorite shounen battles that sadly did not make it to the top 3:
Itadori and Nobara vs. Curse brothers (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Maki vs. Mai (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Gon vs. Pitou (Hunter x Hunter)
Deku vs. Muscular (Boku no Hero Academia)
All Might vs. All for One (Boku no Hero Academia)
Luffy vs. Usopp (One Piece)
Gaara vs. Rock Lee (Naruto)
Zenitsu vs. Spider Brother (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Tanjirou vs. Rui (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Now let’s get to my top 3 favorite shounen battles! (Under the cut!)
3. Maki vs. Miwa (Jujutsu Kaisen)
For my third favorite shounen battle, I chose the fight between Maki and Miwa during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc! What I like most about this fight was the set up, spectacular choreography, and interesting characterization.
Before jumping into the fight, we are introduced to Miwa and Mai talking about Maki’s strength as a Jujutsu sorcerer. Here, Mai is downplaying Maki’s ability to fight which leads Miwa to underestimate Maki as a result. We then cut to Miwa being absolutely overwhelmed by Maki’s attacks. This short setup helped give impact to Maki’s true strength and abilities to not only Miwa, but the audience as well. The fake out was a nice surprise since we haven’t seen Maki fight thus far.
Tumblr media
The choreography throughout the entire fight was absolutely marvelous. The use of perspective and slow-motion helped give certain attacks more weight as well as how the attacks look in a first-person perspective. We not only see how overwhelmed Miwa was, but also how focused and ruthless Maki can be. Despite Miwa being an antagonist due to her team’s order to kill Itadori, I find it amusing that we the audience end up sympathizing with Miwa in the end.
Tumblr media
I also liked how the environment was used during the fight. The transition from the forest to the small stream down below when Maki literally kicked Miwa off a cliff was a nice change of scenery. The visuals of the water due to the character’s movement and weight was also a nice detail. I won’t be surprised if all the budget went into the water effects.
Tumblr media
The fight between Maki and Miwa was incredibly one-sided where Maki seemed to have the upper hand for most of the fight and Miwa had no choice but to be on the defense. We can see how overwhelmed Miwa was due to underestimating Maki from the beginning. If Miwa was warned ahead of time, she may have had a better chance of standing against Maki. However, due to her trust over her teammate’s words, she ended up being blind-sighted. I really enjoyed being inside Miwa’s head for the majority of the fight. We can tell that Miwa is doing the best of her abilities, but just can’t beat Maki’s talent and quick instinct. The fight overall highlight’s Miwa’s weakness of overthinking her next move. We only heard Maki’s thinking process briefly after Miwa activated her simple domain, but she’s very quick to adapt and be unpredictable. The characterization in this small fight was very fun to watch!
Tumblr media
Overall, this may be a small-scale fight in comparison to other major ones within the anime and manga, but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. Having a grand spectacle of a fight doesn’t make it the “best fight”. Sometimes, a short, but well-choreographed fight that makes good use of the environment can go a long way for me.
2. The Black Bulls vs. Vetto (Black Clover)
For my second favorite battle in shounen, I chose the black bulls vs. Vetto during the Water Temple arc. I’m not sure if it’s because I don’t watch enough shounen anime, but I felt like this was the first battle where a group of characters worked together to defeat an antagonist. I’m just so used to watching 1v1s, or if we’re really stretching it 2v1s, in shounen that seeing an actual group use teamwork was very refreshing for me to watch. Something to note about the difference in the manga and anime was that while the final battle against Vetto within the anime had Gauche, Charmy, and Grey join in, in the manga it was mainly Asta, Finral, and Vanessa. Despite the small difference, the fact that most of the members of the Black Bulls took a chance to fight Vetto and showcased their fighting abilities was a sight to see.
Before we get to the final fight against Vetto, if we don’t count Yami’s finishing blow at the very end, I really enjoyed Luck, Magna, and most especially Noelle’s attack. I liked how we got to see each character use their strongest attack and the unpredictability of who’s going to finish Vetto off throughout the fight. I was hype seeing Luck and Magna’s combo magic for the first time, but was surprised to see how ineffective it was to Vetto. This helped give us an idea of the power difference a normal magic knight may have in opposition to an eye of the midnight sun, which is why when Noelle gained an attack spell, Sea Dragon’s Roar, and did the most damage to Vetto, that basically hinted the potential Noelle has as a strong magic knight. But surprisingly, Noelle’s attack wasn’t the climax of the fight because that’s when Asta, Finral, and Vanessa joined in and worked together against Vetto. Now it was this specific teamwork that really made it for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I love most about this team dynamic was how each of them had a significant role in winning the fight. Asta had the physical strength and most offensive attacks, Vanessa’s string magic helped propel Asta into any direction, and Finral’s spatial magic was utilized to transport Asta in any location. Both Vanessa and Finral helped give Asta the upper hand by making his attacks more unpredictable and adaptive to Vetto’s animalistic magic. It was impressive seeing Asta attack Vetto in different directions and dodging his attacks. But just when we thought they had a chance of defeating Vetto, he became a much bigger threat when he began to read through their attacks and successfully caught and broke Asta’s arms. And just when we think that Asta can’t fight without his arms, Asta reinforces his schtick of not giving up, igniting hope into his teammates. And with their final push and hint towards Asta’s devil powers, Vetto was finally defeated thanks to their determination and teamwork!
Tumblr media
This fight had a nice combination of surprise, hope, and despair! But what makes this my second favorite fight was solely because of how each of the members had a moment to shine within the fight. There wasn’t an instance where a character was just watching and that makes me very happy! An overall great fight in Black Clover!
Tumblr media
1. Gon vs. Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txl2imn11bM&ab_channel=CrunchyrollCollection
For my ultimate favorite shounen battle, I chose Gon vs Hisoka from the Heavens Arena arc. If there’s one word to describe this fight, it would be “tension”. What I liked most about the beginning of this fight was how no word of dialogue was exchanged between the characters. The background music was ambient with most of the attention given to the sound of movement and grunts, which only makes you feel tense throughout the exchange.
In this particular fight, Gon was very quick and light on his feet while fighting Hisoka. There were even moments where it looked like he was levitating for a few seconds when throwing punches at Hisoka which shows how fast his attacks were. I liked how we see Gon’s thought process through his actions where he’d try multiple strategies to attack Hisoka. At first, he would try and do a barrage of punches towards Hisoka’s face, but then gain some distance when his attacks fail and then face Hisoka head on again. And while Gon is struggling to get the first hit, Hisoka is just observing Gon with a smile on his face and enjoying every bit of it. And it wasn’t until Hisoka surprised Gon with a punch that we finally took a breather. It was an intense fight right off the bat!
But my enjoyment of the fight doesn’t stop there. During the first exchanges within the fight, Gon’s attempts were very straightforward and relied mostly on his strength. But during their second exchange, we can see that Gon learned from his prior attempt and decided to use his wits. Instead of attacking Hisoka head first, he cleverly used his environment to gain the upper hand and finally punched Hisoka in the face! Hisoka may have underestimated Gon from the beginning, but I still thought it was amazing how Gon managed to pull that off! I’m going to be honest, I was not expecting Gon to actually be strategic and pull out the tiles off the floor to block Hisoka’s sight. It was so satisfying to see this type of development from him which makes it a highlight of this fight.
Honestly, this was this part of the fight that makes this my ultimate favorite, but that doesn’t mean what happens afterwards was nothing interesting. Hisoka’s nen abilities were very fun to watch and very unpredictable! I feel like Gon was meant to lose from the start since Hisoka’s fighting style is very adaptive against Gon’s more simple approach. Overall, an amazing fight! I highly recommend watching the fight for yourself!

I think there's just this underlying sadness with Finral that while everyone else is arguably much better off for joining the Black Bulls, for a while Finral was kinda stuck in the same position as he was before leaving his family.
Like thanks to the Black Bulls Vanessa is finally able to live her life freely, Noelle can better hone her magic skills without Nozel shunning her at every turn, Henry gained a newfound will to live since crossing paths with Yami.
But Finral... he left his whole life behind because the pressure of living up to his younger brother, a literal child prodigy, was just too much. The constant comparisons to his brother made him deeply insecure about his magic abilities. And when he joins the Black Bulls... he's still just seen as kind of useless in battle. He gets his ass handed to him on multiple occasions, and everyone his squad seems to view him as nothing more than a glorified carpool.
I felt kinda upset for him when he and Yami found Langris possessed by a powerful elf, and Yami's immediate response was the tell Finral to stay back and let him handle it. Especially with how much he clearly tried to show his capabilities in front of Yami early on.
God damn it Yuki for making me feels things towards funny pervert man.

Plus for pairings, only if you don't mind, pick one of these pairs: Yami/Charlotte, or Asta/Noelle, or Finral/Finesse, or Gauche/Grey, or Charmy/Rill... yeah, the canon-friendly ones, I'm just curious x)
Okay see, there’s really only one of these that I’m invested in—Charmy/Rill. And even then I’m...not really a super hard shipper, but let me explain my thoughts.
So for pretty much the rest of the list they either have basically no shown two-sided chemistry (Yami/Charlotte and Asta/Noelle) because we never see the guys in those pairings feeling anything remotely similar to what the girls do in terms of romantic interest; or, they have set up and maybe two-sided chemistry, but I haven’t seen enough of it to really feel it (Finral/Finesse, Gauche/Grey).
For me, a good ship should have good dynamics and good potential. Granted, each of the above ships have both of those (mostly), but at the same time when it comes to canon ships I always stand on the fence of “if it’s textual I want to see reciprocation.” Like...crackships are fun bc there’s basically no prior interaction, so who knows if they have a mutual crush? Who says I can’t make them like each other? But ships that have canon textual stuff are harder for me bc if I look at their canon dynamic and go “...but there is literally no chemistry. No mutual interest” then it kills my interest in that ship. The step to a relationship between characters that have that sort of canon evidence should feel like a natural progression of mutual care and respect, not like you have to flanderize one of the characters to make it work.
Now, to clarify, Rill/Charmy falls into a bit of a gray area for me in regards to this. Rill and Charmy haven’t really had enough interaction that I’ve seen for me to tell whether it may be mutual or not. So it stands in this weird gray area because Rill has a massive crush (but doesn’t know it’s Charmy)—and Charmy isn’t really aware of Rill in her social circle at all. So there’s textual interest, but we haven’t seen if Charmy would develop interest in Rill or not, and so on.
So for me, it feels like a canon friendly crackship. Fun, lighthearted, plenty of potential and good dynamics, two people who can meet each other on a similar level—but nothing from canon that puts me off the ship the same way I’ve ended up being put off of Charlotte/Yami or Asta/Noelle.
What separates Charmy/Rill from Gauche/Grey and Finral/Finesse for me aside from the fact I just....haven’t seen enough of them yet (since they sit on a similar level in the text rn), is that honestly I just really like their potential dynamic. Two fun characters who can mutually support each other and have fun doing it is just—good food for the soul. Especially since they balance each other out a bit more—Charmy would have someone outside of her chosen family of the Black Bulls that she could play off of (sort of similar to how Luck and Magna are, but less violent), and Rill would have the same! It’s an extension of their characters that work, to me.
And honestly that comparison to Magna/Luck is probably the best explanation I have as to why I deeply like this ship so much, beyond the above explanation; Charmy/Rill has a very similar energy, but their ride-or-die potential is much less “I will fistfight God, bitch!!! :D” and more “Hey, hold my beer!”
Both are chaotic, but the chaotic energy has a different flavor, you know?

Still don't know what to do next in the crossover fic.
So, I’m on the day before they set sail. Got Yami and Vangeance off training with new grimoires, because in this fic becoming the Tree of Q gave them a shared mental state and when they split back into two people, their magic affinities kind of became complementary mixes of their two magic together. So, I know it’d be good to catch back up to them at some point to illustrate how their new affinities are, but I got to bridge to that a bit more.
I last left off with a scene between Finral and Langris that evolved into them stopping by to see Finesse and Finral taking off immediately because of their agreement but Langris staying, because it seemed logical both of them would go see her before taking off for a few weeks on a diplomatic mission especially since they just got out of healing after Spade. Now I got to figure out some stuff to do between that point and catching up with where Yami and Vangeance’s training took them.
So I’ve got some options but nothing’s really sticking with me. Like I know I need something with Boruto at some point. I also would like to do something with Liebe. I already took Boruto into the marketplace earlier in the fic when Magna and Zora went after dashi ingredients for Yami and took Boruto with them.
I could do something with Asta, Yuno, Noelle, Mimosa, and Liebe, but what? They are all going to the Land of Fire so they’ve got to prepare for that.
Earlier I tried what would happen if Boruto showed off some ninjutsu by rising to Luck’s challenge, but that made things too complicated and I want to keep this simple. Also I’m not sure if Luck would identify Boruto as someone worthy of fighting since Luck probably doesn’t know what a ninja is let alone that Boruto represents a ninja out of ninja school since Boruto is like three years younger than people are when they get their grimoires. I dunno. It got complicated because I realized that being exposed to the mana healing properties of the beach, the food, water, etc...of Clover Kingdom, and so forth, Boruto, like Yami, could develop the ability to use mana, and again, that complicates things.
Like obviously Boruto’s affinity would be lightning because he’s already got an affinity for that in terms of jutsu. But then that begs the question would mana dirupt chakra? Would it work with chakra? Chakra might just be a body’s personal mana and what the mages do is integrate their personal mana with the natural mana around them. Like would Boruto only be able to use lightning magic on one side of his body and then the other side could do jutsu? Then you’ve got that karma factors in there and again, too complicated, though it would be interesting to delve into if this was going to be a much longer and involved fic.
I haven’t done much with Gauche, Gordon, or Grey in comparison to other chaacters not going to the Land of Fire. I could also pull Letoile, David, Klaus, or Alecdora into things. Sylph’s also been weirdly absent so far, but I’d think that’s a function of the mana healing process and curse cleansing everyone had to go through at the beach post-Spade as it is the narrative just hasn’t called for her yet.
Julius, who only understand that jutsu is some type of foreign non-grimoire style magic could also crop up before they set sail but idk. Seems like they have to be extra careful with him because of some manga spoilers.
Anyway, lots to consider. I just need to like figure out the flow of things.
Part of the problem here is I also got my first dose of vaccine a few days ago so it might just be I’m still too tired for writing yet. We’ll see how it goes.

Who are your top ten favorite black clover characters and ships? Talk about them.
YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR A LONG TIME AND I’M READY TO DELIVER 1/2 OF YOUR REQUEST! I’ll post my top ten ships on your other ask~! <3
Sorry for the long text! I kind of went overboard with my explanations!
My Top 10 Favorite Black Clover Characters!
1 Asta
Before I got into Black Clover, I always heard a lot of negative comments about Asta as a character. “He’s too loud” “He’s extremely annoying” “He’s just a generic character”. After hearing so many of these types of comments, I was curious to see if what people said about him was true. And now that I’m up to date with the manga and seen every episode of the anime (except the recent filler episodes), I can confidently say, “WHO THE HELL WERE THESE GUYS REFERRING TO AGAIN???”. Like… hello?? I don’t know if maybe I’m just not that critical as a person, but I found Asta’s character to be quite endearing! People hated his voice but I thought it was pretty fine! It may be because I watched the dub, but even his Japanese voice isn’t that bad. Asta is just seems like an overall solid character to me! He’s not generic because he has a lot of quirks that makes him unique. One thing I noticed about his character was how family-oriented he was. You can tell by how he played around with other kids or comforted them that he has a lot of experience with kids! It’s honestly adorable how great he is with kids! And even though he grew up in an orphanage, he was able to find happiness as a peasant. I liked how he dreamt big even though he was starting from the very bottom. He didn’t have magic at all but he still had the determination to fight against all odds and strive to be Wizard King. Do you know how inspirational that is? And he’s not just doing it for himself,  he’s doing for his family back at the orphanage! He said it himself, as Wizard King he’ll fix up the church and spread the message that it doesn’t matter if you’re a peasant or orphan, anybody can be Wizard King. Asta truly has a heart of gold because his goal isn’t just full of self-interest. I also like how he wants people to be held accountable for their actions. Asta is a very fair person and isn’t one to automatically kill the opponent to save the day. No, Asta wants these bad people to serve their time and make up for what they’ve done. Like??? Wow, Asta, you have a lot of mercy for a shounen protagonist. I think that’s what I love about Asta’s character. He represents hope for other people. And I’m a sucker for characters who fight for what’s right and not because of some heroic prophecy or selfishness.
This is where I list out random things I like about Asta’s character: Asta’s crush on Sister Lily is hilarious because it truly represents ‘fighting against the odds’ in a comedic way. Asta’s short stature is so cute, I hope he remains short for the rest of his life and grows to be proud of it. I really love Asta’s character design. He’s short, his ash blond messy hair is cute and unique, his sharp green eyes are beautiful, his shoes are two different shoes sewn together, and his fashion sense is simple yet nice to look at!  A very distinct design! And his anti-magic and demon possession is a cool addition to his character! I’d gush more about him but I think this is already too much lmao.
2. Fuegoleon Vermillion
I’m going to push aside my thirst for this man and actually talk seriously about what I love about his character. I’m going to first talk about his character design. I really love how Tabata designed Fuegoleon. For one, I really love how he’s wearing eye makeup. I think it’s a unique family tradition for each of the kids to wear this distinct eye makeup no matter the gender. His eye makeup and burned symbol on his forehead really made him distinct from other characters! It’s subtle but visually pleasing! And ‘subtlety’ is a good word to summarize Fuegoleon despite how ironic that word is. When we look at Fuegoleon’s hair in comparison to his other siblings, his smooth hair tells us he’s more orderly and responsible but his curly bangs tells us that he isn’t completely cool-headed. His red eye makeup could also tell us that he has a fierce side to him, as if his eyes are glowing red with fire. And comparing his face with Nozel’s (both are around the same age), Fuegoleon looks older with his eye wrinkles, telling us that he’s more of an old soul and matured fast for his age. That and he probably overworked himself with a lot of responsibilities. His color scheme is also very attractive! He has a balance of warm and cool colors which makes him look… balance!
Now as a character, I really love the trope he represents! He’s the mentor figure for Leopold, Asta, and Noelle! For a character who isn’t part of the main cast, I find it impressive how impactful his words of wisdom was to the major leads. But it makes so much sense after all the things we’ve learned about Fuegoleon as a character! Fuegoleon has a lot of strengths as a character that I couldn’t help but fall for. Firstly, his debut of a character was short but memorable for me. During the Magic Knights exam, he was the only captain who passionately yelled about the rules of the next test. That was such a character defining moment because those few seconds perfectly described how intense and serious he is. He could’ve calmly announced the next test but the fire within him told him to jump up and yell those words with all his heart. The next time we saw him, we finally got to know him a lot better as a character and man did he win a lot of respect from me. Despite being a royal, he stood up for Asta when no noble did. He was the first noble to treat Asta fairly right away. In comparison to other nobles we’ve come across, Fuegoleon was a breath of fresh air! He wasn’t discriminating or condescending, which made him a lot more likable! I liked how he came from a privileged background but his sense of justice was still a 5/5. You just can’t hate this guy! His visuals are not only attractive but also his personality! He charmed me even more when he was the first to act and became a temporary leader for the other captains! His leadership, inspirational words, and fairness makes him an overall respectable character! I found him even more endearing when we saw his socially awkward personality. Serious + awkward are perfect combinations for a cute character. I also find his fire magic, salamander, and fire arm to be cool as well! He’s just a great character to me!
3. Finral Roulacase
Okay I’m going to try and not write too much like I did with Asta and Fuegoleon lmao. I need to chill-. Finral is the type of underdog character I always loved in anime. The character people don’t think much of at first but then they undergo a lot of character development! I liked how we saw subtle changes within Finral throughout the series and the resolve he gained as an older brother to Langris. His character arc was overall satisfying to me, especially during his final clash against Langris! Finral just has that good amount of light-hearted times (mixers, casanova wannabe personality, cowardly moments) and family drama! I would never expect a lot of depth in Finral based on his character trope but here we are. Finral is such a likeable guy. I just can’t hate him. I also like how he isn’t a perverted character. He just wants LOVE. Also his spacial magic? I love how unique it is! He’s a walking taxi but the fact that he developed a new magic spell to use it during combat is amazing! I also love how kindness is a big part of his character! A very peaceful libra~! I think what made him above Noelle was that I found his character to be charming ever since the very beginning! That and the fact that he can be considered the ‘underdog’ of the Black Bulls!
4.Noelle Silva
Oh Noelle! You beautiful and frustrating character! I’ll be honest, I had mixed feelings about Noelle when I first got into Black Clover. I was never a fan of overly exaggerated tsundere characters and so I would get frustrated with her tendency to act this certain way in the beginning. It was the true definition of slow burn but it’s through this gradual liking toward Noelle that made me feel strong and positive emotions towards her today. Slowly but surely, Noelle began finding her worth as a person and magic knight. All her life, Noelle was put down by those she called family and other noblemen for her lack of control over her magic. And it’s through this understanding of her backstory where I truly get why she wears that tsundere mask with other people. She can’t take a compliment normally because not only had she never been complimented before, but she grew up in an environment that taught her how she should act as a royal. She was bound to be unlikable at first, but it’s through a lot of character development and understanding where I found my love for Noelle. Noelle to me is how most shounen female leads should be. She has a crush on Asta but that’s not her entire character. She has internal struggles outside of her love interest and went through so much development that she became one of the most powerful young magic users in the series. Like the power ups she went through?? HOLY SHIT. The fact that she made me forgive her tsundere tendencies shows how great her character was.
5. Magna Swing
Man, I’m also a sucker for characters like Magna! I just love the delinquent with the heart of gold! Magna appears like your everyday punk but he really is such a good guy! It’s fun to see characters that subverts expectations and Magna is no exception! It’s small actions from this guy that makes him so likable! I really love how aggressive and uninviting Magna was in testing Asta only to heart warmingly accept Asta into the squad once he passed! He does this again when he makes fun of Asta for having a very small room but then tells Asta to send letters back home so that his loved ones aren’t worried! LIKE HELLO?? Why are you so lovingly contradicting?! Magna really tries to uphold his tough guy image but does sweet things right afterwards!! Magna’s character said never judge a book by its cover! I also find his loyalty toward Yami to be so sweet! He’s willing to gamble his clothes for this man and I call that DEDICATION. Magna is that ride or die friend that I’d love to have in real life. His interactions with other characters are also hilarious and his presence always brings a smile to my face!
I know I keep talking about character design but I can’t help it since Tabata’s character design is GREAT! Magna’s design… I LOVE IT!! He has the cliche leather jacket and skull motifs to bring his delinquent look together! And Tabata had to give him blue shades!! The perfect accessory to complete the look! I also love his hair style and color! Magna is this close to having a pompadour but stuck with a Mohawk look instead! I also like how his hair has two different colors! It tells me right away that people dye their hair in this world! Interesting information for subtle world building! Light gray and black is such an nice color combination, too! I like how he becomes more of a pretty boy when his hair is down! It’s a nice surprise~! And his most iconic character trait. HIS SMILE! I love anime characters with toothy smiles! We can literally count how many teeth they have- LDKAFJSA. Reminds me a lot of Totoro!
I  JUST LOVE HIM SO MUCH.
6. Klaus Lunettes
Klaus… Santa Klaus… I think I may have a type because in my top three characters I’d date, he and Fuegoleon are up there together! Both are serious and high strung characters with a dorky side to them. These two truly captured my heart-! Klaus is overall a great character! Klaus is the straitlaced character who wants to be respected by others. Sadly nobody gives him that respect and I find that hilarious! I love how short-tempered he is despite how cool and collected he wants to appear to others! Everything about him is contradicting! His hairstyle and earrings are punk rock but his glasses clash with it. He seems disciplined and mature, but is the first to crack and get overworked by emotions. Klaus acts stern, but can be very protective and nurturing. His character did a literal 180 after Asta and Yuno saved them all from Mars. And when he gets worried over Asta and it always warms my heart!! Klaus is lowkey a tsundere but is actually subtle about it- wow! He’s so… comically dedicated. He doesn’t half-ass anything! Overall, he’s a solid character to me! I hope to see more from this nerd!
I’m just going to list out other things I liked about Klaus: I love how his character quirk is him readjusting his glasses. Like get some new glasses if they don’t fit you nerd. I bet he does it to look cool or something. Smh. I also love his outbursts! I mentioned that he reacts quickly and emotionally and I find these traits to be very charming! I like how he doesn’t make his worries towards Asta obvious. We only know this side of him through other characters! That’s so cute~!
7.Julius Novachrono
I deadass thought this man was shady af. I'll have to blame OP 3 and Tabata for clowning me like that but despite the initial suspicion, I really enjoyed his character! I really love how dorky and childish he is! I can never get tired of his fanboy moments in the anime! He's literally the strongest mage in the series but still gets excited over rare or unique magic! I also love how humble he is! He doesn't let his title give him a big head. Despite this quirky side to Julius, I liked how realistic and competent he is as well. He isn’t one to give hopeful answers to other characters. When he said in order to be Wizard King you must have merits, I respected his honesty. Having good morals isn’t all you need to be Wizard King and Julius made that very clear. When he killed off a few members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, that’s when his character became more real to me. Julius has the experience needed to be a well respected Wizard King and his support towards Yuno and Asta made me like him more! Julius just has a lot of depth and I really appreciate that in a character! I found the path Tabata put Julius in to be very interesting to me! I’m actually glad he’s still alive but as a kid! The series isn’t ready to lose their Wizard King yet and there’s still a lot from Julius I’d love to see in the future! Julius truly brings a lot of humor and epic moments in Black Clover which is why he’s in my top 10 favorite characters!
I also love his character design! I think the short and blonde hairstyle with the royal king aesthetic is pleasing to the eye! He could’ve been a total snob like King Augustus but he strayed away from that trope! His name is similar to Julius Caesar in which represents his leadership and powerful authority as Wizard King, but subverts negative traits associated with Julius Caesar! Clever Tabata~!
8. Vanessa Enoteca
I’m going to have to shout out Vanessa’s arc for making her character be in my top 10. Like if it weren’t for the witches’ forest arc, she wouldn’t have made it in my top 10. I thought Vanessa’s character was a given for a shounen series where we have at least one sexy female character for fanservice, but I’m pleasantly surprised at how deep her character was! Who would have known that there was an actual reason for her to have a revealing design! I think it’s fine to have a character who wears revealing clothes for the heck of it, but I feel like Tabata went the extra mile to be pretty thoughtful about it. For one, she was always caged in (literally and figuratively) ever since she was a child. This backstory indirectly tells us why she wears such revealing clothing. That’s because it symbolizes her freedom as her own person. She went from the modest dress she wore when she was caged in to a sexy dress! I really understand this mentality!!
As a character, I found her lack of freedom to be very relatable. I also felt sympathetic towards her character when she didn’t receive healthy motherly love. I felt a lot of emotions for Vanessa and that made me appreciate her character more! I feel like her character started to leave a positive impression on me when she acknowledged Asta’s strength and determination as well as her helping Noelle as a proper older sister figure! Her arc solidified herself into my top ten when she gained the powers of red thread of fate because of her love for the Black Bulls. That power up shows how much she values the Black Bulls and it always makes me feel soft just thinking about it! Her magic ability is also pretty cool. Thread magic? There’s a lot you can do with that magic! I like how she had a prominent role of maneuvering Asta during the Veto fight, too. Vanessa is another female character with an incredibly strong magic power. It became so useful in so many moments in the series!
Other comments I’d like to say about why I like Vanessa is her sexy witch aesthetic. I think she looks very pretty and her color scheme is beautiful!
9, Charmy Pappitson
OH GEMINI QUEEN. I love you so. What I like about Charmy was how many times she surprised me. When I first saw her, she looked like she’s a kid but she’s actually 19 years old. What? Then when I saw that she was the glutton, I thought she’d be selfish with her food but then she shares it with others. Huh? Then I assumed she was a harmless character but then she knocked out that witch when she mistaken her for stealing her food with her sheep magic. Oh? And just when I thought I saw everything I needed to know about Charmy, it’s revealed that she was a dwarf and has food magic. HELLO? Like what else am I going to learn about Charmy?! She’s such an unpredictable character and that’s what makes her so fun to watch! The thing is, she still remains the same after all these reveals! She doesn’t really go through a lot of character development but these surprises make up for it! Charmy is overall a feel good character. She’s not one to be taken seriously all the time and that’s okay! She’s just there to have a good time! She radiates good vibes and I like how light-hearted Charmy is! She’s also pretty badass, too, so great combination!
10. Gordon Agrippa
And finally we have Gordon. Gordon. is. such. a. good. boy! There’s no bad bone in this man! He’s so dedicated and loyal to his friends! And it makes me feel bad that he doesn’t get the love he deserves in the canon story! Everything about him is so pure and soft! I love how he’s very quiet and mumbles a lot but the words he says are very sweet! I’d love to listen to his friendship speeches all day! Gordon is the type of guy I’d definitely want as a best friend. His quiet voice and my deaf ears aren’t a great combination but I don’t care! Gordon’s personality is perfect to me! I really hope we get to see more from him in the future!
In terms of character design, I absolutely love it! His goth aesthetic contrasts so much with his actual personality. I love the Marilyn Manson inspiration behind Gordon’s design. His character design is so distinct from other characters which makes him stick out like a sore thumb. This is random but I love how thick his lips are. The black lipstick and eye shadow also looks great on him! His nose is also cutely big!
Gordon is one of the best boi. No question!
