if i can be corny for a second i wanna talk about the greatest strengths of the 2003 tmnt series and why it speaks to me (esp as a queer person)
so i might have alluded to this before, but let me say it outright: each show is definitely a product of its time, and the ideals of whatever generation its from. whether talking about the humour, the story, the dialogue etc, its always important to remember that these shows will always come off in a way due to the generation theyre from. and thats not a bad thing! it just means its important to think about them from that perspective.
2003 is a show of my generation growing up, and a thing about that era that maybe some people younger than me wont understand is there is so much more language commonly available to describe yourself now than there was then. you can take this in any context; mental health, sexuality, gender identity, or even just the ability to describe your relationships with more (idk if this will be the right word) therapist language.
in 03 we have a family unit of splinter and his sons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. we have a splinter who hasnt opened up to his sons about the trauma hes experienced, but not in a way of shutting them out, simply because it isnt their responsibility to know as they are teenagers. he tells them of the mutagen that created them, but not of his past with his master yoshi, who he calls father when by himself, but never around his sons which is just an interesting concept to think about.
(i do not intent this next sentence as ragging on the two shows after this when i say it, simply from a character standpoint) this is the splinter who completely doesnt make his problems his sons problems, but he also is very willing to tell them the truth when he knows they're ready. this is is the most idyllic version of splitner out of all of them, even when comparing to his mirage counterpart (who hes the most based on) due to that splinter raising them to be ninja specifically to make them fight shredder. this one is just their father who loves them and wants to keep them safe the best way he can, and he was never a human in the first place to even know how to be that. so this whole family dynamic starts with him, and the way he raised his sons reflects his parenting.
so, the setting and year this show is made is 2003. something very relatable here is how there isnt a lot of language for the personality quirks of the turtles. there's so much evidence here for mikey having adhd, his brothers will say things like "why doesnt mikey have to help?" and the answer is "well, he'd be bored. and whats worse, mikey not helping or mikey being bored?" its this beautiful moment of, "hey, we know its not fair, but thats how mikey is, and its better for everyone if we just respect that thats how he is" mikey cant keep his hands off stuff, they know this they dont yell at him for behaving that way, they just stop him. this coding feels the most specific, but like i said. its 2003. we dont have the words to describe what this is yet, and if we do its not common knowledge.
another example is in the classic episode where raphael meets casey jones. raphael is sparring with mikey, and he lashes out and nearly kills mikey. everyone reacts to this by getting him to stop, and no one is more upset than raphael himself. they all tell him to go get some air, which he does. theres no moment of any of them screaming at him for losing his temper, its very clear that they all know he's going to do that himself. and he does go get some air. they all know thats what he needs. he goes and meets casey jones, another hot head, and raph has to help coach this hot head on his anger. when he comes back at the end of the episode after having let out that aggression, he apologizes and no one is upset with him. there's a very clear understanding among his family that he cannot help it, but the best thing they can do is give him his space when he needs it. watching this from a 2023 perspective (20 years later) im sure we could analyze this as a few things going on with raph, my mind comes to autism but at the end of the day it doesnt matter why he behaves like this, the point is that he does and the best thing his family does is just...help him. which they do. and they never hold it against him.
when leo is going through his ptsd arc hes at his closest to raph as a character, the show draws a lot of parallels (like having him go let out some aggression with casey) and we get to see the dynamic in reverse. in "i, monster" (the rat king episode) leo is losing it, taking on rat king alone and not wanting to let up. raphael is actively holding his brothers back when they say "we shouldnt leave him to fight alone", raphael says "if leo gets in trouble i'm the first one in there, but right now it looks like leo's got more than one monster to work out of his system" raph doesn't exactly know what leos going through, but he recognizes it. he knows he needs to fight alone, so raph lets him. its only when the building collapses and leo is no longer in a safe position that he says "leo lets go", which leo wordlessly agrees with and actually listens.
this is what i think is the best part of these guys, the unconditional understanding they have for the way they are. we still have our "raphs a big hot head" "mikeys annoying" jokes, but they feel like genuine good natured sibling ribbing because they know each other on that level.
and to go back to the fact that this show is set in 2003, there's something so specific about the way mikey constantly makes references to liking women's clothing, to being fine with feminine language, and to being open about being the pretty turtle who "has that effect on minds of men" speaks to me as a queer person. this could easily be intended as homophobic jokes and probably is, because again.... its the mid 2000s, thats very much what media was like, thats what the jokes were. especially with the girly screams mikey does being one of the first jokes of this nature.
but theres something that happens in season 4, where an alien is attacking mikey, and donnie rushes in and says "hey, thats my sibling" that sticks out. and it happens again in fast forward. when talking to the dark turtles leo says "you and your brothers" "me and my siblings"
because of the way this family unit just understands each other without ever having a conversation about things, it feels like its not a joke. theres some kind of affirmation happening here. even if it seems like i could be reading into it too much, its specific! and it keeps happening!
and by the end of the show, when mikey says he wants to be maid of honour, even if that line in the media itself was intended to be a joke, no one in their family treats it like one. of course mikey is the maid of honour, he asked to be one! the only real offence taken is when april says bride's maid, to which he is offended because hes so much more important than that!
so from a story standpoint, this show doesnt have the intricate complexities and butting heads of latter iterations, there isnt much relationship growth to be had (in fact once we get to around season 5 the flanderization of the characters kind of begins and it loses some of the more complexities) but thats because its just not the focus of the story! the story is more about what they go through together, and thats fine! thats what our shows kind of were at the time. not saying there isnt any relationship growth, but its very much not the focus because these turtles? they already understand each other in a healthy way.
so to me, these guys are kind of the most wholesome family unit

im so im so. obsessed with jason but specifically what other people think of him
reyna oh my beloved reyna <333 she knew him the best of everyone and then he disappeared, came back brand new? new friends, new girl, new person, and shes glad he's happy but where did HER jason go ? the one she trained with, spent years getting close with, spending all her time with? he was taken from her, and as happy as she is for the new jason he can never fill her heart the same
piper my lovely was basically coerced into a relationship built on false narratives with him, and she broke up bc that wasnt right !! what were they now? ofc, they were friends, but the tension of fake memories and fading feelings was still effective. it was so hard to talk to him but she wanted it to be easy again like in her fake memories
leo (this is valgraced bc im a valgrace truther ok?) hated him but loved him as a friend and more. jason was what leo wanted to be; respected, smart, listened to, not seeming like a burden. he wanted that so bad, which made him want jason, too. stuck between do i want my best friends boy or do i want to kill him and take his place? he was soo jealous but guilty of the jealousy bc it wasnt like it was jasons fault the way ppl treated the two differently. and jason was the same to leo, he wanted leos humor and be able to make a room laugh instead of having them glare at him for being to stern, even tho thats what he had been taught to do. they found a unique bond with each other by wanting aspects of each other while liking the parts they didnt want to be
cohort5/new rome [bar hazel and frank] etc looked up to him so much. he was their role model, their leader, their voice of reason, the person to turn to, THE guy. they basically idolized and dehumanized him to nothing but the boy who was raised to lead them, especially bc he was the son of jupiter. the first in so long, ofc he was important and special, why treat him like normal ?
percy ,,, he respected jason eventually. they clashed but they learned how to work through the clashing and fight alongside each other instead of against each other. they had similar yet dif personalities, percy fighting to be listened to while jason had been forced to speak. both leaders, respected, treated like leaders but in dif ways bc of the way their social groups functioned. they both wanted what each other had; percy wanted the stability of new rome, knowing he'd have people that would come back alive every summer. jason wanted the close bonds of camp halfblood without being put into a heavy spotlight
thalia loved him. he was her younger brother, how could she not? she pitied him, tho, from the way he lived in new rome. she knew the life well, being thrown into the spotlight and everything bc she herself was a daughter of zeus (like how chiron and camp treated her, esp if u compare it with how they treated percy after she came back) and hoped he would find a place better. her arms were always open for him but she had another life she wanted to live, too
octavian. pure hatred and jealousy. jason was everything he wanted. he was in leader positions, respected, listened to. octavian thought of him similarly to leo, but without the good bond. he despised jason because he wanted everything jason got just for being born from jupiter. it was unfair, and octavian decided to take advantage when jason disappeared. he wouldnt have another chance to take the spots that belonged to him
nico grew fond of him. he couldnt not have, esp after how jason treated him after the cupid incident. immediately showing his trust, backing him up, etc etc, it was finally someone nico could trust and talk to after years of running from camp and monsters and guilt of dead sisters and tense/awkward friend?ship with his very happily taken crush. nico found someone he could depend on, even if he didnt want to
beryl damn. she had some love for him. deep down, she knew she did, he was her son. but she couldnt focus on him, she had her life to take. her downfall started with thalia and zeus, jason made it worse. even if he was her son, the little love she had for him was so hard to find. too hard to even try. so, she left him, maybe hoping for a better life for him, or wanting to get rid of him. she knew both reasons were true
hedge isnt too talked about in general but he loved jason okay. the son he never had, before chuck. he was him and leos and pipers protector, and he would lay down his life for any of the three. they were his children, even if he no longer talks to them, theyll hold the spot in his heart
hazel and frank and annabeth had similar thoughts about jason. none were really close; hazel and frank looked up to jason like the rest of new rome, but could see him as a person because they actually talked to him. they thought positively about jason, he was friends with all three. even if they werent as close as tlh trio, they still liked jason. how could you not, after a war stuck with them? they think of jason like one does with a friend who used to be close, but grew apart simply because of time. they like him, but theyre not close
hera oh !! he was her son. he was her champion. he was hers, even if he was caused by the reoccuring infidelity of her husband. he was her champion and she loved him like a son. she had a genuine bond with him, one thats hard to form with a god and mortal/demigod. she was the better beryl, and him the better heracles
lesterpollo. he thinks of jason so. much. i firmly believe jason was a big big big part in lester changing, i mean, watching someone know they were going to die and WILLINGLY go into the situation? he had nothing but respect and admiration towards jason. jason was like a mentor to him, showing and reminding him of the right thing to do

Hi Kai how are you doing? Hope you are doing good
I have a couple of questions about Mr Gojo and his first wife and Satoru bitch mother.
Was mr Gojo and his first wife arranged marriage?
When did mr Gojo start seeing Satoru bitch mother?
Does Satoru mother really loves his father? Or is it what he can provide for her?
What are the things that Satoru bitch mother did to mr Gojo first wife that had her and her kid disappear from her husband life.
How did mr Gojo first wife find out about satoru bitch mom?
What were the reaction of mr Gojo family and his first wife family of the whole situation? I mean the affair, the pregnancy, mrs Gojo taking their kid and disappear from his life etc
What does mr Gojo family through and opinion on satoru mom?
Did mr Gojo really love Satoru mom?
When did mr Gojo stop feeling love for Satoru mom?
Did Satoru mom know that mr Gojo regrets and his plan? I mean his regret about their relationship and was planning to raise Satoru with his first wife.
What does Satoru mom family think of her actions?
Does mr Gojo know that Satoru mom did the same thing to him?
Don’t worry about answering all them if they spoiled any future chapter or are going to answer in a upcoming chapter.
Ps I forgot Satoru mom name.
ooh hi hii, let me answer this one by one !!
1. nope, not arranged marriage but their families are close.
2. he started seeing 'satoru bitch mother'😭 like a few months after he got divorce w his first wife.
3. satoru's mother really loves his father 💔
4. satoru's mom made her feel like they're ruining his father's new family. says things that make her feel like she's just forcing her and her son in their family, esp when satoru's dad isn't there. she once told her that she should just let satoru's father have full custody bc they're very uncomfortable when she's around. (satoru's father doesn't know about it.)
5. she was properly introduced by his dad as his new girlfriend.
6. there's no affair, but the family of satoru's father was disappointed that they didn't work if out. their families are friends, his relationship w satoru's grandparents got strained and only got better when satoru grew up. they tried to contact the family of his first wife but they wouldn't give away her information as per her request. satoru's father didn't want to give up but the family told him to respect it bc that's the least he could dk.
7. gojo family doesn't act hostile towards his mother at all but they are indifferent. they weren't involved so much w her.
8. he did at some point, but it's not the same as how he loved his first wife.
9. When Satoru told him about how she was involved w the thing w Naomi. He had always had love for her, just not the type of love he has for hist first wife. but when he found out that satoru's mom played a part in putting satoru in that situation, he stopped caring about her.
10. She does know. And that's why she's doing everything to make him love her like even a bit
11. Her family isn't that much involved w her either, just happy that she got married to a rich man :''))
12. she didn't intentionally do it. his father is aware but w his first wife gone, he thought the only right thing to do for his remaining son was to marry his mom.

Hating the narrative that Rhaenyra was some horrible friend who never loved Alicent because she called her a “whore” in a deleted scene. Her best friend is marrying her father, of course she’s pissed and lashing out ?? And she’s like 15 ??? And her mother just died ??? Wtf is wrong with this fandom. “Oh well she should have seen it from Alicent’s perspective.” Yes, the 15yo who’s been raised in a violently misogynistic medieval society and groomed herself her entire life should have the same understanding of feminist theory as modern adult Twitter users. People are genuinely insane.
I already argued for how show!Rhaenyra wasn't actually an evil nor the worst actor of the two and against Alicent as some people try to say HERE. How it is their fathers and the patriarchal society around them that shapes them into the persons they respectively are ANd how they choose to respond to each other's actions and thoughts.
Rhaenyra bursting out that Alicent is a "whore" would figure into my words about Rhaenyra, by being in her late teens like Alicent AND Alicent/Viserys leaving her out of their interactions until announced -> thus not having the space or emotional bandwidth to be the perfect respondent to news of her best friend marrying her father and essentially replacing her dead mother. This is a problem of how much grace people allow for which person.
So we should all just ignore how Daemon hugged his daughters in the deleted scenes after Laena's death, how Jace agreed with Daemon concerning bringing the fight to the greens, how Baela said to Rhaenys they should fight for Rhaenyra and her son's rights to the throne and thus argue that none of these scenes matter to how we should consider various black characters morality or competence....but we should take the deleted scene of Rhaenyra calling Alicent a whore to evaluate show!Rhaenyra's moral character. What a bunch of hypocrisy that shows a green/anti-Rhaenyra stance, not to mention its sexism.
The things with Rhaenyra's outburst versus Alicent's saying "queer customs" and trying to use her Queen position against Rhaenyra to force her to confess to sleeping with Daemon are that:
Alicent & Rhaenyra were supposed to be long-time best friends who tell each other everything about themselves (bc that's how very strong female friendships work, esp the younger you are) -> if they actually did things like share secrets, share secret thoughts and emotions and reactions, actually agreed on some things spiritually and intellectually and emotionally and then traded ways to resist their fathers' wills and outsiders' treatment against them.....then it is very difficult to see why Alicent wouldn't at least try to say anything at all to Rhaenyra, or hint at it, about what Otto wants to do in each and every single interaction she has with Rhaenyra -> instead she implies that Rhaenyra should be obedient to Viserys' will even before the announcement...therefore, this relationship never made sense to characterize as "close" because these two seem to have never come to a place where they could say they were close and shared secrets
we also already know (or should know) that Alicent's position against Rhaenyra mainly comes from Otto's manipulation and desire to seat Aegon on the throne (as Alicent doesn't try to think of why Otto acted as he did about the virginity loss thing, which was what is revealed in Rhaenyra's comebacks against her thought process in their garden confrontation) -> we know that Alicent is the one in the actual wrong and that she is coming from a false perspective..further proven by how she talks to and comes to that realization in episode 9 when she finally gets Aegon away from her father and says she never saw Otto for what he did and is

Hey, how are you? I asked you yesterday if I still could ask you about certain wisps you made and you said yes. So here we go…
First what you mean by Kingdom of heaven/ Dany origin story if Rhaella slayed, that’s sounds a quite funny topic, what is the plot?Second have you written anything about TOJ, I always found the mystery surrounding it and all the speculations people make quite interesting to say the least, I mean c’mon it’s Jon Snow birthplace.
Finally for hotd- verse I’m interest in “life on dragonstone” because I love the Targaryens and I want to know more about their life in their home island, especially for Rhaenrya after all it was her seat for more than 24 years (I think).
But only share your wisps if you want to. 😊Also if I was supposed to only ask you one thing, I’m sorry, just choose one of the three. I’m just a very curious person and given the opportunity (and also the courage) I will inquiry people about every single subject. Thanks I’m advance. 👏🏼
yeah the more the merrier!
kingdom of heaven
the premise of this is that aerys dies at duskendale (rip bozo) and that rhaegar became a boy king type at 16. however this is a rhaella POV so not too much on that, i do want to explore the distance between rhaegar and rhaella--esp with him now in the shoes of aerys. she's developed a psychogenic itch issue over time as a result of the abuse which causes rhaegar to worry & employ a few of her ladies to keep him apprised of her condition, which she understands as him "spying" on her.
i wanted to play with rhaegar's whole reading ancient texts at 3 thing as being helped along by rhaella's gift with tongues/translation, maybe even an interest in history. and given aerys' mentioned growing refusal to cooperate with the iron bank, there now being a need for an ambassador to be sent to braavos in order to negotiate the repayment structure.
rhaegar, who's been trying to connect to rhaella via books like how they bonded when he was a kid, comes to think rhaella would actually be a good addition to the party doing this & she agrees because she realizes one day that she's never left westeros. there she meets the tattered prince who is employed as her bodyguard (she has a complex about the kingsguard considering aerys' kingsguard didn't keep her safe). they bond over these empty titles they have that caused them so much pain & suffering and yknow it's a daenerys origin story so you can guess what happens next !
“Seed born of your royal father,” Pycelle blusters. “With all due respect, your Grace, to the Queen, to whom I have provided services over many a year but this child is not… born in the purple chambers, so to speak.”
“Rather blown in with the wind, hm?” the new Queen speaks. Perhaps impertinently, but Lyanna Stark’s face is yet soft with the fat of pregnancy, and a babe of her own lies in the royal nursery. Rhaella releases a pain she did not know she held and sees her son’s wife with a clarity she could not, in years before.
Rhaegar holds Rhaella’s blessed bundle in his own arms. He has not yet looked up.
Rhaella wishes to go to him—an old ache that she has always tamped down, a reflexive you are not allowed you will taint him you are watched and found wanting ringing through her fingers. The itch threatens her. A first since Braavos.
It is left to him to fill the distance, then.
Him to raise his face so bright and measured, find her eyes with his own, so much darker than hers, yet of her and her son still. “Daenerys Windblown,” the King softly says, in front of all the Council. “Princess Daenerys Targaryen, the Windblown. Long awaited.”
“Perhaps one day she shall be Queen," Lyanna adds, defiant, denying any other the chance to speak. To which Rhaella can think only of Braavos' salty streets instead, and festival masks crowned with seashells—and freedom from all such premonitions
TOJ / all candles fall quiet
this is just vibes lol i like the chatty chattyness of two people newly in luv
“Fine, then. Your turn.”
Rhaegar hums, pretends to think about it. “The Others. The Others take this, the Others take that.”
Lyanna frowns. “You jape me. I heard southron men say it often at that last grand tourney. We Northerners are surely not the only ones who would say this.”
“Southroners say it, certainly,” he concedes, “yet not half so often. In the streets of King’s Landing, you will oft hear Maegor’s teats, or Seven Hells.”
She snorts. “Seven this, Seven that.”
“Shall the Others take them too?” he teases, and she groans. “You’re terrible!”
“Apologies,” he murmurs, bringing her hand to his mouth and brushing his mouth across her skin, rubbing his nose at the knuckle of each finger. Gods be good, her skin is always so comfortingly cold. “Your turn.”
“Arbor Gold?” she tries, and he arches a brow.
life on dragonstone
meant to be a slice of life with the rhaenyra/laena/harwin/laenor/daemon/qarl hexagon going on. i LOVE this dynamic that george gave us by accident i assume, i think it's so interesting & it's the one thing in fire & blood that i desperately wish had an equivalent in the main story.
Life has not gone quite according to plan, admittedly. Rhaenyra doesn’t wonder if perhaps… in the future, should her sons look back, how they might think of her. Of the choices she’s made, whether the love she has given them has been enough to make up for all the horror they have been subjected to?
No, that is not fair to herself, Rhaenyra does not believe. They will not be children forever. She has walked into her life with her eyes wide open and her children will do the same. Laenor did, when she wed him, Daemon as well, Harwin always professed to. Rhaenyra has never asked anyone to accept what they could not for her sake, nor would she take upon herself more than she could handle simply in love’s name. Everything she has ever done is by her own free choice.
Perhaps Laena knew that better than anyone. It is this loss that Rhaenyra feels most keenly, as one who would be a mother to Laena's girls.

hello!!! i’ve been going through ur blog all day and i am so in awe of ur incredible knowledge and interpretations of themes narratives and symbolism in asoiaf like. ur writing is soooo beautiful and haunting and just spectacularly wonderful! all of ur metas on different regions/places/cultures/characters (especially harrenhal) is just honestly inspiring like my brain has been going Insane all day (in the absolute best way.) i would loooove to hear ur interpretations or thoughts on the vale and the arryns! i feel like regionally they’re very underrated and super interesting given their historical mythological figures (like alyssa arryn) and their piety towards the faith!! they’re haughty and snobby and their refusal to divert from tradition is just v cool to me. i would love to hear ur take!! (ps thank u for all ur content it has made my day and opened my mind <3)
the vale! it took me a while to come around to it honestly. it’s very gothic, not in the haunted way but the trapped in a cold cavernous mansion with your evil weird extended family way. I think it goes along with the deconstruction of chivalry and knighthood happening throughout the series- this place with a reputation for noble knights and raising heroes is actually hollow and falling in on itself- the nobility is a facade, everyone has an agenda, and no one says what they mean. The House of Arryn has fallen into complete and probably unsalvageable decline. Jon Arryn’s planning arguably caused every conflict in the series but the Others and he is dead before the series even starts.
They’re not quite into Southern politics like the Reach and Crownlands, where people lie and change loyalties very easily, but politics in the sense where everyone has a fixed role that they lie to keep up. I think it’s telling that they respect widowhood and widows ruling more than the other kingdoms (unlike cersei and catelyn where they say well you’re a woman first and thus not worthy of respect)- once you’ve stepped into that role of wife, you command respect even after you become a widow. All the Vale houses have been involved in this game of scrabbling for favor with the Arryns where everyone knows and respects the ‘rules’ which has gone on for so long because people act with subtle moves and thinly veiled everything.
I think their refusal to change out of pride and distance is super interesting especially when you compare it to the riverlands, which never changes because of the cycle of feudal violence. Harrenhal and the Eyrie were in very similar situations during the Conquest, these huge castles that thought they were above reproach which would subsequently get owned by their inability to account for dragons. But Harrenhal’s destruction is violent, and the Eyrie’s is political, through the use of an unspoken threat (visenya taking Sharra Arryn’s son for a dragon ride.) If the Riverlands are haunted, the Eyrie is hollow and empty. They’re also still locked in an ongoing conflict with the hill tribes, the original inhabitants of the vale that the Arryns and the rest of the Andals colonized. I think battle continues because having social roles of “civilized” and “uncivilized” benefits the Arryns far more than driving the hill tribes out entirely.
So yeah initially i didn’t rlly think too much abt thee Arryns and vale politics but in thinking abt how to respond to this i totally see how they are rlly interesting esp as part of that knighthood deconstruction. SO excited to see what Alayne Stone does with them next book :)

I wish Tumblr's search system wasn't utter shit so I can link the post, but a LONNNNGGGGG time ago I reblogged a post and in the tags I came up with an idea for a story about a prince with no respect for animal life who gets kicked out of his home by forest animals and then meets a peasant girl who teaches him to value wildlife. I sat on it for a long time and finally decided to start writing it! HERE'S CH 1 (tagging @musicrunsthroughmysoul because I remember you replied to that post saying the story sounded cool lol but no pressure to read ofc esp if you don't remember it hahaha)
The orange glow of the sun began to shine through the evergreens as dawn broke. The fog was beginning to lift from the sky, as a light breeze began to waft through, carrying with it the scent of the morning dew. It was a still, quiet dawn. The forests' inhabitants had not yet risen from their resting places. Not a sound could be heard throughout the ground. Only the birds sitting in the trees were making the first peeps of the day.
Suddenly, a quick, sharp plucking sound rang out from within the forest. The animals, startled awake by the noise, began to clamor for safety in their confusion. The methodic trampling of horses' hooves could soon be heard, as well as loud, boisterous hollering from their riders. At the head of the party was the young Prince Orion. Followed by his hunting dogs, he rode atop his majestic brown horse as he galloped through the trees. The prince stopped suddenly when he spotted a doe hiding with her fawn. He smiled confidently to himself. He gathered his bow and arrow and aimed at the young doe's head. He pulled his arm back and released. It was a perfect hit, hitting her right between the eyes, and the animal dropped. The prince ordered his men to gather the body and he quietly went off in search of the baby deer that had scampered off. He came upon the fawn rather quickly, cowering in the grass. He raised an eyebrow and a slow, smug, smile began forming on his face. It was going to be too easy.
"Don't worry, little one," the prince said as he aimed his arrow once more, "You'll be with your mother again soon." He released his shot and the fawn died instantly.
Prince Orion was soon met with the rest of his party and after they picked up the fawn's lifeless body he turned to them, "Come," he said, "I'm in the mood to hunt something challenging."
One of his men sounded the horns and they rode off, as loud and rambunctious as ever. They whooped, and yelled, whacking on trees, grass, shrubbery, and flowers with their axes. Gradually their noises faded away, and the forest was silent again. A soft rustling in the grass was all that was heard, and an old deer slowly emerged from behind the trees.
At his appearance, a crow flew down from the top of the trees. He cawed and perched on the deer's antlers.
"So," the deer said, "Once again Prince Orion has disturbed our peaceful woods."
The crow nodded his head, "He rode out at first light. It appears he prefers spending today terrorizing the grounds. After his falcons terrorized the skies yesterday."
The deer shook his head, "The prince is nothing more than a callous, greedy child. The earth is nothing to him but a plaything."
"What else is to be expected? He is his father's son."
The deer snorted, "Do not mention that petulant king. King Rico is even worse than his son."
"I've heard tell," the crow said in a low voice, "That the king plans on cutting down the remaining forests. From this region all the way to the former boars' territories."
The deer rattled his head, "It's not enough for them to disturb our peace and kill our children for sport, now they want to destroy our homes and wipe us out completely."
"Maybe not all is lost. Perhaps the young prince can be reasoned with."
"Do you believe him capable?"
"I can't be too sure," the crow said, "But he is young. Maybe there is still hope for him. Maybe there is still a chance we can reach him and open his eyes to the damage he and his father cause."
"Perhaps you could be right, " the deer said slowly, "Where do you think he has ridden to now?"
"He spoke of wanting a challenge. I assume he'll venture into wolf territory."
"Very well," the deer nodded, "Go. Warn the packs. Tell the wolf leaders not to harm him. Once he's back, we'll see if he can be reasoned with."
"You want to protect the wolves?"
"If there's any chance that we can spare any life and reason with Prince Orion then yes. He's a great hunter but he's never hunted one of the wolves. If he harms a cub they won't let him live. Go. Before it's too late."
The bird nodded and took to the sky. He flew quickly, unsure if he would be able to warn the wolves before the prince arrived. He spotted the prince and his hunting party still riding through the woods. He cawed loudly, getting the attention of his fellow crows. He reached wolf territory, gaining a small mob of crows. They remained in the sky cawing and circling the air as he swooped down on a familiar old beast.
He perched atop the wolf's head and cawed in greeting. The wolf sniffed him, bowed, and thumped his tail.
"Ah," the wolf said, "Old friend. How good to see you. What do I owe the pleasure?"
"I've come with a warning. Prince Orion is on his way. He comes with a large hunting party."
The wolf shook his grey fur and barked, "I'd like to see that foolish prince attack one of the pack. I am not afraid of him or any of his party."
"There's more," the crow said, "You see, the deers sent me here to warn you."
"The deers sent you? To warn us wolves? I cannot fathom the situation to be that severe."
"It is. The prince isn't just riding through to hunt. I've heard his father's plans to destroy these woods. Every last bit of it."
The wolf snarled, baring his teeth, "Let him try. I'll attack his son before he attacks my woods."
"No! The deers want to handle this as peacefully as possible. They want to see if the young man can be reasoned with. You're not to harm him. I've gathered my brethren to call the alarms at his arrival for the safety of your wolves. With luck, no one will be harmed, we can put a stop to all this once and for all, and we can all live in harmony as before."
"Very well," the wolf said, "Send my thanks to the deers. We'll handle this peacefully then."
The mob of crows began calling out incessantly and aggressively. Their cries were followed by the sound of trampling hooves, the hunting horns, and the familiar jeering and whooping of Prince Orion's hunting party.
"He's coming," the cow said, "Go! Run and hide."
The wolf snarled again but ran off into the woods. The wolves lifted their head to the crows and on hearing their warning, scampered off into the forest.
The prince's party arrived. The young men were entering quietly now that they were reaching their desired grounds. They maneuvered their horses to make the least possible noise. The prince methodically scoured the area, eager to find his next conquest. After some time he began to grow impatient. It seemed there was nothing in these parts of the woods.
He clicked his tongue, "I know the wolves are around here somewhere," he muttered to himself.
He rode off, leaving the rest of his group behind. He was deep in the forest now, with a fierce determination that he would not leave empty-handed. He was getting more frustrated and was muttering curses towards the wolves under his breath when he heard the sudden noise of a twig breaking. He halted instantly and looked behind himself, wondering if it was one of his party that had caught up to him. He saw no one and realized he must have finally stumbled across his next trophy.
He smirked to himself and decided he would hunt on foot. He leaped off his steed and slowly crouched his way into the trees. It did not take him long to stumble across a wolf pup trying to hide in the grass.
"What's the matter, little one," Prince Orion teased the pup, "Lost your mother? Couldn't keep up with her quick enough?"
The pup began to yelp but it only made the prince laugh, "You know something, I was hoping for more of a challenge. Something bigger. But you'll have to do for now."
He set his bow and arrow and aimed at the pup. He was about to release when he heard a snarl and was knocked down to his feet. Stunned, he found himself underneath a large, full-grown wolf snarling at him and baring its teeth.
"You must be the mother," The prince smirked, as if unfazed.
The wolf growled viciously but did not bite. The prince did not move, nor did he appear bothered. He let the wolf continue to bark and slowly crept his hand into his bag. Without letting the wolf see, he took out a small knife and stabbed it in its front leg. The animal yelped in pain and jumped back. Prince Orion immediately hopped back up. Once he was on his feet he aimed his arrow at the large animal. Only now did the wolf lunge at him. The prince was able to get out of the wolf's way in time and the animal only succeeded in ripping off a piece of his cloak sleeve.
"You'll have to be faster than that," he told the beast.
The wolf growled at him, a low, threatening growl, and readied itself to lunge again.
This excited the daring prince, and he prepared himself as well, "Only one of us has weapons," he teased the wolf, "And my party will be here any moment. I'm afraid you'll be outnumbered soon."
Suddenly a snarl came from behind the prince, and before he could turn around another wolf darted at him and knocked him to the dirt. Before he could gain one of his weapons, the animal bit him on his leg. The prince yelled in pain and suddenly there came a large pack of wolves.
It looked to Prince Orion that every wolf that belonged to the woods was here now, ready to attack him. Only now did he feel fear. All he could see was their irate eyes staring at him, their sharp teeth snapping at him, ready to harm him. It occurred to him now that he was the one in danger now. He waited for the sound of hooves, or to hear one of his party, but the only thing he could hear was the snarling of the wolves and the erratic beating of his heart in his ears.
He was beginning to lose hope of someone arriving in time but he then heard fast galloping, and the wolves began to get distracted by the noise. He breathed a sigh of relief, feeling his courage coming back to him. He tried sitting up, almost forgetting that his leg was injured, until he moved it. He sucked in air, trying to ignore the pain until he could get one of his men to help so as not to regain the attention of the wolves.
When the horses sounded near the wolves looked at the prince, snarled, and fled back into the woods.
The prince chuckled to himself, "Cowards", he muttered to himself.
It was not long until the hunting party reached him. Two of the men helped him back on his horse, "Damned wolves," he said to them, "Got me on my leg. We'll have to go back."
His men heeded and escorted him back to the castle. One of them suggested they call for the physician, but Prince Orion assured everyone there was no need. He would simply have one of his menservants clean his wound.
He lay on the sofa as a servant tended to the wound. His leg was cleaned, and fortunately for the prince, it seemed that the wolf did not bite him that deeply. The servant wrapped a clean cloth around his leg and humbly suggested refraining from hunting for a day or two.
This upset the prince, who glared at the servant and snapped, "And let the wolves think they've won! Never! I plan on riding out at dawn tomorrow. I'll not give those wolves peace until I have one dead on my horse's back, ready to be skinned for hat trimmings!"
The servant made no reply, only bowed and exited the room.
The prince scoffed and got up to walk. Luckily, he felt no pain and was sure that he could ride out in the morning as planned.
When the king and queen heard of his injury, they saw him at once.
"Do not fear," he told them, "It's not a serious cut. Seems like the beast didn't want to hurt me. The coward."
His mother tried warning him against returning to hunt, but he told her exactly what he told the servant.
"He's quite right," his father said, "Animals are to be dominated. They fear us, we do not fear them."
Prince Orion grinned and told his father all about his hunting trip, about how he nearly battled with a wolf with his own hands. His mother was shocked but the king threw his head back and let out a loud, boisterous laugh.
"That's my son," he said proudly, "He has no fear! Can take on anything, man or animal!"
The prince looked at his father, smiling, and wondered if he'd be so proud if he had told him about how for a moment, before his party came, he felt fear for the first time in his life as he was surrounded by the wolves.
That's why I have to go back, he thought, I won't let the wolves get to me. I have to hunt them so they know that I am the powerful one.
That night at dinner Prince Orion and the king continued to talk about hunting.
"I did catch deer," the prince told his father, "A mother and her fawn, but tomorrow I plan on bringing home that wolf that bit me."
"Too right you will," his father encouraged him, "I'll order space over the mantle."
"No," Prince Orion shook his head, "I want that wolf skinned. I want a special hat made, with its fur trimmed around it, and I want a special coat to go with it, trimmed with all the extra fur. I want it around the cuffs and on the lapels."
"Gracious," the queen exclaimed.
The king merely laughed, "And so you'll have it then! Besides, there's plenty of time to decide on a trophy for the mantle. Especially when I put my plan in motion."
"You mean you're really going to clear out the forests, father?"
"Yes, I am! I'm getting rid of everything! No wolves, no deer, nothing! This land will be ours! I plan on wiping out all the animals, cutting down all the trees, and building another estate! With the finest apartments this country has ever seen! I figure there's nothing wrong with us having another home nearby, or we can use that to host parties, and then that home will be yours one day. I expect you to have a large family, with lots of sons. It'll be perfect for the future heirs."
"It certainly will! I thank you, father."
"My boy it's about time we get you settled down, you're eighteen now. Soon we'll be finding a match for you. It's time to start thinking about the future. And besides, I think we've let the animals live in peace long enough, don't you?"
"Far too long," The prince agreed, "Their time has come. And I can't wait to be the first one to drive them out at dawn tomorrow."
Unbeknownst to anyone at the table, the royal family was being watched.
A familiar old gray wolf, with his crow friend sitting atop his head, heard the prince and his father discuss their plans.
The wolf bared his teeth, "So they want to be rid of all of us then?"
"There's no reasoning with the young prince," the crow told him, "It'll be useless. He's too much like his father."
"Blasted humans," the wolf sneered, "They think they rule the world."
"They think they own it," the crow agreed.
"Well, we'll show them. No more mercy. No more patience. The forest is our home. You need to inform the deers. This means war! They will know the strength of the animals!"
The crow let out a loud caw and flew into the sky. The gray wolf watched him go and turned his attention back to the prince. His yellow eyes followed the young man, glaring at him. If he had been able, he'd claw the prince then and there, but he knew that with the rest of the royal family around, particularly his father the king, and with all the servants they had, they'd kill him before he ever got close to the prince.
Humans, he lamented bitterly to himself. They have weapons. They outnumber us. They have machines. They want to rule the world. But it's time they learn their place. We have been here before them, we'll be here long after them, and if they can't respect us or our home, we'll deal with them. In our way. And we will win!
As the wolf's thoughts ignited his desire to fight the young prince, he heard a rustling nearby. He hurried deeper into the dark and hid behind some shrubs. He watched closely and saw that an old man, a servant of the royal family, was slowly shuffling his feet towards the stables with a basket of carrots and apples for the horses.
The wolf watched him go and sneered lightly. Humans, the thought again with disdain. When he heard the stable doors close behind him he took the opportunity to run back into the forest. Soon, he thought, The humans will be dealt with soon. Tomorrow. Before first light. In our way. He repeated to himself.
The crow flew down to the deers and told them what had been heard.
"So," the old deer said, "There is no hope, then?"
"None," the crow affirmed, "Prince Orion is too far gone. He has no respect for life. Not even his own."
"Very well," the deer bowed, "A shame. But if the wolves want war we won't stand in their way."
"Will you help them?"
"Us deers," the elder exclaimed, "Help the wolves? Don't be absurd."
"You warned them when they were going to be hunted," the crow reminded him.
"Yes, but that was necessary. We had to see how far the prince would go. It was for the greater good."
"This is also for the greater good. Sir, The king is serious about his plans. He wants to get rid of the forest. Everything."
"Do you really think he's capable?"
"Why wouldn't he be? He has power, resources, hands. He can get rid of every animal, cut down every tree without personally having to lift a finger."
"You're right," the elder blinked sadly, "You're right. Very well. Tell the wolves they have our support."
The crow bowed and flew into the air. The old deer waited until the bird was well into the sky before he started strolling slowly through the forest. He felt troubled. He had wanted to avoid any confrontation with humans. He wanted only to live in peace. But he had had too much faith in the young prince. He should have been prepared for the lad to be too far gone. He was indeed his father's son. It was a pity. He remembered watching the prince when he was a young boy. He was always so courageous and seemed to be in awe of the woods, and he loved the animals. But as he got older, his fascination turned to possession. He felt it was his God-given right to own everything he saw.
The deer snorted and shook his head. There would be no more dwelling on the Lost Prince. The animals had a right to protect their home. They had a right to live. And if they couldn't make the royals understand that by peace, they would learn by force. The elder deer lifted his head proudly, feeling resolved with the decision. They would fight for their home.
Prince Orion had a hard time sleeping that night. He lay as stiff as a corpse in his bed, trying to ignore the million yellow eyes of the wolves that glared at him as she shut his eyes. The cold night air seemed to awaken the pain in his leg, and it throbbed. He could almost feel the animal continuing to bite him, chewing his leg off.
Ridiculous, he whispered in the darkness of his room. They cannot harm me. I am stronger than any beast. Anyway, come dawn I'll get rid of them all.
He sat up in his bed, deciding he would wait until he could dress for the hunt. He was beginning to feel at ease and safe in his room when he thought he heard a crow nearby.
"It can't be dawn yet," he whispered, "Can it?"
He got up from bed and looked out of his window. It did appear that dawn was approaching and he could see a single crow sitting on a tree branch.
He smiled to himself. A shame, he thought, The crows are always reliable to wake me up for a hunt. But after today my falcons will enjoy chasing you. Ah, well, such is the life of a bird.
He let go of the curtain he was peeking out of and turned to dress.
The prince then heard his bedroom door creak. He glanced but could see nothing. It was still quite dark in his room, but he was sure it was only his mind playing tricks on him. He turned his attention back to dressing.
He was getting his clothes when he suddenly thought he heard the faint sound of someone breathing. He quickly turned around and saw a pair of yellow eyes glowering at him.
"The wolf," he whispered in shock, "You're the one that bit me!"
The wolf snarled and positioned himself to attack. Prince Orion darted out of the way but the animal barked and darted at him. Though Prince Orion had a vastly spacious room, the wolf was too quick and large. He was able to jump on the bed and pounce on the prince before he could even leave his chambers or get any sort of weapon to help him.
In what seemed like an instant, the wolf toppled him to the floor, standing over him. "So," the wolf snarled, "You want to wear my fur trimmings?" He growled low, threateningly and the prince was so frightened he could only stammer and stare at the gray beast bug-eyed like a hooked fish.
The wolf snapped at him, baring his pointed teeth right at the prince's neck. The prince could only whimper, so certain that his death was near.
"Go on then," the prince said eventually, feeling the wolf's breath on his face, "Kill me. Quick."
The wolf growled again but then, to the utter astonishment of the prince, he moved away, "Leave. I won't kill you. You don't deserve that."
Prince Orion scampered away and the wolf sat there, quiet and contemplative. The prince made sure he was not looking when he inconspicuously grabbed his bow and arrow.
"What a fool you are," the prince sneered, "Letting your prey go like that."
The wolf glanced at him and before he could react the prince shot his arrow at the unsuspecting animal. The wolf was able to jump out of the way, but not without getting hit on the side. He yelped in pain, but the prince could see that the wound was not deep. The wolf was able to notice this as well. He was able the arrow off of him with his teeth and snarled. "I gave you a chance," he said in a low voice, "A chance to live. Now I promise I'll stop at nothing to tear out your insides." The prince could see in his yellow eyes that he was sincere. The wolf snarled and chased him down. The prince had never seen a more angry, determined wolf. He had witnessed in the animal's eyes a deep, intense hatred the likes of which he had never seen before.
The prince eventually stumbled outdoors, feeling that perhaps in the vast area, he could find a place to run away or hide from his prosecutor, but he soon discovered that he was not alone.
To his shock and immense horror, he found that he was surrounded by a pack of wolves. They all glared at him and were positioned to attack. He could hear the low rumbling of their aggrieved growls, and he saw in their eyes the same vile hatred he'd seen in the older wolf. "Try hunting us now," A low voice startled the prince from behind. Prince Orion turned and saw the old wolf approaching him stealthily, "Please," the prince whispered, "Call them off." "I'm afraid it's too late, my young prince. You've made your bed. Now you must lie in it." "I'm sorry," Prince Orion squeaked, "I'm sorry. Please." "It's no use. I had given you one last chance, and you spoiled it. Oh, but don't worry. We're good sports. We'll give you a few seconds to get a head start. So take it. Run."
This time he listened to what he was told. He ran back inside the house and alarmed the servants of the palace. The palace was only now beginning to wake up. How everyone had been able to sleep through the sounds the wolf had made and his running through the corridors, he did not know, and it aggravated the prince.
"You fools," he yelled when he saw the first servants and cooks leaving their bedrooms, "You utterly useless fools! There's an entire pack of wolves outside and none of you are aware!"
They only stared in confusion until a large group of wolves came barging in. Chaos ensued, as the servants started running and screaming. Even his hunting dogs scampered about. Many ran upstairs or cowered but none of the wolves came near them or his dogs, only going after the prince.
"The falcons," he ordered, "Release my falcons!"
One of the servants nodded and ran outside to their cages. A wolf chased after him and growled.
"I wouldn't do that," he warned the servant, "Unless you want us as your enemy. You're not a part of this. We won't harm you... if you're on our side."
The servant hesitated, his hand lingering around the door of their cages, but ultimately, they listened to the wolf. "A wise decision," the wolf told him before returning to the pack. The servant breathed a deep sigh of relief and stood in place with his knees knocking when the prince darted near him. "You insolent dunderhead," he snapped, "How dare you defile my orders!" Prince Orion shoved him out of the way and hastily opened the falcon cages. The wolves stopped in their tracks, watching as the birds flew into the sky. Prince Orion smirked, thinking that they would now stop chasing him.
What he did not count on was the dark circle in the sky, like a black cloud forming, and a horde of crows coming swooping down on the falcons. They cawed angrily and some even threw rocks and sticks. It was obvious to Prince Orion that the birds had been prepared for this moment.
"Oh, yes," the old gray wolf sneered nearby as if reading his thoughts, "We're quite prepared. You see, our friends of the sky don't take too kindly to the falcons hunting them. So you see, my poor unfortunate prince, you're done for. No falcons or weapons can help you now."
The wolf started to move towards him, stalking low to the ground, letting out a low growl, and the prince felt as if his end was near.
"Please," Prince Orion whispered backing away, "Why? Why hunt me?"
"You and your father," the wolf said in a menacing voice, "Were planning on ridding the forest today, were you not?"
"Yes," the prince gulped, "Yes. I'm sorry. How did you know?"
"We know all. We know everything that concerns our home! So, animals are to be dominated, are they? You've let us live in peace for too long, isn't that right?"
"I'm sorry," the prince repeated desperately, "I'm sorry."
"It's too late for that! We gave you a chance! We let you live yesterday. I let you live yesterday, did I not! I could have killed you. I could have torn you apart with my claws and teeth. I had you on the ground. It would have been too easy. Indeed, I should have killed you then and there. But I wanted to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was some good in you. But there is nothing. Nothing worth saving. Killing you would have been a favor, a mercy to us all. No one would have mourned you. You would have left nothing decent behind. It's time you learn, you infantile prince, that you are nothing!"
The wolf lunged at the prince and tackled him to the ground, he growled and glared at the prince, the same, intense loathing he had seen before in those yellow eyes pierced his soul. He felt in the pit of his stomach that it would be the last thing he'd ever see in this world.
The prince closed his eyes, awaiting his certain death when suddenly a shot rang out. He hastily opened his eyes and saw his father standing nearby with a musket in his hands.
The wolves snarled at the king, but he was unfazed and only poured powder into the rifle to shoot again.
"Leave," the prince whispered to the wolf, "Call your pack and run away while you still can."
The wolf turned to him, "What?"
"He won't stop until he kills you all. Is that what you want?"
"Let him try. You didn't think that we were only here for you, now, did you? You and your father have tortured us long enough. This is both of your doings."
Prince Orion stared at the elder wolf in utter shock. There was no way the animals had planned to defeat his father, could they? He was unstoppable. All powerful. He was the king.
King Rio aimed the gun straight at the elder wolf, but he only stared back at the king in contempt. The gun was set to fire, but before it went off there was a loud, vicious caw and a large crow swooped down and pecked at the king. In his disconcertment, another crow flew down and swatted the musket out of his hands. The gun went off and the bullet went off into the sky without hitting anything.
The king was able to swat off the crows that were now both pecking at him but he was suddenly thrown to the floor by a large deer. The deer kicked its front legs and positioned himself to fight, pointing his antlers toward the king.
The king lay on the floor startled, covering his face, cowering in fear. Prince Orion had never seen his father like this. It shook him to his core. He was witnessing that even his father could be knocked off his feet. He had discovered that even his father was human. A mere mortal, not as high and mighty as he had always presented himself or known him to be.
As his father was being cornered on the floor, a group of younger deers appeared and began kicking and throwing the musket. Eventually, they were able to throw it against a tree and break the stock.
When the musket was broken the large, old deer moved from the king to the prince. All of the animals, even the wolves, moved out of his way. He walked slowly, his head low, and his antlers positioned to attack.
"Please," the prince whispered, "Let us go."
"I'm afraid it's out of my hands now."
"There's no need to do this, m - my father and I -"
"You and your father have done enough! You've killed our mothers and our children, defiled our homes with your trash, taken our food, or destroyed it. And it still wasn't enough. You wanted to rid of us all, all for your own pleasure! Did you not think that we had a right to live, in a place we've inhabited long before you were born, did you not think, you foolish young child, that we would fight? That we wouldn't protect our home!"
The animal kicked his front legs and gave a loud, angry snort. This aroused all the other animals, and Prince Orion soon heard the snorting, howls, and caws of a million different animals.
"We were wrong," the Prince tried pleading, "But I've learned my lesson."
"You've learned nothing! You know no respect, no humility, or any value. All you've learned today is fear. Finally, fear of the animals, fear for your own life. But that is not sufficient. Today is also the day you learn that humans are just like any animal, be they the son of a king or the son of a deer, and all animals bleed. You, my unfortunate lad, are going to find out that all animals, just like you, can die!"
"No," the prince yelled, '"No, I beg of you!"
The wolves began to stalk towards him, inching closer and closer, "How does it feel," the old, gray wolf at the head of the pack asked him, "Prince Orion, to be the one hunted for once?"
"Dear god, please," the prince said, scurrying to his feet, "Let us go."
The deer snorted, "Your only chance now is to flee into the woods. And flee you must, because once we find you, you're dead. Let him run. We'll find him eventually."
The wolf snarled but heeded and waited. Prince Orion dashed into the woods, his blood beating in his ears. He ran as fast as his feet would carry him. It did not feel fast enough. Every twig he stepped on, every leaf or tree he passed, he was certain that the wolves were right behind him. He ran well past deer territory, and then wolf territory, terrified that they would be waiting for him.
Skyward, he could see the black swarm of crows, cawing and alerting the wolves of his whereabouts. Watching them in the sky, he finally understood why the creatures were omens of death. He felt as if they were his executioners, calling his name to lead him to the gallows. He ducked and swerved to try to throw them off, but they were persistent. Prince Orion was becoming increasingly aware that every animal in this forest wanted him and his father dead.
He ran with this thought, it kept him moving, even when he felt his cheeks on fire, and his chest burned. He wanted to stop, to lay in the forest and await his imminent doom, but he would not let them win. He ran so far, and so long, the sun was high in the sky, when he came across a large, wide river.
"This must be where the animals drink from," he contemplated. He took a quick moment to catch his breath, but he could hear the sound of the crows flying nearby. He watched the movements of the river, it looked large, powerful, and dangerous. He understood that his life now depended on the water's mercy.
He stood at the river's edge, hesitating on whether he should try to swim across. The current was strong, and the rushing of the water was so loud it blocked out all other thoughts. Prince Orion gazed at the movements of the white spray, hypnotized. He didn't even have an idea of how deep the water was, and all he could think of as he watched the crashing of the river against the rocks was how many animals - how many humans - had this river drowned? How many bodies were lying on its floor, and would his be one of them?
He heard the menacing sounds of the crows above, like tenacious soldiers of the Grim Reaper's army, approaching. Prince Orion didn't have much time. He had to make a decision now.
"Either way," he thought to himself, "I'm dead. Either I'll be drowned by the river or the wolves will slash my throat."
It seemed like his only choice now was to choose which way he wanted to greet death. The sounds of the crows were getting closer, he could see in his mind's eyes the vile eyes of the wolves, and made his decision. He took off his coat for the crows to find, put one foot in front of him, and jumped into the water.

Okay so going back to the fact that me and the devil is canary's song..
While you could appoint it to her relationship with many of the main men in the fic I think it especially applies to her and graves just because the lyrics fit so well to their dynamic
Like the lyrics, "me and the devil walking side by side" is quite obviously yknow THEM but graves truly is the devil to canary and the people around, like price has always treated her with respect (not without his flaws of course) I can't say the same for makorov of course but graves ABUSED AND MANIPULATED canary way before any other character came into the picture (makorvov esp) so like she doesnt know him to be any different, he really is the devil to her
there's also the lyrics,
"And I'm gonna see my man until I get satisfied" could be canary singing about her and price and their affair, the way she choose price over graves (rightfully so) and how graves was so pissed about it and her defiance and her finally getting her freedom from graves
"Peple dogging me around" is absoubletly graves and his manipulation and his abuse towards canary over the course of their marriage
And then of my fav points, "it must be that old evil spirit so deep down in your ground" IS ABSOUBLETLY ABOUT ADLER AND HOW HE TOOK GRAVES ON AS HIS OWN... HIS GREED AND LUST FOR POWER SEEPING IN AND CORRUPTING GRAVES, (not saying he wasn't already corrupted) but the way that graves' greed for power and controll over every aspect of his and canarys life definetly comes from adler and his teachings that he installed in him when he first took him on, and how it affected canary through their marriage
Moving on to, "you may bury my body down by the highway side" now I think this is canary basically telling graves that it doesn't matter what he does to her , he can pretend that he was adler's son, and the estate belongs to him etc etc, but at the end of the day canary will always be in the back of his mind, deep down he knows that everything he has is down to her and IS ACTUALLY HERS and he had to live with that
Anyway this is just my interpretation, and ofcourse you can applies this to any character and canary really, (price, graves, adler, makorvov) but that's just my view
(Sorry this was so long 😭)
🍒🍒
yes yes yes i am loving this
like with price, he was charming and respected her (for the most part) and with makarov, canary knew what kind of man he was going to be before she ever met him, but graves?? graves was the ultimate betrayal she didn't see coming because she truly did love him and he manipulated her and while he may never have hit her (until the last chapters) he absolutely did abuse her and was more than happy to let other people abuse her too. even adler, who was without a doubt awful to her, would never have let that happen to her.
and the second part about her choosing price over graves??? absolutely. esp given that she chose price over him and then worked with price to take graves and makarov down even though she didn't fully trust him. that had to really sting for graves because she's always forgiven him before, always looked the other way but that was because she had no choice and he's convinced himself that it was because she felt some kind of attachment to him. and now that she has options and she so easily would pick price over him, that she would dare to pick anyone but him???
"People dogging me around" is soooo much graves, but i think it also fits adler and his treatment of her through her childhood. like graves was awful to her, but that animosity toward her started from adler and i think to some extent graves learned that manipulating her wasn't something to be ashamed of because he watched adler do it too.
YES!! regardless of whether adler meant to or not, he essentially raised graves to see his treatment of canary as okay and something that had to be done to secure his power. of course graves could've ended up like that had adler never taken him in because he still would've been part of adler's empire, but it would've been nowhere near the extent it became where he was willing to work with makarov. and he def would have never been able to get close enough to canary to be able to manipulate her into marriage. while canary def has some of adler's anger and his want for violent justice, graves is absolutely all of the worst parts of adler put together.
i wholeheartedly agree with this. and you can kind of see that in graves's mind in the final chapter. he knows that canary is out of his league, that he only had her and only ever would've gotten her through manipulation because at the end of the day, she's russell adler's daughter. everything he has belongs to her, and it doesn't matter how close graves thought he was with adler; the only reason he has the wealth, the power that he has now is because of her and she could take it all away with a wave of her hand. he will always know he didn't earn a single thing he has, and that whether canary had died or lived, adler never cared enough for him because he's not family.
omg pls don't apologize, this was lovely and such a good interpretation!! i could talk about the canary/adler/graves dynamics all day!! 💜

Amphinis’ current Elector and cabinet? 😗
— ur secret admirer fr
Tumblr media
The Elector currently is Madame Ione Merivadas, who was from Lily Rock. Her parents were well respected by the previous elector and spent a good half of her childhood in Nereus helping her. Ione spent her childhood with her guardian Nedite, who raised her alongside many of the other children who’s parents couldn’t raise them full time.
When she turned 9 her parents brought her with them to Nereus where she studied under the previous Elector who took her under her wing. At 15 she began her “political” career by joining the Nereus Postal Service. At a young age she proved herself to both the Elector and many other politicians in Amphinis, with both her resourcefulness and leadership skills. It was obvious that the Elector would nominate her as a potential heir, which she did. When Ione was confirmed as the next Elector she was the youngest to be in this position. Her first few years were riddled with anxiety and war from the situation in Glimmerier, however she was able to handle the emergency well.
Tumblr media
Prosym- a 1/2 sea person who was born on one of the islands of the Ondes. She spent most of her younger years tricking travelers in the oceans. When they were children she met Ione and the two became very close friends. Before she became big politically the two would hang out where Ione would sit in boats and Prosym would play tricks for her. Their time together got limited upon Ione’s schooling and stuff but when Ione came back they were super happy to be together
Anenon- he also was from the Ondes but he didnt know Prosym or Ione. His family were one of the few rich people in Amphinis which allowed him a lot of political influence. Him and Ione were political rivals for a bit but that was more bc the pressure his family put him under and less because he was politically ambitious. He agreed to quit his political life and join Ione and Prosym’s little family if theyd have him which they happily did.
Ilias- Ilias was the son of the last main family in Amphinis, the eldest son. He ran against Ione for the position pretty half heartedly. Was in a similar boat as Anenon. He was pretty ok with having power even if not as direct. He used to be with India before she was with Benita and they have a few kids together who they try their best to coparent
Nedite- Nedite is your friendly age old sea monster. They took a very parental role with Ione when she was younger so when she had to choose a second in command the choice was easy. Nedite has had a long life, too long to even properly record but spends most of their day caring for children esp those abandoned by idealps for being bastards and other children without parents.
Agalia- Aglaia is Prosym’s well mannered older sibling. They are very very smart attending Miletus themselves. The main difference b/w the siblings being their attitude. Aglaia is the perfect Idealpian. Shes intelligent cultured and very clan oriented. They and Agwe are prolly the most qualified of all of the politicians
India- India other than the “royal” family is one of the people on the younger side of this list. Shes from Los Corridos and has had a passion for making her home a better place from when she could remember. She loves music and started her political career as an attempt to expand Los Corridos’ influence on the islands. Thats what brought her to Nereus, where she met Ilias. The two liked each other enough and they started a family. It didnt work out despite them being very fond of each other and they both moved on. She had wanted to attend Miletus (which she did eat into) but instead she went to the desert university on Sweetfish, Ikaria. Now shes with Benita
Benita- a young lady from Aliria who was from a family a bit larger than average. As one of the middle out of many her parents didnt pay much attention to her so she had to learn how to do a lot on her own. She joined a pirate ship and quickly gained notoriety for her resourcefulness and her legends of saving her crew so she was an obvious choice for Ione
Agwe- similarly to Aglaia Agwe was also a talented young man who went to Miletus about the same time as Aglaia. Hed annoyed by the rest of the council minus Aglaia for no reason other than she does her job (he doesnt like her personally) and India who he has had a huge infatuation with. Otherwise he doesnt like the rest of the council and thinks they are dumb. His years in Idealps have heavily shaped him
Tajo- a very shy and reserved person on the team but he does his job. He and Ione were both raised with Nedite for a while. Hes very honor bond and takes pride in doing things the correct way. Hes not smart persay but anything you ask he will try to achieve
And Vea- Vea is very carefree and compared to the rest of the council the weak link. They very much exhibit the Amphinis way of pleasure, taking up many partners and having many children. They aren’t particularly intelligent, just well liked and thats kinda how they got their job, just by bein well liked

That's exactly what I was thinking about Damian. He's one of my favorites bc I feel like he has potential being Bruce and Talias kid (praying for a good writer) but I hate how they have him pick sides. I hate when he's like "I'm not an al Ghul I'm Robin" because like, he's both. He's always going to be both. His character could be the best part of his parents as a physical being. And any other time I feel like the al Ghuls are even that demonized in other adaptions, so many characters are like "oh I trained with the loa no biggie"
And I also feel that Ra's and Talia would love Damian. Everything about them now is just about child abuse. It wouldn't be far fetched for him to still have the sort of detachment that he has being raised in the loa but it's like at this point what even is the loa?
I also feel it's an underlying racist issue. Like Damian denying his (Arab? Non white side) because they're just so evil
exactly! there was so much potential to tell a story about a kid intimidated by the legacies he's heir to but nonetheless choosing to embrace both of them bc of what they meant for doing a duty to the greater world. and i truly do believe ra's and talia would have raised damian well esp if the obsession over immortality and building a perfect specimen hadn't been a thing. ra's was genuinely overjoyed when talia was pregnant in son of the demon and obv their rift began to grow deeper the more she grew apart from him in the aftermath of that book, but i feel like ra's was nonetheless someone who would have been sensible enough to not blame any of that on the child had he come into contact with him. imo it would have been really interesting to explore a storyline where ra's found out about damian, snatched him up, and then raised him as he'd always wanted to raise a son: with a lot of encouragement, respect, and adoration. you could always tell ra's craved passing on what he'd learned and built to someone he genuinely had faith in and how better to do that than with his own grandchild? you wouldn't even have to pretend it was a perfect, wholesome situation bc there would still be implications with ra's raising the child without revealing the truth of his whereabouts or existence to talia and bruce. like how would damian finding out about the real reasons he's never met his parents before impact this relationship he starts to build with his grandfather? how would those lies and the nonetheless very genuine love behind them impact him as a child who has started to wonder where he came from? there were so many ways to explore damian as a character while still maintaining respect for the al ghuls' integrity and their flaws. writers just didn't care enough to actually research or think about any of it

i think prince harry and meghan markle are my favorite celebrities right now bc tbf they both seem like huge narcissists in the exact same way like the harry was raised in the most famous royal family in the world and meghan was a c-list tv star who mainly did influencer stuff and these respective circumstances produced the same genre of human which makes it like weirdly kind of romantic that they found each other. but also it is like illuminating on a cultural level bc it rly lays bare the royal family for the reality tv star celebrities they’ve actually been for the past century. esp bc they did that netflix series and harry published a ghostwritten trashy self-serious memoir (as all good celebrities do!) and the whole family went up in flames over it and then the queen died and left the throne to her son and his former mistress that got exposed in the tabloids for having phone sex in the 90s…..very iconic sequence of events imo. not even including prince andrew in that whole mess bc it’s not rly funny like he can choke lol. but also even setting aside all the shit they got from the daily mail and whatever i also do 100000% believe meghan markle when she says the royal family was racist to her because ppl in those echelons operate on levels of racism that is genuinely unfathomable to normal people in the US like inbred aristocratic weirdos like that will still earnestly use slurs against like. italians. idk if she was even trying to do all that but like….she secured the bag and that whole family crumbled before her….and now neither her or harry want to actually work like they couldn’t even be bothered to do a podcast like once a month after spotify paid them like $1000000000 dollars in advance. that’s very iconic and hilarious behavior and that’s exactly what i want and demand from celebrities in this day and age

I’m probably risking something with this ask, but I can’t help but wonder. What do you think of the ship ideas of Rome X Persia and Ancient Greece X Ancient Egypt?

Settling In: Family Dinner
Inspired by @i-cant-sing
If there was any word to describe the past week, you would choose quiet.  A schedule was set for your time spent here and rarely it would deviate. Rei would wake you up to watch the sunrise with you and  you’d get ready for the day with her. The outfit she chooses always sits on the bed waiting for you while she does your hair. Mornings are spent in either the sun room or the library, with Rei always watching. Though, she leaves to cook. She always left you to cook. If nobody else was home, that means you’d be left alone. Fuyumi would come by for dinner some nights and take your afternoons. Enji wasn’t home during the day, but joined you all for dinner every night before you could retire to your new room. Even if the schedule is slightly smothering, it’s easy to keep up with.
There were no chores or responsibilities for you to do, unlike your old homes. It was relaxing—too relaxing. There was no stress, so you created some. Tonight, instead of Rei, Enji, and maybe Fuyumi, the other two Todoroki children were coming over. You don't know what to expect, so you stress over it.
Fuyumi warned you that they weren’t as accepting as she was, that they weren’t as involved with the family as she was. You don’t want to make a terrible first impression. You don’t want your new siblings to hate you.
Fuyumi comes home earlier than her siblings, coming immediately home from work. Meetings, she says, that’s why she couldn’t have come sooner. You remember that she’s a school teacher. It’s easy to imagine what those meetings are about. Though, she doesn’t give you time to daydream about her, as she’s asking you questions.
“So Y/N, you’ve been here a week? Have you been enjoying your time here?” Fuyumi does your hair, extremely careful not to hurt you. She’s taken this responsibility from Rei for today. Rei’s been busy at the store and in the kitchen all day, leaving you with Fuyumi. You don’t mind that; she’s nice.
“It’s quiet.” You don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing, but it’s the truth.
Fuyumi takes it well, “That’s good. Mom picked out some good books for you, did she?”
The library in the Todoroki estate may be massive, but most of those books Rei says are too mature for you. She’s regulated you to books below your reading level. They’re for children younger than you. But she doesn’t like to watch television and the laptop they’ve provided has only been gathering dust.
“If I’m honest, they’re a little boring.”
Fuyumi chuckles, “She’s a little out of touch from reality at times. I’ll grab you some books you’ll probably like better. I used to do a lot of reading when I was your age.”
“What’d you read?”
“Romance, mostly.” Fuyumi admits, “occasionally fantasy. I wasn’t trying to read anything too dark and neither should you.”
Too dark. Too mature. You wonder where that threshold is for them. You suspect it’s a lot higher than most people’s standards. You don’t dwell on this thought too much longer. Finding faults in your caretaker’s lifestyle isn’t the best way to stay in their good graces.
“How was school this past year?” She rests both hands on your shoulders. She’s done with your hair, but she isn't letting you go. You could probably move her to get out, but there’s no need. Fuyumi is nice and interested in what you have to say. Why would you leave her?
“Alright.” You reply. Even if it isn’t the truth, you wouldn’t speak it, “Don’t know where I’m heading now, though. We’re too far from my old school.”
“Father mentioned Somei and Mom talked about homeschooling.” Fuyumi replies, “We’ll have to see which one concedes first.”
You can’t imagine Rei fighting Enji on anything, especially something as trivial as where to take you to school. Though, you’d prefer if she concedes. Homeschooling seems like a nightmare.
“Oh, alright.” You respond. There’s nothing else to say on the matter and you hope Fuyumi lets up soon because you don’t know what to talk about anymore. Almost like a savior, a knock is placed on your door. It isn’t as strong as Enji’s—Fuyumi and Rei don’t knock at all—so, you assume it’s one of the brothers.
Fuyumi calls out to the person on the other side for you, “Hold on!” She finally lets up to open the door. You fiddle with the edge of your dress. The tulle is a bit itchy, but the smooth, holographic hearts covering the entire dress provide a nice change of texture.
You look up to see a tall, white haired guy. He’s broad, built like Enji as opposed to Rei. Though, the rest of his features seem to come from her. He stands in the doorway looking at you, then back at Fuyumi—who’s back to holding you on your shoulders again, causing you to continue to sit still in the vanity’s stool.
He takes another look at you and your fingers fiddle with the dress more. He’s unnerving and hasn’t said a thing he walked in. You start to speak, but he looks up at Fuyumi and asks, “What kind of quirk bullshit has justified this?”
That’s not what you expected.
You think to object, no quirk stuff has happened here—at least, that you know of. Though, Fuyumi immediately comes to your defense, “Natsuo! You can’t just ask something like that! Have some respect.”
“Do you really expect there isn’t an ulterior motive behind this.” Natsuo replies, “You know how he is with quirks.”
“He’s gotten better!”
“Prove it.”
“Uhhh, Natsuo, sir.” You break up the siblings' argument, “No quirk stuff has happened, really.”
He grabs a hold of your arm, looking at it thoroughly before heading to the next one. You don’t know what he’s looking for. Bruises? Burns? Scars? You have none of them from your time here.
You wouldn’t have anything quirk related anyways—you’re quirkless.
“Is this the lie he’s told you to say?” Natsuo asks, “You aren’t going to be able to lie. I see through his bullshit.”
“Natsuo!”
You want this conversation to end. Natsuo’s and Fuyumi’s hands are both icy cold and you don’t like the attention. Plus their argument is painful to listen too, especially considering it’s about you.
“Natsuo, sir…” You say, “there’s no quirk… anything. Really! I don’t have a... quirk.”
He lets go of your arm and it drops to your side. He stands up again. Fuyumi lets your shoulders go, moving to your side.
“Hey, chin up kiddo!” Fuyumi replies, smiling her everbright smile, “there’s nothing wrong with that!”
You didn’t even realize you were staring at the ground, but your feet soon come into view through watery eyes. Fuyumi’s fingers wipe away the tear that slips through.
“Hey, sorry kid.” Natsuo’s hands are in the pocket of his jeans and his shoulders are raised, “I have the habit of assuming the worst.”
“It’s fine.” You reply, laughing through the soft tears, “I should be over it by now, anyways.”
“Let’s head out of here.” Fuyumi takes your hand, leading you out of your room, “Father should be bringing Sho home soon. He’ll just love you, he won't be able not to."
Despite the ominous nature of Fuyumi’s statement, you let yourself willingly be led to the living room. Besides, where else would you go, anyways?
___
Gratefully, the three of you leave your room. The room was getting tense between the sibling pair. You don’t want to be the reason they fight, do you? They always look so close in the photos on the wall—even if nobody looks happy in those photos.
Natsuo leads the way. He walks with his shoulders back and his head held high. He has confidence, something you’ve started to lack now that you’re around all these powerful quirk users. You feel the cool air radiating from in between him and Fuyumi. She walks right behind you. If you stopped, she’d crash right into her.
But you don’t stop. You walk down the hallway and head towards the living room. There, two figures step in through the door. The first is the boy with half red hair, half white hair. The photos on the wall show him to be significantly younger and without the bright red scar covering one eye. He wears U.A.’s school uniform. One of the old children in your last home went there as well. The other person is Enji. He’s in his hero uniform still—flames and all.
Before anyone can say anything, Natsuo speaks up, “Father’s not using her. I already asked. She’s quirkless.”
He doesn’t say it in a negative way, but him bringing it up at all stings. You’re inadequate compared to them. They all scream of powerful quirks, but you don’t even have a quirk to begin with.
And now, you’re getting the suspicion that quirks are what this family truly cares about. Which leaves you in a terrible position—quirkless, surrounded by powerhouses.
“Alright.” Shoto deadpans, then slips his shoes and coat off. A cool wind blows in from outside, but it’s no different than standing between the cold Todoroki children.
Enji asks his sons, “Do you really think so low of me?”
“Yes.” Natsuo and Shoto reply instantly.
Luckily, Rei comes to your rescue, guiding you to a seat at the kitchen table. Whilst they talked, she set everyone’s plates wordlessly. She cooked this meal for everyone and you feel a slight pang of guilt, knowing that six mouths is a lot to cook for. You had smaller homes than that, which sometimes saw it too tiring to cook for their size. And Rei cooked a lot—much more than she’s cooked for the other meals you’ve had here.
Your plate is filled. You can’t imagine that you’ll eat all of this, but you’ll eat as much as you can. You wouldn’t want to make Rei sad, now would you?
“Thank you Rei, for dinner.” You reply, before taking a bite. As you sigh in pleasure, Rei’s other children echo their thanks. The food is so good that you block out all sound in order to focus upon it.
“Y/N, are you there?” Fuyumi jokes from her seat beside you.
“Oh! Uh, yeah.” You exclaim, then ask, “Did you need something?”
“Father just asked how your day was.” Fuyumi replies.
You tell him, “It was good.” He sits at the head of the table, just like last time. You don’t sit next to him, Fuyumi does. You sit directly one seat to the left than the seat you’ve been sitting in. You don’t mind, especially because to the other side of you is the one brother you’ve barely heard speak: Shoto.
He looks at you—he’s watching you. You can see him do it out of the corner of your eye. It’s unnerving to say the least. But you put your head down and continue eating, making sure to pay attention. Luckily, they don’t ask you too many questions. Most of the attention is on Shoto and Natsuo. They’ve returned home—the family all together, Rei calls it. You don’t ask about the other boy in the photos. He’s obviously not a part of the family anymore.
“May I be excused?” You ask as soon as you're finished eating, not keen to just sit there and listen to their conversations.
Enji doesn’t hold you back this time, giving you a silent nod. You take your plate to the kitchen and then head to your room, making sure not to bother them anymore. You don’t want to be seen as a bother anymore than you already are, do you?

ok i have to say one more thinkpiece i do agree the show is very realistic and all the actors are amazing and the cinematography and everything is mwah delicious the super long still shots of them the montages the way they just let the actors act like normal people and u can feeeeeel the tension leading up to the breakup in every episode but the thing that pisses me off is the way they handle jinah and junhuis arguments it’s like she does something to hurt him where i can understand where she may be coming from but communication is actually so simple and then he’s hurt and she plays her way out of it like he has no right to be mad and she plays cute so he’ll give in but props to jung haein bc u can seeeeeee the way it’s building up in junhui that he can’t do it anymore esp when she gets his dad involved and he finally snaps and even then he’s trying his best to be respectful and she finds a way to turn it on him while also calling him immature when this is a man who had to be mature his entire life who had to grow up super early and care for himself and help care for his sister bc they were all each other had and he couldn’t afford to be immature bc he was being raised by his sister alone and this woman who’s been there through it all calling him immature and a child? isn’t this the one thing he’s allowed to be immature about? and i don’t really think not wanting a relationship with your absent deadbeat dad is very immature … and i understand he just kind of wanted to go to america without consulting her and that’s a little eeeeee no but i can understand him more in that situation than her when he’s been constantly beaten and belittled by her parents the whole way after they claimed to love him as a son and then he knows she’s getting the same treatment at home alone so i don’t think running away as a solution is super far out of the stratosphere for valid ideas and i get why he just left when she said no bc she’s obviously not fighting for their relationship at this point especially after the conversation she had with gyeongseon and i think if they absolutely had to end up together that finale was not the way to do it the whole finale was them getting closure and moving on and then all of a sudden he hears that voicemail and can’t live without her and the last 5 minutes of the finale they reunite? but these issues in their relationship are not going to go away it’s going to be the same issues and i think she gained freedom and a little bit of a backbone but i don’t think she necessarily had the biggest character development and i honestly think the best character development for both of them him especially would’ve been a clean permanent separation but i love the way the show makes it feel like you’re watching your friend in a relationship that slowly starts to fall apart and u stop rooting for them and want them so badly just to break up but u know they can’t do that bc they’re so in love and can’t see past it i think they do that 100% right
