Ernst Josephson (April 16, 1851 - 1906) was an ambitious Swedish artist and poet. He famously declared his intention to become the “Swedish Rembrandt”, or die trying.
After graduating from the Royal Swedish Academy he traveled through Europe copying the masters and plying his trade. He acquired syphilis along the way and gradually became mentally afflicted as the disease progressed. He was committed in 1888 to a mental hospital in Uppsala, and afterwards lived confined under care in Stockholm.

Carl Emmerik Skånberg (12 June 1850 - 24 January 1883) was a Swedish painter. Despite a serious illness that caused him a great deal of suffering, he was a prolific painter and one of the first artists in Sweden to be influenced by Impressionism.
