THW Rewrite

More headcannons because I have not been able to stop thinking about this franchise for the past 13 years, and I have over a decade's worth of opinions.

I've already posted some of these ideas but ehh it's fine.

While I enjoyed watching it for the first time, THW was disappointing to me for a variety of reasons. (The music was probably the best out the franchise though, I'll say that) Grimmel didn't reach his full villain potential since the writers used Ruffnut's lack of judgment as his key to success instead of him being a capable strategist. (Also they did my girl so dirty. She may be a dumbass, but she's not an idiot!) I don't like that the dragons left after just 6 years. I don't like that all the riders except for Hiccup and Astrid are just played for laughs instead of shining like they do in RTTE. I don't like whatever the hell Snotlout's obsession with Valka was, and I didn't like Toothless' "romance" with the Light Fury. I hate that even dragons can't escape half-developed romance and a nuclear family as the ultimate character accomplishment.

So here are my edits (looking back, there's quite a bit going on, so it may need to be split into 2 movies or a short TV series)

The time jump happens between movies 2 and 3. (I want a full movie with bearded Hiccup and "Homecoming" does NOT count) 10-15 years have passed, so the riders are about 30-35. Zephyr and Nuffink are either little kids or preteens and are getting to an age where they're starting to train dragons.

Astrid is more rough around the edges like she was in HTTYD 1 and Rob/Dob/RTTE, not just Hiccup's supportive gf/wife. Instead of making her softer, motherhood has made her fiercer because she has more people to protect. Hiccup on the other hand is a doting father and can't say no to the kids if they give him puppy dog eyes: heart melted every time.

Toothless finds his original flock(?)/herd?/murder?/unkindness?/parliament? of Night Furies instead of just one "soulmate". Each can have their own personalities and roles in the group while Toothless is the baby. I think it would be interesting if, like Hiccup, Toothless was quite small compared to his peers - potentially explaining why he was on his own and got separated from the group before meeting Hiccup.

Dagur and Heather are brought into a council meeting as Berserker allies. Hiccup greets them in a way that clarifies things for audience members who haven't watched the show. I suppose Mala would also be in it too. I don't dislike Mala but I hate her and Dagur's relationship. More development needed there.

Gustav should be there too, still very much trying to prove himself as a dragon rider and occasionally messing things up.

In terms of the main plot and villains, I'm not too picky, although I've said before that I'm tired of dragon mind-control being the main villain tool. I'm fine with it if Drago comes back as the villain, but if not, the villain should just be dragon hunters or rival dragon riders who use their dragons for conquering/raiding other settlements.

It can hit pretty much hit the same story beats as before but with better character dynamics.

Make Ruff and Tuff more instrumental to mischief and redirection in a way that helps the plot.

Give Fishlegs more credit for his discoveries and record-keeping about dragons.

Snotlout and Eret are together (or implied to be together if that's the best we can get). Snotlout is also no longer Hiccup's rival - he should be his second in command. They can disagree from time to time, but ultimately, his loyalty is not in question.

Fishlegs and Ruffnut have kids who cause chaos with Zephyr and Nuffink.

It would be cool to include a couple characters from other parts of the world with dragon mythology. I understand that Vikings are white but if we have goddamn flying dragons, there's no reason there can't be visitors from other cultures (who aren't villains).

Ending option 1: The movie can end with the dragons going away, but now they've been with the Berkians for over a decade and it just feels more impactful.

The "there were dragons when I was a boy" line can either be Hiccup talking to his grandson after an even longer time jump, or Nuffink talking to his own kids about Hiccup's adventures.

Ending 2: the Berkians go to The Hidden World with the dragons. Hiccup writes a memoir to leave behind. We hear him reading from it at the beginning and assume that means dragons are going to leave, but it's actually a diversion to make people think dragons are gone so no one tries to look for them.

Ending 3: We accept that HTYYD takes place in a different world so we don't have to explain why dragons don't live among us anymore. The movie ends with Hiccup vowing to make the archipelago safe for all dragons and Nuffink and Zephyr take up the mantle of discovering new dragons. The dragons stay and they all live happily ever after, the end :)

I'm tempted to actually write this as a fanfiction but I already got a lot of writing projects atm. We shall see.

Dream SMP however it's the Twisted Boys doing the roleplay.

They were recording it because why not and did not expect the popularity it would get.

Yuu is Wilbur. Especially with the cursed lore. There have been many attempts to get them to stop. They all failed.

Riddle basically has Bad's roleplay role and is quite proud of The Egg Arc.

Ace is Tommy and Epel is Dream. Deuce is Tubbo. Sebeck is Sapnap. And Jack is George because he's not that into the heavy stuff.

You chose who everyone else is essentially playing as. Just wanted to share this.

I actually have like a few pages in a notebook about this. The cast list goes as follows:

Dream: Lilia (Mainly because Diasomnia is a strong af group and they do fit the “intimidating enemies” vibe.)

George: Malleus (Mainly because of King George in that one arc, plus with the lore of Dream and George being very close during that time. Though Jade takes George’s role during the Manberg/Pogtopia arc)

Sapnap: Silver (I find it funny that Silver, who is calm and also really low energy, is Sapnap, who has very high energy.)

Tommy: Ace (Come on, it’s obvious. Those two would be friends if Tommy traveled to Twisted Wonderland)

Tubbo: Deuce (Also very obvious. Tommy and Tubbo are a duo as much as Ace and Deuce.)

Wilbur: Epel (MMMMMM, Epel going batshit insane is a)

Fundy: Jack (...furry-) (No actually I think it’d be really cool for Jack, who has a strong moral compass betray his own morals just to keep up a spy act.)

Eret: Sebek (HAHAHHAHAHAHA, IT FITS BECAUSE SEBEK WOULD TOTALLY BETRAY THEM FOR LILIA AND MALLEUS)

Anyways, even if this is my general idea, your idea sounds amazing! I’ve written a lot of other DreamSMP inspired ideas on my blog, involving Yuu, Rook, and Jamil being Tubbo, Techno, and Eret on their way to beat up Crowley (Sam) for taking Grim (Micheal). There was also another time where I wrote Tubbo’s Checkmate scene with our classic quartet.

I like your castings, though! I totally agree that Yuu would be the one to make up cursed lore (”I gave birth to Grim, he’s my son, and his other parent is a tree!”) I also like Riddle being BBH, which means Trey would probably be Skeppy, and WHOOO BOY THE ANGST. Thinking about Sebek as Sapnap does make sense, and I could totally see him and Ace fighting early in the SMP. Though, idk about Jack being Gogy, since George basically sleeps a lot, which I don’t see Jack doing at all.

Anyways, that’s just my cup of tea. I really like this idea tho! :0

I feel like movie 3 Snotlout is overhated

Most people don't like the fact that he was "flirting" with Valka but I personally didn't interpret it as flirting at all. He's shown throughout the franchise to have a tendency of trying to impress people he looks up to or respects (we've seen this with Thor Bonecrusher, his father, Hiccup, Stoick on occasion, and Dagur) so I think it'd be perfectly in character for him to try and impress Valka because he just thinks she's cool. This also lines up with the deleted scene where Valka saves him after he gets his cape caught on a cage and the scene where she defeats Spitelout in arm wrestling. Nothing he said was inherently flirtatious either he even said "I'm like the son she always wanted"

And then there's the "who died and made you chief" (which I personally found hilarious 💀) he didn't have any malicious intent or anything he just said it without thinking like a dumbass and you could argue that him being THAT dumb is out of character but yeah

His semi one-sided rivalry with Eret was one of my favorite things in the movie

He's dripped out in this movie too so that's a reason to love him

Hello! I was wondering if you have any writing tips on balancing an intense plot with humor? I have a story I’m working on and the overarching themes are pretty dark, but I want the narrative to still feel wholesome and have some funny moments without them seeming out of place. Thank you!!

So the strongest, most consistent humour for me is always character based! It's why certain stuff can walk a line between light and dark tones while feeling very natural (think ATLA, a Series of Unfortunate events which can be quite absurdist) and why other stuff can fall flatter, because it doesn't seem to fit the world or circumstances and the tone is a bit all over the place (that was one of the big issues I personally had with She Ra).

For a smaller example, it's also why I think the first How To Train Your Dragon movie has the best humour of the three. Every joke is character based, much of it is very sarcastic and dry (which fits the main protagonist's voice well) and the movie never holds on any given joke for too long, so even if it doesn't land, it still reads well as a moment of just pure characterization. The other two films were more "jokes for the sake of joking" which, while still carried well, are less funny on rewatches (Ruffnut drooling over Eret is her only joke in the film, for example, just on repeat) and only tell us one character beat at any given time.

For darker storylines, I think juxtaposition and deapan could be your best tools. For ex: when written well, an optimistic character who mindlessly cheers forward can be very funny (Brett from "Inside Job" on Netflix comes to mind). Cue seeing some dangerous creature and this dumbass going, with pure sincerity > fear based hope, "Maybe it's friendly!"

Deadpan snarkers can also pave the way for dry wit and sarcasm, which lends itself well to more serious situations. It lets you have levity without breaking the tone / theme. I have two main deadpan snarkers in my core cast of seven, so here's a couple of my favourite little snippets:

Ally looked away and spotted Jamie standing by the lounge chair. “Remind me to never listen to you again.” "Wouldn't that defeat the purpose?" Jamie replied, unimpressed.

aka dead pan snarker 1 and then dead pan snarker 2

“Relax,” she spoke out of the corner of her mouth. “They don’t take kindly to fear or weakness.” "We'll that's reassuring," Rayan said dryly as he hid behind Bill.

Observational humur, sarcastic quips, and much more await you in character based humour.

For study:

How often Sokka's sarcasm in Avatar: The Last Airbender is actually used to set up exposition (as he gets corrected a lot, especially in the early days)

Everything about Percy Jackson as a character voice - he's also pretty pessimistic about a lot of his situations, but never comes off as whiny, which is a delicate balance to achieve as well.

A lot of his character voice relies on a conversational omission where he tells us things without it feeling like he tells us things, a la "Am I a troubled kid? Yeah, you could say that."

Most humour situations have a straight man (more skeptical, rational) and the every man (more ridiculous to play off each other). The skeptic reacts to the every man, and it can be particularly fun if/when these roles reverse. Also does not have to apply to men at all, but those are typically the short hand terms!

One last snippet as everyone loves a Peak Loveable Dumbass, too:

 “You’re coming into town with me.” "Oh—I'm not in trouble?" Dearborn arched one eyebrow. "Should you be?" "Right," Ally said. "Stupid question. Carry on."
