Accommodations make testing equitable.
I have memory problems, like major ones, cognitive glitches, and word recall issues.  I have a documented medical cause for this (more than one, actually).  Classes where I have to quickly memorize a TON of terms and information and locations of things are extremely difficult for me, no matter how much I study.  The Accessibility people tried to get accommodations for me that included a small index card with just the terms/words I thought I was likely to blank on, but the only one they were able to get for me is a little extra time.  My professor thinks that a small index card with just problematic terms on one side would be like cheating and give me an unfair advantage over the other students.  What he doesn't realize is that THEY have an unfair advantage over ME- they are much younger, healthier, and more neurotypical.  Their memories work properly.  Mine doesn't.  I have to study at least 3x as much as the others to remember stuff, and that takes a lot of time, and I have other demanding classes and responsibilities.  How do you get a professor to understand all this, though, and see that the testing is not equitable?

“alt text for more info” “turn on cations for more info” no actually this is not where more info goes. These have a very distinct purpose. There are plenty of other places for more info. If you’re going to make your post inaccessible, the least you could do is not use accessibility tools at your own leisure for whatever purpose you see fit.

In recent years, social justice issues, particularly those surrounding race, have come to the forefront of public discourse. As a result, individuals and organizations are looking for ways to make a positive impact and promote social justice values. One area where this impact can be made is through investing. Also known as social justice investing or racial equity investing, racial justice investing is a form of investing that promotes racial equality and the dismantling of systemic racism. Through responsible investing, individuals and organizations can use their financial resources to address social disparities and issues that disproportionately impact communities of color. The ultimate goal of these investments is to create a more equitable and just society.

tfw the NSF determines that i (a queer, nonbinary, AFAB, "low income" for my area, college student majoring in Civil Engineering) ... is Not A Minority! wow i'm so happy. really reminds me of how my college did not give me work-study, while every other school i got accepted into did.
resources and programs meant to empower underrepresented students and create a more equitable college process are still controlled by larger governing organizations and, as such, still possibly subjected to systemic oppression.
what can i say except to argue that my lived experience makes me a "minority," to argue that my experiences determine me eligible for some half-assed program? what can i give but anecdotal evidence? what can i fucking DO about this, but suffer through the system as best i can the way i always have?
there is no way to tally the engineering socials (from Engineering Student Council to American Society of Civil Engineers to Steel Bridge) that i've skipped because it would've cost a membership + a night out, the number of times i've walked into a male-dominated class and felt oddly stupid and talked over, the way it feels to be the only AFAB welding in a group of cishet guys. i'm not even technically a member of the club i spend 4-6 hours grinding / providing labor in every week (steel bridge) because i decided not to spend my precious money on membership this (freshman) year; a club where i'm lucky if i see another AFAB (typically 1 of 2 seniors); a club where the cishet men around me are kind and approachable and friendly and still all cishet men.
i am afraid to live authentically as myself, but i am not "eligible." because others have it worse than me, my own experience is invalidated through a quick run of demographic data through a database set up by the NSF. i am not the numbers i come with, but that is all these organizations see. it feels devastating.

This is Gilberto Filipe, who dominated the World Association for Working Equitation Qualifier in Segovia, Spain, in March 2024. I think this is his Lusitano stallion Iranio.
