BLACK SAILS REVIEW EPISODE 102 - II
WELL-FORMED THOUGHTS
The conversation between Flint, Eleanor, and Mr. Scott is the most important of the episode, the season, and perhaps even the entire show.  As such, I want to quote it in full!
Eleanor:  Why return at all to Nassau?  With money like that and my father out of business, why not run?  What’s coming our way can’t be outrun. Flint:  But with the money I strip from the Hulk, we could add fifty guns to the fort.  We could build ships to defend our shores and train new men to sail them. We could work the land, grow crops and raise cattle.  Then whoever arrives on our shores first, be it England or Spain, will be in for a most unwelcome surprise.  A nation of thieves. …You have your doubts? Mr. Scott:  Of turning pirates into farmers and soldiers?  Of fighting a war against Whitehall from a sliver in the Atlantic?  Doubt, Captain Flint, does not begin to describe how I am feeling. Flint:  They’re not animals, Mr. Scott.  They’re men starved of hope.  Give that back to them, who’s to say what could happen? Eleanor:  Why do this?  Why here? Flint:  Odysseus, on his journey home to Ithaca, was visited by a ghost.  The ghost tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order, he must do one last thing before he can rest.  The ghost tells him to pick up an oar and walk inland and keep walking until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel, for that would be the place that no man had ever been troubled by the sea.  And that’s where he’d find peace.  In the end, that’s all I want.  To walk away from the sea and find some peace.
This is the moment when Flint gets Eleanor on board with his plan for a stronger, securer Nassau.  A Nassau so strong and secure that pirates can settle down and become farmers.  All Flint wants is to be free enough and secure enough that he can leave the sea behind him, and he assumes that everyone else feels the same way.  It will be fun to see whether or not he is correct!
I had a hard time believing that the pirates of these first few episodes weren’t animals and did, in fact, deserve Flint’s vision for them.  After all, in just this episode we see them pissing on corpses, beating prostitutes, and murdering innocent men.  I think we’re meant to have this visceral reaction to the crudeness of the pirates we’ve seen so far, because that is how “civilization” sees them.  It’s only as our story goes along and we get various characters’ backstories that we understand what pain, trauma, and abuse led them to a life of debauchery and cruelty.  A good reminder that first impressions are often only part of the story.
FRAGMENTED THOUGHTS
That’s a lot of nudity.  As I mentioned earlier, it still feels exploitative and cheap.
I would love to know more about the history of Flint and Vane’s rivalry!
I don’t know how to feel about Eleanor’s relationship with Max.  Apparently, she only recently split from Vane, so they can’t have been together long.  And can someone truly be together when one party is paying for the company of the other?  I do believe Max loves Eleanor, but I don’t really believe it’s fully reciprocated.
Silver is seriously so smart, both with his misdirection on the beach and with his memorizing the contents of the page.
Max is also so smart, making the evaluator inspect every single pearl.
Flint:  “I never much liked your father; too caught up in appearances.”  LOL, okay, James.
Silver:  “Do you have a candlestick or…perhaps a heavy shoe? Idelle:  *pulls out sword*
I think that might be our first hint that background prostitutes are also real people with lives and intelligence (and not just Max as the token Special Prostitute).  Also, hello Idelle!  I didn’t realize you were a part of the show since the beginning!
It’s only episode two and we already have lovers being torn apart by their own choices.  Friendly reminder that this show is a tragedy  This is one of my favorite things, though, that relationships are rarely broken because of outside influence or lack of interest, but because of fundamentally different worldviews and goals.  Far more nuanced and interesting!
Honestly, what even is Jack’s hair?
Ninja!Flint makes his first appearance when he goes to the house of a Mysterious Woman and collapses.  He’s so tired!  If I hadn’t already fallen in love with him before, I would now.  Nothing quite reaches my Female Id like a strong man showing weakness.

EpisodeReview: FEAR THE WALKING DEAD 3x05 (Spoilers)
Tumblr media
Season 3, Episode 5: “Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame”
Maddie joins Troy in search of the group responsible for killing Travis. Nick and Jeremiah get to know each other while Alicia and Jake get acquainted in a different way. Strand and Daniel go to the hotel to search for Ofelia.
A lot of good things happened in this episode but it’s become more apparent that our characters are settling down. Only time will tell if this is a good for Fear, considering we’re used to watching everyone travel from place to place. As it stands, tensions are beginning to rise as it seems that the Clarks’ new home might be in danger. But most of the episode focused on life on the ranch.
Character Commentary
Maddie & Troy
Troy’s mission to find missing community members is the only part of the episode that added to the overall plot. On their excursion, Maddie was able to prove her combat abilities but they weren’t enough to defend against a rival group from revealing itself. We’ve yet to learn all the details but the rival group is lead by a young Native-American man claiming that the land that the ranch occupies belongs to him.
Tumblr media
This sounds like something Jeremiah has been dealing with since before the apocalypse, but this is now Maddie’s fight since this group is responsible for killing Travis and they threaten her family’s new home.
Nick & Jeremiah
Nick struggles with deciding to either stay with his family or leave with Luciana. While trying to earn his keep, Nick bonds with Jeremiah as he reminisces about family, the ranch, and they have a discussion about the “beauty” of guns.
It was strange having such a normal conversation, but it also managed to reaffirm the idea that in this new world, it’s not necessarily “Us versus them [walkers],” but other people. By the end of the episode, Luciana sneaks away and leaves the ranch to go back to Mexico. Will Nick go after her?
Alicia & Jake
Aside from establishing a romance between these two, I feel like their interactions served the purpose of discussing the value of art in this new world, specifically poetry and Charles Bukowski (hence the title of the episode).
Tumblr media
Strand & Salazar
Strand perpetuates his lie about Ofelia by taking Daniel back to the hotel. Their interactions are hostile but things escalate when they return to the hotel only to discover that it’s been overrun with walkers. Daniel deliberately gets the attention of a horde of walkers to finally get the truth out of Strand and decides to leave him for dead.
“Let’s see how you get out of this one!”
As resourceful as Strand is, can he fend for himself? Will Daniel return to the dam or continue to search for his daughter?
This episode certainly slowed things down and if I were to guess, this might be the trend for the next few episodes. Hopefully we get to see more action and fewer discussions about life, but who knows? Perhaps Fear can manage to make it more interesting than the regular Walking Dead series.

Chicago Fire (S05E22):"My Miracle"
Chicago Fire (S05E22):”My Miracle”
Wow. Just wow. This season finale feels far from a “finale,” as Chihards (Chicago fans) prepare to wait for the next season – morning the possible deaths of a handful of 51 firemen. To be completely honest, it is really hard for me to fathom more than one person dying since half of the cast of Chicago Fire is currently in question; getting rid of that many people would be detrimental to the show,…

Pretty Little Liars Review Season 7b Episode 2
Tumblr media
It’s finally here! The last half-season of PLL ever! I can’t wait to process all the ups, downs, zombie hallucinations, and body burying shenanigans with all my fellow PLL superfans.
First, let me introduce the new episode rating scale, starting at 1 (the least impressive) and going through 5 (the most impressive). Each number has been assigned a corresponding PLL moment.
PLL Episode Rating Scale:
1: (Very Bad) Charlotte’s Holographic, Tactile, Wall Street Investor Panel
2: (Bad and a Little Pathetic) Drunken Ezra Getting Thrown out of the Radley after one too many Pink Drinks
3: (Mildly Pleasant) A Pair of Shay Mitchell Sunnies
4: (Ooo So Good) Season One Instagram-Filtered Ezria Drama
Tumblr media
5: (WTF this show is Awesome) Aria Twisting a Doll Baby’s Head the Wrong Way
Episode Rating: 2
Thoughts:
1: Apparently the writers want us to forget that Spaleb ever happened.
Tumblr media
I know I was one of the few fans eager to toss out Haleb for this sexy five-years-forward twist, but the writers are proceeding as if this major plot point never happened. Shots of Hannah and Caleb waking up in bed together and Caleb’s oh-so-husky support of Hannah’s budding fashion career is not enough to erase Spaleb’s sex-brunches. Also, last time I checked, Hannah was apologizing for kissing Spencer’s boyfriend and lying that she was okay with their new relationship. Flash forward to 7b, and Hannah is the angriest with Spencer for playing AD’s whirring, meta board game. “I may have been the one driving the car that killed Rollins, but we are all in this together.” Really, Hannah? Really?
2: Emily v. Addison is Problematic In at Least Two Ways
Tumblr media
Falsely accusing lesbian and gay professionals of inappropriate behavior is a longtime tool of homophobes, and these accusations against Emily are no different. However, there is another aspect of this storyline that I find very troubling. Many, many times the young victims of sexual assault are doubted and dismissed by the adults around them. Yes, I know Addison made up these accusations, but this storyline affirms the idea that teenage students are quick to throw fake accusations against faculty. From my personal experience, and those of many I know, teachers (usually males in power) are often inappropriate and manipulative to young male and female students. What stops these students from speaking up? Fear that they will not be taken seriously. Honestly, I’m angry the PLL writers went this direction. It’s a lazy, problematic plotline that hurts Addison Derringer’s otherwise impressive performance. And let’s not forget the years Ezra Fitz manipulated Aria, using his position of power to date and stalk his student without any repercussions.
Phew… rant over.
3: Holden + Aria = Happy Face. Holden’s Advice about Ezria = Sad Face
Tumblr media
I’ve actually really enjoyed the return of the karate kid Holden. He is a fun foil for Aria’s flirtations with her murderous, alter ego. (She was definitely going to kill Nicole with that salt water taffy, right?) That being said, why oh why is he giving his former English teacher a pass? It’s almost like he’s feeding Aria exactly what she wants to hear. Every time her devotion to Ezra is wavering, he’s there to present some weighty/confusing metaphor about the time it takes diamonds to form. Come on, Holden - can’t you just take the place of Liam? (I miss his scathing takes on Ezra the Predator).
4: Is Paige a Supportive Ex, or a Crazy-Eyed Stalker?
Tumblr media
Paige is on her fifth or sixth personality in this show. In 7a, her earnest devotion and semi-aggressive PDA was enough to make me cringe. Now? In the tortuous Emily - Allison - Paige love triangle, she is the most level-headed. Next to Emily, Paige looks like a sane, professional Rosewood High faculty member with a firm understanding of what is and what is not appropriate. Is this sudden increase in confidence and capability because Paige has joined forces with A.D.? Or because she is A.D. herself?
5: Mona is Making Me Uneasy
Tumblr media
I love Mona, and I always will. I’m enjoying how hands-on she’s become with Hannah’s fashion career, but am I really supposed to believe Mona didn’t know Jenna was back in town before the rest of the girls? No. I refuse to accept it. Mona always knows what’s up before anyone else, but when Jenna showed up at the Brew in an almost-replica of Hannah’s lame black swan ballerina dress, she acted shocked. Sure, her sass with Hannah and the Jenna-thing was a blessed thing to behold, but I can’t help wondering if she knows more than she’s letting on.
6: Why is Spencer Boring Now?
Tumblr media
I don’t have much to say about this one. Spencer’s normal shenanigans have been downgraded to going to the *gulp* Rosewood police for help in finding her birth mother/vampire, Mary Drake. Spencer as Mary’s daughter was a fun twist, but I’m kind of over it. I want Spencer to get back to her sleuthing, manic self.
7: Hannah is Brutally Attacked by Sentient Shoes
Not only was this scene almost too dark (visibly) and bizarre to comprehend, it was also boring.
8: I Miss Young Caleb
Tumblr media
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Caleb was always a little too perfect for my taste, but this five-years-forward Caleb is a huge disappointment. His days are spent as follows: 1. Wake up sexy and shirtless next to one of the liars 2.Say something ridiculous about how amazing said partner is while assuring them that stealing a dress design is a good idea 3. Go out to lunch for fuel after a night of sexy sex 4.Threaten women with a throaty voice and 5.Grab blind women’s walking sticks. (There might be some light-to-no-hacking in there, but I can’t be sure). I’m over it. The only way this character will be redeemed in my eyes is if he is A.D or working for A.D., and I don’t think that’s going to happen.
The Best
Runner Up: Aria
For being terrible to that geeky reporter and comparing her stature to a normal-sized kitchen knife.
Winner: Paige
Yes, I’m as surprised as you, but thanks to Emily’s bullying of a fifteen-year-old student, she was quite refreshing.
The Worst
Runner Up: The Rosewood Police and Marco
Why isn’t the police force already searching for Mary Drake? Isn’t she the lead suspect in Spencer’s shooting? Also, negative 100 points to Marco for telling Spencer she sounded “fragile” on the phone.
Winner: Emily
Oh dear. This was nothing short of a trainwreck. If bullying a teen and showing obvious and constant PDA is indicative of Emily’s maturity level, she should not be parking in that faculty lot.
PLL Recommendations:
Want some companion guides for your PLL watching? Look no further than Bros Watch PLL Too. I actually look forward to their three-hour line-by-line review podcasts more than the show itself.

Hi everybody! 🤗 My review of episode 11, ‘Bad Girl Mcguire’ of Lizzie Mcguire has just been posted to my Tumblr! ♡
Please note that this review is split into Part 1 and Part 2, which are both out now.
If you’re interested, please click on the link in my bio to gain access to all my episode reviews. I’ve done episodes 1 to 11 so far. ♡
Episode 11 wasn’t particularly my favorite because there wasn’t much I could takeaway and learn from its plot. And I felt that they could have done something to redeem the character of Angel Lieberman. But that’s just my opinion 🙂 ♡
