Smiffina Episodes - Episode 161

Eek, the last before the first live episode.

Gary's dad - who is also an informant - has been taken hostage by a very tired and psychotic Jules Ellis who has holed himself and Alan in a dilapidated building. At the same time, Polly's murder trial is going on and Adam can't be in two places at once so Gina has to be the decision maker.

Under Jules and Alan are an elderly couple who missed being evacuated. One is very poorly with the start of Alzheimers and the other, the husband, hasn't been heard from. Gina and SO19/CO19 plan a rescue of the couple which involves Smithy delivering bandages to Ellis once the couple are freed. Gina is worried - but Smithy reassures her that they'll be back before she knows it.❤

Of course, this is The Bill and things do not run smoothly here and so the obvious happens.

Smithy gets the officers to back off a little bit and offers himself as a hostage to the twitchy Ellis so that the old couple can get taken to hospital. Of course he does - that's our Super Sarge. 🤦‍♀️

Gina voices what we're all thinking: "What the hell does Smithy think he's doing?" "He's offered himself as a hostage." "He's doing WHAT?!"

Inside, Smithy's clearly having second thoughts when he's ordered to remove all police gear including his bullet proof vest. Ellis takes the vest for himself, but he's bleeding heavily from a wound on his arm.

The CO19 Sgt is furious at what Smithy has done, saying that he's given Ellis an exit strategy and has forced their hand. Ellis is erratic and claims that having Smithy means that the CO19 officers will have to leave which means he'll get space to think and get his head together. Smithy asks what he'll do next and Ellis explodes at him, demanding he shut up and keep quiet.

Sgt CO19 informs Gina his officers are on standby to go in as they don't believe Smithy will be able to talk him down. Gina refuses to let them do that whilst Smithy is in there. The Sgt insists he's in control of the scene, despite Gina being the senior officer and the one in command of the situation. "You will not go in there waving your gun about without my say so, Sergeant!" "He's got an hour. Then we're going in."

Ellis is paranoid that he could have been set up, having been made to do the job by his boss - a serious criminal that Gina and Jack have been after. Smithy tells him he doesn't have make his situation worse and that he could give up Alan Best. Ellis doesn't have Best as a hostage and Smithy realises that it's all been for nothing...he's held at gunpoint by an increasingly unstable Ellis and Alan Best is being held somewhere else.

Sgt Grouchy of CO19 is pissed at Gina for contacting Adam after his last hissyfit. He tells her his boss has made him pull back. Her concern is protecting Smithy.

Smithy tells Ellis he needs to contact Gina 'on a special frequency' and ask her to bring a car around. Ellis wants it to be bulletproof which Smithy says will need to be requisitioned from the Diplimatic Squad so it could take an hour or so. He promises that they can get in it and go wherever Ellis wants - but he needs to show his colleagues that he's unharmed and dress Ellis' arm. The phone rings and Smithy picks it up slowly and keeps repeating that they need to know he's ok despite Ellis telling him to put the phone down. You'd think the negotiator would hear that and feed it back - but no... all thats reported back is that he can't get hold of Ellis and 'it's not a good sign'. Terrified for Smithy, Gina tells Sgt Grumpy to get his troops ready.

Smithy grabs a chance to look out of the window with Ellis distracted and sees CO19 officers running towards the building. Ellis realises and makes him turn round and get on his knees. Smithy's panicking that he's about to get shot as a paranoid Ellis thinks he made a sign out of the window but Ellis makes him cuff himself to a bar and then backs away to tend to his arm - giving Smithy chance to catch his breath and calm himself down. Spotting tools, Smithy tries to stretch his fingertips to get one to try get free and arm himself but unfortunately it falls, alerting Ellis who rushes over and puts his gun to Smithy's head. Luckily Ellis has realised he can't tend to his wound himself so he unlocks Smithy to allow him to.

Ellis confesses that he lost control of the van he was driving when Alan jumped him and thats how he cut his arm. Smithy magically manages to fully wrap Ellis' wound in 5 seconds whilst wearing handcuffs AND make a bloody good job of it. Ellis hopes he's as good behind the wheel as they'll be being shot at. "I'm good enough."

Ellis allows him to contact the Inspector and Smithy reaches for his belt which he drops. He asks Ellis if he wants something for the pain. Ellis asks what he's got and Smithy pretends to bend down to pick it up, only to hit him round the head with his cuffs and wrestle him onto the settee. In the struggle the gun goes off, Gina flinches and looks on in horror and Sgt Grumpy gives the go go go to his team . Meanwhile Smithy manages to overpower Ellis and knock the gun out of his hand, punch him, stand up, pick him up and literally throw him at the armed officers who burst in - all whilst still wearing cuffs. Again. Super Sarge. "Ma'am, this is Smithy here... Suspect arrested and nobody's hurt." "Good boy!" Sgt Grumpy has a go at Smithy but he insists he thought it was the right decision - and Gina backs him up saying it was. "Don't make a habit of it, Smithy."*

Gina offers to let Smithy go home early but he prefers to stay, eyeballing Ellis as he's taken back to his cell. Ellis tries to attack Smithy but he overpowers him and demands to know where Alan is. Ellis refuses to help, spitting repeatedly that Smithy 'is dead'.

*But he does, Gina. He bloody does!

DNA Surgery

Surgery time! Time to fix your DNA! These three must be super tiny if they're going to do something as intricate as DNA surgery, if such a thing is even possible (or plausible). My main wish looking at this art is that these guys were drawn closer (/bigger). There's so much empty space at the top, especially above the two nurses!! Sure, you gotta get those operating room lights in there for an alien abduction examination type feel, but they don't necessarily need so much space to themselves. The framing of this scene is kinda wild too, if you really look at it. If you look close enough, the blonde nurse is holding onto the handle of what is most likely a hospital stretcher, which is somehow pointed towards the viewer without running into anything??? And this doctor guy is either mega tall or standing right on top of the viewer. I will say though, I love that his head mirror was drawn exactly the same way as his eyes, making him look like he has three eyes total. The nurses are drawn super cute though, and I especially like their black dot eyes. Part of me thinks that it's funny that, despite all the minor censoring they'll do, they didn't mess with the boobs on these blue elf ladies at all. Not even the blonde one who has more defined boobs.
