Subcutaneous Layer
The first layer below the cutaneous membrane is called the subcutaneous layer. It is also known as the hypodermis and superficial fascia. Although this layer helps stabilize the integumentary system and shares some characteristics, it is not technically a part of the integumentary system. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/21902-hypodermis-subcutaneous-tissue Within the subcutaneous…

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin and serves as the body's first line of defense against external threats such as bacteria, viruses, and damage from the environment. It functions to protect the body from harm by providing a barrier that prevents foreign substances from entering the body. Additionally, the epidermis plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature by controlling sweat production and protecting against excessive moisture loss. This skin layer also contains melanocytes, which are responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color and helps protect against harmful UV radiation from the sun. Furthermore, the epidermis is constantly renewing itself through a process called skin cell turnover. This process involves the shedding of dead skin cells and the production of new ones to maintain healthy skin. The epidermis is made up of several layers, with the outermost layer being the stratum corneum, which consists of flattened, dead skin cells that serve as a protective barrier against external factors. The deeper layers of the epidermis contain living cells that continuously divide and move towards the surface to replace the cells that are shed. In addition to its protective functions, the epidermis also plays a role in sensation, as it contains specialized nerve endings that allow us to feel touch, pressure, and temperature. These nerve endings help us navigate the world around us by providing feedback on our environment and allowing us to perceive sensations such as pain and pleasure.

If you think of the Earth as our mother, then the topsoil isn't anywhere near as thick as her skin. It's thinner than the first layer of her epidermis. If Mother Earth was a person, the topsoil would be thinner than a single cell on the outside of her body.

Following amplifying divisions of the meristemoid, the resulting SLGCs can differentiate into pavement cells, which are the most abundant cell type in the epidermis of a mature leaf, or they can divide asymmetrically (spacing divisions) to give rise to a secondary meristemoid.
