Blog: Almost 40.
I’ve never been one for posting particularly introspective blog entries publicly. It’s not that I don’t contemplate things, or even write about them, but for the most part those meandering musings are confined only to my phone’s notes app- my most used app behind Facebook. And on those rare occasions that I *do* publicly blog about them I usually keep it on a relatively superficial level as I don’t necessarily like opening up my mind (and insecurities) to strangers.
But I’m turning 40 in less than a month and I think this is the catalyst that’s prompted a lot more thought about things than I’d ordinarily give them. I’d always considered 40 old but, as I approach it, I don’t *feel* old. And my family and friends would be rather quick to point out I don’t act it either. I always thought by 40 I would be much further along in life than I am. That I’d have a good job, a nice husband, a nice house, kids, that whole suburban dream. But... I haven’t.
And I started thinking if I’m a ball of mixed emotions about turning 40 maybe there’s other women- and men for that matter- who are feeling the exact same way so perhaps if I’m to break my self imposed cocoon of privacy around my innermost thoughts now might be the perfect time to give it a shot. So, with that being said, here goes nothing...
Here’s the thing: I remember my Mum’s 40th. I had just turned 10. I was sitting outside with my cousins, all of similar ages, and we were making fun of what we considered to be the appalling music taste our respective parents had. I even remember the leather pants Mum was wearing. She claims to have forgotten them but I think she’s faking that despite her bad memory. It didn’t even occur to me for a millisecond that my 40th wouldn’t be spent in a similar fashion. I just assumed life would follow the same path most women’s lives had followed for generations (with one caveat- I was planning to be the first one to go to uni): I’d find a job, I’d find a husband, we’d buy a house with a white picket fence, and we’d have 2.5 kids and a dog. And that all of that would be well and truly achieved by the time I turned 40. Just like it had been for my mum, and her mum before her, and hers before her. It was just the way things went, you know?
And then life happened. There’s a line in “Beautiful Boy” one of the John Lennon songs that I love that says “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” and it couldn’t be any truer in the 21st century than It was when it was written in 1980. (It’s a cruel twist of fate that it was written not long before he died and released after his death.)
For me “life” was all about my health, or lack thereof. I’ve mentioned the back issues before and the many hospital visits, and the 70 plus back ops. In essence this put things on hold: work, getting a home of my own, finding a guy (hard when you are always in and out of hospital and have problems losing weight) and having kids. So as I approach 40 without those things I’m not necessarily looking forward to it the way many do. (Plus if I get one “over the hill” card the person giving it to me shall be in a body bag.)
One thing I noticed when researching this blog post was Google searches about turning 40 seemed to concentrate on two things: what your health would be like post 40 and life as a Mum. Well what about those of us who are single and childless? Are we invisible? This didn’t particularly help with my mixed emotions about this supposed great milestone.
And it seems I’m not alone. Dr. Nancy Oreilly wrote about women’s aging anxiety that regardless of how you feel towards turning 40 you’ll still do what everyone does at this juncture and take stock of your life thus far. Things like “what have you done with your life? Are you the person you intended to be and are you living the life you want?” (1.)
In Lisa Bono’s interview with author Glynnis MacNicol about her book “No one tells you this” for the Sydney Morning Herald about life as a single 40 year old woman MacNicol admits she approached her 40th with “so much dread and shame" because she didn't have what she was "supposed" to have - a husband and a kid or two.... (because) we don't understand how to talk about women's lives as fulfilling unless we incorporate babies or weddings.” (2.)
Meredith Goldberg, in her article about age being just a number posed the question that if indeed age was just a number why was she feeling so apprehensive? Was it because she felt “like (she) had not accomplished enough in (her) 40 years on earth?” (3.) After all she hadn’t gotten married, hadn’t had kids, didn’t have another advanced degree.
Interestingly studies over the last decade or so have shown that the start of middle age (which, much to my chagrin given my belief I’m still like a much younger woman, is considered to be 40) often correlates with the time when people are the least happy, have the lowest levels of life satisfaction and highest levels of anxiety. A study at the University of Warwick and Dartmouth College attributed this to the facts that at this stage “adults are often faced with the pressures of raising children and looking after aging parents while simultaneously dealing with mounting financial and career pressures.“ (4)
Is it all too late for me- and other women turning 40 without a child- though? This is one of the most common thoughts going round and round in my head as I approach 40. I mean we all know about the whole ticking biological clock right? Even when I was doing my first postrgrad degree at 24, working part time, still single, still living at home, I still thought well there’s plenty of time. At 28 when I was finishing with postgrad, working full time but still single I *still* thought well there’s still a fair bit of time. At 33 it changed to well I guess there’s still time if I get a bit of a hurry on now. And now, at 39, single and childless, I think well maybe it’s too late now.
In her article about turning 40 whilst single and childless Bethany Jenkins wrote that it’s not only common but practically universal for a woman to expect and long for children, “to bring new life into the world; to put her hand on her belly as her baby grows; to wonder whether the newborn will have her or her beloved’s eyes; to hear “mom” not as a word uttered by her own voice to her own mother but as a call from her child’s voice for her.” (5) MacNicol in her book echoes that saying “as women, we’re taught to expect our stories to turn to marriage and children at a certain point in time (namely, before 40.)” (6)
Robin Deutsch, a psychologist and associate professor at William James College in Newton also points out that women reaching 40 tend to be more confident, have more wisdom and make better choices. (4) (Does she even know me?) But when you really think about it the whole “life begins at 40” theory has some merit. Julia Child didn’t publish her first cookbook until she was almost 50. Vera Wang didn’t start her fashion career until 40.
The fact that these women have the same feelings surrounding turning 40 whilst single and childless gives me some comfort. There’s a quote from Jung that I remember from philosophy at uni. He said that life begins at 40 and until then you’re just doing research. And maybe I’ve got to look at the positives in my current circumstances? One big upside I see is freedom. I plan to travel and return to uni to study something I’m passionate about and it’s doubtful I could do this had my life taken that path I was so sure it would.
So does this mean that the formula that my mum and all my ancestors followed, that unsaid life plan of when to get married, buy a home and have kids, is a thing of the past? We know women have children later these days. In fact the median age for a first kid these days is 30.6 as per the ABS reports
From the 1950s to mid 1970s, the fertility rates of women aged 20–24 and 25–29 were patently higher than that of all other age groups. Since then, the fertility rates for women in their 20s have been steadily declining whilst rates of those aged in their 30s have mostly increased since the early 1980s. Since 2000, the fertility rate of women in their early 30s has been higher than all other groups. It’s not just that women are having babies later but also the birth rate has declined. In 1950 the birth rate was 23.124. Its predicted 2020 will be at 12.561. (ABS yearly reports.)
We know women have children later these days, preferring to be settled and to have done the things they thought they’d not be able to do after before becoming a parent. Compared to our mothers, our grandmothers and so on we have more choices and not every woman’s first goal in life is having a child. (8)
The differences between say baby boomers and millennials are striking. It’s not just the fact that they settle down later but there are also other factors that mean by the time we turn 40 we may not have all the things our ancestors have but there are other priorities we have. For instance more women go to university now than they did when my Mum was turning 40. And after spending the time, work and money to get a degree it’s only natural that it follows that they want to get more out of their careers. Whilst baby boomers are more driven by loyalty, often staying at the same company for years, millennials are more interested in achieving more, whether that’s at the same company or not. (9) My father, for example, worked for the same company his entire life. He could have gone to many others with the knowledge he’d accumulated but he liked his job and he was happy there so it didn’t even really occur to him in more than a passing thought.
Then you look at things like buying a home. It’s ironic given that pay has increased that millennials are putting home ownership off longer than previous generations. Whilst people of my parents generation were content with a “starter home” these days more and more first home buyers want a bigger home, with bigger and better appliances, closer to the city than the suburbs etc. Research has found that rather than jump straight into a mortgage millennials look at travel, and spending their pay on things like Ubers and Lyfts, coffee, gadgets, clothes, and live entertainment and sports. (9)
Marriage is also something we do later. Consider the fact that whilst almost “50% of baby boomers were married between the ages of 18 to 32... a mere 26% of millennials are married in the same age range.” (9)
The fact that so many other women have the same feelings surrounding turning 40 whilst single and childless gives me some comfort. There’s a quote from Jung that I remember from philosophy at uni. He said that life begins at 40 and until then you’re just doing research. And maybe I’ve got to look at the positives in my current circumstances? One big upside I see is freedom. In the next 12 months I plan to travel and return to uni to study something I’m passionate about and it’s doubtful I could do this had my life taken that path I was so sure it would.
In an article published on mindbodygreen.com the writer spoke about how well-meaning friends had been asking her did she not want to have kids, did she not want to get married, etc, and she was quick to say that this can actually be the “most celebrated time of your life (and to) consider yourself blessed and enjoy the freedom.” (10) She listed some of the things to celebrate about turning 40 whilst single and childless. Like me travel was up there on her list as was the time to Perdue your passions. She also mentioned “(the) opportunity to nurture your friendships and relationships with family...(and that) the dating pool is large in your 40’s (given) a large majority of our population is divorced... there are so many
social media dating sites and social events in every major city... (and) you know what you're looking for.” (10)
So maybe instead of worrying about why I’m not where I wanted to be turning 40, worrying that it’s too late, worrying that my friends are further along than I am, I should be embracing it. The future is mine. I’ve just got to find a way to embrace it.
Fatgirl.

Online shopping, more than just  cheap..
Walk through my local mall on a weekday, in outer suburban Sydney, and you’d think it had closed. Foot traffic is down but most alarming, is the ack of ‘buzz’ — the sound of people, trolleys, registers and money changing hands. In 2019 and Australia’s low-interest rate, low unemployment economy, people are keeping their wallets closed.
Where are the people?
The death of retail has been imminent since online shopping became the norm.  Niche stores would be swept aside by the internet’s low overheads and convenience, but I see something different.  At my local mall, it’s the fruit shops, cafes and food outlets that are closing. Businesses that depend on other businesses to bring customers to them.  That tells me traffic through the entire centre is down.
Why’s this matter?
In the suburbs, malls are more than just shopping. People meet for food and coffee and bump into each other for a chat. They’re today’s town square, a shared space for communities. They’re a place for first jobs, where people new or returning to the workforce would pack groceries or stock shelves.
People build new homes with access to shops, so they anchor residential investment. Their performance drives property sector investment returns.  Sydney is an urban sprawl of 50km in every direction, take shopping centres out of that picture, and you destabilise 4 million people.
Tumblr media
Online shopping - is there an upside?
Sure there’s an upside.   Retail stores weight inventories toward the middle and there’s an advantage in broader selection. Outliers on the tall or short side, people wanting unusual fashion or even items outside the season, are best served online.  And there’s always the cost factor.  A friend at the gym says online shopping is the key to her finding time for work, study, kids and exercise, and never paying full price for clothes and shoes again! That’s hard for time and cash poor customers to go past.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Greater selection
Time savings
Cost savings
Cons
Disappearing social spaces
Disappearing entry-level retail jobs
Property sector impacts
What would the disappearance of local retail stores mean to you and your community?

What is IELTS Course? | IELTS preparation online|IELTS Test Online
Tumblr media
IELTS Overview IELTS is owned and administered jointly by Cambridge University and IDP Australia. It is a universally accepted test of English ability. It is used for these main purposes:
University admission for overseas study – international students studying on English programme courses use IELTS to satisfy entrance requirements for English ability level. It is the preferred qualification (sometimes the only accepted qualification) for almost all UK universities and those in Australia, New Zealand and other European institutions offering English taught programmes (mainly Germany, Sweden & Netherlands, but also latterly Belgium and some eastern European countries). Many American universities and colleges will also accept IELTS.
Band 6.5 will usually grant direct entry to most courses at most establishments without the need to take a pre-sessional English course. Lower band scores can be used to get entry to or reduce the time of a pre-sessional course.
University admission for home study – in universities in SE Asia, China, Japan etc. IELTS is the accepted qualification for entry to degree courses that are taught in English (known as English or International Programme courses). Even if the institution has its own English test for admission almost all will accept IELTS instead (so students do not have to take several different tests if making multiple applications). IELTS can also give credits on some courses for English components included in the syllabus. Additionally, some English based courses have IELTS as a graduation requirement.
VISA requirements for UK; also for Australia, New Zealand and Canada – to satisfy language requirements (e.g. Canadian Language Benchmark)
Job applications – occasionally students take IELTS to help them get a better job or promotion (for example, Asian employees of international companies who want to work in English native-speaking countries rather than in their home country and earn a higher salary by so doing). The numbers here are much smaller than for university admission-Start course
IELTS components and Scoring System The test comprises 4 papers testing ability in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Grammar and vocabulary are not separately assessed but obviously are important and form part of the grading criteria for the writing and speaking elements. Each part of the test is given a score out of 9, known as the Band score.  These are averaged to give an overall band score. Required scores This varies by country, institution and course. The following is a guideline:
For most university courses in UK, or other native-speaking countries, the entrance requirement is usually band 6.5.
Most European or Asian universities accept 6.0 (but some will be higher)
Some prestigious institutions require 7.0 or 7.5 (depending on the course), e.g Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, King’s College
Some courses may have a higher requirement if the course has difficult language content or involve mainly writing; for example journalism, some law degree courses etc. In these cases the overall score may be higher (e.g. University of Sydney requires 7.0 for its international law masters course) or a specific score (usually writing) may have a higher minimum requirement (e.g. overall 6.5 with writing minimum 6.5)
Courses that are not language based, such as fashion, photography etc. may have a lower requirement, usually a half-band lower.
Typical students IELTS students fall into three broad categories:
Senior high school students aged 16 – 18 who wish to apply for undergraduate degree courses either at home or abroad.
Those wishing to apply for masters degree courses, usually abroad and usually in the 21+ age group. Most are early 20’s and recently graduated but some are later 20’s and have worked for a period after their bachelor degree.
Some older students 30+ who have decided to go back into education, usually for masters degrees (either abroad or occasionally on an English programme at a home university). This category is far smaller in percentage of students than the above.
Red Fox IELTS courses – who are they for? The average score attained by IELTS test-takers is 5.5. Consequently, most need to take at least two tests before they get the score required. Many under-prepare for the test and/or overestimate their own ability level and underestimate the difficulty level of the test. It is not designed to be easy because otherwise it would not be universally accepted by universities. The following is a guide to the courses offered and the pre-requirements that are advised. The Beginner course:
Entry level for beginners (as the name suggests)
Students who have taken the test already and scored 5.0 or lower
[If the above does not apply] students who have some ability in terms of basic sentence structure and who can talk about familiar topics but:
Note – students must have some ability (as above). For beginners to English (as opposed to IELTS beginners) a general English course specifically including grammar principles, is strongly recommended. There is some grammar included in the Beginner course but it is more of a review or “refresher” than substantive teaching.
The aim of the course is to build necessary skills to improve and increase the IELTS band score. It contains introductory elements to reading, speaking and writing. Upon completion of the course students should be able to score band 5.5.
have difficulty with more complex structures (e.g. consistent errors if attempting subordinate clauses) and which can interfere with meaning or understanding
who show only a limited range of vocabulary and/or have difficulty talking about unfamiliar topics
(in writing) show little awareness of style or collocation and/or fail to extend or support ideas
have difficulty with more complex structures (e.g. consistent errors if attempting subordinate clauses) and which can interfere with meaning or understanding
The Intermediate course:
Students who have taken the test already and scored 5.5 or 6.0 and need a minimum of 6.5
Students who have completed the beginner course [note – it is envisaged that most beginner level students will need to progress to the Intermediate course to get their required score)
[If the above does not apply] students who have a reasonable ability level but still have some limitations such as:
The aim of the course is to further develop all skills for all four parts of the test to the extent that the student can attain a band score of 6.5.
can use some complex structures with limited flexibility but still make numerous errors
can talk about familiar topics with some flexibility but have only mixed success at paraphrasing or expressing more complex ideas or talking about unfamiliar topics
(in writing) errors persist and are noticeable although meaning is reasonably clear and/or can present ideas with some organization and cohesion but do not demonstrate more fully developed argument and/or may overuse, underuse or make inappropriate use of cohesive devices and referencing.
can use some complex structures with limited flexibility but still make numerous errors
The Advanced course:
Students who need a higher level score (for courses with a 7.0 or 7.5 requirement or for personal satisfaction)
Students who have taken the test already and scored 6.0 or 6.5 overall but possibly struggle with some elements and want to extend their ability level to ensure success (for example, can get 6.5 overall but cannot push the writing or speaking beyond 5.5/6.0)
Students who have completed the intermediate course and need higher than 6.5
The aim of the course is to push the student to a higher command of the language, usually in writing and speaking (which has more of the course focus). The course includes writing with precision, speaking fluently and flexibly to confer precise meaning, and technique focused lessons. Students who complete the course should be able to attain band 7.0 or higher.

She’s the Boss: Yandy Smith on Motherhood, Mentorship, and the Biggest Lessons She Learned from Love & Hip Hop’s Mona Scott Young
Just a few days ago, the Fashion Bomb Daily team headed to Harlem to shoot one of Uptown’s finest, Yandy Smith. While most of us are familiar with the mother, entrepreneur, and reality star from her nine seasons on Love and Hip Hop New York, Smith actually began her career as an intern for Mona Scott Young at Violator Records. Yandy remembers, “I studied everything about how Mona ran her business and interacted with multiple business owners. She had Violator Records, Violator Management, she had a restaurant, and Mona was producing her first show on UPN 9 called the Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott. That was my first experience seeing a woman having multiple streams of income and juggling it all–and at the time she had two babies. Mona really helped shape my view on women bosses. I had never been around a woman who owned a company, was bossy, proud, and who earned her stripes on her own. She really helped me to see: If you want to make money in your sleep, you [have] to have several streams of income so that you can live the life you’ve worked hard for. That is definitely what I strive to do. “ Yandy does just that. In between takes on stoops in her old stomping ground, she took calls arranging pick ups for her kids Omere and Skylar, answered emails for her various business ventures including website and mentorship program Everything Girls Love and her new all natural plant based line Yelle Skincare, and checked in on her foster child, Infinity. Her relationship with Infinity began with mentorship, which is extremely important to her. She said, “There was a time when both of my parents were addicted to drugs. A lot of my development and growth came from people in my life who decided to help me out. One person in particular who helped change the trajectory of my life was Mickey Drexler, the former CEO of the GAP. He came to my high school one day, and I started a conversation. I was the first high school intern the GAP had at their corporate office. Then I got offered an internship in California in the summertime. Then I got a scholarship to Howard from the GAP. I would have never been able to afford Howard University. My mom and my dad, they didn’t really make any money. That was the first big change in my life. Everyone Mickey personally handpicked for me to work with had a huge influence on how I wanted to conduct myself in business. By the time I graduated school, I decided I didn’t want to work at the GAP in California. I came to New York and started interning for Mona Scott Young.” And the rest is history. Her tips for those just starting in the industry: “Find the need of the company. And it might be miniscule. When I started working with Mona, I started cleaning her office. I had graduated from Howard University with honors. But I saw that her office was a mess. I [called and] said, “Hi I’m Yandy, I need an internship.” They told me they weren’t looking for any interns at the time. I pretty much became a pest. I called and called, then showed up at the office and begged. And even though they said they weren’t looking for interns, I noticed that Mona’s office was a mess. I said, “You guys aren’t looking for interns, but she needs somebody to clean her office.” I came in, and I organized her CD’s and the papers on her desk, better than any other person probably organized her office in her life. And that is what became my career in the music business. Even though they didn’t need me, I was going to make them want me and need me. I was the first one to come into the office and a lot of times, I was the last one to leave. My job didn’t stop when the office hours were over at 7. I then would drop Mona home. If Mona needed me to cook dinner, I would cook dinner, if she needed me to help her with the kids, I would help her with the kids. I looked at my internship as a stepping stone to my next level in life. I told myself it was my grad school. I was making $100 a week doing all that, but from there, I went on tour with Missy, Beyonce, Tamia, Aaliyah, and Alicia Keys. That’s what got my foot on the ground and stabilized in the industry.” If you are entry level at a company, Yandy advises, “Come in ready to work. Be the best at whatever task large or small. Dress for the job you want, and not the job you have. Be professional. When you come in as an intern, it’s easy to think it’s not a real job or you can play around. [Take it seriously]. Don’t make friends with the artists. I came to work and I was about my business. I didn’t fraternize too much and I didn’t play. For women, especially in the music industry, there’s a magnifying glass on us because people want to think we are using our physical attributes to further ourselves. So I was very conscious of how I behaved with male artists and male counterparts. It’s sad that you have to think like that or do that. But for me, I was very conscious of that because I didn’t want anyone to think I got to where I was because of a romantic relationship I had with anyone. That was something that separated me from the women I worked with.” For our shoot, we aimed to reflect the multifaceted nature of a modern day business woman, with a throwback, retro vibe. This was a bit of a departure for Yandy, who says she’s never considered herself a fashionista. She says, “This is a dream for me. When I worked with Missy, I was constantly running around or sleeping on tour buses. I was a sweatpant and t-shirt kind of girl. I never wore makeup. I used to wrap my hair at night and comb in down. Now, I do a little more with my hair, I do a little bit more with my face, and I wear sparkles! It has been a transition. Now I love fashion. I love following your page, I love looking at magazines seeing what the latest styles are. I’m so in love with how [clothes] can set my mood. They can tell you how I’m feeling and they can even change my mood. I can put on a different outfit and I can feel so sexy. I can put on a bossy outfit, and I’m walking down the street, like I’m a STRAIGHT BOSS, you better act like it. But I never knew this. When I was running around on tour or even in college, [I wore] sweats, t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. I feel so liberated when I can put on an outfit and become [a Glamazon].” Now that Yandy is a certified glamazon and a public figure, she has decided to take an unconventional turn: use her platform to effect change. She offers, “I never set out to be famous. I never thought I had the look or the attitude to be a celebrity. What I knew was that I had something to say. I knew that I wanted to create a platform where people would care about the things I had to say. Love and Hip Hop created that avenue for me, and I’m thankful for that. Now that I have all these followers, it is time for me to say something important for the children out there, for my children out there, for the people that don’t have voices. For the people that want to say things but have never been given the opportunity to speak their truth or they live in fear. I feel that I’ve been put in this position to speak for those people. There are so many things that I’m concerned about. I’m concerned abut the school to prison pipeline, I’m concerned about prison reform, I’m concerned about the disparity in education depending on the neighborhoods you live in, I’m concerned about women’s rights, I’m concerned about how we are treated when we walk into these boardrooms. So instead of just being concerned about it, I’ve made a decision to add action to my concern. And I guess they call that activism. But it’s just a very concerned woman, a very concerned mother, and a very concerned neighborhood chick, that wants what’s right. Because I deserve it, my babies deserve it, you deserve it, and the voiceless deserve it.” Giving a voice to the voiceless and prison reform are also subjects that hit close to home for Yandy– her husband Mendeeces is currently incarcerated. For women dealing with similar situations, she offers, “You are not alone. The rate of incarceration especially for black men is higher than it’s ever been. When the situation happened, I was very ashamed and embarrassed. I went into an extreme depression because I felt like I was going to be judged by something that happened in his past, just for loving him. A lot of the depression was because he was going to be gone. Also the thought of public opinion and judgement. If you have children, find a village that supports you that loves you and will protect your mental space. There will be some people who will judge you or will have stuff to say or think you conspired or were involved. Build a village that will protect your mental space, build you up, and [hold you down].” Seeing the true effects of community and mentorship, she has decided to commit her life to doing the same. From her experience, she says, “I’ve learned that one man or woman can change the world. I’ve realized that with mentorship and guidance, we can absolutely change the face of a generation.” Stay tuned for our video with Yandy on Youtube.com/FashionbombTV! And for those Memphis Bombshells, Yandy will be joining us for Convos with Claire Memphis on April 20th! RSVP today at CWCMemphis.eventbrite.com.

Dream Job

Marion Joseph has been working her dream job as Associate Director of Media and Public Affairs at NGV since 2014. She’s pictured here with Holly McGowan-Jackson, Senior Conservator of Frames and Furniture, Conservation. Photo – Caitlin Mills for The Design Files.

The National Gallery of Victoria’s entry waterwall is truly magnetic. This captivating glass-and-running-water feature has been vividly etched in the minds of Australians and tourists entering its doors since 1968. And I’m sure you’ll agree, the urge to run a hand across it hasn’t diminished over half a century, no matter your age. Imagine if you got to encounter that gateway, and it’s promise of vast discovery, every day!
Marion Joseph gets to. But not only that, as Associate Director of Media and Public Affairs, she plays a pivotal role in attracting people to visit and expand their minds at this famed institution.
This RMIT Bachelor of Arts (Professional Communication) and Bachelor of Communications (Journalism) graduate has fit an impressive list of roles into her 33 years. While still studying, she sought out next-level internships, including just cold calling the BBC, and subsequently jetting off to London for six-weeks work (serendipitously taken on, thanks, in part, to the stellar reputation of another Aussie already employed by her responder!).
Marion also up-skilled through community newspaper roles, and later penned hard news and a shopping column for Leader Newspapers. She didn’t miss out on a live-abroad experience either, working in Singapore throughout 2009. Upon returning home to Melbourne, she juggled writing, publicity, and even a retail job too.
An advocate for just picking-up-the-phone or sending-that-email, Marion’s first formal interview actually came in response to an advertised Senior Publicist position at NGV. Since being hired four years ago, Marion has progressed to managing an inspiring team, and to her current role as Associate Director of Media and Public Affairs.
The diehard storyteller dishes on her passion for art, provoking wider introspection, and learning for a living. She also manages to group TDF in the same sentence as The New York Times (expect blanket NGV coverage from now on!!)
The most important word in the get-your-dream-job lexicon is…
Perseverance.
There’s a lot to be said for never giving up. If there’s a job you know you want (I had wanted to work for Harper’s Bazaar or Vogue since I was nine years old, and had collected books on fashion from a very young age to improve my knowledge) you must pursue it with single-minded determination. I spent a lot of time reading fashion criticism of my fashion writing heroes and studying their work. I also spent a lot of late nights in Singapore working on think pieces about fashion trends and movements, trying to find the right language and structure for those pieces, and ensuring I researched the subject matter as much as I could.
When I was living in Singapore my roommate asked me, ‘What job would you come home for?’ and I said managing the publicity team at the NGV, as it would combine my passion for creative writing and promoting the world’s best art, fashion and design. I think when you want something you just have to go for it until you eventually get there. And you definitely will get there with a focus on constant learning, honing your craft, being patient, and never giving up.
I landed this job by…
When I was at university I undertook internships at the BBC in London, the Melbourne International Motor Show, The Age, The Melbourne Times newspaper and Royce Communications.
A friend I’d made in a tutorial, with who I’d had great debates, was working at a community newspaper and recommended me for some casual writing jobs. This turned into a full-time contract at the end of university. After a couple of years, I moved to writing hard news at Leader Newspapers (based in Mornington and Northcote). For two years, I covered all kinds of topics, including a shopping column. I learned from some amazing old-school sub-editors – their vocabulary in writing headlines was incredible and their brutal editing taught me to be succinct and clear.
Another friend from university was writing about beauty for Harper’s Bazaar in Singapore and mentioned that a senior fashion features job was coming up. So I arranged to fly to Sydney to have a coffee with the Editor-in-Chief when they were in town. I was so nervous because that was the only job I ever wanted. But I was also super nerdy/obsessed and had spent a lot of time reading about designers, the history of design and engaging in online fashion forums. The Editor-in-Chief saw I had solid background knowledge and was passionate about the role beyond belief!
I ended up getting the position and working in Singapore throughout 2009. I had always wanted to live abroad and understand a different culture, plus I was given license to think about the zeitgeist of that time and relate those to fashion-focused features.
After a year, I wanted to come home to be closer to my friends and family. I was able to fill a maternity leave cover role at Leader Newspapers, writing lifestyle features on food, fashion and bars. At the same time, I also called Arts Centre Melbourne and did some publicity for them, as well as worked in a knitwear shop.
My Arts Centre Melbourne publicist role later became full-time and I worked there for two years before a friend notified me of an advertised opening for a senior publicist at NGV. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to promote the NGV Collection and the incredible blockbuster exhibitions. There are thousands of incredible stories to tell on a daily basis about the people and the practices behind the contemporary and historic art and design, and that is a veritable gold mine for a diehard storyteller.
The NGV application was the first I’d ever done, and I’d never had a formal interview before!
A typical day for me involves…
… meetings with artists, curators, and exhibition designers to find the stories within a particular exhibition and then communicating these to journalists, editors and producers. Most of the work is underpinned by constantly seeking out the ‘why’ of a story: why this exhibition, why now and why is this work particularly relevant, significant or fascinating?
There can be incredible backstories about how and why a work was painted, how it’s been conserved, as well as the personality of the artist and designer, and how the artwork came to be in the NGV Collection.
I remember telling David Hockney that I loved his iPad drawings of crystal glass teacups (I’m a big collector of teacups), he smiled and told me those came about because painting faceted crystal glass was very challenging, so he would constantly practice perfecting the depiction of crystal glass by drawing these teacups on his iPad! It is the little anecdotes like that, which are so deeply enriching and create lifetime memories! There are always so many stories and nuances behind each individual artwork, practice, and process.
A typical day also involves staging media calls, facilitating interviews between journalists and curators, preparing media kits for launches, creating content pieces and finding new and creative ways to get the message out about all of our stories.
The most rewarding part of my job is…
… learning for a living. My curiosity is satiated on a daily basis, by getting to delve deeply into the NGV’s collection and asking the NGV’s incredible staff about their knowledge of an artwork, art movement or artist.
It is an incredible privilege to have this kind of access into an artist’s/designer’s/curator’s world… to understand their work or a particular premise behind an exhibition, and what drives them.
It’s also deeply rewarding to see these important stories communicated to a wide public, as the work NGV does is so vital to the community. I think people come to the gallery more and more to see the contemporary art and design of our time and to understand the world we live in. So there is deep meaning in communicating these stories because they build connection and understanding of the world and our place in it. The stories behind the art can provoke introspection and shift our perspectives.
And in a changing media landscape, there are limitless opportunities to be creative in the way we communicate these stories via media. We can do a 360 film of the new floor-to-ceiling salon hang in our European 18th and 19th century galleries or we can live stream a media in conversation event with Ai Weiwei.
We have done some rewarding partnerships in recent times including with TDF and The New York Times, which have resulted in some very engaging talks presented at the gallery which delve into questions like ‘Can design make us happy?’ and ‘Can artists be agents of change?’.
I think there’s a desire for many people to ask deeper questions through the prism of art and design; there’s an appetite to understand how art and design can shape or reflect the world we live in and be a catalyst for very contemporary conversations about politics, race, identity, globalisation, and more.
On the other hand, the most challenging aspect is…
There are hundreds of stories behind every artwork, every new display, exhibition design and exhibition, all very worthy of being told.
And sometimes journalists will say ‘we can’t do every story Maz’ [editor’s note: sorry!!] So the challenge is always finding the right placement for a particular narrative at the right time. Ultimately, this is rewarding because eventually, all the stories find their rightful home.
The culture of my workplace is…
The NGV has some of the most talented, hardworking and intelligent staff who I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. They are all deeply passionate in their pursuit of enriching the lives of the public through the displaying some of the world’s best art and design.
My team inspire me on a daily basis. They are very bright, kind and curious people with exceptional work ethics and are all truly creative and engaged thinkers.  Just this week, Georgia Logan and Isabella Radevski (who have junior positions in my team) presented their kids PR strategy to the curatorial team. It was so awesome to witness the growth of their ideas – their passion and intelligence blew me out of the water.
I am also always truly supported to think outside the box and be as creative as possible in finding new ways and platforms to communicate narratives.
The best piece of advice I’ve received is…
…“You don’t ask, you don’t get”. When I was a journalist I had some incredible mentors as editors who always encouraged me to grow as a writer and editor by constantly trying new things, writing features on different subject matter and generally widening my scope of reporting. I think the pace of newsrooms and their openness to new ideas has definitely helped me in my current role to constantly ask questions, expand and improve the way we communicate.
I always have huge respect for people who take a punt and just call or email. Make that contact because you never know when something will come up – consider the serendipitous circumstances of me securing an internship with the BBC because the person I contacted has a wonderful colleague hailing from the same country and university as I did, or even Georgia Logan just emailing me randomly. She became an intern, then a casual employee, and is now an invaluable part of our team.
The other piece of advice is to constantly read. I read as much news and as many features across myriad topics.  I think this definitely helps with my writing and creative storytelling.
Over the years, NGV has…
… become an incredibly vital space for the community – you can come and experience pure joy or beauty through the art and design in the NGV Collection, understand contemporary life and times through a dynamic program of talks or reflect on the world quietly in our gallery spaces.
It is now a welcoming place for everyone to come and I think Melbournians are rightly very proud of it.
In the next five years, I’ll…

This flip-flop can be explained by his unimpressive record of accomplishment to date. Trump has reversed himself on campaign promises that range from job creation to “draining the swamp,” and has already reached record levels of unpopularity.
Thankfully, Trump even seems to do bad things badly, as evidenced by his initial failure to ban Muslims (his second attempt also faces stiff legal challenges) or repeal the Affordable Care Act. He’s not even able to perform some of the basic functions of his office, like filling staff positions.
Trump’s opposition has performed considerably better. From the Women’s March that inaugurated his presidency to the town-hall activism that blunted his first healthcare bill, the progressive resistance to Trump and his party has outperformed even the most optimistic expectations.
Michael Moore launched a “resistance calendar” in February, and its entries already read like a photo album.  City names flash by, one after the other:  Selma. Houston. New York City. Minneapolis. Newark. Philadelphia. Nashville. Smaller towns show up too, like Hagerstown, MD and Ogden, UT.
Then there are the causes: Protect the environment. End the Muslim ban. Black Lives Matter. Stop the wall.  Prevent fast-food CEO Andy Puzder from becoming Labor Secretary. (Mission accomplished there.) Stand up for racial justice. Strengthen Muslim-Jewish solidarity. Protect our air and water. Stand with Standing Rock.
That’s the right way to resist. We already know what you hate. Tell us what you love.
It seems like a lifetime but, as these words are being written, only 99 days have passed since Trump’s inauguration. That means it’s only been 98 days since that gloomy spectacle was followed by a global wave of women’s marches against Trump and the things he represents: greed, bigotry, sexism, and an old-fashioned Republican hatred of public service.
The Women’s March was the first sign that this new movement was not going to be drawn into dark fields of negativity or the politics of personality. Its anti-Trump hostility was matched by the positive vision of a world we can still call into being. Its anger was accompanied by an even feeling of love: love for one another, love of country, love of humanity, love for the planet.
And yes, the Women’s March in Washington was larger than Trump’s inaugural crowd – three times as large, according to scientists. Overall, the Washington Post concluded that between 3.2 million and 5.3 million people marched in the United States (its best guess was 4,157,894), and that an additional 307,275 people attended 261 global marches in places like Nairobi, Sydney, Athens, Moscow, Tokyo, Antarctica, and Zimbabwe.
Anti-corruption protests took place during Senate hearings the following Tuesday. Then came the spontaneous demonstrations against Trump’s first attempt at a Muslim ban in airports around the country, starting with New York’s JFK airport. The pro-Muslim marches that followed, including the one I attended at the White House, were moving expressions of solidarity with a beleaguered religious minority – one of several minority groups Trump has targeted for persecution. (Like many people, I especially appreciated this placard, which is as unprintable as it is heartwarming.)
Two weeks after the resistance first appeared, it had already surpassed Trump in popularity, with a sixty percent approval rating that outstripped both Trump’s and the tea party’s at a similar moment in its history. But the movement was just getting started. Republican members of Congress like Michigan’s Dave Trott were confronted by furious constituents during February’s congressional recess, as concerted activism blocked the GOP’s first attempt at passing that lethal giveaway to rich people known as “Trumpcare.”
The next major milestone is the April 29 Climate March in Washington DC. And the movement has elections on its mind. “Elections matter,” as Nina Turner told participants in an Our Revolution webcast this week, “from the school house to the White House.”
Opposition to Trump will not be enough to carry these candidates to victory. In an era when so many people are struggling to survive, it will take a hopeful vision to break big money’s political power. Hatred and anger will not mobilize the base or bring persuadable voters around. It may sound trite, but it’s as true today as it was when Marvin Gaye first sang it from a million radios: only love can conquer hate.
The “resistance” name is a badge of honor. Resistance leaders in nations like France, Spain and Europe’s Third World colonies paid for their service with years in prison or exile, and often with their lives. It is not a word to be used lightly, and it cannot be earned without hard work and sacrifice.
There were those who tried to claim leadership of the resistance for the corporate-funded wing of the Democratic Party in the weeks after Trump’s election, usually from positions of privilege and power. Their goal was to focus its attention solely on Donald Trump’s negative qualities, without addressing the underlying structural flaws in our democracy. They would have been wise to remember the words of Mahatma Gandhi. “A non-violent revolution is not a program of seizure of power,” Gandhi said. “It is a program of transformation of relationships, ending in a peaceful transfer of power.”
Perhaps the most hopeful aspect of the new resistance movement is in the relationships it has transformed, the communities it has formed and strengthened, the many people it has called into service.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said that this country needs “a radical revolution of values.” It’s heartening to see the anti-Trump resistance move so quickly toward that revolution, toward an affirmative vision that rejects the limited political choices of the past and demands broader horizons of possibility. If it holds to those high-minded ideals, we may remember the past 100 days as a turning point in our history.
