Ensign
One of the lowest grades of commissioned officers in the US Navy, the word itself dates back to medieval Europe, where senior squires carried into battle the banners of those they served. Eventually, such a squire became known as an ensign, after the banner itself. According the Century Dictionary the title of ensign was introduced in 1862 to replace the unoffical rank of passed midshipman, a 19th century term used to describe a midshipman who had passed his lieutenant's exam and was eligible for promotion, but was awaiting a vacancy to become available at that grade.

So, y'know how on each new "Weird Al" album, there's a polka medley of all the songs that DIDN'T get an exclusive parody on the album? This is my comic strip equivalence of that. All the stuff like Turning Red, Thor, Peacemaker, and Lower Decks that I had loose ideas to parody but never quite had the right idea for, all smooshed into one sketchy gag. :)

Spanish naval ensign of the warship the 'San Ildefonso' which was captured by the 'Defence' at the Battle of Trafalgar, on display for photography in 1962, draped over the parapet of the Queen’s House, Greenwich.
Spanish ensign captured with their warship, 'San Ildefonso', 74 guns, by the 'Defence' at Trafalgar. It was hung in the crossing of St Paul's Cathedral during Nelson's funeral service on 9 Jan 1806 and was presented to Greenwich Hospital for display in the former Royal Naval Museum in the Royal Naval College at Greenwich by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's in 1907. It passed to the NMM with much of the rest of that collection in 1936. This design of ensign was in use from 1785 to 1931. The field is divided into three horizontal stripes; red, yellow, red. On an applied patch in the central stripe is an oval containing the arms of Castile (a yellow/gold castle on a red field) and Leon (a white field with a red lion rampant ), a crown above. The arms appear the have been printed or stencilled. Inscribed on the hoist in ink: 'SAN ELDEFONSO'.
