Do you think one could attain decent-ish ability to read Japanese just by studying kanji? Specifically asking because the kanji learnin' service "wanikani" is the single Japanese resource that works best with my brain, but then there are separate resources for grammar and vocab and and and.....
You will get REAAAALLLLLYYY far knowing only the kanji but you're going to have to know hiragana and katakana at some point too. Tofugu, the company that did Wanikani, has two mnemonics-based guides for the kana that are basically Wanikani Lite. They're how I learned the kana and I swear by them.
Here's hiragana: https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/
And katakana: https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-katakana/
Hiragana are especially vital to learning kanji; you won't be able to use 99% of Japanese-English dictionaries without them. BUT they're pretty easy and the rules for using them are consistent. You won't have to remember any irregular exceptions for any of them.
I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard really good things about the Crystal Hunters manga series as a fun/low stress way to learning Japanese vocab and grammar. It eases the reader into new concepts and then repeats them throughout the chapter so you remember them. There are free vocab and study guides/lists for each chapter too. Might be worth checking out once you get some kanji and the kana under your belt? The first book is also free.

Good luck!!

Captain Sabeltann (eng sub)
The time has finally come. I have now subbed all three shows of Kaptein Sabeltann on NRK in English. This has taken about as long as I suspected and I don't even know if people will watch them, but I had a lot of fun doing it 🥰✨ 🏴☠️
Here is the link to a drive with the shows.
A little about the shows and which order to watch them in:
"Captain Sabeltann and Gory Gabriel's Treasure"
Captain Sabeltann and his crew travels to Kjuttaviga where Pinky is sent ashore to spy on the people there to find out where Gory Gabriel's treasure is hidden.
2. "Captain Sabeltann and the Magical Diamond"
Captain Sabeltann and his crew goes to Shangri-La in the search for the Magical Diamond, a diamond that can fulfill wishes, but the evil Maga Khan is also on the hunt for the diamond. A small boy, Marco, has stolen the diamond in an effort to keep it away from Maga Khan and his queen.
3. "Captain Sabeltann and the Enchanted Island"
Captain Sabeltann and his crew has been plundering the island of Gral and stolen the Golden Tiger from the Count of Gral. The witch Miriam of Gral was supposed to guard the treasures of the Count, but the Count punishes her for failing and starts scheming to take revenge on Captain Sabeltann and his crew.

Sorry to talk about it again but I'm just still flabbergasted by the whole plagiarism thing
Like... When watching hbomb's video the first time and seeing him point out the rewording of stuff to change it *just* enough to (hopefully) not get caught stealing... I flashed back to my college days of when I did exactly that. 😅
There was a limit on how many actual quotes I could use, so I got around that by literally looking at my sources and rewording it enough to get past the plagiarism checker (TurnItIn.com my belothed) without losing the meaning of the text that I honestly didn't fully understand because I was writing on topics I had no real knowledge of myself.
BUT BUT BUT
I still cited my fucking sources.
Yes, I was using other people's words so I could get through the hell that was college, but if you read my stuff, you'd know exactly where I got it from. I never claimed credit for all the ideas.
And... again... I was just doing it to survive. I wasn't making money. I didn't even end up actually graduating, so it didn't even help me academically.
Somerton on the other hand not only rarely *if ever* credited the people whose words he stole, he was doing it for money, while also putting down fellow queer creators. He *wanted* full credit for all the ideas in his videos. To cite his sources would be to pass the credit on to others. And he couldn't do that.
Edited to add: It's probably a bit extreme to say I "stole" anything for my papers. Like I said, I cited my sources. I just paraphrased what I could when needed, probably to a degree that was questionable at worst. I just have anxiety and feel like "OH NO I"M A TERRIBLE PLAGIARIST."
