Killalla took the last bit of white out of Dream’s hair

(Editing to clarify: Not Killalla in person, but the whole situation around their failed relationship, which also includes Desire)

Some of you might remember my post about Miguelanxo Prado’s work for The Heart of a Star, how all iterations of Dream start out white and that we still see a few white streaks in Dream’s hair in Endless Nights.

And since I’m currently putting artwork for March Madness together, I just broke my own heart. Because:

Morpheus at the beginning of Heart of a Star:

He clearly has the white streaks here.

The moment of walking in on Killalla and Sto’Oa:

Borderline fading.

And at the end:

They’re gone (if you ask me, the artwork even looks like they went over it again to make a point, but that could be coincidence). In each and every single panel after.

I’ve never really looked at it that closely, and now I just want to cry 🥺

Fandom and misogyny (spoiler Endless Nights)

I never cease to be appealed by the way some people will constantly find a way to dogpile on female characters, most often for no valuable reasons.

Take Killala of the Glow, in Endless Nights for example: this morning I woke up reading a post that said, "Dream and Desire used to be best friends, it's so sad they're strangers now, I spent an entire day cursing that BITCH Killala for cheating on Dream and ruining the good relationship he had with his sibling. She did them both so wrong!"

I read Endless Nights entirely (not just the excerpts that circulate online) so my eyes popped out when I read that, a bit like this:

Just because it is, you know.... it's a lie! Or at least, it is one, partially: it's true that Killala dumped Dream for another immortal being - Sto-Oa aka the Sun, no less, - who seduced her that day, but who started this, hmmm? No, not Dream's who didn't do anything wrong this time, it's someone else, search better....

It's THEM, Desire, yeah! They're the one who had fun pushing Killala in Sto-Oa's arms, and who made fun of Dream afterwards and didn't understand why he was upset!

I think maybe people forget how powerful Desire are? They are also the one who, eons later, would canonically cause Nada's infatuation for Dream and probably Dream's for her, because they knew it was forbidden for an Endless to love a mortal and wanted Dream to be caught in the act of wrongdoing...

Also, a bit of context is important here: Killala wasn't Dream's long time queen, she had just met him in her dreams a few days ago. Ok, it doesn't make cheating better, but she said herself to Destiny she wasn't sure she loved Dream yet. And once again, it was Desire who orchestrated the whole thing, as seen in this panel:

I wonder how come it's rarely pointed that he would repeat exactly the same trick eons later with Nada: he made Nada want Dream after she saw him in a dream, then made his lonely brother want Nada, because she wanted him and he was flattered by this attention.

Coming back to the subject, Endless Nights, it seems to me that Desire's intent was ALWAYS to mess with them -Dream and Killala -, because they wanted to have fun at their brother's depends!

And I genuinely believe they didn't think Dream would react so badly: nothing is serious for Desire, who lives only for the moment. How could they imagine it would be so serious for Dream, and that he would hold a grudge for so long?

Let's see a bit of context:

When we meet Killala, she has just met Dream - she tells Desire Dream visited her in a dream "some days ago"- doesn't know him much and isn't even sure she loves him. It doesn't excuse cheating on him, but I think it's fair to assume than it this story, it's more Dream's ego than his heart which was hurt. All he does after catching her in the act is telling the young Sol she will find her way home, and that her new lover will probably transport her. If he's big mad at Killala, he does a really great job at hiding it. At the end of the story, it is said by Sol's son - who tells the story to his own son - that Killala eventually died, but at no point it's suggested that Dream caused her death.

Another interesting fact to put the situation back in its context:

Killala has a little chit-chat with Destiny, Dream's big brother and the oldest of the Endless. He asks her if he loves Dream (she doesn't know, thinks she does) and tells her that "a millennia from now", the Endless will be forbidden to love mortals and that her case in particular will be heavily discussed:

Why though? It's often believed that the drama with Killala caused the "no romance with mortals" rule, but Destiny says it would be decided a millenia after Killala's era so frankly, it's doubtful that her fallout with Dream caused this.

However, it occurred to me that it may be the tension between Dream and Desire, caused by Killala cheating on Dream with Sto-Oa, that was discussed. Think about it: Dream and Desire probably worked together before Desire did that "joke"... After that day, they worked AGAINST each other, or at least Dream looked down on Desire's realms and Desire hated him for it. I don't think that Dream having a failed romance with Killala had any influence on the universe per se, but isn't it very likely that the shift in Desire and Dream's relationship did? 🤔

Another reason could be that Sol, the future sun that would shine on Earth, wanted the not yet created mortal humans to look like Killala, who he found very beautiful.

Who knows if Dream didn't have a negative reaction to this idea, and caused the higher instances to decide that it was better for him and the other Endless to not have romanced with mortal beings who liked the woman who had previously hurt one of them? All speculation of course, since we don't know much about this "no romance with mortals" rule after all, but it's so fun to speculate!

But I digress (bless Tumblr for the absence of text limit!). The subject of my post was the misoginy which Killala of the Glow, among other female characters in The Sandman, were subjected to by a part of the fandom. Don't get me wrong: what she did to Dream was very bad, cheating is wrong! But let's not accuse her of "separating the siblings" while:

1) she was surely under Desire's influence (see the screenshot below: Desire was watching her and Sto-Oa engage in a discussion, smirking),

2) the only one who can fairly be accused of doing that was one of the siblings themselves, Desire, when they decided to make fun of their sibling by humiliating him.

3) Also I'd argue that if Dream was entitled to be angry at his sibling - it was a very bad joke... - he should have moved on after a while.

Fun fact, by the way: Dream was disappointed by Killala's change of heart, but he didn't seem angry at her, and he let her go. He even understood immediately what really happened and Desire's influence! That's why he directly went to Desire after he caught her kissing another man. It was Desire's actions that hurt him, way more than Killala's, because he valued his sibling's affection and considered him his favorite sibling.

But sure, let's blame the blue skinned lady for not being able to resist the manipulations of an immortal being, who's got exactly that kind of power. Let's just do that! 😒

This part is giving me the movie frame of the couple lying with their back to the door, but with different backgrounds reaching out behind them to find their missing half. Morpheus hasn't slept in days and the crew is on the last leg of the tour and he's losing his mind, the brief calls between you doing nothing to satiate this need for you, how he craves to hold you close, inhale the scent of your shampoo and litter you with thousands of kisses. You feel the same, void and empty without him next to you, your dreams unbearable the quiet of your room doing little to soothe you on those late nights.

Tomorrow I got another plane, I'm not gonna take it, Instead, I'm gonna fly straight to you, I paid double for the tickets, And I don't give a shit about the contracts that I signed, And they can say whatever, we'll be making love, I'm fucking you tonight

Then like you said, Rogue this definitely has the vibe of him busting through the door practically rabid, his muscles flexing in his back top, ripped black jeans and black converse. You're sure your mouth hangs agape but not for long cause he's grasping you like a lifeline and whispering all the things he wants to do to you.

You groan, gasping for air as you break away, knowing you look a complete mess as you were finishing up dinner or work so you toss that aside and pull him to your room like "better get going, yeah? We've got lots to make up for, Morpheus."

The subtle smirk lights his features and his eyes darken as he takes you in nodding in kind as he kisses your hand, before utterly ravishing your lips and pulling you in his arms, holding you so tight while he lays you down on your back, determined. "For you my love, anything."

The Sandman vol.11 - Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman

The eleventh volume of the Sandman series is a collection of short graphic stories dedicated to each of the Endless. The idea was great on its own, and in my opinion the execution was stunning. I loved every single story, my favourite one is definitely Dream's, I have been thinking about it everyday since I read it, it filled me with emotions I didn't think I could feel. It left me wanting more of these character, and I cannot wait to get the final volumes set in this world. I am so so happy, and I know for a fact I will reread some of these stories multiple times in the future, it was really an amazing journey that I glad I decided to take.

I just finished reading The Endless Nights for the first time and I need to scream about it first if all it's incredible, there is so much that I love about it, and also a lot of stuff I don't really understand (like for example what really happened to Delirium), but this fucking killed me:

Desire was Dream's favourite sibling? And they did that to him? Like Dream's own grudginess aside, I too would have been so pissed at my sibling for something similar.

well that's the thing, right - we don't know if that was desire's fault

mocking him for it, yeah, that was on them, but killalla's actions? dream has always assumed that desire is the one interfering in his love life, but we know a lot of those assumptions are false - desire finds dream's failed love life funny, but they rarely actually interfere in it to cause misfortune

(nada is the only one we know was definitely them, the rest dream just jumped to that conclusion)

and like. yeah, either way their comment was cruel. but they're also surprised after that dream took that so badly, and i do wonder what dream's sense of humour used to be like that it matched with theirs? like dream specifically uses the word funny. and dream and desire have always been so similar, the only real difference between them is that dream views mortals as people he is duty bound to care for, whereas desire views mortals as their playthings. and killalla's one of the first mortals ever, so back then those differences hadn't had a chance to conflict

and i think the interesting thing about dream and desire's feud is that it's impossible to know who really started it. yes, it's entirely possible that desire caused killalla's infidelity entirely to spite dream because it was funny, which is what dream thinks, and he becomes convinced from then on that desire cares for nothing and will take every possible opportunity to fuck him over

but knowing everything we do about desire, if i had to look at this from their perspective, it's also entirely possible they didn't do shit. they thought it was funny how easily mortals succumb to base pleasures, in the same way people might laugh at a video of a pet doing something dumb, because they do not view killalla as dream's equal and probably never did. so when dream gets all offended over them essentially going haha look what your pet did they take that as wow he can't take a joke okay he really needs to get over that one if he's taking that personally

and both of them stick to those initial assumptions and every single thing they've done to each other has been because of those assumptions, getting more and more reinforced every time desire does something cruel to dream and every time dream's ego causes problems for everyone particularly himself

(and like. im not saying desire's in the right here, but i'm also not sure early dream really understood that his girlfriends were people either, see again: nada. like, he changes his mind on nada so fast in season of mists because death pushes him into looking at things from nada's perspective - the first time in 10000 years he's ever even thought to do so. they're on an entirely different playing field here from human morality and it took dream a while to step down from that, desire is yet to do so)

as far as delirium goes, i also have emotions (and an explanation) about that! we're never actually told what set her off, some upheaval in her life (i do wonder how recently after the end of this comic that was, and if it was grief over dream that did this), but strong negative emotions for delirium have always been what pushes her to be less lucid (they're actually what caused her to change from being delight), and this was one of the worst. she got entirely lost in her realm, trapped in a haze where she was no longer even close to resembling a person, just a cloud of delirium that was giving off waves of mind rending power - not even her siblings could get close to her without losing their minds. but barnabas came to find dream and dream recruited volunteers from the people who'd already had their minds touched by her, who were already lost in her realm and thus couldn't become any more broken by getting close to her, to go in and find her

(and we've seen dream navigate delirium's realm, he's pretty good at it, because it's similar to navigating the dreaming - you don't use logic, you can't focus on physical direction or you'll get lost and you being lost will create something terrible, because you navigate them through emotion, through impulse, chasing one feeling as it turns into the next. so dream just had to tell them to focus on a little girl who's hurt, and they'd find her. which they do, and connecting with delirium and bringing that comfort of you're not alone helped pull her back into consciousness. and once she was back to herself, she could lead all of them out, which is why we see those people heal and come home after so long)

(and god i wanna know more about this situation, because destruction came back for her. this is after everything, after destruction left for good and delirium was really hurt that he didn't come back, didn't even show up for dream's funeral - this could also be the inciting incident - destruction came back because del was hurt. he's not taking up his mantle anymore, he kept his word on that, but he promised the family he'd stay and look after delirium until she was feeling better. he didn't come back when she was so sure he would, but he came back when it mattered, because he cares about her so much)

Rollo accidentally sniffing your hair

So, I was inspired by this little art I found on pinterest and I just couldn’t help myself. Here we go!

Notes: Female reader, also the female reader is well liked by Malleus, the reader isn’t Yuu but they do live in Ramshackle dorm. Also, Yuu is the one from the manga.

Part 1

Today was the day you were leaving your lovely Halloween behind at NRC. For you were departing to somewhere you didn’t know. All you knew about this new adventure was the location was in a small town far off in the land of Pyroxene. Since Grim's recent activities lead the two of you to join the others, you were in need of some travel supplies.

You: Sam! Sam: Little Demon, here you go! I heard you were joining them, so I prepared this in advance. It’s a premium travel bag! Everything you may and may not need is included in this special bag made just for you. Paid in advance by the Headmaster of course~ You: Thanks! *looking inside of the bag* You really do have everything inside this bag. This shampoo… Isn’t this the one Malleus uses? Sam: Yes, you did mention you wanted to know what he used didn’t you? You: I can finally achieve that shiny hair…

Without wasting any time, you rushed into your bathroom ready to use this magical bottle of shampoo. Once you finished showering you had been greeted by Malleus, who came to see you after hearing you joining.

Malleus: Hm, you smell different than normal. You: Do I stink? I’ll go shower one more time. *walking away in a hurry because you now think that you stink* Malleus: *shocked* Wait, that’s not what I mean… Did you perhaps change your soap? You: Oh… *embarrassed to tell him that you now use the same shampoo as him you hesitantly tell him everything*

Malleus: I see *smiling* Do you really like my hair that much? You: Yes, but it was more like I wanted my hair to be shiny and healthy like yours.

Part 2

You were on a tour provided by the student council president Rollo. He was a strange boy with a bowl haircut, but he was polite. Although, you did find it odd how often he sniffed that handkerchief of his. You thought that it must have smelt really nice, especially if he was sniffing it often. Overall, everything seemed to go smoothly, he even knew some background information on those who were attending this trip. Excluding Grim, Yuu, and You.

Rollo: Oh *looking at you and Grim* You & Grim: *looking at Rollo* hm? *you walking a little bit closer to him* Rollo: My apologies… *holding a lock of your hair* You two are? You: Um… that’s my hai-

*everyone (except Grim and Yuu) in the room freezes to look at Rollo and you*

Grim: I’m Grim! A future great wizard master! Yuu: I’m Yuu, nice to meet you. Rollo: *realizes he’s sniffing your hair* … my deepest apologizes to you

*his face went red fast because this was a big mistake. Afterall he was student president, but he still held onto your hair since he was frozen in place*

You: Um… can you please let go of my hair? *Rollo who was frozen in place, drops your hair fast and attempts to turn away from you to hide his embarrassment* Rollo: *Ahem* Your name is? *back facing you to hide his embarrassment* You: *turning Rollo around to face the direction as you* I’m _______ *holding out your hand* Nice to meet you! *smiles* Rollo: *takes your extended hand and does a small shake* Ah, so you two are the attending students Headmaster Crowley mentioned. You: Oh, and Rollo *getting closer to Rollo again you took a little sniff of him as well* There, now we’re even and you don’t need to feel bad about sniffing my hair. Rollo: Uhem… that’s a … *blushing even harder than the last time he turned around in a hurry* Let’s return to the tour, shall we? *turns to look at the others* Everyone: Yes! You: Rollo, if you liked the smell of my hair so much that you mistook it as your handkerchief, then I’ll lend you the shampoo I use. *smiling, trying your best to reassure him that his mistake was okay* Rollo: Thank you for the kind offer, but I must decline. You: Well, if you ever change your mind don’t hesitate to ask!

Part 3

While Rollo was sniffing your hair there was a mess unfolding all behind you.

Rollo: *sniffing your hair* You: *having the conversation in part 2*

Meanwhile

Azul: She was able to converse with him much easier than me… what are her techniques? Idia: I don’t think they’re conversing it’s more like a misunderstanding Malleus: He’s smelling her hair… she’s smelling his hair… Ruggie: How do I smell? Deuce & Epel: *sniffing each other’s hair* Jamil: Now that I think about it, her hair is looking different compared to normal Sebek: *could care less about the mess* Silver: *looking at Malleus* Malleus is something …Wrong? Malleus: There’s nothing wrong. Why do you ask? Sebek: You’re shaking! Idia: Here we go, the crazy trio is about to cause chaos. Yuu & Riddle: *rushing to help the Silver and Sebek to hold down Malleus*
