ronan dreamt matthew when he was 3, but he is not 3 years older than matthew?

ronan is 17 for most of the raven cycle and matthew is said to be 15 in chapter 12 of the dream thieves. ronan tells adam that he dreamt matthew when he was 3 in chapter 20 blue lily, lily blue.

then, in call down the hawk, matthew is to be turning 18 in a month, according to declan in chapter 51. ronan is supposed to be turning 19 on his birthday in chapter 38, since this is the year after the end of trc.

declan is stated to be 21 in the prologue of cdth which puts him at 2 to 3 years older than ronan but he really should be about a year older than him considering he's a senior when ronan is a junior in the raven boys and I can't imagine that declan was held back during any of his school years. still, that information makes him at least 19 in the raven boys during his senior year at aglionby!

i guess this stuff is another inconsistency along the lines of it being november in chapter 25 and 53 in trc, and october in chapter 64, with ronan's birthday celebration (his birthday being november 1st) in chapter 33. in cdth it is also november at the beginning of the story, but adam visits ronan the day before his birthday in chapter 38.

so I started this post confused about matthew being 15 and ronan being 17 in the dream thieves alongside the information that ronan had dreamt him at 3 with the possibility of the explanation that ronan had dreamt him already aged a year but after continuing further research I am even more confused. girl help.

the thing about shiv and the baby and motherhood is i really dont think she'd care. i dont think she's ever had any interest in those things, in fact she's made it a point to be as far from those things as possible to show her father she's a serious person and as close to one of the boys as she can get. i still think people making digs about her ability to be a mother would be insulting to her insofar as they are meant to insult her, an incredibly prideful person who tries very hard to always be seen as hypercompetent no matter the task.

if anything, i think it might make sense that she found out about the pregnancy before logan died but i truly don't think she'd keep it once he was dead. he's about the only person she would keep the baby for, like she might feel it would give her leverage or sympathy, but once logan is gone the baby honestly is nothing but liability to her. it makes her perceived as less serious about the business it takes her out of the running for ceo or any real power.

i know theres obviously threads of inescapability as with every character in the show, and the ways in which shiv has tread on other women to get where she is yet cannot help being entrapped by the same things as those women, but i also feel like there's just something. i dont want to say misogynistic but the way shows sort of inevitably use motherhood as an intrinsic humanity-finder, like see she's a decent person she's keeping the baby she's not heartless, or whatever, is so flat and reductive, to me.

I recently got into Don't Hug Me I'm Scared (the original unsettled me too much back when it first came out), and honestly it's one of my favorite examples of beauty in horror.

It's a nonstandard beauty of course, but I've always been a fan of surrealism.

Using a children's medium alongside brutal horror, not solely for viewer shock value but as a commonplace part of the characters' lives that they've become used to, all to tell a story of growing desparation and being trapped in a cycle designed to keep you from questioning it, is so fascinatingly beautiful to me.

The original percy jackson series is about cycles of abuse and neglect, right. Were introduced to percy as a kid who has clearly been left behind by a school system that has given up on him, restless and unengaged and self-defetist because hes been given nothing that works for him and no one even tries to meet him where he is. Then hes told no, listen, your neurodivergence is amazing and you just need to be given something that actually utilizes your unique palatte. And thats obviously the uplifting idea rick wanted for his kids, right. But once we get to know chb the same cycles are happening there too. There are kids "left behind" there too for one reason or another, because their parents dont want to claim them, because their parents werent important enough to get a cabin. Do you get it, all the kids who dont fit the most common neurotypes get shoved into the same closet. Kids are being left in a cruel world to fend for themselves without the tools they need. Theyre dying because no one bothered to accommodate them. Its such an obvious parallel that the first chapter introduces a teacher whos written to be especially hard on percys disability and she turns out to literally be one of these monsters trying to kill him. Meanwhile sally jackson tells him she named him after Perseus because she wanted a redemption for a hero whos story ended in tragedy. Meanwhile every book in the series replicates a greek myth step for step until the moment they break the cycle. Annabeth, playing Odysseus, is talked down from her hubris and grounded by her friends. Percy, playing Heracles, meets someone wronged by the original Heracles and rights his wrongs by refusing to go down the same selfish path as him. Monsters are reborn because they are--as the books explicitly call them--achetypes. These kids are stuck inside the cyclical nature of mythology because thats what happens to mythology, it gets retold over and over again. But these are the kids who have to live it. The series ends with percy being offered immortality and he rejects it because he wants to use his godly favor to force them to break their cycle of neglecting their kids. The series ends with a declaration that we cant keep letting this happen. The very first book offees the same choice. It ends with percy refusing to keep the head of medusa as a spoil of war, refusing his heroic reward. He lets his mother have the head and use it to kill gabe. Isnt that fucking crazy for a kids book? Gabe wasnt a Monster. He wasnt going to Turn to Dust and Disappear in a narratively convenient way. He was a living breathing mortal dude and percy and his mom killed him without remorse. Break the cycle of abuse!!!! Dont let this happen again!!!
