A sense of horror
One of my favorite tropes that I honestly think is pretty underrated is a loved one or an onlooker’s overwhelming sense of horror when they discover what has happened to a protagonist/MC.
Like.. a character stumbling in bleeding and broken—itheir loved one’s dread building and building as they unwrap the layers of mc’s clothing with shaking hands, only to find more and more and more blood— overwhelmed with panic and anguish when they discover just how deep the injuries go.
MC being brought home after a near-disastrous rescue mission, and the caretaker is finally able to get a good look at their injuries in proper lighting, and the horror hits them when they see deep, bloody gashes, whip marks crossing along their back, deep cuts and bruises in various stages of healing, a broken bone jutting out awkwardly at an angle it definitely shouldn’t be, and they’re just so overcome with revulsion and terror and heartache at what mc has had to endure.
And that whole time, they had no idea. There was nothing they could do, but god they didn’t know it could get this bad.
An onlooker, struck with a nauseating realization of how twisted some of their companions can be; the guilt of a bystander a weight that grows and grows, as they wrestle with dueling urges to help and to stay silent. (shoutout to @whumpsday for giving us another perfect example of this trope just yesterday)
Or even a villain/whumper, who agreed to participate in the cruelty, at some point down the line becoming too repulsed by the bloodthirst of their own comrades or fellow whumpers, suddenly unable to look anymore, wracked with guilt and disgust and thoughts of ‘god what have I done…’
A caretaker, rescuer, or even a new captor obtaining a whumpee who has been so conditioned by their past abuser that it makes their skin crawl. MC asking, begging to be punished at the slightest perceived mistake, or just bringing their new captor or guardian something to beat them with before falling to their knees. Anything that leaves them horrified, wondering ‘what the hell did they do to you’ yet also being too afraid to ask. The “are you my new master” trope may fall under this category and is also just immaculate.
God I love this trope, whatever you call it.

if i had to pick a song that i think perfectly encapsulates the amazing devil i think i would have to say it's not yet/love run. it just has everything for me : it has the drama and variety of the instrumentals and vocals that they show throughout their other songs, it has the highs and lows, it has the storytelling. it has the harmonising of multiple lines of thought and song, it has the callbacks to other songs, it has the moments where joey and madeleine break through with their laughter. it has those key messages that tad perfectly convey: the fantasy that's grounded in reality, the struggles and the overcoming of them, and the people that help you with that, and the relatability of it all. it has that feeling of love and safety and hope all from their vocalisation of a single line. it's like everything they put into their music is brought together in this single song

i think part of why i love tsp is i love horror but hate threats
#no monsters in that game! the horror comes from your solitude#you are the only one in there! you are the map’s sole living occupant#when you see that rare glimpse of the employee walking through the window you don’t feel /fear.:#you feel /relief./#relief that slowly dwindles as you realize you will never get to interact with this npc#you’re as alone as ever#and the game knows this!!! it knows it!!!#your sole company is the narrator- a disembodied voice. that’s it. nobody else#(yes i know the curator the timekeeper/settings person but you get my point)#and some of the most unsettling moments in the game are moments when the narrator is quiet#the playtester ending where you fall out of bounds and he can’t follow you#the infinite hole in that moment where he leaves and you can’t do anything but wait#do i even need to explain the skip ending. the distress in the narrator’s voice- the distress YOU feel at being forced to leave him alone#he actually has a really interesting bit of dialogue in there. to paraphrase- ‘if you can hear me then maybe i’m real’#i feel this line perfectly encapsulates the loneliness of this game#it is just you and a voice. each confirming that the other is there. that the other has an impact. that their actions mean something#that they’re real.#and what’s CRAZY about it is that it’s not even a horror game!!!!#is that part of it? yes undeniably. but the game is about choice#the narrator says so all the time#GOD it’s so good. one of those games that turns you into a philosopher#another reason i like tsp is because the narrator is relatable lmao#i too love to go on long tangential rambles and use purple prose and i too will be distressed if nobody listens to them#might be why the skip ending seems to frighten me extra#anyways i think more art should focus on the horror of loneliness and effects of solitude on the soul#i could write a goddamn essay on this shit. actually i might i loveeeeee analysis

I think it's really amazing how they managed to make every single character transgender. I just think that's beautiful

whenever someone designs lovecraftian stuff it's with cephalopods and i understand, but also the horror of it is how utterly alien the anatomy is. what im trying to say is less octopus-heads and mere tentacles, more unholy fusions of familiar anatomy with the unreal
like, it's about the inhuman trying to root itself into a mortal space, the unknowable wearing what's familiar to us and tearing the skin apart bc it's just so incompatible with our perception and physical limitations. it's like those series of deepdream vids where the computer tries to understand what a frog is but it can't so it just projects horrifying masses of Dog onto it (see below for an example)

idk what it is about classic minecraft or mods that emulate classic minecraft that is so interesting to me.
in the game the world really seemed infinite (even though I was limited to the world that the xbox 360 version generated) and it felt like so much was... hidden. Like it always felt like there was some kind of hidden temple or dungeon or maybe just a strange cave to find. I never had the option to check out the snapshot versions as a kid so that also factors into my experience. And learning about everything that was removed or never made it into the game is a whole other rabbit hole, like what if cogs were added back in? or the nether reactor? idk
the other part of that nostalgic interest is actually community stuff, mostly the music parodies. Like cube land is still so cool to me, and the early days of herobrine were so interesting, that whole creepypasta was so enigmatic and mysterious.
I feel like Minecraft doesn't really have that mystery anymore, partially because of the way it's development has changed over time. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, just different. I just wonder what it would be like if they tried to do some spooky/horror update in a non rated e for everyone way, like how some minecraft ARGs do it. I remember there was one with mysterious glitches and shadow entities in a alphas version, and another with a strange beta branch done by another dev team. I don't actually know the names.
I think that the slight horror of the unknown is what made Minecraft so engaging to me. Now that I know about everything the game has its just not as interesting to me. maybe it's just time running it's course, but I do feel like the vibe of the game has changed over the years.

Question for fans of underground (or even just lesser-known) horror: What’s your favorite kill scene in mainstream/big screen horror? As in movies that people who aren’t either movie nerds or horror junkies are likely of at least knowing about. I’m tryna see something here. Bonus points and a pat on the back if you include why you like it so much.

tbh one of the joys of twin peaks for me is how the show plays w some pretty heavy topics n treats them all (usually) pretty seriously but remains a fun nd enjoyable ride while also having humanity + empathy at its core
