In The Last of Us, Ramsey (who uses any pronouns) plays a queer teen surviving the apocalypse, for which she used a chest binder “90%” of the time. Past roles, however, like Catherine Called Birdy required a more feminine appearance.

"This is what bothers me more than pronouns: Being called a ‘young woman’ or a ‘powerful young woman’, ‘young lady,’ but I'm just not [that],” Ramsey said. “Catherine Called Birdy, I was in dresses. Young Elizabeth, I was in a corset. And I felt super powerful in that. Playing these more feminine characters is a chance to be something so opposite to myself, and it’s really fun.”

Speaking to the Times, Ramsey said they identify first as a person, rather than a gender. “I’m very much just a person. Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like."

[As for homophobic TLOU haters]: “I know people will think what they want to think. But they’re gonna have to get used to it. If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that’s on you, and you’re missing out.”

I've been seeing a disturbing number of "queer safe spaces" describe themselves as things like "femme & them" and even worse "she+," conflating femininity & nonbinaryhood. cease this immediately. say it with me: nonbinary people are NOT women-lite and it is extremely violent and straight up incorrect to imply that all they/thems are fem adjacent. this is erasure and this verbiage does nothing but make gnc and nonbinary spaces unsafe for masc and male nonbinary people. nonbinary, genderqueer and other third gender people can be and are masculine and men, we can be hes as well as shes and theys, stop allowing yourself and your peers to view nonbinary as woman/femme-lite, signed a butch nonbinary person.

I know SEVERAL afab nonbinary people who, as soon as they came out as nonbinary - immediately began dressing in ridiculous hyper-femme outfits they never would have worn before. A lot of people see this and say shit like “Theyfab” or say they are only nonbinary for attention. After all, look how femme they are.

But to me, this makes perfect sense. When you are forced into the category of “woman” against your will, femininity is a chore. It’s a job that you have. As soon as you say no, I’m not a woman, suddenly femininity isn’t your job anymore. It’s not a requirement. It’s just a fun hobby you can get into. Or a little treat sometimes.
