Do you think that it's out-of-character/a retcon for Edelgard to know from the start that Alear's a dragon but not take any issue with that because she sees them as a benelovent and kind person?

It seems like a pretty blatant attempt on IS' part to whitewash Edelgard's speciesism away by rewriting it so that she doesn't have any issues with dragons and only hated Rhea because she thought she was a bad leader imo; it's at least consistent with her Hopes characterization, where that aspect of her personality also got scrubbed away, but i still really dislike just how hard IS has been working to remove her biggest character flaws in every game she's been in post-3H.

Benevolent or not (I mean, she says this to Flayn, a cleric!), children of the goddess should not rule over the people because they are children of the goddess ; aka, regardless of their actions, pointy ears cannot have power over round ears, period.

And bear in mind, this quote isn't from CF, but from either SS or VW, aka routes not centered on her (and supposed to be more neutral than AM where she is the final boss).

Supreme Leader doesn't like pointy ears, period. In CF, she develops a bit more (especially in the non Pat'd version), but she thinks they have no human understanding/feelings, and refuses to even consider the idea of "coexistence", the "masquerading as humans" part comes to mind, and ultimately her question being roughly should humans be led by inhumans or not? And if you exclude inhumans because they are, non humans, rather than excluding them based on their actions, well, the issue is not their actions (or lack of), but their nature.

So yes, our Supreme Leader would have had qualms about Alear and the existence of a Divine Dragon, while she knows how to not spout her racist/specist theory at the wrong time, it generally makes no sense for her to be chummy with Alear.

FWIW, Heroes doubled down on her specism while mumbling something about "Gods" (but then, F!Edel talks to Mila the lizard lady, and not to Ashera or Yune!) but yes, if Supreme Leader has to be an emblem and exist alongside Corn, Miccy, Ike, Leif, Celica, - well, any of the FE Lords, she had to be heavily retconned because her views can't match at all with theirs.

The Fodlan Emblem though was pretty much decried everywhere for this, and also the fake "uwu we're all fwends" when Supreme Leader tried to ice the two others in FE16, and shits on their countries or their characters at any given occasion.

Nopes scrubbed off the specism, but only because Nopes doesn't fully explore her reasoning like Tru Piss does, there's no occasion to rant about evil pointy ears and explain why they suck to a party who... follows her because they want to be paid (Barney).

However, given how in Golden Shower, she outed Nabateans as "not being what they seem" to convince Clout - I'd say it still exists and is still one of her reasons to want to get rid of the CoS and Rhea : her ears are pointy.

You know, some time ago I was plotting with a friend a story more or less about this (sans the daddy/son rp lol), in which MY as a spy did end up falling for WRH after being so favored and appreciated.

The thing was that he was still in love with LXC and going back to him had been his motivation for everything that far, so in the end it came down to choosing with his head, and the math sadly didn't fully add up for LXC bc there hadn't been any security about what was going to be of them once the war was over, and MY couldn't expect, neither did he want to make LXC break his beloved rules for him.

On the other hand, WRH made it very clear to him that he would make MY the empress of the world he was going to conquer, so even if he may have loved LXC a bit more, well... you can't survive on love.

MY knows all too well the reality of the world and his life has literally depended more than once on not believing in fairy tales. WRH loved him too, and he could also give him the security and position he deserved -even higher than his due as a Jin. He would never be disrespected publicly nor forced to do whatever it took to not freaking die.

In an ideal world, he would marry LXC and everything would be perfect, but that would be too much of a gamble when, on the other hand, he has someone who does love too and has made it clear in no uncertain terms that all his needs would be met if he just let himself be loved by him.

So yeah, boy has too much life experience to not seize a good chance when he sees one. He had seen what feelings and longing did to his mother.

Curious about visuals in your Frey Empress Au. Haven't finished all the chapters yet so sorry if I asked something you already answered but....

Does Frey have a special outfit as Empress? Like a go-to thing that you imagine her wearing when she is the Empress. If so, what does it look like? 👀

Ooh, this is fun! I don't necessarily have specific visuals for like An Outfit, but more of just general vibes for how she would dress.

Considering as Empress, her image is very important and can be ways she makes a statement, Frey doesn't really get the chance to just throw on any outfit and go about her day. She has people helping style her and picking/making her clothes, and everything she wears now happens with intention. She gets input on styles and colors and such, but she also has a peer review process for how she's dressed each day. Given her youth, I do think there will be an emphasis on picking items that make her appear mature, competent, and confident.

I think particularly in her early days as Empress, she'd opt for darker and more muted colors, both to keep with her state of mourning, and also to project a sense of maturity and seriousness. I think once she feels more secure in her position and time has passed, she'll break into lighter and more vibrant colors.

Her day-to-day wear as Empress would be more formal than she previously would have considered daily wear in Selphia. Whether it's Frey's choice, or that of the people helping her construct her image, she would pick more Elegant styles than something overly Ornate - though there are certainly Very Fancy and ornate styles she'll wear for special events - something that is still very well made, but not an ostentatious show of wealth and power.

She does stop wearing her hair in the twin ponytails that we see her in, as she finds the look to clash with the image she wants to project as Empress. I do think in future years she will take to cutting her hair shorter, but as a new empress her hair is still very long. Most days she'll opt for a single braid, or have all her hair kept up off the back of her neck in elegant buns or braided crowns.

And speaking of crowns... this is the only thing I have a solid idea of. Haven't gotten to it in story but we'll get there soon. There is an Imperial Crown. It's a heavy, ornate, kind of ugly thing that has been worn by all past leaders of the Empire. While it can be worn on the daily, nobody really did. It's definitely more ceremonial than functional. On the daily, Frey has a circlet made for her, and while it doesn't initially reflect her choice aesthetics (I think she'd want something light and nature-inspired) it was made by the artisans of Sechs to reflect the aesthetics of Sechs, so she wears it to represent her People.

even if women who channel were "the 1%" in the sense that we mean it when talking about people like Bezos, etc. (and they are not) they still would not deserve to be enslaved and treated like animals. Even if someone hates Aes Sedai that much, there are tons of women who can channel who are NOT Aes Sedai but who would get swept up by the Seanchan as well -- the Windfinders, the Wise Ones, the Kin, and all the undiscovered channelers in various places across the continent.

regular people who can't channel ALSO get enslaved by the Seanchan - they are called da'covale and there are TONS of them. Da'covale are just as relevant to any discussion of the Seanchan system of slavery as damane.

I have plenty of criticism for the aristocracy as well, and I am no fan of feudalism and there are, of course, plenty of abuses under that system as well. But I've argued strenuously that the Two Rivers never needed a Lord, for example. And the Two Rivers also served as an example (pre-Perrin's Lording) of a society that ISN'T based on aristocracy. And I very much approved of Rand making it so that laws in the countries he rules apply equally to nobles as they do to everyone else. My criticism of the Seanchan system of slavery doesn't mean that I'm letting everyone else off the hook.

part of the whole issue that I have with Tuon in CoT is how persistently the book acts like her being a slaver isn't a big deal. Slavery has EVERYTHING to do with it. And Mat cared about slavery in Winter's Heart.

Mat isn't supposed to be the guy who approves of bowing and scraping to nobles, but somehow he becomes that guy for Tuon, the slaver. Again, where was that The Shadow Rising energy here?

Joline being kinda petty and overemotional sometimes is very much NOT the same as being a slaver, in terms of negative character traits. This is the exact issue that I was talking about, how CoT!Mat acts like character flaws on the parts of the Aes Sedai make them "just as bad" as the sul'dam literally wanting to enslave them again.

I'm not certain what distinction you're making here between a 'natural' leader and a 'good' leader. You say that Perrin's a natural but bad at it but that... is completely counter to how I would use the phrase 'natural leader', which implies some level of competence at leading. So I think our disagreement here is one about wording rather than actually disagreeing about Perrin? So, to rephrase, I don't think Perrin is "naturally good at leading" and probably should have actually listened to people's advice sometimes. It sounds like we agree he's a bad leader (at this point in the books).

Your speculation about Sulin going with Perrin because Rand's self-isolating is one of those things that does make a lot of sense as a head-canon but that is never really suggested or implied in-text, at least not that I can remember.

Same about Rand avoiding the Black Tower because he mistrusts Logain's PoV. Or, rather, I kinda put that in the bucket of "Jordan making up an excuse because he hadn't figured out how he was going to solve the problem of the Black Tower yet". Rand essentially has no plot in CoT at all and the Black Tower would have been A Plot for him to actually have here, which would have been nice.

On the topic of How Do You Handle XYZ Comment, I've always wondered how you handle terrible responses on your toh takes. Like I know the toh fandom doesn't lack piss on the poor reading comprehension and they also really enjoy wildly out of touch takes, but I've never seen any comments on your princess luz stuff of that nature. I'm sure they must be there but maybe I'm too early? But anyway, how do you tend to deal with the "acktually shipping luz and Hunter is incest" and the "ur not a real lesbian because putting amity in a poly ship is lesbian erasure" and the "as a white person kinda sus you make the poc woman an empress" kind of responses? Ones that are technically not hate and maybe if you squint could be from people who aren't inherently trying to do bad but just lack the maturity needed to engage with the internet at large?

this ask made me giggle. honestly, i haven't received as much pushback as you might expect! way less pushback than i expected. in the princess AU, i've gotten a LOT more "this is actually too grotesque for me to stomach" comments than "this is problematic" comments, which is fine. horror-thriller isn't for everyone, those comments do not upset me.

i have had a Few run-ins with bad faith people, whom i mostly block. there's one prolific commenter in toh tumblr fandom who would repeatedly write angry essays on my humor meta posts -- essays that were all about how belos is too evil to be sympathetic and/or about how hunter is a soft gentle boy who shouldn't be jokingly referred to as evil. then they'd go "i can't help my active and conscious decision to type a bunch of rude fucking words and then my active and conscious decision to send those rude fucking words because i'm autistic :(((" around the fourth or fifth time this happened, i was fucking done with that nonsense and finally blocked them. shoulda done it after the first comment tbh!! no more autism exceptions.

as for the rest of it, my main management strategy is to simply.... preempt the bad faith comments?

i had a LOT more unpleasant and conflict-filled fandom experiences when i was in the raven cycle fandom. that was my first exposure to "you can't ship multi-gender polycules if anyone involved is gay" and "queerplatonic het relationships are just heteronormativity shipping that you're trying to get away with." having dealt with those takes before, i've found a few different ways to disarm bad faith readers before they get started.

first is to be super open and honest about my interests. i talk about what i find compelling in different relationships All The Damn Time. it's really hard for anyone to accuse me of only wanting hunter to fuck amity if they've seen, like.... anything i've said about hunter and amity.

same with hunter and luz. the only negative reactions i've really gotten to how they're written in the princess AU is like.... two people being squicked by camila thinking they're romantically involved. i REALLY expected more pushback on the touchyfeely bed sharing stuff, but from what i remember, there's never been Any....? not even from people who consider them siblings.

i expected a lot of pushback on how mean hunter and amity are to each other, since it's taken So much farther than the canon. but it turns out that there's a very large overlap between people who like dark horror AUs and people who like hunter and amity murdering each other. (in a fluffy fic i don't think this characterization would fly Nearly as easily.)

i find that being funny really disarms people, too. when you look at any of my toh meta posts that could be controversial, they're basically all funny. people are a lot more willing to listen to what you have to say if you make them laugh, and it's harder for them to get angry at you.

and then the last thing is that i think i'm in sort of a privileged position in toh fandom. i've written a lot of controversial subjects and relationships and characterizations.... but i've also written some WILDLY popular mainstream fic. and people who like the mainstream fic don't really want to beef with me about differing niche opinions, bc there's a level of respect there. which they might not have for a writer they don't like.

but anyway. when things Do happen, i almost always just block and move on. there are so many people here who get what i'm talking about that there's no need for me to try to convert people who don't, you know??

It’s so much easier to pretend. Pretend about everything, really. Like this doesn’t mean anything and they’re simply friends. They’ve gotten so used to the act, playing their parts according to what’s right and what’s wrong. Meeting up just to talk, having a few drinks, waiting to see what’ll happen next. But nothing ever happens, does it? Because, for one reason or another that she can’t quite explain, Mat never lets it go further than her imagination. Unlike every other man she’s ever known, Mat has abstained from taking what she’s readily offered. Sometimes, it’s a little embarrassing to put herself out there for him to take. Other times, she prefers him like this because it makes her feel valued, appreciated. Like he’s interested in more than just one thing that will inexplicably determine their friendship in the future. Truth is, he’s different. And Theo’s afraid that this sudden confession will only ruin what they have now. “You’re not gonna remember this tomorrow.” And she won’t remind him either just in case he doesn’t mean it. Most of all, she’s trying to convince herself that it’s not true. For the Fanfiction Work-In-Progress Guessing Game, I have a few words - pick as many or as few as you like! Gobsmacked, blunder, peak, weary.

Ooo these are fun words!

Unfortunately I don't think I've ever used Gobsmacked or Blunder in my writing, they're not in my normal vocabulary. But I might have to rectify that, because they're good words.

Peak: I had this one in the next chapter of Our Dear Empress, and I can share it without too much worry about spoilers.

They breached the mountain peaks by lunch, broke long enough to feed and water the horses, and have their own hasty, cold lunch.

Weary: OKAY I know I use weary. I know it's in my writing vocabulary, but apparently I don't have it coming up anywhere in my WIPs. But I did manage to find it in a little Our Dear Empress offshoot piece I may or may not ever finish. I guess all my characters are at the points of the story when they are getting the rest they deserve (lies). Anyways, it's not much, but here it is.

It was late, her heart was heavy, and her soul weary.
