Maybe The Remarried Empress would be a better, more compelling story if the author didn’t hate Rashta’s guts so much. When I say that the amount of Rashta bashing in the text ruins it, I’m being 100% serious because it’s SO DULL.
Would it kill the author to make Rashta a bit smarter? She’s so dumb and tactless that she couldn’t be a threat if she tried, she’s just a fool waiting to be jeered at by the audience for her stupidly evil deeds. That way, her existence never challenges or threatens Navier, the shining perfect Queen who’s the embodiment of nobility and always morally correct. The author doesn’t want you to question why Rashta is depicted as the most spoiled and entitled character in the main cast (even though she’s surrounded by royalty, the people most likely to be spoiled and entitled) despite being the only commoner.
Rashta is a victim in so many ways, but the narrative obscured that by making her devoid of nuance and depth and just making her the stupid slutty mistress who dies at the end of the story.

Literally the best couple ever, hands down.
The beauty of the true (future) imperial couple
Tumblr media
Now THIS is a Crown Prince. The Crown Prince ever.
On my knees for him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Callisto’s expression speaks volumes. He was not expecting anything of her, and yet he always goes all out whenever Penelope comes into the picture.
Even with the dress, when Penelope asked him why he sent it, Callisto simply said that he had missed her and thought of her when he saw it.
He’s scrambling for affection points from Penelope without even realizing it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes I look at them and wonder “just how dumb do they have to be to not realize their actual feelings for each other??” because normal people don’t look at each other like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Busting out tissues and a bucket because I’m going to bawl my eyes out next chapter. They’re going to be so miscommunication for a good chunk of the upcoming chapters *sobs*

You know what's even ironic, the fact that Kaufman is still in love with navier even though she's now pregnant with heinreys children. And the fact that kosair, naviers brother is a violent man that caused him to be outside the borders and how he even goes tok far as to feed rashta abortion drugs is so scummy. How the hell didn't navier even stop or at least call them out for their shit?
Because Navier doesn’t care. Slavery is a huge problem in her empire but she barely bats an eye at that when we’re supposed to believe she’s this ‘fantastic empress.’ Honey- where??? ((Stop congratulating people for doing the bare minimum lol)) It’s really just a bunch of telling but no showing especially for a story that should be a bit more politically involved?? Plus We really don’t see her interact with the lower class save for that magical orphan who- as we see has to be magical in order to get said attention in the first place! (Fantastic philanthropy really)
How ironic would it have been if she’d been originally pushing to end slavery before Sovidiot brought in Rashta?
Ngl Id actually be more sympathetic to Navier as a whole as despite her cold exterior it showed that you know she was actually pushing for reform for the lower class citizens! But nah she can’t be bothered to deal with peasants.
But back to your point- Can someone please tell me what the whole point of the Kaufman/Navier plotline was? Because honest to goodness it sounds like pointless drama to extend the story length at this point. Either that or just show how irresistible goddess Navier is.
Someone once reblogged/replied to my last post and said that no one in this series is a morally good person. That’s fair. I agree they’re all pretty terrible people in their own ways. Honestly I’ve said it time and time again. I don’t have a problem that they’re terrible people.
Good characters =/= good people
What irks me is when the novel disrespectfully handles heavy topics like slavery and trauma to build up its Mary Sue fl. The whole story markets itself as being some pro feminism revenge story but it’s really not? It doesn’t feel like at least half of the cast gets their proper comeuppance? No seriously- Sovieshu should’ve kicked the bucket. Heinrey and his creepy friend should’ve been held more accountable to a higher degree as well.
Navier isn’t a girl’s girl at all. To both the character and story’s fault Everyone must either worship her or hate her. No one who disagrees with her is allowed any sort of meaningful empathy that Navier in my opinion is sort of undeserving of. (Anyone is free to argue this- but she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and everything magically works out for her. I’m supposed to feel more sorry for her than the girl who was sold by her abusive father into slavery?) hahaha no.
At this point I’d advise people who actually want to see a pro feminism story with political intrigue to read ‘I’ll Saved this damn family!’ Now that’s a story that can treat other women who aren’t the fl well and promotes pretty good relationships between them too.

Bear with me cause I'm gonna go on a rant that will probably be a bit incoherent but I'm brainrotting rn
so this concerns the webtoon community(although it's probably a widespread phenomenon in fandom) but
Y'all love complex and morally gray female characters(or even just characters of every gender) until they are complex and morally gray
I've seen a lot about this especially for Annabel Lee from Nevermore so I won't touch upon her case in this rant but the point still stands for her go read analysises.
so today i'm gonna be discussing Rastha, also known as Trashta:
Tumblr media
I haven't read up to much after the remarrying of Navier but I feel like my point still stands. Also spoilers
Imo, Rashta is a complex and sympathetic villain. She grew up as a slave and believed her child was dead (child who was a also later used as leverage to blackmail her.) It's logical she tries to up the ranks to never live as miserably like this. She's a product of unfortunate circumstances. I do not think she's in the right, but that's kind of the whole point of her character to be the antagonist.
Also, she didn't want to be Navier's ennemy at first??? She wanted to live in a world where she was happy and that's valid. (Navier's reaction was also valid mind you.) She acted like she was indifferent to her first baby's fate yet she let herself be blackmailed because she DID care for it. She goes throught emotions and layers and that makes her complex.
Yet despite being sympathetic and half of the bad things in the webtoon happening not being her fault, she's the most hated character.
I hate Sovieshit and her blackmailer much more. Sovieshit was really using double standard against Navier like "oh yeah i'm allowed to have a mistress and divorce you just cause I feel like it and i'm using you for my own benefit but don't you go remarrying yourself or having a lover you're mine >:((((". Sovieshit is borderline a mysogynist (he only wants a delicate woman he can control to do as he pleases) but no Rashta is the real horrible villain we must demonize her.
Now her blackmailer(i forgot his name but if you read the webtoon you know who he is). Most of it his fault. He is using and ataking advantage of Rastha who wnats nothing else than to be free. Sovieshit is painted as a bit sympathetic(wrongly might i add) but this guy is just plain evil. But he's not more hated than Rastha????
I'm not defending her actions I just want people to see further than their noses and realize that characters can be good without being good people.
Now even if i see it more for female characters this is real for male characters too but kinda in the opposite route? Like in twisted wonderland, the characters are MADE to be villains yet people smooth them over as poor little meows meows and babygirls. It's funny as a joke but it erases their entire personnality and complexity, while morally gray female characters get demonized for having the same grayness.(Also i'd like to add that Vil schoenheit, a feminine male characters gets also demonized like female characters so i'm starting to see a pattern here.) So double standard much?
in short, don't say you like complex and morally grey characters if you can't handle them correctly. They deserve better than you

I have some things to say...
CW: Rant, bisexual erasure
Mileena x Kenshi shippers are so problematic. No one disagrees that Mileena is bisexual. We all know she is, it's canon. But the issue is that NOBODY in this fandom seems to give a shit about the obvious wlw relationship between Tanya and Mileena in MK1.
People have never had an issue with others shipping Baraka and Rain with Mileena, because Taleena was never fully confirmed. But now that it is, people are finding any excuse to ship Mileena with a man. These people prefer to ship her with people she has zero chemistry with than with a woman. They are pulling ships out of their asses at this point.
Your first reaction to a wlw ship like Taleena should NOT be "this is bisexual erasure" because the writers didn't force a relationship between characters who don't know shit about each other. I can't make a post about Taleena without someone going "ERRRMM she's bisexual FYI 🤓" , as if being with a woman doesn't make her bisexual??? Is she only bisexual if she's with a man because that's what makes you comfortable??? Because that sounds like bi erasure to me...
What's even grosser, is that these are the same people to fetishise Johnny x Kenshi without batting an eye, but SEETHE at the thought of two women being together. It's not at all surprising that a lot of these people are straight women.
Mileena x Kenshi has absolutely taken over this fandom, and it is so fucking heartbreaking to see. Ship whoever you want, I don't care. But clearly something is going on here and it breaks my heart. Acknowledge that Mileena is bisexual, but also celebrate that we FINALLY got a somewhat decent wlw relationship in the media for once. It's already so hard to find this representation, so please do not take it from us!!!!!!
+there's a billion other characters you can be shipping. That's why this ship feels targeted, because it is so specific and strange....
- Yours truly, a fellow queer

it’s hard to take some individuals seriously on this app (or ANY social media app since they use the same talking points that can be disproved with a quick google search or idk OPENING THE BOOK) when they go on and on and on about how the series as a whole is only about ‘feudalism BAD’ which YES it is but this is a fictional f a n t a s y series and deliberately choosing to ignore that grrm is known for using his work to critique multiple points of interest and maybe, just maybe, he can critique the monarchy and still bring up other talking points; like how rhaenyra was usurped due to misogyny (it’s also weird the number of people that don’t seem to care about grrm creating the amethyst empress and the bloodstone emperor as direct parallels to rhaenyra and aegon and how each event affects the world of asoiaf but whatever).
it’s ridiculous to claim you’re team green (which means you want aegon to be king, not that you like tg characters) and in response to those on the other side try to take the ‘moral high ground’ by ONLY mentioning how the monarchy is bad when rhaenyra, a potential female ruler, is involved (which is a bit on the nose, don’t you think?) stanning team green and being anti targaryen is almost point blank the definition of hypocrisy. trying to claim you support them bc they were being neglected/abused (even though most of the abuse came directly from their mother and grandfather) which apparently gives them the ‘right’ to steal the throne, or the use of andal tradition (not law) as a way to demean rhaenyra’s position as heir, or even how they only want what’s ’best’ for the realm and aegon is that; despite how he very much would have been aegon the unworthy before we even made it to aegon iv’s generation; and no, you can’t use ‘he had a better council!’ when he fired anyone who didn’t immediately give him what he wants i.e. removing otto as hand bc of him not wanting to resort completely to bloodshed during the dance.
so feudalism is fine if it benefits alicent? aegon? aemond? but i thought all targaryen’s are evil and should go extinct? and aren’t alicent’s children TARGARYENS? so by spreading anti targaryen rhetoric you should be happy that the green’s entire bloodline was wiped out, right? it’s normal to like/dislike certain characters but to state that an entire house should be obliterated whilst liking the characters that exacerbate the worst traits of said house (or are enablers of said behavior) is especially rich, and would really be downright hilarious if it didn’t showcase how insincere and sanctimonious some can be in this fandom. stop constantly moving the goalpost and just admit that your views contradict one another regularly, it would make it a million times easier to engage with you.

I caved and read Remarried Empress because of your post and honestly I strongly agree that the fandom is very nasty towards Rashta. I mean yeah, the story is very much set up to frame her as a villain no matter what she does since the Empress is the main character, but I feel like Rashta also has some strong points as a character and she's reacting like anyone would to some of the offences she receives from the Empress (imo the story rationalizes why Navier is mean towards Rashta a bit too much for my liking). Idk, I know it's popular to pit women against each other in romance stories so there's a scapegoat, but it's a bit infuriating when most of the fandom demonizes Rashta when she's literally just a gal who's out of her depth.
I am in desperate need for a story along these lines where you can have women in opposition to each other but neither are demonised. Please... I just want a story with flawed women who the fandom appreciates for their complexity....
I've said it in the comments of another post, but it always bears repeating that Rashta was born a slave! Slavery is one of the greater evils of society! She was physically and mentally scarred, sexually abused, had her baby stolen from her, and hounded by her slaver even after gaining freedom! Of course, she's doing everything she can not to go back to that! Like, I know suffering doesn't automatically justify your actions, but y'know, I don't blame her for trying to win the protection and love of literally the most powerful person in the country.
Navier has every right not to like Rashta, but dear god, the fact that slavery exists while she's the Empress is not a good look for her, and Navier is my favourite character!
If the author really wanted a story about a manipulative homewrecker getting her just deserts, she should have been anything other than a former slave. Otherwise, you need to treat both Navier and Rashta as two sympathetic characters in a morally-grey conflict.
In the end, Soveishu is the villain of The Remarried Empress. He refuses to tell Navier he thinks she's infertile. He refuses to tell her he loves her romantically and wants that relationship. He refuses to understand Navier's situation, and he puts Rashta in danger without care, abandoning her the moment his ploy to make Navier jealous blows up in his face. Unlike Rashta, he doesn't have any sympathetic motivation to justify his actions. He just wants Navier to be his obedient wife, accepting whatever he does without respecting her intelligence by talking to her. Soveishu is not treated like a good person, but frankly, the narrative doesn't treat him like the central antagonist he is. No, that spot goes to Rashta because she's a homewrecking harlot who's too poor to belong in high society, despite everything to the contrary.

And now, a brief list of stupid shit that happens in Empress Theresa (without context...not that it helps)
Theresa escapes from a plane with an atom bomb in it by belly diving into the ocean involving a scheme with twelve coke bottles.
Theresa somehow comes back to life two weeks later.
Wind stops because Alien Goo Monster freaks the fuck out or something.
Theresa puts in only a six hour work schedule into saving the world. And she goes on vacation twice.
The north pole gets blasted to smithereens
Theresa gets rid of winter because she doesn't like it.
Theresa stops terrorism by making it so the terrorists must walk everywhere.
Theresa fucks with the economy at least twice by bringing in gold and diamonds from the sun.
Theresa gets rid of night.
Theresa takes over North Korea.
Theresa puts the entire world into a five hundred year long coma.
Oh, and she has a lot of horrible demon children during that time period.
(Do note a lot of this is from memory, so details may not be entirely accurate. However, I guarantee everything I mentioned happens in some form in the book. And is always way worse with context.)

Okay I'm trying to analyze the themes of the Remarried Empress (a difficult task since a lot of Manhwas I read are fantasy romance, a genre that will neglect a conflict or meaningful obstacles for two bland little leads)
And the main one I'm finding is that the obstacles and course of the story are affected heavily by historical precedent. A lot of screen time is given to talking about ancestors, previous mistresses, previous emperors. When sovieshu crumples up the wedding invitation from Navier and Heinley, his advisors first concern is that future generations will realize that Sovieshu was angered at it. Heinley's entire clan is pretty much wiped out and recorded deragoatorily in history (a bit tangential to the theme I stated but perhaps it would be better to expand it to be the influence of history)
Navier, as our protagonist, has the most clear understanding of these historical precedents and is very aware of how she must conduct herself. She's very strategic throughout the story with using these precedents and deciding when to break them.
Perhaps a foil is Krista, the former queen of the Western Kingdom. She is stated to be very similar to Navier, they are described, dressed, and speak in similar formal ways. However Krista isn't smart about when to retreat, (something that sovieshu explicitly judges Rashta for during her child's banquet scene with the decorative sword,) she's doesn't follow tradition (and because it's manhwa rules, she's punished for laying eyes on Navier's man). She doesn't follow historic precedent of retiring to the (??? I forget it's name) estate. Since I'm mainly consuming this through webtoons, it's a little hard to tell what statement this could make on the whole historic theme, but I'm looking forward to it.

Ok so I watched the first two episodes of The Empress and I just... Don't really want to watch anymore? Like at some point during my live blogging I realized "I'm not liking this show. At all". Of course not only I am a completionist, I am a Sisi completionist, so I will finish the show and tune in for season 2 if we get one. But this two episodes left me with and incredibly negative feeling that NEVER happened to me with anything Elisabeth related.
I tried to think what was the problem, because it's not only that the show is painfully inaccurate to the point of the complete character assassination of almost every person portrayed. RTL Sisi also did this and I still ended up enjoying it, if only as an original story. Damn, even the Sissi Trilogy did this sometimes. But watching The Empress just wasn't enjoyable to me. Why?
I think that my problem with this show is just how vile it feels at its core. Ludovika is an abusive mother, Maximilian is a cruel and scheming man (and if it's not clear to you that he is evil, they also stated that he involuntarily caused the death of two of his previous mistresses), Sophie is ruthless, ambitious and manipulative. Everybody is horrible to our protagonist, and the sole narrative purpose to this is to make her look better.
She and Franz Josef. There is a sanitisation of his image that doesn't sit right with me at all. I complained about RTL Franz Josef being too ruthless and sadistic, and now I'm complaining about Netflix Franz Josef being too soft and innocent. "No you see is his mother who's making him do this things!! She's the one that's imposing the brutal counter revolution politics!! Franz doesn't want to hurt the people, he is good!!" Yes, Sophie was a promoter of this politics, but Franz Josef chose to follow through. He made it happen. He imposed the martial law, he signed the execution orders. He was the emperor, of course he is the one to blame.
RTL Sisi, for all its flaws, actually managed to give us somewhat balanced characterizations. The tone was off plenty of times, but they did hit it right in some moments. Meanwhile everything in The Empress feels unearned. The emotional moments do not land because of how little build up there's to them. These first two episodes were just two hours of everyone but Franz Josef being cruel to Elisabeth. It feels that they're forcing me to become invested in her through pity rather than through flashing out her personality. "You should like her because everyone mistreats her for being Cool and Modern. You should also like her romantic interest because he is kind to her and hot. They don't have personalities, and neither scenes together in which they have chemistry. So we will have Maximilian being a creep towards Elisabeth to counter balance that. Aren't your rooting for them yet?"
The answer is no: I'm not rooting for anyone in this show. They are all too one dimensional for me to care for them as fictional characters, so all that is left is for me is to care how they are representing the historical figures that I enjoy learning about. And this I don't like at all.

so,I found some spoilers about remarried empress andLets say, your gonna hate heinrey for a moment after reading this:Whenever I see someone point out how evil Heinrey or Duke Ergi are, I feel a boost of serotonin. Because, they are terrible people. But because Heinrey is the ML, we're just supposed to ignore he was literally planning on starting a war for no reason with the Eastern Empire, and even before that, he was draining the magic from kids (who are *orphans* and their only way to rise up in life/social status is their magic - even besides that, taking away their magic is like taking away a limb, it's a part of themselves)? No way. And no, other mahnwhas/webtoons doing this (i.e. excusing the ML's terrible actions) doesn't make it an acceptable trope. And the author dropped the ball so hard on Kaufman, I swear.
((I barely remember Kaufman tbh. Most of the characters personality in this story can be summed down to this ‘I’m a good guy and Navier is a goddess. I’m a bad guy, pls ignore my blatant trauma as I’m not apart of the church of Navier.))
This story really gets wonkier the more you think about it. Heinrey has done some terrible things but then the story tries to pass him off as a “OWO OWO CINNAMON ROLL BC HE’D DO ANYTHING FOR QUEEN GODDESS JEDI LEADWR NAVIER!!679!! 🥹 ISNT HE SO WHOLESOME?!”
Totally bull.
I don’t have a problem with Heinrey starting a war or doing shady stuff because that’s ironically the only part of his personality that doesn’t boil down to massive vanilla flavored SIMP. What I do HAVE a problem with is how it makes zero sense how he fell in love with Navier so quickly and how there was zero tension between the two. The story never even addresses it in a meaningful way- so I say, “what was the reason?!?”
Think about it, Navier is supposed to be a fantastic empress who works hard for her people and is super politically savvy but none of that shows with Heinrey or his weirdo friend. Ironically her marrying Heinrey to still maintain her power could’ve been more interesting if she really did use it as an undercover spy thing if she were suspicious about him- because I mean how did she not put two and two together? Since Heinrey came into town people- WIZARDS a huge part of her empire started losing power and an uneducated slave started pulling powers move that she’d otherwise not know about- like how didn’t she figure something out??? Is she stupid?
I also like how the citizens rightfully feel betrayed by this and get angry- for once it’s actually some realism! But the story only uses it to say “OwO poor lil Navier no one understands our queen/goddess 🥺 stupid peasants!”

Is there anything you like about amol?
Elayne giving Rand the ter'angreal that will conceal him from the Shadow and Rand giving Elayne the seed that will help her create angreal. This is also the scene that also kind of drives home why Rand/Avi/Elayne come across like a polyamorous couple so strongly with Min just... existing on the sidelines just for Rand.
Rand advocating for the dragon’s peace. I do like that Sanderson remains invested in maintaining how much Rand and Egwene care for each other because their dynamic is very important to me.
Moiraine's scenes with Rand so far. Also Tam's scenes with Rand, though I'm not particularly fond of the character problems that Sanderson introduces for him which are very ooc for Rand (something about not caring for the people around him before dragonmount and letting go?? I don’t get it. He Let Go ages ago. The problem is that his suicidal ideation is still being encouraged and Cadsuane of all people tries to tell him not to think that his death is inevitable).
Elayne and Aviendha being wives TM although it's probably just a scene or two in total.
Elayne being proud of Rand's growth and capabilities even if she's actively opposing him
The brief Mat/Rand reunion which pretty much sucked and was super ooc (read: sanderson transfers all the homoerotic tension that Mat and Rand have to Rand and Perrin, kind of, and all of Perrin’s issues to Mat because Perrin is his Special Fave), but there were like one or two nice dialogue exchanges.
Egeanin’s scenes because she’s a favourite and Sanderson kind of gets her for the most part
I lowkey dislike Tuon at this point after I learned she never changes her views but the sentiment conveyed in this conversation between her and Mat is very romantic:
[Mat] “Well, I know how you feel about me.”
[Tuon] “And how is that?”
“You looked over your shoulder.”
She shook her head. “I had forgotten that you are supremely good at saying that which has no meaning, Matrim.”
“When you saw me,” Mat explained, “with a dagger in hand—as if to throw at you—you didn’t call for your guards. You didn’t fear I was here to kill you. You looked over your shoulder to see what I was aiming at. That’s the most loving gesture I think a man could receive from a woman.”
I guess that’s it? lol. I’ve already finished half the book.

I like Navier well enough but I can't bring myself to root for her all the way. Why? Because what are her personal politics? I still don't quite know. Yeah, she cares about her people/former people but did she ever care about the slaves? Were they ever a part of "her people"?
The topic of slavery in The Remarried Empress is such an afterthought which is weird because one of the main players is a former slave??? It's a church-sanctioned/run practice (woof) and the royal family allows/doesn't seem to have a strong opinion on it??
This speaks to the author and their world-building. As nebulous as it's treated a simple line of "Slavery bad. I do not condone." would go miles. But they don't? Or maybe a line about "Hey people can't own people."
But we don't even get that and as a person who is descended from slaves...it's just wild I guess.
Like I said before my sympathy for Navier only goes so far. Yeah, she wasn't in a fulfilling relationship and her goal of being empress (in power) was jeopardized for a minute because of Rashta. However, now she's got a boy toy that's head over heels for her and is queen (and soon to be an empress). No matter the circumstance she's a fictional racialized white woman.
She was always gonna be okay lmaooo.
