Book Chat: Empire of Lust
Empire (Book 4) by Rina Kent

My Boss. My hell.
When I slept with a faceless jock as a teen, I didn’t think I would become pregnant. I also didn’t think I would lose that child. Several years later, I find out that my daughter is alive and I’m given a second chance. One problem, though. The faceless jock isn’t so faceless anymore. He has a name everyone fears; Kingsley Shaw. A ruthless bastard. A heartless devil. And most importantly, my daughter’s father. Oh, and he hates me as much as I hate him. We’re out to destroy one another with all methods available. Including a dangerous game of lust that might lead to our downfall.

One of Rina Kent's Better Works
Empire of Lust might not be my favourite book in this series but it's definitely a close second. This second-chance romance was actually a very fun time. Other than the "conflict-of-the-book" being extremely underwhelming, I really have no complains.
Reading about Kingsley Shaw in the other books was a bore. Yet reading from Kingsley's POV, it became some of the funnest experience in terms of reading Kent's books. This is a man in his forties, who has raised a daughter on his own for half his life, yet when you're reading his chapters, you see a man-child and that's actually endearing considering how he grew up and who he currently is.
As for Aspen, she was already likeable since her Black Thorns days. However, upon learning abut her more, she seriously grew on me. Not only is she a strong independent capable woman, her "no" actually means no. I've said this about the girls Kent writes and I dislike that she loves making her female main characters not mean their objections. I am actually pleasantly surprised and utterly glad Kent did not make Aspen that way too.
All in all, I really enjoyed Empire of Lust. The romance was one of the better ones. The characters were some of the better ones. Villains were not that great but they weren't driving the plot of the book so it doesn't matter that much. And the smut, it wasn't horrific like some of Kent's other books so I guess I will call that a win.
Rating: ★★★★☆

Angband isn’t about personal torment and hands in guts, in my opinion. It’s about the exquisite impersonal bureaucracy! It’s about the grinding psychological terror, about knowing your enemy has time and power and the wisdom of ages on their side. This isn’t Sauron’s special torture times (as fun as that can be), it’s getting strapped to a rock for a decade and forgotten about for years in between. It’s mind-shattering servitude, thousands toiling beneath the earth, dying, being interred, in a lightless dark that drives elves mad. Curses! Writhing beasts! Fellow prisoners who are more than they appear! Less Saw trap and more full CIA blacksite; sensory deprivation, traitors in your midst, constant lies, the weird clinical coldness of an army dedicated to breaking people down and remaking the pieces.

it's so funny that Sausage has all this techy, fancy equipment to tell him which False he's talking to when a ruler would have done the trick
