Okay, so I saw someone say that Tim was too flustered to complement Lucy on her dress after he blatantly checked her out, but after a rewatch and some thinking this occurred to me:
Tim doesn’t comment on Lucy’s looks, but he sure as hell tells Lucy that her police work is impressive. And, listen, Lucy knows she is hot. Tim knows she’s hot. But the things that set her apart, that makes her impressive and precious to Tim, are her head and her heart. She could be in sweats and he’d still be in awe of her skills. This is so much deeper than lust, or proximity, or even a crush, Tim is in love love, with Lucy. Every time Tim gets deep with Lucy it’s all daft based and very clear. He can’t flirt, but he sure as hell can communicate.
They both believe so fiercely in each other. The fact that they look so good while doing it is just icing on the cake.

I am OBSESSED with the way Tim’s smile at Lucy turns to an absolute death glare as it shifts away from her.
Genuine smile ➡️ I will fuck you up face in .25 of a second.

All the finale did was convince me that Tim and Tamara have been hanging out off screen this entire time. Tell me it wasn’t her who made him watch Cardi B videos, called him Zaddy to his face, and then sent him down a urban dictionary rabbit hole, that resulted in him learning the word thirsty.
Tumblr media
She’s not remotely unsure around him - she asked for his badge!
They’re both having so much fun with this really weird relationship, and dynamic, and they’re totally unaware that everyone thinks is they’re father and daughter.

Leave it to Tim to ask Lucy to dance across a crowded outdoor space, simply because he misses her, and she is there, looking all kinds of beautiful. And did Tim mention he misses her? Because he does. In an annoyingly persistent way. He misses her perfume, and her laugh, and her tendency to overshare, and seeing her in that dress at this wedding just makes him brave.

Lucy might genuinely be the only one who sees Tim’s pain.
She saw it with Isobel, and Mitch. With Mack.
First hand she has seen Tim, time and time again, put his heart and soul on the line to save people. She has seen the way he looks out for cops he used to know, caring about them long after they are out of his life, the way he is willing to defend those that are defenceless. Tim only drops his guard around her, he's so tightly wound that he doesn’t even notice when he does it, but Lucy sure as hell does.

Looking back, I feel like Lucy shows her love language through cooking. She sent Tim food when he was injured (choosing to believe she cooked), we see her cooking a personal dish for her mom and then we’ve seen Lucy cooking for Tamara as well. It’s how she expresses her love and takes care of her people I think. Thoughts? Do you have headcannons about Lucy cooking for Tim?!
I adore this ask.
A while back I touched a little on this topic, and I’m here to add some more!
I think Tim can follow a recipe, he likes order and clear directions, so he’s a guy who can bake - cakes, pastry, you name it, if he can find a good recipe he can make it.
He is also a great grill master.
After Isobel left, Tim got bored with cooking, he loves good food and good flavours, and he still ate at places he liked, but it just wasn’t fun to cook anymore - that old, study, workout, eat… he was down to boring chicken breast, boiled broccoli and quinoa for the protein
Lucy brought the light back into his life, and so brought the spice back into his kitchen
She loves cooking, because it’s a little bit of improvisation - adding in more saffron here, sesame oil there, or mixing in different ingredients
One of her favourite things to do is find a dish that a person likes, and then perfect it
She did this with Jackson and his obsession with spanakopita
Nolan and lasagna
Tamara and Mac and Cheese
It takes longer with Tim, because he can’t give her a straight answer on what his favourite dish is, but Lucy is persistent.
She makes Tim Italian wedding soup
Shepherds Pie
Homemade ravioli that would bring a stronger man to his knees, and Tim is appreciative for all of them, he is! But, Lucy knows they’re not his favourite.
She branches out and tries apple pie, which is still good, but not life changing.
Lucy tries brisket and roasted veggies - Tim likes them, but she’s looking for something more in his reaction
Finally, she nails it on Thanksgiving with a whole Turkey spread - sweet potatoes casserole, roasted Brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes, homemade cranberry sauce, and a brined Turkey.
Tim tells her that night about his best childhood memory, thanksgiving with his grandparents, and Lucy knows she nailed the perfect meal for him.
Turkey is too much for everyday, but Lucy keeps it in her back pocket for celebrations and to mark important dates.

what if... 🥺 we don’t get the dance but as Lucy gets whisked off to her UC duties, she turns back, throws her ring to Tim and tells him to keep it safe? and he’s just standing there, holding it, watching her go and realizing things 😭😩
If someone’s face has to give away their feelings, my money is on our boy Eric Winter.

I don’t think Sylvie is/was upset about Greg Grainger ending things, I think she was realizing that there’s always going to be barrier in her future relationships because of her and Matt. What Greg said to Matt is important, and in some ways reveals a bit of where Sylvie is at, Greg said “I’m not worried about you”, because Matt wasn’t really the issue. “I’m worried about what Sylvie would do”, because he first hand saw the way she was still invested in his life. And Greg saw that Sylvie and Matt were enmeshed totally in each other’s lives, it wasn’t ever going to be as simple as her saying, “we were between nothing and something”.
And while they’ve both tried in their own ways to downplay what happened between them, at the heart of it, they both separately know that the way they feel for the other person isn’t going to go away.
They’ve managed to survive that night with this bandage of friendship. Because the idea of not being in each other’s lives, in a real and intimate way, is something neither of them can live with.
Tumblr media
Sylvie saw Matt hooking up with Sydney as confirmation that he wasn’t serious about her.
Matt saw Sylvie having a relationship with Greg as confirmation that she was able to move past him.
They both are working on bad intel, and it’s compounded by self doubt. Sylvie thought understood what she was saying with the “it’s always been you comment”, but only now is the idea of Sylvie really, truly loving him being spelled out for him. All he has to do is take it home. This changes everything about the last six odd months for Matt.

Okay, so we all agree they basically spent the whole 48 off with each other? Just wrapped up in this bubble of newness and love, and Matt didn’t even want to leave to get his stuff before shift, right? We agree.

What’s amazing to me, especially if they weren’t writing towards chenford from the start, is the set up of this episode.
Lucy is at the bar with Armstrong, Nolan and Jackson, and they’re discussing her love life. Armstrong literally tells her to not date a civilian. Tim is clearly skeptic of Caleb from the jump, but that has more to do with Lucy then the man. She ends the episode in moral peril - because she accepted a date with a civilian.
The following episode we watch Tim dig her out of the earth, and perform CPR while their team looks on. He stays the night at her hospital beside, and anticipates her needs in the episodes to come. The ring - c’mon, she left a ring so Tim would her, somehow he spots the ring, and then he knows! She’s there, she’s fighting, they can save her. When he gives the ring back to her? I died.
The writers basically pointed to a Chenford endgame with those words and actions...

Okay, I’ve had some time to sit with my thoughts after last nights episode, and @hamburgerheroes suggested I do a rewatch, which helped clear my head, and also reminded of this moment from all the way back in season 8.
Matt has always let Sylvie steer the ship. Which I think is new for both of them. Because it’s been a true partnership from the start, where when Sylvie needed support Matt stepped up and helped urge her forward, and when Matt has drawn back, Sylvie has been very clear that she is not letting him do that. This is interesting to me for several reasons.
The thing about ships, nautical but it also applies to ship ships, is that there are distinct jobs and actions that need to be carried out by people for things to keep running successfully. It’s requires trust, understanding and communication. There is dirty work, and sometimes it’s tedious. Simone has to call the shots. The ships I’ve enjoyed watching the most are the ones where both characters have overcome something separately or together, and have been made stronger for it.
No romantic partner in Sylvie’s past has let her do the steering. They pick the details, and force her into specific boxes so that they can keep her as more of a possession than a partner. The ships all sunk because it was an uneven partnership. It’s a little different with Matt because in a lot of ways Dawson steered their ship, but the thing to remember is that he also didn’t let her in all the way. He didn’t trust her to put them first, certainly he knew that she didn’t put him first, and that always ended in a fight. It was more like Dawson adjusted the course, and told Matt to shape up or ship out. Clearly I’m leaning into the nautical analysis, so here’s one more, there I ever partnership resulted in them running aground.
For me, this shows Matt has complete trust in, love for, and understanding of Sylvie. He trusts her to make the right calls at work, personally, and also he trusts her ability to make the right call for her. He loves her. While we the viewer are aware of the extent to Sylvie’s feelings, Matt has never heard her say it - she has said she’s wanted this for a long time, and that it’s always been him, but it’s Grainger who said the actual L word.
Matt saying he loves her, even if it doesn’t change things for them, but it’s important that she knows proves how well he understands Sylvie. This applies to how Sylvie is adopted, and her absolute belief that no one could ever love her the way she wants to be loved. It calls back to him supporting Sylvie in her journey with Julie by emphasizing that nothing has to change unless she wants it to. Matt Casey is willing to break his own heart to make her happy.
While I was annoyed that he had to have a conversation with Dawson to grasp the full depth of his own feelings, I am super appreciative of whoever in the writers room made sure they avoided him saying he will always love Dawson. I feel like last night really was the final nail in the coffin for Matt and Gabby.
I even liked that they cut out the part about how Sylvie is the one for him ‘now’, because that would feel wrong if said during a love confession to me. I hope they find a way to work in the other bit that was cut though!

Things I picked up re-watching the Rookie for the 78th time:
Episode 1x09 - The Standoff
Isobel is in the hospital, after being shot.
Grey: Why aren’t you at the hospital?
Tim: Because, I can’t do brain surgery.
Vs
Tim at Lucy bedside after her kidnapping.
