For the ships merelyan and merleon, any headcanons for what would they be like in a relationship? :D
(Headcanon Masterlist) (Full Masterlist)
I've already done Merleon, so let's do Merlyan!! I do kinda love Merlyan, and I think it's very underrated... so lets see what Gremlin spits out :D
Elyan has spent a lot of time outside of Camelot, and is deceptively smart and observant, despite his quietness/tendency to joke around a little. He figures out Merlin has, and regularly uses Magic fairly early on. Not early enough that he mentions it to anyone (Gwen, for example) because he has no particular attachment to this servant, but not late enough that Camelot's views have corrupted him. He keeps it to himself, obviously, maybe helps out with alibies and excuses on the down low, but otherwise just pretends he doesn’t know. But I also don't think they get together that quickly either. Their first meeting is very chaotic (which they definitely use in casual conversation to confuse others as often as possible), and Elyan is far too busy when they first get back, setting up his life (and Merlin is trying to deal with Morgana as well), so... they have ZERO time to like... get to actually know each other for quite a while. But Elyan is hyper aware of the funky little weirdo that came to rescue him, alongside the weirdo's friend The Actual Prince, and his sister, whom seems to adore said weirdo. So there's definitely a curiosity there, but they don't become tentative friends until a month or so after they get home.
And then a couple months later all that shit goes down, but they're solid mates by then, and are glad to see they both survived. Merlin is super proud of him, and though worried about his safety, is the first to pull him into a hug and call him Sir Elyan with a grin.
I reckon they FINALLY actually get together like.... years later (does Elyan ever die? Lol nope, don't remember that), once things have settled and the Golden Age is, if not already happening, in the process at least. Just before magic gets legalised, Elyan can't hold himself back, he needs Merlin to know that he has someone in his corner, no matter what, when everything goes down. Even after Merlin explains the whole story, including what happened to Elyan's father, Elyan is fully on his side, and gives him a big ol' hug. He deffo holds Merlin's hand when he tells everyone the truth and DEFFO pulls a sword if anyone reacts with anything less than "oh my God poor babey we're so sorry and we love you so much!! You're a hero!!".
They get together shortly after that, basically because Elyan has been nursing a crush for a while, and refuses to leave Merlin to deal with the stress and fear and the unknown of "after" alone, and Merlin has this epiphany moment of "oh my god. I don't know what I would do without him.". So yeah. Gwen had seen it coming forever. Lance (who I also specifically remember not dying) and Leon probably do as well, because they're smart and observant. Gwaine, Percival, and Mordred like... didn't see it coming until the few days before they officially started courting, and that's only because Merlin is terrible at hiding his feelings, and only realised said feelings a few days before they officially started courting. Arthur straight up has no clue that it's even a thing until either Gwen tells him, or he catches them snogging in a corridor somewhere.
Neither of them strike me as particularly affectionate in front of others. They'll ride next to each other on hunts/patrols/quests/whatever, they'll sleep near each other, they'll chat during training and go to the market together and stuff, they might even kiss each other on the cheek every once in a while. But Arthur is such a dumbass he's just like "Yes. Good friends do that. Gwaine kissed me on the cheek yesterday. Gaius kissed Merlin on the top of his head last week. That's just a thing people do, I'm sure of it.". Gwaine is just... like that, and Gaius is practically Merlin's father at this point. Arthur is stupid.
I think maybe later on, a couple years into the relationship, they're more touchy-feely with each other. Like... they'll rest their legs on each other, or sit on each other's laps whilst they're around a camp fire with the gang, but they're still pretty low-key about the kissing stuff.
ANYWAY!! They're a fairly quiet couple. They read together and have a lot of genuinely comfortable silences; they're both confident in the relationship and don't need to fill the air with loud gossip. BUT they will also sit and super quietly chatter away to each other in the corner of a room. They look so sweet and happy that no one really disturbs them, except maybe Gwaine. He tries to join in on the cuddling (cuddling here meaning they're just sat really close together, foreheads almost touching, as they giggle and plan pranks) as a joke once, and the two of them, without even breaking eye contact, just tuck Gwaine under their arms and pull him into the tangle as they keep on talking. He's very confused, and the others laugh at him so much, but he quickly gets over it and decides he's very comfortable and goes to sleep with Merlin scratching his scalp and Elyan holding him close. They know he was trying to embarrass them about how close and quiet they were being, but they don't care, and they also take the piss out of him for being parented by a couple who are about ten years his junior.
Speaking of parenting!!! They are absolutely the Mum and Dad of the group. Leon gets room to be a little chaotic now because he's got Ma and Da to take responsibility and make sure he doesn't do anything too stupid. They WILL scold The King for being reckless. They WILL force Percival to sit still whilst they take his temperature and make him drink water when he's sick. They WILL ensure that Lancelot goes to bed at a reasonable time. The only person it doesn't work on is Gwen, because she changed Elyan's diapers (and regularly reminds him of it when he gets too protective), and, magic or no, sword or no, she could easily hand their arses to them on a silver platter. Elyan and Merlin are fucking CAPTAINS of the Gwen is Awesome Squad.
I don't think they get legally married. They don't see the point, they're together, they're happy, they don't really care about anything else. The only reason they would get married would be to elevate Elyan's status so he's a Lord alongside Court Sorcerer Merlin. But that only needs to happen if Gwen doesn't marry Arthur, because being brother-in-law to The King makes him a Lord anyway (at least it does in my mind). HOWEVER! Merlin doesn’t have a surname, and Elyan does (or at least he and Gwen develop one, they’re the Smiths of course), one day, whether they’re married or not, Arthur casually introduces them as “Lords Elyan and Merlin Smith” without even thinking about it. No one notices at first, but then Merlin sits bolt upright in bed later that night, has a short epiphany moment, and then promptly cries. It’s messy, but also adorable. The two of them take every opportunity to introduce themselves as “Lord and Lord Smith” from that point forward; their friends only encourage it, and it’s incredible.
I feel like they move in together at a reasonable time, not straight away, not after years and years and years. If Gwen still marries Arthur in this AU, they move into her and Elyan’s old home, next to the Blacksmith’s, which Elyan runs in his spare time. He tries (and fails) to teach Merlin how to Smith, but he doesn’t have the patience and he always cheats by using magic when Elyan’s back is turned. To be fair to him though, Elyan fails miserably when Merlin tries to teach him magic, so they both have their specialties, and they both stick to them
I reckon they have NO intention of ever having kids, but they end up accidentally acquiring a little girl, through some sort of tragic hijink involving a monster killing her parents or something, and they can't bare to let her go. They are DOTING parents, but also responsible and all that other boring stuff. (Yes, the knights all fight over who gets to be favourite uncle. Yes, it’s Gwaine and we all know it.)
They're such a power couple, but people forget that they're together all the damn time because they're just not... kissy, in public. They're slightly softer with each other than they are with other people, but strangers probably wouldn't notice that at all, and their friends just get used to it so quickly they stop noticing it as well. They also like... trust each other, so if one of them gets hit on in a bar or something, the other doesn't even realise unless it looks like they're getting uncomfortable and need help. Elyan never minds when Merlin runs off with Arthur or Gwen for fun, and Merlin doesn't mind when Elyan messes about with the other knights because they've been through so much together, they know each other inside and out, there's never any reason to be concerned or jealous.
So yeah. It's super wholesome and relaxed and quietly doting :D
~
Hope you enjoyed!! #7 on This List will be Merlyan!! Though with a different first meeting AU!! Check out the description on the link :)
