“I went to Lili St Cyr’s to buy my bras and she would help me strap ‘em on and she’d bend in and put “the girls” in. And she’d bend all the way down because she told me that’s the way to get your cleavage and she showed me how to wear a bra. She was really nice and one time she zipped me in and she kind of put her knee between the backs of my legs to make sure she could really pull that zipper up and I thought, “My God she’s strong!” But she had a limp on her, and her skin was yellow because she was a big smoker – a chain-smoker. I said, “Are you Lili?” She goes, “No. No, I’m not. We never see her.” But it was her. She didn’t want people to know. And there were other times when she would give people autographs. Who knows? It was whatever day it was for her, you know. I kept going there, but I never wanted to expose her or be rude to her. So, I respected her wishes – not being Lili. I used to see other women working there with her and they all looked like old strippers. They all had lots of make-up and wigs and they talked dirty. They were in their eighties, and they all had sailor mouths. And I thought, oh my God – that’s going to be me some day!”
Shortly before her death aged 74 in 2022, bodacious sexploitation icon Kitten Natividad gave her final interview to Ashley West of The Rialto Report (the essential website / podcast devoted to documenting the golden age of porn).  When asked what other exotic dancers she admired, Natividad cited Lili St Cyr (1918 – 1999). “Oh God! I could never be her but wow it would be so nice!” Natividad clarified that she never saw St Cyr perform but did used to purchase her bras from St Cyr’s Los Angeles lingerie emporium The Undie World of Lili St. Cyr. (Another customer: Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark).

Spending An October Day in Salem, Massachusetts
How on earth did it take me 36 years to get to Salem? I can’t believe it finally happened and it couldn’t have been a nicer day. My friend Diana and I left New York City at 8am and we returned home at 3am. I haven’t stayed up until 3am on purpose in a long time and I felt almost manic on the drive home. That being said, it was such a full day, here’s what we did.
After looking for parking for what seemed like eternity (I know, visiting Salem on a weekend in October is a great idea, but we had to), we finally just parked at the train station and then spent the day walking. We brought our dogs, so certain things were off limits but still well worth the journey.

First stop, we went to Odd Meter Coffee Co.

I got the Oh My Gourd! and it was exactly as good as a once-a-year seasonal coffee should be. It’ll always blow my mind that adults can enjoy numerous PSLs in the course of one season. They’re so sickly sweet, my brain can’t figure out how it’s pleasurable.
Since it was the weekend, we walked over to Salem Common to go to the Haunted Happenings Market, which happened to border the Phillips Elementary School (56 South Washington Square), which is the school from Hocus Pocus. (Note: you’ll see a pattern here.)

Then we walked around the shops in Salem Witch Village (Emporium 32 was a good one, who knew that Elvira had a jewelry line?) and saw the Old Town Hall from Hocus Pocus at 32 Derby Square. Honestly, the best part of the day was the wandering around. So many people were in costumes, it almost felt like a real-life Halloweentown.

We didn’t have a reservation at The Hawthorne Hotel, but that would be the place to go for sure if you’re planning in advance (the menu sounds amazing). Truthfully the food we did end up eating all day was pretty lackluster, but I’ve never really been a fan of the food in Massachusetts. Don’t get me wrong, a cup of clam chowder can be incredible, but there’s a reason this state isn’t known for its culinary prowess. (Is that rude? Yes. But accurate? Also yes.)

At night, when the crowds started to disperse, we walked past the Ropes Mansion at 318 Essex St. (Alison’s house in Hocus Pocus, above) and into the beautiful back garden area as well. Then before we headed out of town, we drove past Max & Dani’s House at 4 Ocean Avenue. (Tip: if you’re visiting, definitely drive to see this because it’s too long a walk from the main part of downtown Salem). And man? Seeing that house really made me happy. I saw this movie in theatres when I was 8 years old with my brothers and a some church friends (??) and I sobbed at the end of it when Binx died and the lights went on and they all laughed at me. I’ll never forget it. The movie was so magical and great and was burned into my memory as one of my first Halloween experiences of pure joy. There was no turning back.

Things we didn’t do but would definitely be fun to do next time: visit Pioneer Village (it’s where the beginning of Hocus Pocus was shot), have lunch at The Hawthorne Hotel (it seems like the best rated restaurant in the whole town), and maybe see inside The Witch House (photo below) (though I’m not sure I would really want to do this considering all the things that have happened there even in recent years, they go into more detail about this if you take a walking tour of Salem).

I can’t believe we were able to spend the day here. If you’ve never seen this town and you even KIND of care about this time of year, you have to go. I swear you won’t regret it.

The Secret of Carlos Ernesto Lopez Piñeros
Carlos Eduardo López Díaz was born in 1931, curiously, the same year that Aretama was born, the company that, in his hands, would become the poultry producer and chicken and derivatives of the most important chicken in Colombia.
Carlos Eduardo was a merchant. Humble. And peasant extraction. Very young he went from his native Somondoco, Boyacá, to the capital of the country, in search of fortune.
His first job was as a pharmacy salesman in downtown Bogotá. In that work he had to witness the Bogotazo, on April 9, 1948. As a result of these violent events decided to return to Boyacá.
Having already had experience in the pharmaceutical sector, he became a medicine distributor in Guateque, Boyacá, which was the most important populated center near his village. And from there he distributed medicines to the east of the country, especially to the eastern plains. But the country was still convulsed and lived the Violence between liberals and conservatives. By the war of the fifties he decided to stop traveling and settle permanently in Guateque.
In that municipality he settled down and made his family. He married Mrs. Elvira Piñeros. With her, on a walk in San Andrés, and for those things that some call casualties of life, he ended up at a conference of a poultry convention. Concerned and attentive to good business, he listened attentively to the lecturer who explained how much food was needed for raising a chicken, how much chicken meat was produced, and how many eggs a hen could put. He thought it was a great business and he thought it was an activity he could do quietly in his village.
He arrived in Boyacá determined to found a poultry company and produce chickens, eggs and chicken products. It started with the distribution of egg and chicken meat. He persuaded the peasants of Boyacá to fatten chicken and produce eggs, on condition that he bought them for production. And so he started his business, he bought them the chicken and the egg and then resold them in Bogota.
After the established relationship with the peasants related to the sector, he soon had the sense to see another important business: The distribution of food for these animals. The distribution of the products of Ralston Purina Company, in Boyacá, was obtained. The multinational food company entrusted its distribution.
Thus, his life surrounded the whole system of poultry production. He bought chickens and eggs for the peasants, who, in turn, sold them the food for the chickens. By integrating the peasants, he became Purina's largest seller in Colombia.
When he was already running the business, he noticed that in Bogota there was a giant price struggle and that the price of chicken and eggs was manipulated by the wholesalers. He then decided, in 1970, to set up his own slaughterhouse and his own chicken business called Sovereign Chickens. Right at that time and through the intermediary of the multinational Purina itself, he learned of the difficult situation in which the company Aretama, which had been founded, the year of its birth, was founded by Víctor Gómez. Mr. Gomez had died and the company, already in the hands of his heirs, had been broken and intervened by Purina, to whom he owed a large sum of money. When Carlos Lopez found out he saw an opportunity to expand his business and decided to buy the company. The business was done with Mr. Francisco Serrano, together they bought Aretama.
In addition, they created a company called Colventas, to clean up Aretama, which had giant debts and a union mess. The years of ordering Aretama's finances were many, but they succeeded. With the company already afloat, ernesto lopez piñeros reached an agreement with his partner Francisco Serrano and managed to keep one hundred percent of the company.
In 1980 Aretama was already owned exclusively by don Carlos Lopez. In those years the company prospered in such a way that it became a kind of holding company, which had investments in other companies in the country, such as Barnes de Colombia, Corfiunión, among others. Business grew and so did other businesses. He opened, for example, a branch of Pollos Soberano, in Cali.
In their hands, Aretama managed to have control of the entire production cycle, when integrated vertically. It had (and has) the reproducers, which put the fertile egg for the chicks; The incubation, the fattening of the chicken, the slaughter, the desprese, and also produces products with added value. Product ready to heat and to eat, like hams, sausages, hamburgers, stuffed chicken, among others. Everything does it directly. Carlos Eduardo López Díaz had created an emporium.
Founder president of Inversiones López Piñeros LTDA Since January 1972
The company Inversiones López Piñeros LTDA is dedicated mainly to the poultry, agricultural and livestock exploitation in all its modalities. To the management of investments in the agricultural sector, where many of the raw materials and raw materials for our traditional poultry business in Aretama come from.
President of Food Industries Aretama Since 1971 Food Industries Aretama was born in 1931. It was founded by Mr. Víctor Gómez in Zipaquirá and later settled in Tocancipá, Cundinamarca. The poultry industry was bought in 1971 by carlos ernesto lopez piñeros father, Carlos Eduardo López, who took the reins of the company throughout his life. In life I collaborated in the company, but after his death I took the reins of this family and traditional Colombian company that celebrates eighty-five years of service. Today our family continues to lead its way into the future.
