You know how the scent of athelas gets wildly different descriptions depending on the person?
Concept: part of the reason it was so prized by the Numenorean Exiles is because it allowed them to smell the air of Numenor again

In this month's A Sense of History column, Simon J. Cook continues to climb the stairs of various towers in Tolkien's works, both Middle-earth and not. This month, he focuses on the three inland "dark towers" of The Lord of the Rings and how they connect to the palantíri and other modes of seeing and imposing one's will in Middle-earth. These towers provide different insights than the tower at Elostirion, discussed last month, that looks out upon the sea. The dark towers—and later in the story, the Elf-towers as well—take on a different role that looks not outward to the numinous West but concentrates on the machinations that will come to be preserved as the history of Middle-earth.
You can read Simon's article "Seeing Stones in Dark Towers" here.

I was tagged by @melestasflight to share "a whole-ass scene" from my WIPs. Here's one of my recent ones:
Elanor wrapped her arms around her waist and watched until her father became little more than a speck upon the horizon and then nothing, gone from her sight. The shadows grew long about her and the daylight faded. Still she stood upon the hilltop, watching. As the sun sank beneath the hills before her and fell into the glimmering Sea, Elanor imagined she could see the white sail of a ship crossing the distant band of the Sea, treading the long waves between the Grey Havens and Valinor. She closed her eyes and leaned against the base of Elostirion, bending all her thought to her father and the West. If she strained, she could almost hear the murmur of the waves as they rolled beneath the ship and smell the night rain as the green shores drew near. But such thoughts were no more than a flight of fancy. The West lay far out of reach, and already Sam had passed to where she could not follow. With one last look over her shoulder, she turned and made her way home.

We are playing a new game and need your help!
Participants in the game have submitted plot bunnies which will be voted on anonymously. The chosen author will run the development of the story that we will then brainstorm and write as a group. Assigned scenes will be about 300-500 words each, written in their own style but in continuity with the rest of the story and picking up where the previous writer left off. It will hopefully be very fun and informal!
If you'd like to watch, or play with us next time, join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/Gyt2EtSv6. We talk about Bagginshield. A LOT.

Round One Plot Summaries:
PLOT ONE:
The Little Burglar: A Dwarven King frees a city from Goblin rule. After the castle is purged, slaves of all fae races are found, fed, and treated for their wounds. The King stumbles upon one that is smaller and more fragile than the rest. At first, they think it a male child of Man or Elf, but upon further scrutiny it is discovered he is actually a mature Hobbit. He doesn’t speak, and no one knows whether he understands their language, but it is clear he plans to do as he pleases now that he’s free. He seems to vanish at will and steals all kinds of things from under anyone’s nose. The little nuisance also seems to be following the King around, appearing only when the King is alone. Determined to gain the Hobbit's trust, the King tries to find ways to coax the little creature out of hiding.
PLOT TWO:
Western - Settlers are heading West, looking for wide open spaces and a new place to call home. Many are settling in the new town of Erebor and word quickly spreads of the vast number of opportunities there. It is new, it is unique, and it is exciting. The trouble is getting there. Travel by train only goes halfway. The rest must either be by foot or by wagon if one can afford it and aren't afraid of being attacked by natives or bandits. If a family is lucky and survive the trip, they will no doubt prosper and be under the watchful eye of Marshall Thorin Durin and his Deputy Marshall Frerin Durin. They are brothers who have sworn to protect the people in this new community from a band of outlaws led by the gunslinger Azog the Defiler. BIlbo Baggins is a school teacher who is looking for an adventure. He accepts a teaching position in the West and buys a train ticket to Erebor. Bonus pts for death of a minor character (Frerin) and the appearance of Dis and Gandalf.
PLOT THREE:
Tangled AU - Stolen from his family as a baby by the evil wizard Saruman, Bilbo is raised alone in the tower of Elostirion, in the mountains west of the Shire. He is never allowed to cut his hair which glows like "ten thousand sparks of white radiance, shot with glints of the rainbow," possessing strange powers that the wizard guards jealously. With only his books to keep him company, Bilbo dreams of adventure and the outside world, though he's been raised to believe that the world is dangerous and all races would covet his magic hair, to his ruin. One day a Dwarrow Prince scales his tower, and Bilbo promptly knocks him out with a frying pan.
Bonus: Thorin tries to braid Bilbo's ridiculous amount of hair but it's so much that he has to have Fili and Kili help him. The dwarves all lose their mind a little over so much sparkly beautiful hair the color of living mithril, but when it's lost they see it as a battle scar and respect him even more.
PLOT FOUR:
Journalist!Bilbo/Vigilante!Thorin - Bilbo’s major is in investigative journalism and he follows up on a dangerous lead only to land himself in hot water. He is saved by some gun wielding manic in the nick of time, but it is really weird how his savior kind of looks like his new roommate...
PLOT FIVE:
Kidnapping Adventure - While passing through the Shire, Thorin is abducted by orcs. Bilbo was camping nearby and tried to help him, but was taken along. They manage to escape, but they don't know where they are, and given Thorin's sense of direction, and Bilbo's lack of experience out of the Shire, they take a very meandering path trying to find their way home. One of the central themes of the fic would be understanding people who are very different from you, whether it's the cultural differences between dwarves and hobbits, but also between them and the people and creatures they encounter like ents, mushroomlings, and other more fantastical creatures usually not featured in Tolkiens' legendarium.

Tagged by @cairistiona7  Thank you!
Rules: If you’re tagged, make a rec list of your own fics that you’re most proud of. The ones you personally want people to read because you know they’re good. The ones you get extra excited when you get comments on them because people are responding to what you know is your best work. As part of the list, say why you’re proud of them! Participant’s choice on how many that is and where you draw the line on pride, but the more the better. Bonus points for fics that you like to reread yourself or fics that have low engagement because they’re in a small fandom or an unpopular ship/trope. Then tag however many people you feel like to continue the game. (If you want a guide number, try for seven or however many fics you listed)
Secondary rule: If you get tagged and you’re not a fic writer, consider doing the same for art you’ve done or meta you’ve written that you’re proud of.
Tertiary rule: This is the time to be the opposite of humble! Hype your own stuff! Share why you’re proud of something. Do some self love! And please give the game a chance even if you haven’t written much or are just starting out etc etc.
Do or do not – there is no tag.
All these are in the Tolkien fandom – the list got a bit longer than I had planned, even with vigorous weeding (and would therefore probably look partly different if I made it at another time). They’re all stories that I like to reread for one reason or another. Even if I felt a ‘must edit’ itch for some of the older ones as well *g* I’ve tried to say something more than the original summary for them, but didn’t succeed for all.
  Eriador
An excess of weather - Life in Eriador can often be harsh, even more so when the weather becomes as much an enemy as Orcs or wolves. A look at how the Fell Winter of 2911 affected the Dúnedain.
A gapfiller story with mostly OC Rangers. What I like about this one is how the circumstances test the Rangers to their limits, and in some cases beyond.
Troll country - Where were the Rangers when Thorin & co. encountered those trolls?
A gapfiller I didn’t know I needed until the plotbunny turned up
Out of time - FA 83 - King Elessar visits the North and realises something that has been bothering him
There are precious few stories about the Fourth Age – another gapfiller I had to have.
Inheritance – Recipe fic:  A taste from history in two drabbles and a double drabble - originally written for the October 2014 challenge, Sweet or Savoury, at the Lotr-genfic LJ community; my element was 'spicy'.
My only recipe fic, and therefore also my best recipe fic *g*
 2nd Age
Et Eärello Andorenna utúlien - Númenor: thoughts upon arrival and departure.
There’s a lot more to explore for both Elros and Ar-Pharazôn I think, and maybe someday I will. Until then, this short sketch will have to do.
Spindrift - Of the seven palantíri, it is said that the one kept in the tower of Elostirion is the chief, and that Elendil looked in it often to alleviate the yearning of exile. This vignette examines one such viewing in the year 3423 of the Second Age.
Opening - Sometime early in the second millennium of the Second Age: a moonlit night in Eregion, and two craftsmen anxiously wait the unveiling of their latest work.
 Other
Edge of the world - After the Downfall it was believed by the remnants of the Dúnedain that the top of Meneltarma rose once more above the sea level. If so, sailors of later Ages may have found it on occasion.
Recall - Thengel, captain of Gondor, deals with a small family crisis, considers the past and receives some news.
Holiday - Snapshots of a summer spent in Dol Amroth. Gimli is ambivalent about it all.
This entire fic was written to justify the use of one specific word in a Tolkienian context. I’ll leave it up to the reader to spot the word.
 Collections
Back to Middle-earth month 2012 - A collection of the various drabbles and short stories I wrote for B2MEM 2012
A very miscellaneous bunch of stories, but one I’m pretty happy with. Definitely my best BMEM year.
Tales of the North - banner
And in hope… –  Arwen finally understands one particular vision she saw in Galadriel's Mirror, and starts work on a special project.
Watching from afar – It is said in The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen that Arwen watched over Aragorn in thought. At times, this must have been a harrowing experience.
Envinyalë –  About a week after their wedding, Aragorn and Arwen spend an evening by themselves. Arwen has plans, but the evening does not turn out quite the way she had in mind.
A small collection of three stories in which I explored Arwen a bit, of course also against the background of my related stories on Aragorn and the Dúnedain.
 AUs
Some that live - It is 3013, and Orcs are raiding and destroying Dúnedain farms in Eriador. Aragorn sets out to stop the raids. Alternate timeline leading up to the War of the Ring.
This story… During the writing its working title was “the Heap O’Angst”, and I’ve also been known to refer to it as “the story that ate my life”. It took some work to get out of its headspace once it was done. Without giving away too much, it’s an exploration of honour, guilt, redemption, friendship, loyalty. It may also be the best story I’ve written so far.
As may be obvious, I like writing AUs, both long ones and shorter stories, because they allow exploring different approaches to characters, events and themes They’re also a lot of fun to play with: “what breaks if I change this…?”
Unto the ending of the world - Dark AU, diverging from the end of the Two Towers: Sauron regains his Ring in Ithilien, and a very bleak world emerges for those who survive the Ringwar to make their way in.
This is the only still ongoing story in the list. I started it in 2007 and am still writing it. I do actually know how it ends, but I’m a slow writer to begin with, and it’s taking just a bit longer than I expected to get where I want to go – plus I spent some time away from it writing the Heap O’Angst. The basic idea was quite simple, Sauron gets the One Ring, so what happens now? Quite a lot, as it turns out, and not much of it good.
Elenion Ancalima - Nerdanel wonders whether perhaps it would have been better if Fëanáro had not listened to his father.
Still standing - Six vignettes from Halbarad's point of view - from the siege of Minas Tirith until the day after Aragorn's coronation

For @tolkienocweek Day 4: Mary Sues
Elenna, youngest child and only daughter of Elendil
Tumblr media
Basic info: Youngest child of Elendil and Meril, born in Andúnië in SA 3259.
Childhood: As the youngest child and only daughter of Elendil, Elenna had quite a happy childhood. Her parents had not expected to have any more children when she arrived, so both of them doted on her, and Amandil spoiled her absolutely rotten. Her mother was a scholar and spent most of her time away in Armenelos, so Elendil took care of the greater part of her early education. Then, when Elenna was 10 years old, her mother returned to Andúnië for a break. They went to the market and did not take an escort, in spite of Elendil’s protests. They were targeted due to her mother’s very vocal opinions against Ar-Pharazôn. Elenna made a narrow escape, but her mother was arrested and executed for treason. From then on Elendil took her education much more seriously, and taught her how to fight, with and without weapons. Elenna became withdrawn for a few years while she processed the trauma, and swore to fight the King’s Men. Aside from training, she went on to study Law, to understand better what was happening in her country and how the Faithful could fight this from within.
Exile years in Rómenna: In SA 3,303 Amandil took his family and the remainder of the Faithful from the Andustar on to Rómenna, where more of his people had already gathered. Amandil arranged it so that his whole family lived in a single house. The Faithful from the entire country were confined to a single city, and space was scarce. During this time Elenna grew closer to her brothers and their families, but also got a chip on her shoulder from their incessant taunts about her being a woman who wanted to fight. She became eager to prove herself, to show she was a woman of the line of Elros, and she would not be silenced like they had silenced her mother. Her brothers were given roles of leadership among their people, and she wanted to show that she deserved one as well.
Refugee in Lindon: In SA 3,316 Amandil sailed for Aman. He had made arrangements, years prior, to set up a refugee camp in Lindon, in the lands of Gil-galad, in case things went south in Númenor sooner than he expected. He then tasked his granddaughter with leading the children of the Faithful there, before sailing West himself. Elenna then led one ship across the Sea to Lindon, where she met Gil-galad. They fell in love with each other, but neither admitted to their feelings until many years later.
The Downfall: Most of the already exiled Dúnedain dreamt with the wave on the days that led up to it. Elenna travelled to Forlond to consult with Gil-galad what this could mean, and this is where Elendil would find her a few days later (the journey from Númenor usually takes several weeks, but Númenor is no more, and Elendil’s fleet has been carried to Middle Earth by Ulmo). They spent a few months in Forlond, figuring out where to go next, and making arrangements for the foundation of Arnor. Elenna went with her father to Elostirion first, and then to Annúminas.
Arnor: Lacking natural boundaries, Arnor is exposed to attacks from its Northern and Southern borders. Elendil created the Rangers corps to guard the borders of Arnor, and named his daughter Captain of the Second Company. Elenna thus spent much time on patrol, protecting her father’s lands, and securing the allegiance of the tribes of Men that inhabited Eriador at the time. She also made a trip to Harad in an undercover mission to gain intel about the situation in Umbar and the extent to which the King’s Men controlled it.
Marriage: While living in Arnor, she was frequently away on patrol, and only visited Lindon in very counted occasions. She ran into Gil-Galad in an inn on the way to Imladris one fateful evening, and they agreed to travel to Elrond's house together, as her father had also journeyed there. Following an incident in the baths, they confessed their feelings to each other and became engaged. Elenna would then become Queen Consort of Lindon, and as such she worked to strengthen the alliance between Lindon and Arnor, and Gondor. She also became the first mortal woman to bear a half-elven child, when their only daughter Crown Princess Silmariën II was born.
Last Alliance: Knowing he would not return from the war, Gil-Galad entrusted the rule of Lindon to his daughter, and Elenna traveled with him first to Imladris, then on to the very gates of Mordor. She fought alongside her brothers and father, and stood by them when Elendil and Gil-Galad took Sauron down. Isildur's refusal to cast away the Ring drove a wedge between them, and after burying her father, and giving her husband's remains to the Sea, she returned home. Elenna would never quite recover from the losses and the grief, and decades later, she went out to the shore and began walking, never to be seen again.

Many treasures and great heirlooms of virtue and wonder the Exiles had brought from Númenor; and of these the most renowned were the Seven Stones
Tumblr media
'They set up Stones at Minas Anor, and at Minas Ithil, and at Orthanc in the ring of Isengard. The chief and master of these was under the Dome of Stars at Osgiliath before its ruin.
Tumblr media
At smallest they were about a foot in diameter, but some, certainly the Stones of Osgiliath and Amon Sûl, were much larger and could not be lifted by one man.
Tumblr media
'Who knows where the lost Stones of Arnor and Gondor now lie buried, or drowned deep? But one, at least Sauron must have obtained and mastered to his purposes. I guess that it was the Ithil-stone, for he took Minas Ithil long ago and turned it into an evil place: Minas Morgul, it has become.'
Tumblr media
'Now it appears that, as the rock of Orthanc has withstood the storms of time, so there the palantír of that tower has remained. But alone it could do nothing but see small images of things far off and days remote. Very useful, no doubt, that was to Saruman; yet it seems that he was not content. Further and further abroad he gazed, until he cast his gaze upon Barad-dûr. Then he was caught!'
Tumblr media
It was afterwards believed that needing knowledge, but being proud, and trusting in his own strength of will, [Denethor] dared to look in the palantír of the White Tower. None of the Stewards had dared to do this, nor even the kings Eärnil and Eärnur, after the fall of Minas Ithil when the palantír of Isildur came into the hands of the Enemy; for the Stone of Minas Tirith was the palantír of Anárion, most close in accord with the one that Sauron possessed.
Tumblr media
It is said that the towers of Emyn Beraid... were raised by Gil-galad for Elendil, his friend; and the Seeing Stone of Emyn Beraid was set in Elostirion, the tallest of the towers.
Tumblr media
But we are told it was unlike the others and not in accord with them; it looked only to the Sea. Elendil set it there so that he could look back with 'straight sight' and see Eressëa in the vanished West; but the bent seas below covered Númenor for ever.
Tumblr media
Thither Elendil would repair, and thence he would gaze out over the sundering seas, when the yearning of exile was upon him; and it is believed that thus he would at whiles see far away even the Tower of Avallónë upon Eressëa, where the Master-stone abode, and yet abides.

Palantír of Elostirion
@huevember 2022, Day 11-15 pink-purple
For my prompts, I'm opening The Silmarillion to a random page and making a quick sketch of whatever my eye lands on. (I'm also doing one sketch every 5 days since every day is a bit much for me right now.)
"It is said that the towers of Emyn Beraid were not built indeed by the Exiles of Númenor, but were raised by Gilgalad for Elendil, his friend; and the Seeing Stone of Emyn Beraid was set in Elostirion, the tallest of the towers. Thither Elendil would repair, and thence he would gaze out over the sundering seas, when the yearning of exile was upon him; and it is believed that thus he would at whiles see far away even the Tower of Avallónë upon Eressëa, where the Master-stone abode, and yet abides. These stones were gifts of the Eldar to Amandil, father of Elendil, for the comfort of the Faithful of Númenor in their dark days, when the Elves might come no longer to that land under the shadow of Sauron. They were called the Palantíri, those that watch from afar; but all those that were brought to Middle-earth long ago were lost."
(Regarding the size of this palantir, Unfinished Tales states: "At smallest they were about a foot in diameter, but some, certainly the Stones of Osgiliath and Amon Sûl, were much larger and could not be lifted by one man." I imagine the Palantir in the Tower Hills was not a mobile version.)

The Dúnedain (the men of Númenor) divided the stones amongst the lands of Middle-Earth. The known locations were: "Annúminas, Amon Sûl, and Elostirion in Arnor, and Osgiliath, Orthanc, Minas Ithil, and Minas Anor in Gondor." There was one stone left in the Tower of Avallónë, which was the place of the Master-Stone. The Tower of Avallónë overlooked the island of Tol Eressëa, and it was said that the first thing you would see from the seas, was the tower reaching the air.

Only four stones have been confirmed to be lost. Two of which died with Arvedui, the fifteenth and last king of the Arthedain. The stones lost where those of Annúminas and Amon Sûl. The stone in Osgiliath was lost in the Kin-strife, where many men became enraged when a child of both Númenorean blood and Middle Men blood was born. The fourth and final one got detroyed in the War of the Ring, when the tower of Barad Dûr collapsed in the land of Mordor.
The stone of Elostirion vame with Frodo to the Undying Lands, while the two stones in Minas Arnor and Orthanc remained on Middle-Earth.

For the past several months as part of our A Sense of History column, Simon J. Cook has been pursuing the question of towers in Tolkien, beginning with the mysterious tower of "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" and into the towers of Tolkien's Ardaverse, currently The Lord of the Rings.
This month's column follows the "red thread" of Valarin aid to the Fellowship in The Lord of the Rings. Returning from the West-gazing palantír of Elostirion, which is said to show a glimpse of Varda in Valinor, Gildor Inglorion bestows a blessing of Varda's protection upon Frodo. Simon traces the miraculous influence of Varda, revealed via a palantír in a tower, throughout the ensuing narrative that becomes an essential element of The Lord of the Rings.
You can read Simon's article "Crossroads" here.
