what I adore about show Ellie is that she legitimately feels like a 14 year old. I love game ellie more than anything but she always came off as older, around 16-17 to me.
Show Ellie is 14 no questions asked. She eats like a monster, she thinks it’s hilarious to annoy this old man, she’s still got innocence and fear in her even though shes been through everything she’s been through. And game Ellie does too of course but it’s way less obvious and the vulnerability even comes a bit later on in the game.
Show Ellie is still just a kid. A kid born in the QZ who’s never left the safety of it, suddenly facing these life or death situations with only one person there to protect her. I just really really love what they’ve done to show us that Ellie’s been through a lot already in her life, sure, but at the end of the day, she’s a child who still needs protection and care and love.

Henry’s steadfast endeavor to sustain some semblance of a worthy childhood for Sam is nearly the antithesis of game Henry’s strict survivalist core. And I kinda love that change. In the game, he wouldn’t let him pack the toy robot. To him, there was no room for the like. They carried what they needed, and essentials were the only need. Game Henry was more preoccupied by prerequisites and the fundamentals to warrant survival for both him and his brother. Not that this wasn’t the case with Henry in the series, but the two weren’t mutually exclusive. He took their livelihood a step further. This iteration of Henry didn’t just want Sam to survive. He wanted him to live. He allowed the privilege of keeping little mementos. He offered Sam crayons and paint he had packed to color themselves as superheroes and decorate their living space. He allowed a silver lining of childlike wonder and creativity to embellish the scenery and to bask in away from the cruel and savage world they lived in. He called him “Super Sam” and painted him a superhero mask to both boost his confidence and endorse his innocence. Henry was Sam’s rock to lean on, and an outlet for the endearing concessions of a child to persevere. Kids may not have the luxury of habitual childhoods in the landscape of The Last of Us, but Henry was still trying to procure that. And in spite of everything. It wasn’t just to endure and survive. It was to indulge and live

could i get a number one please? i don't think i've seen that xover before.
Yes, you can. I've actually been doing a lot of work on this one recently so it shooooould hopefully have enough momentum to post soon on Ao3? Anyway this one will cover a lot of fun tropes I haven't gotten to play with yet, and it'll star Danny and Dani/Ellie.
* High School Undercover/Transfer Student Danny Fenton * Fake/Undercover Family * Chaos Phantom Siblings * Danny is way overpowered and is *horrendously bad* at hiding it * Ghost Prince Danny trying to do Ghost Prince things * (Intentional) Dimensional Travel
--
“Hi!” Ellie said, with what he was sure was a blinding smile.
“Sister,” Danny got out before he was being choked, grasping at her arms.
“Uh,” His classmates sat or stood as if waiting for an attack, eyes wide and jaws tight. Iida, as Danny had learned in the period following his quirk assessment, was first to recover. Pushing his glasses up with one hand, the other flew into a chopping rage, “You are not to supposed to be on school grounds! Fenton, this is a heinous disregard of UA’s very explicit rules on visitations! Do you at least have a pass?”
“Oh, he’s angry,” Ellie said. She loosed one arm to make grabby hands for Danny’s lunch. Danny swatted it away with a vengeance, “what’d you do this time, Danny?”
“He’s not wrong,” Danny huffed, smacking the other hand before it closed on his drink, “Ellie, what the hell. You’re not supposed to be here! If someone catches you-”
“If you can’t catch me, nobody can,” She said proudly, sliding down from Danny’s back and plopping back into the space between him and one of the other kids. Todoroki? Todoroki was looking on, completely unbothered, like this was just another Tuesday for him.
“How did you even get in?” Midoriya asked, relaxing enough to continue eating, but now looking frequently around the cafeteria. He looked a little pale in the face. Well, paler.
“I snuck in, duh.” Ellie made another stab for his tray. Danny slid it expertly out of her way with a flick of his hand. She stopped to squint at him, as if daring him to interfere again. “This school is a lot bigger than the old one. Talk about an upgrade. You get yelled at by any teachers yet? Shoved into any lockers? Gotten any swirlies? Any new stupid puns on your name? ‘Fenturd’ is in desperate need of competition.”
“I swear on the Ancients,” Danny hissed under his breath. Once again his stolen fork angled down, and once again it clinked on the table, “One week. I asked for one week!” Clink. “You couldn’t even give me-” Clink, “-one day!” Clink.
“Sounds like you got shoved into a locker,” Ellie said mercilessly, “you’re grumpy today. What for? Did you make any friends yet? What about bullies? It’s just day one, Danny. If you’re getting bullied on day one, there’s just no hope for you.”

(Also there is a lot of really good DPxMHA fics on Ao3! When you have some time, you should check them out!)

Anna Williams, Marlene's bestie: If you could please find my daughter someone to bring her up and make sure she's safe.
Marlene: Ugh, fine, I guess. *dumps Ellie in a FEDRA run orphanage/military school, an organization she's at war with and constantly has her cronies blow FEDRA shit up.*
Me: Kay, kay, kay, kay...That's not how you fulfill your best friend's dying wish but hey! Look for the light, Marlene. Find some brain cells while you're at it.

ellie and joel are both not the tidiest people, mostly because joel never really had the time pre-apocalypse and after it didn't matter, and ellie was forced to keep her few belongings somewhat in order (but she hates it)
so once they settle into their house, it really is a settling in process as they spread out whatever they have and the new things they find all over the house.
there's several blankets in the living room, some on the couch, some on the floor or armchairs. an unstable looking pile of books keeps growing next to the coffee table, whose surface is scattered with a variety of hair ties and half-finished sketches.
they leave their shirts hanging over kitchen shirts and shoes too far in the hallway and sometimes laundry piles up and neither of them cares too much. it helps in a way neither of them expected, sharing space like this.
their bedrooms are still personal, but ellie's has just as much of joel's stuff as his has of hers. all the tension they've been carrying throughout their lives finally has places to go, leaving them soft and open and glued to each other to fill the holes slowly opening up.
ellie curls up in joel's sweatshirt on the couch, scooching to the side to make place for him just to deposit her head in his lap. they share a blanket and watch a movie while he runs his fingers through her hair, and what's a bit of domestic chaos when it means they have finally found peace within themselves.

(tlou2 spoilers) i know a criticism of hbo's tlou retelling of the story (from what i understand) is that in the game it was narratively important that joel and ellie were not similar. i can see how that could be a jarring / irreconcileable difference for some long time fans (who amongst us does not resent change) but as someone who's not a videogame person and is meeting these characters for the first time through the show i personally love the cosmic/fated/meant-to-be/two-birds-of-a-feather-flock-together / whatever-is-wrong-with-you-is-also-wrong-with-me / whatever-our-souls-are-made-of-yours-and-mine-are-the-same lens through which the show spins us the yarn of ellie and joel (and listening to the podcast + the reasoning behind the changes, i'd dare say it elevates the source material. but i can't yet back up my controversial statements until i play the game)
the beating heart of the story of the show is that they sense this something within each other, this thread of familiarity. that they are foils but also mirrors is both the greatest joy of their lives and itself the catalyst that leads to their tragedy. that it's not only a found family story but a story about recognition of the self through the other
the poetics of filling not only a father and daughter-shaped hole in each other but also guardian and protegee, mentor and mentee, best friends, platonic soulmates, that that iself is intrinsically indivisible from the tragedy of how their story ends, that it's two sides of the same coin. the pain was real and so was the joy. there's no tragedy without recognition, that to avoid the tragedy is to avoid the love altogether. am i making sense?
to be joel and ellie is to walk together towards that ultimate painful end, that what makes their love for each other is the choices they make and those choices are themselves fanned by the exhilaration of their similarity, like how grasshoppers can be grasshoppers all their lives but if they swarm they unlock this higher plane of being alive by turning into locusts, even if being a locust means disaster, means desolation (it is, after all, a story about the terrible things people will do out of love). it's still better to have been a locust than to never have met others like you at all
that there was never going to be another way things could end, but to avoid that end (to avoid the tragedy) is to never have been joel and ellie at all. basically:
