Short demonstration- using the back elbow as a counter attack against an attacking opponent, this is just two of many and nothing in fighting is gospel anything can happen at any time, just an interesting weapon to add to your muay thai arsenal.

I'm questioning whether or not somebody I know has had any legit martial arts training We've talked about it on several occasions but they claim they don't know what style they took. They claim it centered on kicking and stancework but wasn't TKD. they also claimed it might've been MMA classes or something like it. first off what kind of Martial art could it be and how can I tell if they're lying to me? I'm pretty sure they're not telling the truth but I just wanna know how to approach?
When you said kicking and stancework, I immediately thought Taekwondo myself. But if they said it isn’t, it definitely probably isn’t. A Taekwondo student would [hopefully] know they’re taking TaeKwonDo. From taking Taekwondo myself I’d have to say it probably wasn’t either. It doesn’t sound like any form of Karate I can recall off the top of my head. But, I have to agree I don’t think the person in question is being truthful and here’s why and how to tell: *MMA would definitely include groundwork. And it’d include handstrikes, kneestrikes, and elbowstrikes. It would incorporate a rounded training approach in which the student would have adept knowledge of on-foot fighting and groundwork [grappling, wrestling, ground fighting]. If they’re claiming MMA lessons, start grilling them on some groundwork strategies. If they know anything about on-foot fighting stay away from using that to determine if they know what they’re talking about. Maybe give them a situation or something of the like such as “How do you avoid, get out of, or handle [insert some sort of chokehold or hyperextensive hold, which are the most basic forms of submission]?” If they can’t give you a proper answer or at least half seem like they’re talking about, you know they’re lying about that.
* Most martial arts schools and teachers DO NOT just teach the fighting techniques. They instill the virtues of the art, the values and principles of it. They create students that are as mentally adept in the art as they are physically. They help to develop among many things, self discipline, situation evaluation, and respect. [If this person isn’t exhibiting any knowledge of the core values of almost every martial art, there’s your answer again.]
* Most martial arts teach defense on the ground at SOME LEVEL, even if albeit small. I can’t see a martial arts program where they’re only being taught kicks and stances. There’s much, much more to martial arts programs that focus primarily on kicks and stances, like some branches of Kung Fu and again Taekwondo. Especially if this person is insistent they were being taught self defense, most programs are thorough.
* Looking at the more obvious and logical part of this, they’ve said they don’t know what martial art they took/ are taking? That’s a very blatant load of bullshit. Almost every school/combat center/dojo/etc has it clearly stated what they teach. Usually on the damn sign or right on the door? Or when you go to sign up for lessons, they tell you what it is they teach or offer. Or in worse case scenario you can discern by the language the commands are in, what you call your instructor, etc. There had to be some clues at the very least that they could’ve used to determine that. Nobody is going to train in something and not know what the hell they’re training in or what it’s called.
* I’d be asking to see their belts or anything they have from these “Classes”, even maybe a Gi. And out of experience I can tell you something right now, Martial Artists would not lose their Belts. Maybe their Gis and trophies in a move, but not their belts. Absolutely not. Belts are not worthless to martial artists. They are a clear representation of our gut wrenching hard work and the progression of it. They are the chronicle of our journey in the martial art. There’s no way in hell they just got lost if the martial artist in question could help it to every extent. If they’re telling you they don’t have them, start doubting. If they do, feel free to send in photos or maybe show them to a martial artist close to you who knows how to discern fake belts from real ones, because unfortunately you can buy belts online and shit.
* The only thing you can really ask for to prove it is a demonstration. A spar with somebody or even some demos on a heavy bag. If it’s obvious they don’t what they’re doing, then there’s your answer. In general, liars tend to use excuses as to not prove themselves or maybe even try to use a “principle” of the art to back up not demonstrating it. That’s bullshit. Unless it’s some sacred cultural martial art that is in turn extremely sacred to them, there are no known values that I know of to be in place stating a martial artist at any rate cannot prove their knowledge to someone doubting them. Showing off and demonstrating are two different things.
I hope this helps, as it seems in this case you have a liar on your hands who is trying hard to impress you. If I can help any further, let me know!Best of luck to you.
