On Monday, a three-judge panel of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals instituted an emergency injunction of President Biden’s student debt cancellation program. The verdict granted standing to sue to an alleged plaintiff which has said publicly and in writing that it had nothing to do with the lawsuit, and no relationship with the office that filed it. The ruling, in effect, turned a non-plaintiff into a plaintiff.

It’s the kind of decision that makes you wonder what the law is, and whether it matters what it says. But the conservative judiciary could see these same tactics used by determined plaintiffs with different priorities. This would force right-wing judges to come up with what amounts to two different legal systems, one for policies they like and another for policies they don’t, eating away at the increasingly unpopular system of judicial supremacy.

The Eighth Circuit’s ruling is not the only adverse one for Biden’s student debt program, which would cancel up to $20,000 in loan balances for tens of millions of borrowers. A federal judge in Texas last week struck down the Biden plan on behalf of two students who didn’t qualify for full debt relief. The plaintiffs argued they had standing to sue because they were unable to provide comment expressing their disapproval of the program. Judge Mark Pittman agreed, even though the law the administration is using to enact debt relief explicitly says it can waive the notice and comment period. Pittman even acknowledged that later in the same ruling.

That inanity was only mirrored by the Eighth Circuit’s six-page, unsigned decision on Monday. In it, the three judges, appointed by Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump, reversed a lower court, which had said that none of the six states that sued Biden and the Department of Education over the debt cancellation plan had jurisdiction to sue. The judges singled out one entity, a student loan servicer named the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA).

MOHELA, which is called a “state instrumentality,” services loans for the federal government. The state uses MOHELA revenue to fund capital projects at state colleges, as well as a modicum of financial aid (less than $6 million per year). If federal loan balances are reduced through forgiveness, MOHELA will service fewer loans, and there will be less money to go to capital funding and scholarships, the plaintiffs in the case have argued. “Due to MOHELA’s financial obligations to the State treasury, the challenged student loan debt cancellation presents a threatened financial harm to the State of Missouri,” the judges wrote.

But in this case, MOHELA itself, in a letter responding to questions from Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), explicitly said that its executives “were not involved with the decision” to file for a preliminary injunction this September. MOHELA added that it has no relationship with the Missouri Attorney General’s office, which filed the suit, and that the documents the attorney general presented proving MOHELA’s potential financial harm from student debt cancellation had to be procured through formal sunshine law requests. Those have been the only communications between MOHELA and the AG’s office.

Asked whether MOHELA supports the lawsuit to block student debt relief, it answered: “MOHELA is faithfully fulfilling its obligations pursuant to its federal loan servicing contract.” It is possible that MOHELA is being cagey about this because, under California law, it could be liable for hundreds of billions of dollars in penalties for blocking student loan relief.

The Justice Department filed a brief informing the Eighth Circuit of MOHELA’s letter to Rep. Bush, so the judges should have been aware of its existence. Nevertheless, they ruled for MOHELA, the unwilling plaintiff. And under those terms, they instituted the injunction. None of the merits of the case were discussed at all, with the judges merely saying that they are “substantial.”

These peculiar decisions have thrown the Biden administration’s plans into doubt. It has stopped collecting applications for debt relief, after 26 million applied. Debtor advocates have proposed several options going forward.

One argument all along has been that the administration’s legal complications are tied up with the program’s contours. Means-testing the relief required an application process and slowed things down enough for opponents to fund lawsuits and find courts willing to overturn the program. Plus, the administration used the HEROES Act of 2003 as its authority for debt forgiveness, a limited program that, it’s reasonable to suggest, was not intended for this type of mass relief.

Compromise and settlement authority from the Higher Education Act, under this theory, is a much more robust option, allowing for cancellation of debt by fiat. Astra Taylor, one of the leaders of the activist group Debt Collective, argued in The Guardian Monday that “Biden could knock the legs out from under these cynical lawsuits tomorrow by extinguishing all federal student loans immediately and permanently using compromise and settlement authority.”

A potential complication to this is that the Education Department in 2016 amended implementing regulations for compromise and settlement that Justice Department lawyers have argued narrow its potential use. The new rules, according to DOJ lawyers with the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), make it so that the authority could only be used if the cost of collecting debt exceeded what the agency could expect to collect. Other experts have looked at these regulations and said they do not prevent the Secretary Of Education from canceling debt, but the OLC hasn’t seen it the same way.

The regulations would take 18 months to change through administrative procedure. Of course, it took Biden more than 18 months to decide what course of action to take on student debt cancellation. The administration could have provided regulatory clarity and cancelled debt en masse in less time than it took to come up with a new authority and a cumbersome application process.

This would have served the dual purpose of speeding up the whole process. Determining debt cancellation unconstitutional right before national elections, and taking relief away from 26 million borrowers, would have been another stark display of judicial control of government. On the off chance that it got past the judiciary, Biden would have given a tangible benefit to tens of millions of borrowers.

Because of the uncertainty of cancellation, several groups are arguing to extend the payment pause, which is due to expire at the end of the year. The pause has been in place for nearly three years without legal challenge. That would prevent financial stress in a time of high inflation and dwindling discretionary income.

But given the outlandish nature of the judicial rulings, another more operatic option looms down the road. If plaintiffs can make up any story to justify standing to block federal programs they disfavor, they surely will. Liberal activists have plenty of problems with endless wars, climate pollution, and dozens of other issues. It’s plausible that violations of congressional war powers or the right to clean air and water exist from these activities. Liberal plaintiffs never had a hook to bring cases before, but they could simply say they have standing to sue because they never got to comment on the federal actions, or because some related entity will be harmed if the plans go through.

These precedents from the student debt rulings are being set, and they amount to sticks of dynamite for would-be litigants. Liberals can forum-shop too, and move these cases through the system. If nothing else, it would force the conservative higher courts to spend lots of time fending off cases. It would likely yield rulings where the courts would say that notice-and-comment standing claims are fine for conservative activists but not for liberal ones.

The judiciary’s legitimacy is already at a low ebb; making up different sets of rules depending on the plaintiff would nosedive that even further. This legitimacy, while it seemingly doesn’t matter to unelected elites in robes, clearly had an impact on the 2022 elections. And in U.S. history, when the judiciary has been seen as a cancer on American life, it has often changed course, like the Lochner Court during the New Deal.

Whatever the strategy, the Biden administration will need to rebut charges that they conned young voters by offering debt relief before the election, only to have it taken away by the courts, as they knew it would be. They have at least a few ways to prove that conspiratorial belief wrong.

nano week one wrapup time! (*´꒳`*) frankly a slightly harrowing start, just in terms of spending 3-4 solid days doing nothing but moving the two parts of the intro chapter back and forth and back and forth and also completely overhauling the basic concepts of the meetcute and actual plot setup while I was at it. it’s still a pretty bad chapter (and I think a lot of the info in it is not even necessarily correct vis à vis current plot direction, idk that the description of naga’s actions in it makes sense so we might need another pass to take that out entirely… I was attached to him being the thing that motivates Hyou to take the job at all but since the rest of the setup has leaned into the whole situation being mere’s fault exclusively and naga doesn’t appear onscreen it might be better just to cut him entirely) and at some point I’ll probably go back to move the middle flashback section to the beginning again but At Least It’s Done Enough -_-b I was also hoping to make it to the first crime scene scene today and did not, but we at least got thru the last convo at the base and are on the way there, which is the last point we had to clear to be free of the absolutely minuscule ‘intro’ portion of the outline. large parts of the outline may still have to be rewritten if I keep feeling this iffy abt writing the stupid court martial scene though. bwaaa

THIRD PERSON POV

if anyone were to ask matt, when he fell in love with you, he'd tell you somewhere between junior and senior year. but deep down he knew that he was lying. he knows he fell in love with you the moment he met you.

the two of you met during the summer between eighth and ninth grade. it was the one and only summer he let his mom send him away to summer camp with his brothers. he decided that he'd go once, just for the memories.

and boy did he make some memories.

FLASHBACK

"matt c'mon! they're letting us have a free hour on the beach!" chris exclaimed loudly as he jumped on his brother's bed, disturbing the middle triplet who tried to peacefully nap during their free hour.

"chris go away!" matt grumbled, pulling the pillow over his head, keeping away from chris until nick came into the room, ordering matt to get up. matt obliged, but not without complaint.

the three boys made their way down to the beach. chris immediately took off toward the makeshift court where a few boys his age were playing basketball. nick took off toward alahna who attended the camp as well.

matt was about to follow nick when he spotted a girl, probably his age sitting alone at table drawing away in a sketchbook.

"hey, why are you by yourself?" matt greeted, sitting across from her, feeling the need to keep this girl company.

"i just moved to boston and my mom sent me to this stupid camp to make friends in time for school but i'm mad at her so i'm not gonna make any friends." the girl replied, not taking her eyes off her book as her pencil scribbled furiously. when she realized he wasn't leaving, she let out a dramatic sigh and looked out at the water.

"well, i'm matt!" he laughed, noticing how stubborn she was about not looking at him.

"i'm y/n." she replied, finally looking at him and felt her face grow warm, but she thought that was gross so she chalked it up to the summer air against her skin.

a week later, the girl left summer camp with four new friends, despite her penchant for being alone.

when the school year began, y/n quickly found that she was attending the same high school as the triplets. she was quick to fall into their routine, developing a close relationship with their closest friends as well. almost immediately fitting into their dynamic and group.

however, y/n got rather close with nathan almost immediately after meeting him. she opened her arms and let nate in without fighting, she felt a strong brotherly tie to him.

however matt didn't know that she only considered him a brother, his jealously stewing over time. he knew he was falling in love when he wanted to punch nate for stealing y/n from him. he knew he was falling in love when he was angry when he should've been happy when y/n found her first boyfriend.

he knew he was falling in love the moment he met her.

FLASHBACK OVER

in the two years since y/n, the triplets, alahna, and nate have graduated, matt hasn't been able to pinpoint the exact moment his relationship with y/n changed.

they went from awkward teenagers trying to navigate uncomfortable and unfamiliar feelings that brew in the pits of their stomachs every time they met their best friend's eyes, to people testing the waters of what is considered a normal friendship while cuddling, spending the night with her chest to his back and his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.

they went from best friends teasing each other relentlessly over not having their first kisses only to become each other's first kisses. they kept the terribly awkward, clashing of teeth, tongue in the wrong spots type of kiss, to themselves.

however, despite their first kiss being terrible, once they graduated and the triplets moved to los angeles, y/n and matt had a tendency to share more kisses every time they convinced her to come out to los angeles or whenever the triplets flew back home to boston.

matt depended on those close, personal moments of intimacy with y/n. they made him feel like he had her in his life in a way that no one did. she was special to him, his first ever love. he didn't want to give that up. and so, he and his brothers were on their way to boston, partly because they missed home and mostly because matt needed to see her.

"so are you gonna tell her?" nick hummed, looking at matt who sat in the middle seat of their section on the plane, his eyes glued to his phone as he watched the minutes tick by, his right knee bouncing rapidly as he waited for the plane to land.

"huh? tell who? what?" matt replied, a delayed reaction to nick's question, the pounding in his chest travelled to his head, causing his reaction time to be slowed.

"he asked if you're gonna tell y/n that you've been in love with her for like ever, bozo." chris snickered, earning a swift smack to the stomach, causing chris to double over groaning slightly. okay so maybe, matt's reaction time wasn't delayed.

"shut up chris. i'm not in love with her."

"that's bullshit, and you know it." nick mumbled, earning a glare from matt who just slumped back in his seat, plugging his airpods into his ears, trying to ignore his brothers and their ridiculous teasing for the rest of the flight. the flight couldn't go by fast enough for matt, who was subconsciously biting his nails as he listened to playlist that y/n had made for him. as the boys struggled to but kept busy, the flight was soon over, all three of them rushing to grab their carry/ons and get off the plane.

as the triplets headed toward their house, they grew nervous. all their friends and family knew they were coming home and were awaiting their arrival. matt felt his nerves calm slightly when he heard y/n's laugh from the open window in the kitchen.

as he pushed through the door, he felt his heart crumble to pieces deep in his chest. seeing y/n, thrown over nate's shoulder laughing loudly as he tickled her, bright matching smiles on their faces, made his words and feelings get stuck in his throat as it ran dry.

matt scoffed slightly and rolled his eyes as y/n looked up from her place over nate's, smiling brightly and squealing slightly as nate placed her on her feet. matt ignored the bitter jealously rising up his throat as she wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing his cheek briefly.

"i missed you." y/n whispered as she pulled back slightly, the look on her face sending a stubborn, unwavering warmth through matt's chest that he tried to fight hard to fight.

"yeah, you too." matt hummed, hardly looking at her as he stared nathan down, a half-assed grin on his face while he dapped his childhood friend up. as y/n hugged nick and chris, she felt eyes staring into the back of her head. turning around, she met matt's angry stare along with nathan's blissfully unaware, cheesy and lopsided grin.

"can we go to denny's? i could so fuck up some of their waffles right now." y/n laughed, looking to matt, her eyes softening as she silently pleaded for the boy in front of her to drive the group to denny's.

"yeah lemme put my shit away and we can go." matt sighed, the hardened front he masked himself with easily cracking and crumbling down completely around his feet under the soft stare that had him weak in the knees every time he looked her way.

as he quickly shuffled his suitcase and duffel bag up the stairs to his room, he felt his mind swarm with conflicting emotions and ideas, unsure if he wanted to punch his best friend for carelessly flirting with y/n as if his feelings weren't painfully obvious or if he just wanted to settle in security, knowing that he had y/n in a way no one else did.

sighing, he returned back to the group of people waiting for him, knowing if he stayed in his room, someone would come looking for him and he didn't have the nerve to talk about the feelings swirling beneath his ribcage.

the group piled into the van, chris, nick, and matt all in their respective spots, with nate and y/n squished beside each other, giggling amongst themselves as they talked about god knows what.

"so y/n, did you finally ask out that guy you said you were into?" nick prodded, tilting his head inquisitively as he eyed the way her and nate interacted.

"wait, did you think that guy was nate?" y/n laughed loudly, not missing the things nick said with a look.

"i mean, y'all act like a couple." nick chuckled as y/n rolled her eyes.

"yeah you do, it's fucking annoying." matt whispered to no one in particular as his eyes flicked to y/n in the backseat, however chris caught his comment and quietly giggled to himself. the rest of the drive to denny's consisted of the three in the back bickering over shit while chris watched matt stew in his jealousy from beside him, smirking to himself.

as the group piled into the restaurant, they all ordered their preferred forms of breakfast despite it being nearly two in the morning. the group giggled amongst themselves, save for matt who couldn't stop glaring at nate. y/n had picked up on and it made her feel unsettled, she couldn't pinpoint why he'd be upset.

as everyone finished paying for their food, y/n pulled matt aside, her hand on his arm as she looked up at him.

"what's goin' on up there?" she asked, her voice soft and calm, hoping it'd ease matt into talking, and help her get a sense of understanding what he was feeling.

"it's nothing, y/n." he muttered, his voice cold and slightly unsteady as he pushed her hand off his arm.

"matt, c'mon i know you better than you think i do, tell me what's bothering you. you've been acting weird since you first walked in the door. nate's noticed it and so have i."

"why don't you just go bother nate about it then? you seem to be much closer with him anyway." he snapped, rolling his eyes are the shock that fell on her face, before feeling his heart sink as her eyes held something that resembled hurt.

"that's what this is about?"

"y/n, drop it please."

"no matt, i thought it was clear that i don't see anyone else the way i see you."

"well with the way you've been acting with nate it makes me wonder what we actually are. i'm normally not the type to get jealous but jesus christ, i can't help it. you're an amazing girl, any guy would be lucky to have you as their girlfriend or whatever we are and i sometimes wonder why you're into me." matt whispered, unable to keep his feelings at bay any longer with the way she was looking at him, her head tilted, nothing but love and concern in her eyes. she made him feel safe, like he could tell her his deepest emotions and she would listen intently, providing safety for him.

"matt,-" she whispered, stepping closer to him and cupping both sides of his face, her thumbs dragging along his cheekbones as he leaned into her touch, his eyes falling shut briefly.

"there is absolutely no need to worry at all, i'm yours, okay? i-" she paused, taking a deep breath before continuing,

"i love you, matt. i've never looked at another guy the way i've looked at you. not once, and frankly i don't want to. there's no one that can understand a simple look from me the way you do. there's no one who knows me better than you, no one else who's ever taken the time to understand me and be patient with me the way you have. i am yours, and i hope that you're mine. okay?"

"okay." he whispered back, nodding softly as she leaned up, pressing her lips to his in a gentle but passionate kiss that meant they had a mutual agreement, that they were each others, and that one kiss, that one simple kiss that meant they understood each other, was more than enough for matt.

the two broke apart at the sound of giggles, turning to find the rest of the group standing behind them.

"what the fuck was that?" chris exclaimed, genuinely shocked that his brother and his best friend were kissing, and seemingly together.

"a kiss, dumbass."

"yeah but is this the first time or?"

"chris you idiot, do you not ever read between the lines? it's obvious they've been together for a while now." nick replied, his tone incredibly dull, like matt and y/n being together was the most obvious thing.

"i love you too, y/n." matt whispered as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his side, and pressing a kiss the side of her head as they walked toward the van.

falling in love with your best friend is never easy, it's complicated and messy and leaves behind a lot of doubt but y/n was worth every bit of complicated, every bit of mess left behind, y/n was worth it all to matt.

and that alone, was enough to put his worries and self doubt at ease. because as long as y/n was there to reassure him that she was his, he knew they'd be okay.

Synopsis - Clarisse underestimates you because of how feminine you are.

Most people assumed you just enjoyed makeup and nails and other shit like that. Which you did of course, you always made it a point to have your hair styled, your makeup done, your nails with a fresh coat of paint, and your lip combo was always on top.

Though there was something you liked more than makeup and all that. It was basketball.

Basketball was something you grew up with. Your parent helped introduce you to the sport and from there you only grew more fascinated with it. Joining your schools team every year and constantly going to games.

It had been your dream to go to college for basketball to!. At camp though you hadn’t really played. For some reason you never felt the draw to it which was in usual for you.

One night you couldn’t sleep. It was later but some kids were still up goofing off, mostly older campers. Throwing on a pink cropped hoodie that matched your juicy couture track suit.

Walking past the bonfire and the stoners you eventually made it to the court. Your Special place. When everything felt confusing and down basketball always brought you back.

Playing currently were some ares kids. One that caught your attention was clarisse. You both had been flirting back and forth for a while now, nothing to serious but serious enough that neither of you tried anything with anyone else.

Stepping onto the concrete slab you waited and watched as clarisse got her final shot for the game. As she made it with easy she turned around hearing your clapping.

Quickly she walked over, not wanting to seem rude. “Hey beautiful” she smiled leaning onto the sponge pad.

“Hi” you giggled.

“Come to watch me play?” She lightly flirted, every chance y’all got it was spent with light jabs at one another.

You shook your head “nah I’m here to play”

She just laughed not taking you serious. “Yeah? And how are you gonna play with your acrylics”

Clarisses Brother passed the ball over giving you the chance to steal it from her. “I guess we’ll see”

Your wide and cocky smile was the last thing clarisse saw before you practically dog walked her. Not giving her a chance to take the ball from you, making multiple shots from anywhere on the court and even when she had the ball you some how managed to take it back.

After the eighth score you looked back to see the once proud girl panting and embarrassed.

You walked over and smiled up at her. “What was That about me not being able to play?”

“Shut up” she scoffed with a mixture of annoyance and being flustered. That just made your smile become wider. “Someone’s mad”

“Am not” she quickly denied trying to act as though the entire one on one didn’t happen. You just rolled your eyes, planting a kiss on her cheek you shoved the ball back into her body.

“I’ll see you around La rue” her stunned face made you giggle while walking away, it was late enough.

not only had you and lando gone on your first date, you had gone on about nine in the past month. ever since his impromptu nap with you and his stricken realization of love - lando had figured that soaking up every bit of time with you possible was the only way he could survive. okay, maybe that's dramatized, however he did feel a desperate need to be with you. he had pushed plans with max, rescheduled streams, and even swayed the option of flying out a bit late to his next race just to soak up as much time with you as possible, and you had felt the same. now that your work had begun to achieve a normal pace, as well as you finally gaining your bearings in the new city, your schedule had been much more accommodating to the newfound romance.

what an odd way to describe your unconventional relationship. your first date, as per your request, was a paintball arena. your second date had been accompanying lando to a friends house along with the rest of his group - yes his friends believed you to be ‘out of his league’ and ‘norizz final boss’ which ultimately meant they loved you. your third date was a double with your friend and her boyfriend, which seemed as though the boyfriend had a bigger lovebug for lando than you did, leading to slight jealousy and lando’s reassurance as you both conveyed you wanted to be serious. you were now officially boyfriend and girlfriend. your fourth was a double with max and p which gained you yet another friend in the new city. your fifth was a nerf war begun by lando the minute you dropped by his apartment in an attempt to go to a cafe - you never made it there, too busy hiding behind your makeshift trench lying in wait for the curly haired boy you so adored to pass by in order to be shot by your styrofoam ammo.

your sixth date was a fresh market trip in the heart of the city as you grabbed your essentials with lando being your bag boy. your seventh was lando arriving at your apartment to see you so caught up in work your forgot about the romantic evening ahead, leading to him to watching tv and rubbing your feet as you finished up your work assignment. your eighth date was another nap after you had picked lando up from the airport and led him inside with his bags. a slight nod of his head to the bedroom had you inferring another thing, making you giddy, yet once inside, he plopped onto the mattress, gave you a sleepy smile and opened his arms wider to accommodate you. your ninth you didn’t get to leave the bed for different reasons, hushed tones, sweaty bodies rocking back and forth, moans soaking the walls of your bedroom, and pleasure coursing so hard through your body you could hear your heartbeat.

your tenth date was soon arriving and in your eyes, it was coming with impending doom. you were going with lando to a race. australia to be exact. and you were shitting bricks.

“y/n, love?” lando calls out as he appears from his gaming room, the one in which you so kindly nicknamed his cave. dark, lonely, and a bit cold. lando had reassured you that you would brighten up the room and make it into a lovely warm, comforting room if you were to join him, however, you had trouble with the publicity of dating him. lando had reiterated multiple times that the ball will forever be in your court. publicity will always be your decision and whenever you are ready. the world so far knew lando had a girlfriend, but no one knew of your actual identity. which is what you truly preferred, you didn’t want to be subject to criticism which you possibly couldn’t handle leading you to lose who you believed to be the love of your life. which goes back to you shitting bricks.

“in here!” you call back from lando’s kitchen. you were propped up on a stool, laptop open on the counter, page fresh on flight schedules.

“baby, you know i would fly you out private,” lando chuckles into your ear as he proceeds to wrap you up into his embrace from behind.

“this isn’t for australia, lan, it's to go home” your voice betraying you as it quivers a hint.

“it’s for the same dates as australia? is there something you’re not telling me?” he asks as he extends back to his full height and reaches a hand down to cup your chin, leading your face and gaze to peer up at him. it’s only then does he realize the gloss that has covered your y/e/c colored eyes he loves so much.

“love, what’s going on?” you shut your eyes quickly, not allowing the tears to escape and then open them once more to see lando’s brows adorably furrowed.

“i don’t know if i can do this, lan,” you speak so slowly and softly, lando would’ve missed it if he hadn’t been so concerned.

“do what? us? baby, please, i promise whatever i’ve done to make you feel that way i’ll fix it, i will i prom-” you cut him off with a light kiss on his lips and he chased your lips with his own as you attempted to pull back.

“lan, the public,” you point over to your screen and he begins to peer over your head, noticing you switched tabs onto twitter. more specifically his fanbase side of twitter. even more specifically the side that couldn’t stand the fact that lando was dating someone that wasn’t them. all the tweets were along the lines of ‘how come we’ve never seen lando’s new girlfriend? he’s probably embarrassed by her’ or ‘i already don’t like lando’s new gf, bring back luisha’ and so many more. lando’s eyes filled with anger and disgust as he kept reading but you just spoke up again, “if they already don’t like me and they don’t know me, how do you think they’ll feel when they do? when they find out i'm not some model? i’m not a rich nepo baby o-or have a business or know anything about motorsports other tha-” this time it was your boyfriend's turn to cut off your anxious ramble with a kiss.

“if you’re not comfortable with going then you don’t have to. i’ve told you from day one that this will all be on your own terms. and those people? the ones who say things like that? they aren’t my fans. i do not claim them,” the last statement comes out in triumph in order to make you giggle, which succeeded as he continues while cradling your face in his hands, “y/n, i love you, i love us, i can’t imagine my life for a second without you. one day the fame, the races, the cars all of this will go away. but i do want one thing for forever, and that’s you. so whatever you decide, i am right behind you. i promise,” he ends his loving speech with a soft kiss to your forehead, while your mouth hangs open in shock.

“yo-you l-love me?” not only was this his first time saying it, but it was both of your first times truly feeling it. your dates had lacked a certain romance but you both knew that you felt deeply, that it was love, and yet right here in this moment with a soft reassurance, plain domesticity, and a speech out of a rom-com, you both truly felt it. you loved him, and he loved you.

“i do, y/n. i think i have for a while, i just felt it was too soon, couldn’t scare ya off, love,” he replies with a sweet smile and a chuckle.

“i love you too, lando. thank you,” after your response, his lips crashed quickly to yours and you both fell into a fit of giggles and messy kisses. he picked you up off the stool and ran you over to the sofa, plopping you down with more laughs and love.

after the tv had been put on, dinner finished and left on the coffee table for your future selves to handle, you and lando were cuddled on the same sofa with you safely tucked under his left arm. you repositioned your head to admire your boyfriend, his eyes were trained on the tv in front of him, eyebrows lightly pinched as the suspension in the show had him in a grasp and his bottom lip gently tucked under his teeth. you came to the realization after your proclamations of love that all would be okay. being lando norris’ girlfriend wasn’t your title. you were a sister, a daughter, a friend, and so much more. and the people you cared about most knew you, therefore making the internet's opinion moot.

“i’ll go” you whisper up at lando. he’s pulled out of his daze and glances down at you, “what, love?” he asks, now fully turning his focus onto you.

“i’ll go. to australia. i’ll go with you,” you repeat with more detail.

“are you sure, y/n?”

“yes, lan. as long as i’m with you i don’t care what the internet has to say,”

“it’s not the internet i felt you’d be most worried about, to be honest,”

“who should i be worried about?”

“my whole family’s going, y/n/n. what? i didn’t tell you?” he bit back with a smile.

“i am gonna kill you, norris,”

as it would have it and as lando predicted, his mother did adore you. along with another new friend, his lovely niece. and his dad. and the internet had a field day, captivated by your charm and in awe of your boyfriend’s heart eyes anytime he was remotely facing your direction.

Locked Tomb Timeline, as far as I can tell

This is a long one, and a bit of a mess. I'll be making other posts about the fun date coincidences and my speculations about their implications, but I figured I should give some of the actual evidence in one solid chonky post so I can link to it and don't need to repeat myself later on.

(BD = before death of the earth; AR = after resurrection; BM = before millennium, AM = after millennium)

Unspecified Pre-Death of the earth: Foundation of Canaan house/the facility that Jod et al used for the cryogenic experiments. Establishment of Kuiper installation, Uranus platform, Mars installation w/ room for 5 million, the Lucifer Telescope, and fusion batteries (Ntn 14, Ntn 74, Ntn 189)

Now! Some pre-resurrection numbers!

Before 2 BD: C-- sides with the crew (Ntn 13)

1 BD: Governments shift away from the cyrogenics plan (Ntn 13)

0 BD: Jod destroys the world

Now, the most unclear section of the timeline: the resurrection and its immediate aftermath.

Augustine, from Htn 176: “Alfred and I were there early enough to found the Koniortos Court on the Fifth, but Lyctors like Cyth wouldn’t be born for years and years, and she spent her whole life suffering Seventh House woo-woo theories regarding the value of hereditary cancer … whereas Mercy is the oldest lag except for me, and she was out hammering at the Eighth House before the paint was even dry on the Resurrection.”

The resurrection occurs a few weeks after the death of the earth (Ntn 396). Then things get a bit hazy. We know the approximate order of the resurrections of the original ten disciples, but not how far apart they were staggered - was it minutes? Months? Years?

Similarly, Cyrus/Val and Anastasia/Samael are implied to have showed up before Cytherea/Loveday, when Cytherea was almost 30 years old. Both cavaliers have last names associated with their house, which suggests that either the third and ninth were established enough to at least have a small population by the time that they went to Canaan House, or that they took those names/were given those names later on.

Cytherea-as-Dulcinea says that she "dreamed of being a 9th nun" at age 13, and it's unclear if she's speaking as herself or as Dulcinea or how much she was lying as either persona (Gtn 104). Thus, we don't know if the ninth house was established by the time she went to Canaan House, though it seems like the sort of hint that both Cytherea and Muir would have had a fun time dropping.

Thus, while it is possible/seems probably many/most of the houses were established by the time that any of the newer disciples showed up, especially Cytherea, that is unconfirmed. However, it took until at least 30 years after the resurrection, probably more, for all 16 of the disciples to gather.

A rough order of events during this time, some of which may overlap:

Original disciples resurrected

New disciples arrive

Lyctors ascend; Anastasia fails

Alecto is put in the tomb and Cassiopeia dies

The lyctors and Jod flee to the Mithraeum, leaving the system

Particular questions that remain and would help clarify things:

Were Anastasia, Samael, Cyrus, Valancy, and Loveday born or resurrected? It seems like Cytherea was likely born.

When did Anastasia have a child and found the tombkeeper line?

When did Pyrrha (or G1deon!Pyrrha) paint a nursury? Was it the same time she visited Anastasia "before she got settled" (Ntn 85)? Was Anastasia's child the birth she assisted at (Ntn 121)?

When was the ninth founded? When was the prison installation founded? Was there anything on the ninth before Anastasia was told to prepare for Alecto's imprisonment? Samael seems to have been born or resurrected after the ninth was founded, unless he was given his name later?

After resurrection: Actual Numbers. Once we get like 100-200 years out from the resurrection, things start to get clearer. Not clear, but clearer.

100 AR: God names himself Gaius (Htn 521). Is this when Cytherea ascends, since she is given credit for the "naming oneself after one's cavalier" thing? Or was that some God bullshit?

200 AR: Alecto put in tomb (Htn 478)

4000 AR: source gram comes from sixth house to BOE (Htn 529)

5000 AR: BOE comes to the attention of jod and the lyctors; they may have existed beforehand but been unable to find the houses/be found (Htn 154). Augustine begins questioning the purpose of the empire (Htn 483).

Moving into the thousand years before the events of the series:

9000 AR/ 1000 BM: Matthias Nonius lives (Gtn 53)

750-700 BM: New Rho contract drawn up (Ntn 206)

519ish BM: beginning planning of dios apate major (Htn 474)

300 BM: Cyth gets angry (Gtn 402). Last contact between second and first houses (Gtn 456).

100 BM: Jod leaves the Mithraeum (Htn 81).

80 BM: Jod joins the Erebos (Htn 81)

40-39 BM: G1deon starts to really annoy Augustine, who speaking in 1 AM states: “He has caused me more pain over these last scant forty years than I dare to admit" (Htn 268). I think Wake makes the most sense as an explanation for this, though it's off by about five years.

34 BM: Wake reinvigorates BOE (Htn 154). Ortus born? That’s a fun coincidence that means nothing.

30 BM: Mercy thinks Jod should have returned to the Mithraeum then (Htn 81).

25-24 BM: BOE finds out about resurrection beasts (Htn 275) because Wake talks to G1deon (Ntn 155)

21 BM: G1 begins his (final) pursuit of wake (Htn 469)

Sometime after 300 BM, most likely 20 BM, Cytherea teaches BOE about steles and obelisks (Ntn 155)

20 BM approximately, presumably, could be earlier: Augustine and Mercy talk to BOE. BOE gets accurate fleet schematics for the first time in a hundred years and eventually the location of the mithraeum, though those were probably earlier with Cytherea and two decades later with Cytherea!Wake respectively (Ntn 155)

19 BM: Isaac’s dad killed by terrorists on [redacted], presumably BOE (Gtn 459). Mercy and Augustine are “talking” (Htn 87); Dios apate major. Mercy sees Cytherea for the last time and Cytherea laughs so much she insults Mercy (Htn 120), which is an understandable response given that Mercy may have described the dios apate major plan and/or requested her involvement. Mercy sees Sarpedon as a young soldier (about 20 years PM; close enough and matches up with dios apate) (Htn 81).

19–18 BM: Wake dies (Htn 88). Gideon born. Creche massacre.

17 BM: Harrow born.

14 BM Gideon’s first escape attempt (Gtn 24)

13 BM: Gideon is not a necromancer confirmed (Gtn 24)

10 BM: Augustine sees Cytherea for the last time (Htn 120). Wake’s bones get put on rotation (Htn 476).

9-8 BM: Harrow is suicidal. Harrow opens the tomb. Harrow hears/sees the body. Onset of psychosis. Unclear in what order (Htn 49, 247).

7 BM: (Harrow is still suicidal but sees the body?). Harrow and Gideon fight (Htn 477). Gideon sees Harrow opening the tomb. Her parents kill themselves. Gideon gets nightmares about being in the tomb (Gtn 202).

5 BM: Harrow starts puppeting (?girl wtf?? What was going on in the intervening two years???) (Gtn 348). Last ninth house chaplains and adepts are lost in action (Htn 81).

2 BM: Gideon enters Drearburgh for the last time

1 BM: Number 7 estimated five years from the Mithraeum (Htn 125).

0 BM, with rough approximates:

Month 1-3: prepping for Canaan house

Month 4: Canaan house

Month 5: harrow throws up; Camilla nonverbal

Canaan house recovery missions from the emperor and BOE — what the fuck. Who got there first. How and why did they miss the other people. Seems like BOE got there, intentionally left H and I but took G’s body??????????

Month 6: Harrow and Ianthe arrive on the Mithraeum

Month 8: Harrow kills her 13th planet with Mercy. It’s desert and triple-sunned. Wake makes posthumous contact with BOE (Ntn 155).

Month 9-10: When Judith says she begins writing her report; she’s with BOE on a wooded double(potentially triple?)-sunned planet. At one point several weeks (or months?) later Mercy shows up. According to Judith, that is. Judith honey I might need to recuse your testimony for somehow being more of an unreliable narrator than the lobotomized traumatized psychotic unmedicated half-dead triple-haunted 201-souled Harrowhark Nonagesimus. Then I could bump this back to month 8 which would make more sense.

Month 10: Harrow catches G1d!Pyrrah with Cytherea!Wake

Between Month 10 and Month 12: Harrow turns 18. Harrow discovers G1d can drain thanergy. Harrow makes soup. Harrow makes Ianthe’s arm. Dios apate minor.

Month 12: Harrow finds Cam and Pal on a wooded planet and sees Judith. Judith tries to warn Harrow about Mercy’s involvement.

Mercy ditches her for unspecified business. I suspect this is when she meets with We Suffer? Was this when she heals Judith?

1 AM

Month 2: death of the emperor. Quick undeath of the emperor. Nona born(?)

Month 5: Station Red-As-Blood abandoned (Ntn 152). The demons show up on Antioch (Ntn 448).

Month (6?): Nona gets a job (Ntn 41).

Month 7: nona gets shot, cam/pal fusion reveal (Ntn 105 through the end of the chapter)

Month 8: events of Ntn
