It's a fictionalized story based in real history about the life of a court maid who falls in love with a king and unwillingly gets pushed into becoming his concubine. The drama refuses to give in to romantic notions about loving a monarch and forces you to sit in the tension between her romantic feelings for him and her wish to live her life as a free citizen, and that tension is never broken all the way through the tragic ending. It's excruciatingly well done, excruciating being the operative word.
