a little drabble for @fullmetalnet’s third LGBT+ event and @edling-week (fits the prompt “hands”)!

The most free Ed ever felt was when he was dead to the world—but not to the boy holding his hand.

Moonlight shined on Ling’s hair, highlighting every strand of his ponytail.

Ed didn’t dare move from his uncomfortable seat on the grass. The prince had fallen asleep several minutes ago, on his shoulder.

If Ed moved and caused Ling to pull his hand away, Ed would have lost the greatest treasure he’d ever known.

He’d give up so much more than comfort if it meant he could hold Ling’s hand forever. Ling—not Greed or the iffy state when they coexisted.

Maybe it didn’t matter if the world ended. Ed had gotten to hold Ling’s hand. What more did he need to achieve for a full life?

If Ed died in this moment...well, nothing would have been more worth it.

It was years until Ed got his wish. He held Ling’s, and only Ling’s, hand atop the plush royal sofa.

Starlight shined through the curtains, highlighting every pore that made up Ling’s beautiful skin.

There were no words as they admired each other. Soaked in each other. The years had dulled Ling’s smile but not his eyes. They were beautiful cassiterite as they pierced the weariness of Ed’s travel.

He was fresh under Ling’s gaze.

He was so glad he hadn’t died in that moment all those years ago. For all the pain, this was worth it.

Summary:

Ed couldn't say anything beyond the lump in his throat and the press of heat in the back of his eyes. He couldn't do this. He couldn't do this without Ling.

Edling week day 1: Distance

Ed comes to with blood all around him. He inhales sharply and chokes on the rich, metallic smell. His eyes flutter open, and they take a moment to focus. The blurriness soon cleared, and he discovered he was lying in the viscous liquid. His stomach rolled, and he fought down his stomach's urge to relieve itself.

Don't think about the smell. It'll only make it worse.

He pushed himself into a sitting position, eyes slamming shut as the world tilted on his axis. The urge to vomit grew overwhelming, and he finally leaned over and retched. He panted and wiped the back of his mouth. He held his head in his hand, willing for the pounding ache behind his eyes to disappear...(Read rest on AO3)

I know Edlingweek was like two weeks ago, but I'm stubborn to not finish some prompts. For day 3, I chose pinning and nature because boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooi all of my friends know I am a sap for some gays in the woods.

The text is from Lorde's "400 Lux". It's such a pining song, and I love that there have been stories about Ed being compared to sunsets. I wanted to take elements of both and make a thing.
