So here is what just happened…yesterday I have done the last subject of the curriculum which means that I am free to defend my thesis in about a month from now and officially become an economist. This is so crazy and unbelievable… I didn’t even have the chance to really appreciate it or be happy about it because I am just sooo exhausted. But thinking about how the last almost 3 years came down to this moment; all the hard work, anxiety, so many hard and dark moments and some beautiful ones of course… it’s just so incredible that it’s finally over. Well, almost.. fingers crossed for my last “exam” in late June/early July 🤞

page 562 - Do you ever feel overwhelmed scrolling through all the pictures you took, that you transferred from one phone to the next, backed up on a laptop or locked up in the cloud? Memories that could have been left to fallow, instead rise up zombie-like into your emotional present on a random Tuesday night when you scroll back too far?
There is so much and you don't need most of it. Most memory is meant to disappear after all; maybe only rising up when the light and the smell of an evening combine just so, or a photo falls out of an old notebook. Save the very few -- privileged or damned -- we all have corners and rooms that stay dark. You are meant to forget. It is not natural to scroll and be reminded of every 20 minutes from the last 15 years.
And so you feel feel sick from remembering. And you feel sick because you can't remember, because the remembering you just subjected yourself to isn't really remembering. It's forced and unnatural; a decisive moment abstracted from the life that surrounded it. There was smell and touch and emotion present when the photo was taken. Gone, killed by the visual. Another memory tried to surface, spurred by the photo in front of you. Gone, recall smashed apart by distraction. Only the remorseless engine remains, the piston of the scroll as a new picture is stamped over the old and again and again and anything gnawing at the edge of consciousness never has a chance. You're left with the feeling that you've lost something before it was even in your grasp. That you had finally remembered the combination to the safe where your most precious treasures are stored but the door was slammed, the dial spun and the numbers changed again.

Quote
Some wonder whether Mr Modi might have crossed a line by going after the august BBC, especially in a year when India will be in the spotlight as host of the G20. They underestimate how important fighting shadowy enemies is to his political appeal. After the prime minister’s many victories against domestic critics, going alter foreign ones is the logical next step. The doubters also underestimate the limpness of Mr Modi’s western allies. America, Britain and the rest may express some small concerns, from time to time, about minority rights and press freedoms in India. But what matters to them is the vast economic potential of the Indian market, and the longing for an Indian bulwark in the West’s struggle for supremacy with China.

July 17th 1790 saw the Economist Adam Smith pass away in Edinburgh.
Adam Smith may be the most famous economist and economic theorist of all time. His theories have influenced the way economic markets all over the world have functioned for many, many years. His theories will continue to be studied by students of economics, perhaps for centuries to come.
Adam was an intelligent young man. In secondary school he studied writing, philosophy, mathematics, and Latin. At the age of fourteen Adam attended the University of Glasgow. At Glasgow, Adam studied philosophy and was taught by the famous philosopher Francis Hutcheson. After graduating, Adam attended Oxford University.
After leaving Oxford, Smith became a professor at the University of Edinburgh. It was at Edinburgh that he met the philosopher David Hume. Hume would become one of his best friends. Over the years, Smith and Hume would discuss economics and philosophy. During this time, Smith began to formulate the ideas that would make him famous.
In 1776, Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations. This book became the foundation of modern economics. It introduced and explained many economic concepts that are still used today. One of the things he explains in the book is that the wealth of a country isn’t in how much gold and silver it owns, but in the goods and services that the nation creates. This stream of goods and services is the “gross domestic product” (GDP) of a nation. Today, the GDP is widely used to determine the success of a nation’s economy.
Today, he is known as the father of modern economics. The Wealth of Nations is one of the most influential books in history. Most countries throughout the world today operate a mixed economy that combines the free market described by Adam Smith with some government intervention.
When I posted about Smith three years ago I had “ Scottish Chilean lesbian living in the U.S” commenting on the post about him and saying we should “tear his statue down”
Smith has also been called the Father of Capitalism, but don’t shoot the man down for this epitaph, capitalism, as with most theories over the centuries his view has been bastardised, you just need to look at communism to see how this can happen. Smith believed that the unexpected consequences of intended actions would always be to the benefit of society in general and not just for those at the top, so look into what Adam Smith advocated rather than the tag of father of modern capitalism. Indeed back in his day he was ridiculed and satirised by the Tories for his views. He talked of selfishness form the top down was needed for any enterprise to flourish, unfortunately not all his philosophies were adhered to, the capitalism we see nowadays is far removed from the one he wrote about, so before criticizing him and the Scots who honour him do your homework.
For a man as famous as Smith, a leading light in the Scottish Enlightenment it took us a long time to honour him with a statue, this was put right in 2008 when he took pride of place on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, just as you reach Parliament Square.

So, I graduated in July 👩🏻‍🎓 with excellent results and I’m officially an economist 😊 I also got accepted for my masters (in marketing) with a full scholarship starting this week. I’m proud and happy 😊 and also excited and curious about the next 2 years and whatever life will bring my way on this new journey.
I want to congratulate everyone who graduated recently! 🤍 only we can understand the amount of work and stress that comes with it and I am so proud of you all for not giving up! 🩷
I also want to use this post to encourage and motivate everyone in their studies to keep on working for their goals and not to give up on their dreams! The going can get tough but at the end it will be so worth it! Keep the faith! 🤍
I created this blog 3 years ago and I feel like I was a completely different person back then. As if it was a lifetime ago but at the same time I can remember it like it was yesterday. So much have changed since then. I have changed a lot since then. And some days this place was the only thing that kept me going.
Cheers 🥂 for the bittersweet feeling of graduating and the excitement of the beginning of something new! 💛

page 562 panel - But on a happy note at least I'm buried and crushed by my own photos and memories. I had a role to play in their creation. At least it's not a pile of text and images churned senselessly from the gaping maw of an AI machine. At least that. We aren't designed to sort the clutter we can produce and store for ourselves and we certainly aren't ready for a fire hose of nonsense imaginary. Even if its benign, and a lot of it won't be, at the very least we will be distracted by it, weakened, grumpy and confused. And that's a best outcome.
Also, this vacation was great.
