I love your otto brainrot. He's favorite person to gush about in this series. I also love your analysis about one of the latest chapters and regarding Otto! ust, chef's kiss.

Anyhow, I would also like to add a crack theory about why otto never talked about his dp allowing him to talk to infants too. In this moment, it very much be because, as you said, he wants Spica to be eliminated. But! We're thinking small here. My question morphs into a more general perspective; why would Otto, and tappei to an extent, keep such information about his dp under wraps for this long, way before these Spica shenanigans? And I feel like the author may want to expand on that regard. Because as far as the rest of the crew knows (and as far as I remember), they know he can only talk to animals. But that chapter states he can talk to any living being (?), which I think may hint to it being a bigger fucking deal than we may realize. Like outside the Louis development, as well as Otto's frustration development, this power in of itself can cause a ripple of what Otto's capabilities are, and to not underestimate it.

So, now I wonder, would tappei utilize this tidbit for more development about Otto's power? What do you think?

OK ALSO LIKE i love your crack theory to bits. i think like the idea of his capabilities being A Little More Massive than they already are hasnt really occurred to me if only bc 1. i have like one braincell at a time and 2. ottos unhinged anger and various ugly habits (ie: doing things behind his friends backs HAH) were smth i was distracted by (positive) bc its so fascinating and now Finally everyone reading rezero knows hes crazy For Sure and 3. i think like. idk ive always kind of thought that his power is like super crazy like once you think about it. like iirc theres the canonical fact that other people in the fantasy world whove had ottos dp have gone like insane from it, so hes Basically the outlier here. and also hes insane anyway but his dp absolutely has partly to do with it. not only bc it like affects so much of his life with the constant overstimulation he experienced for a big chunk of his childhood along with the other effects it had with how he was behind his peers for a while and it made him socially awkward and anxious - but also like.

animals Are insane. a lot. genuinely. and then you have a power that allows you to understand them and hear their voices all the time. (more under read more bc its Long.)

theres so many fucked up animal facts out there HAH so i suppose that could just take like a couple google searches (god.... if oceans were in the fantasy world otto might go a little insane with all those sea creatures if he ever came close...) but i always feel like ottos learned at least a bit of his ruthlessness from that. and hes Definitely seen and heard shit (dont forget stuff like livestock ahah T^TT or bug infestations or something aljsdfls or the fact that otto would probably be seeing animal friends eat other animal friends or before he even knew he had his dp he could be eating some cattle he had a convo with like twenty minutes ago and ALSO garf and fred have their meat pie recipe that they adore and its like. that meat came from an animal and otto has most likely seen them make their meat pie before). but like nature is nature. its not always. Nice. survival of the fittest and things just die sometimes (ottos made various animal friends throughout his life and Many animals have smaller lifespans than him as well + some, such as bugs, are more fragile than him) and animals take actions according to their Nature (even if its. Bad, by human moral standards.) and all that - so i think the double whammy of ottos dp and him taking on merchant ideals is very much partly why hes so insane fr HAH.

I WENT A LITTLE OFF TOPIC BUT no yeah i agree. and i just think his dp has always been such a huge factor in what makes him so dangerous - its not only helped mold him into who he is as a person (especially when you remember that the rest of his family are Normal People and he Very Much Is Not Normal) but also like you said. his dp makes him extremely dangerous especially with the new information that he understands babies. iirc otto didnt Necessarily keep that bit of info under wraps - at least not before he met the emilia camp, bc the text said something about how hed take on side jobs where he babysat infants and hed be good at it bc he can understand the intent behind their wordless "words". and i definitely think otto - and tappei - havent really said anything on his ability to talk to infants before this bc it just hasnt come up in much relevant context until now. BUT I ALSO THINK YOU HAVE A POINT bc this does open like. a bit of a can of worms. theres these 2019 tappei qnas where he talks a bit about otto understanding "intent" -

Q: Is Otto's Blessing of the Spirit of Words limited to sounds that the speaker understands? Can he translate something Subaru wrote down in Japanese, or something that someone reads out loud phonetically without understanding it's meaning?

A: He can't. It's a blessing that conveys the intent of the other person's words, so if you said something like "Honbaradaratodetta", it wouldn't mean anything. It's just that, if Subaru had been saying "Honbaradaratodetta" for years to mean "What's for dinner?", it would convey that.

Q: About the "Blessing of the Spirit of Words" that Otto has, in cases where the same word can contain different meanings, can he discern the difference? (The English word 'servant' and a servant from Fate, etc.)

A: It's not the letters, but the speaker's intent that he picks up, so he could tell the difference.

but no yeah like........ ottos dp is specifically about Animals and well. humans and demihumans ARE animals. so it makes sense that it carries into humans and demihumans a bit so the whole catching someones intent thing is super fascinating and i feel like he could Definitely utilize it for more of his schemes?? esp when you combine that with the usual ways he uses his dp with animals - his power is Perfect for spying on others and gathering info in general. from my understanding of his power though, animals have to agree to help him, but given he can communicate with them and hes. well hes a good talker and also a bit of a manipulative bitch (affectionate) so like getting animals to help him doesnt seem like too much of an issue usually for him. so no but yeah his power is like. Off the Charts. and now we got big confirmation in the main story that he can UNDERSTAND PEOPLES INTENT BEHIND THEIR WORDS....? no yeah i think tappei will at least utilize it for the louis-spica plot things (ie otto wants her dead so hes just not gonna say anything about how he knows her true intent isnt to actually hurt anyone).

but i feel like otto could possibly use it for plans... or accidentally catch tidbits of info he shouldnt. im not entirely sure how, but. well. roswaal still hasnt delivered on his promise to kill everyone if even one person subaru cares about dies and Now roswaal knows that 1. otto plans to continue opposing subaru and emilia and keep pulling strings and 2. subaru wants louis to stay alive because he cares about her. it seems like massive emilia camp inner conflict is bound to happen at some point hah... the current situation is a ticking time bomb T^T and thats ON TOP of otto still working on restoring the book of wisdom... it all makes me wonder if otto will overhear a convo he shouldnt and catch the true underlying intent to otherwise innocent dialogue. or something like that.... or if louis's intent fluctuates in some way which otto will be Very aware of. if that happens. or if someone else somehow figures out ottos hiding the fact that he knows louis is innocent via his dp alsdjflsjdf. or maybe roswaal hints at his genocide plan and otto figures out the intent???? everyone is at a stalemate atm fr and im fascinated to see what comes next.

though. ok given otto went insane hearing the white whale..... well you could just fling mabeasts at him and maybe he'll shut up lajsdlfj bc using his dp (especially when overusing it gives him nosebleeds and headaches and pain and etc etc) against him is a Viable strategy to stop him among many others but like. the problem with otto is that hes persistent and Will hold a grudge against you if you wrong him. like i really do feel like he will hunt you down if you do which is the big Thing with otto. T^T hes unpredictable!!! especially now with arc 8 where hes been dragged through all these dangerous situations he did not sign up for and he just wants him and his friends to be safe but said friends want to save a whole country and NOW a sin archbishop alsdjflsjd.

like i really feel that hes so tired of things happening throughout his life out of control (remember his bad luck T^T and the way his dp used to fuck him over in his childhood? yeah T^T) that hes been trying to exert more and more control over his camp. bc like. vincent asking the emilia camp for help was nudged into that direction by otto. ottos also stepped a bit out of line by being hostile to julius and anastasia bc. otto that shit was unncessary aljsdlfjd theyre your camps allies!!!! and now ottos letting his camp be sus of louis by keeping quiet about her true intent. like otto is straight up like. hes kind of possessive of his camp isnt he? bc hes so fixated on making things go the way he wants (not that he wanted to help vollachia, but he wanted to help subaru and emilia which is why he pushed things in that direction, and now he wants to kill louis). it all makes me wonder if he'll ever have to use his dp against his camp given hes. kind of already doing that by lying to them - though itd probably be difficult to use his dp more actively against them if only bc they all already know what his dp is. theres no element of surprise there, but i think with the right circumstances he could possibly use it to figure out Something at least. bc like while he Does feel guilty, there is next to nothing stopping him from doing more shit on top of the shit hes been doing so far in arc 8 HAH. his moral compass is just literally broken and pointing straight down to hell. that mixed with his stubbornness and intellect and anger is like. well anyone going against otto is pretty fucked.

like. what is stopping him from sending a little bug to spy on subaru at all times. probably the fact that subaru and co. have a high chance of maybe noticing it and noticing that ottos keeping. too close of an eye on them. which would stop otto and his new declared "i walk in darkness" goal but all of this keeps making me wonder what lines otto WONT cross. and how far hes willing to go to do what he thinks is necessary to save his camp. and also what the consequences of his decisions will be.

but also like............................................... ok time for a crack theory of my own are you ready. anyway. can you imagine if ottos dp extended into fucking mind reading or something............ HAH.

Lance/Fernando 38,…because they’re running out of time

There’s a certain feeling in airports, where time and space are obsolete. Everyone is running on a different internal clock, some are rushing, urging the minutes to slow down, other’s are stuck, wishing the clock would tick faster.

Lance doesn’t know if he’s the former or latter.

He’s finally allowed to walk on his broken toe, with assistance of course, and his first order is to fly straight back home and start physio. It’s been a rough few weeks, but at least falling off his bike in Spain meant that Fernando could be by his side immediately.

In fact, he never left, clearing his schedule and cancelling all obligations to tend to Lance’s every need. They haven’t been dating for that long, so it’s a tall order, but Fernando has never been one to back down from a challenge.

Even today, he drove them, carried the younger’s bags, and insisted on pushing Lance in a wheelchair despite having a doctors note and whining that “it’s embarrassinggg”.

Of course the older never took no for an answer, only allowing the younger to stand once they’ve reached security. Where they have to part ways.

They stand facing each other as the minutes go by. Lance will have to go eventually but Fernando doesn’t relent the firm grip he has on his waist and lower back, afraid that without his support, Lance will come tumbling down.

Airports are generally more chaotic than not, sounds of luggage wheels rolling on smooth surface, constant announcements with updates, a myriad of languages being spoken.

Yet at that moment, it is as if they are the two people in existence, everything else around them a motionless blur.

Before, Lance had thought that this was just a game to Fernando, that he was just another pawn that had fallen for the king’s trap. It’s unrealistic, age gap aside, Lance has nothing to offer the older man, not even a functional wrist now.

But still.

He had stayed.

What was desperate kisses stolen in club alleyways, before relocating to spend the rest of the night in a penthouse, turned into tender embraces, as Fernando basically forced Lance to stay at his Barcelona house.

Now, Fernando kisses him carefully starting from his forehead to his cheek to his lips, as if they have all the time in the world.

But he also kisses him with intent, each peck carefully planned out and lingering, as if this is the last time Fernando will ever see him.

Their little pocket of space evaporates and Lance has to make his way through the gates. He takes one last glance at the other man, and has no doubt that nothing in the spacetime continuum, could keep them apart for too long.

Title: Starting Over

Description: Espella reunites with Carmine in London… Eve is also there.

Spoilers: For PLvsAA

Set: A month after PLvsAA

Warnings: Mentions of the Great Fire and Espella’s catatonic state following that, but not in much detail… Vague descriptions of a car crash (of course) and a broken leg.

Note: For Day 2 of @layton-npc-appreciation-week - I went with V.S Phoenix Wright. Not sure if Eve and Espella count as NPCs, but you don’t get more NPC than a character who appeared for like 2 minutes in the opening cutscene.

Carmine hadn’t seen Espella Cantabella since he’d crashed his car into the Riverside Park, one month ago.

In Carmine’s defence, they had been pursued by witches… or rather, what Carmine had perceived to be witches.

It had been nothing more than an illusion evoked by a mind-altering drug, according to Professor Layton.

The Professor had also revealed that Labyrinthia— the medieval city plagued by magic and witches— did not exist as Carmine remembered it.

All of it had been a facade— a story— constructed to help Espella live with the trauma of a devastating fire from over a decade ago.

The Legendary Fire that had consumed a town and the majority of its inhabitants… except for Espella, Arthur Cantabella, Newton Belduke and his daughter.

A young Espella, convinced she had destroyed the town after being possessed by the ‘Great Witch Bezella’, had entered a catatonic state.

It seemed nothing could break the spell that had fallen over Espella… but then, Arthur Cantabella had written her a story about the banished witches and the triumphant townsfolk.

More stories had followed, until Labyrinthia came to be.

Carmine had stumbled into Espella’s story by mistake. He had been extremely lost and subsequently, stupefied by the events he’d witnessed in Labyrinthia.

At the best of times, Carmine was strapped for cash… How was a detective meant to survive in a medieval town when he couldn’t tell fact from fiction? The illogical court system had made his head spin!

He had wandered through the streets— penniless and hungry— until he’d bumped into a girl who took pity on him.

She had brought him to a bakery and given him of a loaf bread for free…

The bakery owner— upon discovering this transgression— had decided Carmine would work at the shop to pay her back, and she would put a roof over his head in the meantime.

And so, Carmine had found himself living alongside Espella Cantabella, Patty Eclaire and Eve the Cat.

What had started as repaying a debt became Patty and Espella patiently teaching him how to bake (and forgiving Carmine’s many mishaps!), listening to the neighbours’ gossip, exploring the Great Archive with Espella, learning the history and the strange customs of Labyrinthia…

Hurrying home with Espella and avoiding the Order of Knights’ hard gaze…

Laughing with Espella and Patty during a flour-fight—

Getting interrupted by the intrusion of five knights, who accused Espella (kind, gentle Espella) of being the Great Witch…

Defending Espella while Patty warded them off with a rolling pin…

After that, Patty had begged Carmine to take Espella and flee— far away from Labyrinthia. Carmine had agreed.

But he and Espella had been followed, and knocked off the road.

(Curse his terrible luck and his last name…!)

Carmine had been injured, of course, but Espella could still run. He had urged her to go without him— to find Professor Layton and deliver his letter.

Much to his relief, Espella had obliged; she had left him to traverse a city she didn’t even know the name of.

Carmine didn’t blame Espella. Not for anything at all.

He’d wanted her to be safe and he knew Professor Layton would ensure that.

And the Professor had succeeded! He had solved the puzzle of Labyrinthia! (With some help from his assistants and an American defence attorney…)

Most importantly, he had helped shed light on Espella’s troubled past.

Espella was free now. Free to be herself. Free to process her trauma. Free to leave Labyrinthia, at long last…

She was meant to be visiting Carmine today, at the hospital.

(He’d recovered from the injuries he had sustained during the car crash, but since then, he had broken his leg while trying to escape out of a window on the ward.)

Carmine glanced at the clock on the wall of his hospital room. Espella had said she would arrive at 3pm… but it was coming up to 4pm now.

He frowned. Where was Espella? Had she simply been delayed during her journey?

Had the boat ride from Labyrinthia gone smoothly…?

Or had something happened to Espella when she reached London?

Was she travelling alone? Could she have gotten lost? What if she had been waylaid by some lowlife in a dark alley?

Just as Carmine was envisioning every misfortune that could have befallen poor Espella, he heard two tentative knocks at the door.

“C-come in!” Carmine exclaimed as he leapt out of bed. His left leg, wrapped in a cast, crumpled under him as soon as he tried to stand. “Ahi—!”

He landed on the floor just as the door opened…

Espella was standing in the doorway.

Her beaming smile faded when she realised Carmine had collapsed.

She let out a cry that sounded both ecstatic and concerned.

Carmine was nearly bowled over again as she caught him in a hug.

Somehow, with her arms locked around his neck, Carmine choked out a laugh. “You made it, then?”

Espella’s grip loosened. She looked at him and nodded. “Made it.”

He smiled. “I’m so glad!”

“There’s someone I want you to meet…”

Espella’s head turned towards the door, where Carmine noticed a figure waiting in the shadows.

The figure glided into the room and Carmine recognised her.

“You—!” Carmine gasped. He pushed Espella behind him, but he kept glaring at the intruder— the one who had once posed as the ‘Great Witch’. The one who had caused Espella so much grief. “Stay back, you…!”

“Carmine— it’s alright!” Espella protested, gently moving him aside. “This is—“

“Are you— being influenced again, Espella?” Carmine peered at her. (She seemed lucid…)

There was a sigh from across the room. “Espella… Haven’t you explained everything to him?”

“I did, in my letter!” Espella insisted. She pointed from Carmine to the purple-haired woman. “Carmine, this is my friend, Eve—“

“Eve?” Carmine repeated. He glanced around. “Where is Eve?” Aiming another glower at the purple-haired woman, he demanded, “Have you done something to Eve?”

The woman rubbed her forehead with her hand and huffed, “I think you’re confused—“

“Eve the cat is fine and she’s back home,” Espella clarified. “Eve Belduke, my childhood friend, is here.”

Eve— the woman, Newton Belduke’s daughter— gave him a small wave.

“Ah…” Carmine cleared his throat. “I’m sorry— can we start over?”

“I believe I’m the one who owes you an apology,” Eve Belduke said solemnly.

Espella gave her a reassuring smile. Carmine hummed.

Eve exhaled. “But yes, let’s start over…”

cookie run story idea prompt because I'm already writing too many but I also really love this one

I have no idea if it's been done already or not but if it hasn't then someone get on it right now

this involves the headcanon that eclair and roguefort cookie are siblings, right?

and eclair and almond are like kinda friends even though i can't remember if they've EVER interacted in canon

so basically, Almond Cookie spots Roguefort (or Phantom Bleu as he better knows them) out in public and is like 'what the fuck are you doing here im gonna arrest you'

but just then... Eclair Cookie pops up and he's like, 'WOAH! MY FRIEND AND MY SIBLING KNOW EACH OTHER?' and he's all happy because he has no idea that the two of them are enemies or that Roguefort is a criminal

and so then Almond can't bring himself to hurt Eclair Cookie by breaking the news

and Roguefort Cookie doesn't want Eclair to find out that they're a criminal and be disappointed in them,

so basically it's the two of them trying to act like they don't fucking despise each other around Eclair while also doing nemesis things behind his back

chaos ensues, friendships are made (or destroyed)

“Dimitri.” She approached the question carefully, as if hesitant to attract Fate’s attention. “Have you ever played Windy Lions?”

Dimitri glanced down in bemusement as she rolled onto her side and cleanly snipped the pair of dandelions with her nails. Mirrored pearls of milky sap hung suspended on the broken stalks.

She handed one to him with the sort of piety normally reserved for religious paragons. Mischief twinkled in her eyes as she played the other stalk within her palm.

“On the count of three, we blow,” she grinned. “Whoever scatters more of their puff with a single breath gets to ask the other person a question— any question they can think of.”

Dimitri quizzically turned his dandelion over in his hand. “That’s Windy Lions?” he inquired. “But why a question?”

“Oh, it adds to the excitement,” Eliane said, waving her free hand vaguely. “You know, because the person has to answer truthfully. It lets you peek into someone’s heart.”

“Ah.” Dimitri relaxed his brows as the puzzle fell into place. He didn’t know much about matters of the heart, but he did understand good-natured competition.

im reading an article about how vitriolic people visiting the national parks have gotten, and it is SO cathartic to see my exact experiences in grocery retail be restated by the customer service reps working in the parks.

like its awful, obvious. the average customer has gotten so nasty, and the employees Do Not deserve the treatment they’re receiving. but during 2020/2021, people seemed to think that those viral Nasty Customer videos were 1) not common and 2) relegated just to grocery/retail. and i cant speak for every single hospitality and customer service sector and store, but i can say that at my store that sort of vitriolic outbreak became VERY common. not constant, but common enough to bump the baseline up.

my manager and i had a conversation where she said a lot of her friends-- some of whom had been in the hospitality or customer service industry for over a decade-- were considering a career change because it was SO BAD and no one could even fathom how to move forward. none of us could imagine it ever getting better. our New Normal was people screaming at and berating us every day, blaming us for mask mandates and vaccines and supply shortages. threatening legal action and physical violence. of people intentionally trying to get us sick and terrorizing us. everything was an argument with no hope of de-escalation; it genuinely wouldve been less inciting to tell some of those customers “go fuck yourself” than it was to tell them “im so sorry, but.” and all that while we were surrounded by the extremely smothering reality that no one cared if we died and everyone considered us sub-human.

everyone i know who gave a fuck quit shortly after i did, because none of us could handle it anymore. this includes people who’d worked at that store since it opened, some of our most decorated and knowledgeable coworkers.

like. i dunno yall. its kind of like how you cant describe how things just Make Sense as you near the latter half of your 20s; i cant put into words just how horrifically awful customer service was at that time. if you didnt personally experience it, everything we say sounds like an exaggeration and hyperbole.

and i cannot stress this enough: its still that bad. i would imagine most customer service and hospitality places had the same thing happen: a mass exodus of everyone who knew what they were doing because they could not stand the abuse anymore, and a rotating door of new hires that Refuse (rightfully so!!!) to tolerate the abuse. there is a new breed of customer that genuinely Does Not Care about employees and see pleas of humanity and kindness as a challenge to see how quickly they can break the employee at the desk.

this is especially relevant now, with it being the holidays. employees are more short staffed and overworked than ever, and customers some how have even less patience. customers dont plan literally five minutes out, and then blame employees for not materializing their needs before them on a silver platter.

anyways. i dont know how this article ends, but i have a pretty good guess.

#ive mentioned this before but right before i quit i was having massive disassociation episodes and 8+ hr long anxiety attacks #then my work place announced they were ending employee mask mandates on what basically amounted to a pinky promise of vaccination #i Broke and i wrote up my resignation on the spot and i was out two work-days later.#i was so scared that it took me a month to even write up a new resume and start applying to jobs #blocked / forgot a LOT of the shit but like. we had to call the cops on a Bunch of people.#we had a whole group of like 20+ individuals come in maskless in like may of 2020 who didnt buy anything and just wanted to terrorize us #i had an old dude accuse my coffee bar of being in on a seattle-wide conspiracy to discontinue decaf coffee For Him Specifically #some lady berated me for ten minutes because she didnt like the answer i gave when she asked what filling we used for our eclairs #a regular had been banned from the local ulta for abusing the employees so NATURALLY she came to our store and rammed people with carts #threw shit at us and repeatedly pressured the cashiers into committing fraud #like it just. it Gets To You.#i genuinely loved that job. i planned on staying there for Years.#but it was so soul crushingly awful.#take prepandemic retail and triple how bad it was and you'll probably be close to COVID era customer service
