Remarkable rocks of Pine Creek Pass, Sierra Nevada Mountains, California
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pine Creek Pass is a less-used trailhead in the Eastern Sierra of California. It's a steep slog of about 3,500 vertical feet in about 6 miles, ending at just over 11,000 feet. The scenery is remarkable, but so are the rocks.
This an unnamed pinnacle of dark gabbro which has been intruded by younger granite bands. The gray cliff to the right is intruded by the same younger granite bands!
Fractures in the gabbro of the stripy mountain filled with feldspar crystals (formed when liquid). The lighter band is offset slightly by the white vein, which shows lateral movement across that vein when it was forming. These are called en-echelon fractures.
Younger granite intruding (as bands) older granodiorite and a xenolith eclogite inclusion - a chunk of unrelated rock carried by the original melted granodiorite (complex relationships here!).
Granodiorite polished smooth by the abrasive action of glaciers during the last Ice Age (~21,000 years ago in this area).
Outcrop of glacially polished granodiorite.
Glacially polished granodiorite with a thick intrusion (dike) of pink granite that has been offset laterally by a younger and thinner dike of different granite.

Channeling Ansel Adams
Tumblr media
This is a shot from almost two years ago now (I can't believe it's been that long since I've been up into the Eastern Sierra). I was out on a 3 day trip for some backcountry hiking in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, but some forest fires in the Sierra made for less than ideal conditions as the days progressed.
I cut the backcountry hikes short by a day and headed back into the town of Mammoth Lakes for my final day where I found some shorter more local hikes to engage in. Shorter days on trail with less strain meant I wouldn't be breathing in nearly the volume of potentially harmful particulates the forest fires created (even while being masked up).
Here I was on my way up to a lake I had visited once or twice before. It's not a long hike and not difficult, even though there is some rapid elevation gain. While I was on my way up, I rounded a corner of the trail and the trees opened up along the crest and this view presented itself.
The light and shadow mixed with the atmospheric layers (sadly caused by fires) really caught my eye, but because I was shooting in the late morning I knew the light would be harsh, washing out some of the color. For this reason I decided to convert to black and white and really punch up the contrast to tell a far more moody story. It seemed apropos considering the previous couple of days I had spend traipsing all over the Ansel Adams Wilderness here just to the northwest.
Let's go exploring.

Today is March 29th 2024 and the time 0800.
When I opened my eyes this morning at 0500 I wiped the condensation off my back window to see how much it snowed overnight to validate my decision to not hike today. I can’t even see the mountains right now which is sorta weird because they’re right fucking there! It’s actually really nice because there’s not many people here or at the main climbing area.
I know this is my “trail blog” but it’s pretty much my online journal at this point that I pretend nobody reads so I can write my thoughts down without feeling any pressure to censor myself. If anyone I know actually reads this please don’t mention it to me because it’s sorta awkward.
Well anyways I’ve been having some better mornings — despite not hiking because of the weather — which has been a major relief. Most mornings when I wake up the darkness is just looming over my head, but the last few days have been pretty good.
I think moving out here to Bishop to be closer to my kids, not drinking anymore, hiking the Eastern Sierra almost everyday, focusing on my health, landing a job at Kennedy Meadows, and having planned hikes have all been game changers for my mental health.
And I’m not exactly sure how I should word this to keep people’s privacy and anonymity intact, but here I go. So I’ve been struggling with validation and things like that ever since the breakup or whatever. And I’m not one to jump on dating apps or bullshit like that just to validate myself. If it’s other people’s thing thats cool, it’s just not for me. I rather just let life happen and let things happen organically and that’s exactly what has happened.
A good friend of mine from trail and his partner basically invited me into their lives because they are attracted to me, and I’m attracted to them, too. And honestly it feels good. It feels good to know that a good looking couple finds me attractive. Actually, it feels fucking amazing and is very validating for me.
I think all of these moves and changes I’ve been making for myself have been slowly improving my life in positive ways and I’m fucking stoked about it!
This winter has been a long one with many gloomy days, but I can finally feel a slice of sunshine warming my heart and it feels fucking amazing!

Milkyway Season is Upon Us
Tumblr media
To be fair it's Milkyway season year-round as some part of it can always be seen, so it's more accurate to say that it's Milkyway Core season as the core is only visible in the northern hemisphere between mid April (ish) and mid September (ish) at various times of the night.
Regardless, I'm really rather excited to get out there and find some fun and interesting places to image the night sky this year. The itch to explore is rather strong right now I and I'm really looking forward to what the adventures this year have to offer.
This shot is one of my earlier efforts in capturing the Milkyway (from about 4 or so years ago), and was taken while my wife and I were exploring the magnificent Eastern Sierra along the eastern edge of California. I was very pleased with this composition when I captured it, and I feel it has really held up over the years.
Let's go exploring.
