The E3 Video Game Trade Show Has Officially Ended
The End Of An Era: The E3 Video Game Trade Show Has Officially Ended. #E3 #VideoGames #Entertainment
It’s the end of an era. After three years of stalled attempts, and a forced cancellation due to the global health epidemic, COVID-19, the E3 Video Game Industry Trade Show has finally reached the end as the Entertainment Software Association formally announced the end of the event. Some say that E3 outlived its usefulness in the wake of Gaming Brands such as Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony…

With E3 likely being dead, do you think we'll start to see companies move their announcements and presentations at other events? (Gamescom, PAX, Paris Games Week, etc)
No. This is because E3's importance is no longer the fact it's a lot of companies all gathering in one place anymore. E3's actual importance is the calendar date that it was held - mid June. Even if E3 were to go away permanently, we would likely still see large publisher announcements and press conferences happen during the time E3 used to be held, because game publishers still need to market and announce new games.
Tumblr media
In order to generate, maintain, and increase player interest in their upcoming games, publishers need to periodically release new information to the public. The goal of this is to build interest steadily in a new game over time, hitting the maximum marketing push just before release. If we don't release new info often enough, interest falls. If we release too much at once, interest also falls - there's just too much to follow and players get desensitized. We've gotten better results from releasing new bits and pieces periodically - slowly at first, and then increasing the cadence as launch approaches.
Tumblr media
You should note that CES is in January, DICE is in February, GDC is in March, E3 is in June, Comic Con is in July, Gamescom and GenCon are August, Tokyo Game Show is in September, Paris Games Week is in November, and the Game Awards are in December. Publishers need a June announcement vehicle. E3 has been the most convenient one so far, but it's the date of the event that's far more important today than its name.

E3 is officially over
Tumblr media
Any E3 memories you would like to share?
I saw the news and it was really disappointing to see it end but after the events that happened during and post-pandemic it became an unfortunate inevitability. I feel like the writing was really on the wall the moment you had a major studio like Sony decide they were above E3 and basically hold their own event specifically for themselves. E3 especially became expendable when they showed how Summer Games Fest could ultimately take its place. It's kind of crazy how the dude from GameTrailers just took over everything video games and now E3 joins OG G4 in the digital underground.
Speaking of G4TV, I really missed getting to watch all the E3 events through them. It was like their fucking WrestleMania and we got to see it on television.
While we are fortunate to have other alternatives it certainly won't replace the vibe and the spectacle that E3 once had. I'll regret never getting to experience it myself. As far as I'm concerned E3 2019 was the series finale and getting to have Keanu Reeves repping Cyberpunk 2077 for that was quite the highlight that I'll never forget. I'll also never forget finding out about that game called Unravel and the entire wholesome presentation for it. That alone sold me on the game and it actually really set the tone for just what type of experience that was going to be. Still to this day the most touched a video game has ever made me feel.
And then there's that one Cammy from the Street Fighter event but we won't get into that.
I'm also in a way going to miss ALL the awkward hold for applause moments. Like, these people would be stubborn and wait for those hands to move. Nobody would keep the presentation going. "You ain't clapping for this mobile game? Well, I'll fucking wait till you do."

E3 is Dead

E3 was once the epicenter of video game news. Sadly, E3 became less and less relevant over the years with the rise of social media and publishers holding their own digital showcases.

IGN reports that Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft will all be skipping E3 2023.
Microsoft will reportedly be doing a summer showcase (with some PR speak about timing that translates to ‘probably right around when E3 traditionally is,’) per the article, but not having booth presence.
Microsoft is ON THE ESA BOARD, so if the report is accurate and they’re skipping it is DEAD dead.

Here they are! E3 Confirms Will Come Back In Offline and Online Format In 2023
Since it was legalized in 1995, the Electronic Entertainment Expo or commonly abbreviated as E3, has become a regular event held every year. E3 takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center and is one of the biggest gaming events, the place where publishers/publishers/developers big or small announce some of their latest games.
Tumblr media
Appearing in Offfile Format and Online, Here's E3 Confirmation in 2023 Upcoming!
Unfortunately, after more than two decades without problems, E3 is finally "taking a break" due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 the other day. A year later, E3 was held again but with an online pattern only and in 2022, E3 was not held again. Many worry that the absence of E3 in 2022 will continue in the next few years, but the Show Software Association or ESA as E3's parent organization, make sure that doesn't happen.
To the Washington Post, ESA president Stan Pierre-Louis confirmed that E3 would return in 2023. He even explained that next year's E3 will not only come in a digital or online format, but also off-line where players can see firsthand new information from their favorite publisher/publisher/developer.
Many Are Starting To Ask If E3 Still Needs To Exist
Although this is good news for those who miss E3, many are asking whether E3 is still needed to always be there. Just before the COVID-19 outbreak, E3 2019 was attended by fewer visitors when compared to the previous year. In addition, many AAA game publishers/publishers/developers are currently holding their own events, apart from other events such as Geoff Keighley's Summer Games Fest.
It's interesting to see how the future of E3 will look in the next few years, coupled with the presence of the same event in an online-only pattern which incidentally is more "reachable" for some developers and efficient because some games don't have to compete to attract the attention of direct visitors.

The Entertainment Software Association has officially announced that The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), once held every summer as the games industry’s biggest convention, is officially dead.
After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye. Thanks for the memories. GGWP
“We know the entire industry, players and creators alike, have a lot of passion for E3,” said Entertainment Software Association president Stanley Pierre-Louis told The Washington Post. “We share that passion. We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but it’s the right thing to do given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners.”

Todays rip: 25/01/2024
Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that
Season 3 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips Volume A
Ripped by Grambam36, Twonko
youtube
Late last year, we received official confirmation that the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3, was no more. The signs were everywhere, as they'd failed to hold any meaningful event past the pandemic and were fumbling even before then, yet it was still kind of sad to see the news spelled out officially - that the gaming community's Christmas Day was going away forever, in favor of the more condensed, streamlined, and in general a lot less charming Summer Games Fest. And yeah, the excitement for game reveals and trailers is still prominent with Keighley's shows, though a tool he may be, but...there was a sort of memetic energy to the E3 shows in particular, the per-company press conferences that were always subtly coated in delicious cringe, those are now effectively lost. Though the show may be lost, the memories remain - and I'll always remember just how fun each of the SiIvaGunner channel's per-show channel events were, from Season 1 to Season 4 Episode 1.
I did indeed cover a rip related to the E3 show once before on here, with Take Me Home, Country Snow - a rip focusing on the ever-memetic quality of Bethesda's Todd Howard. That's a well-spread joke in the gaming community, yet Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that focuses on far more of an in-joke, one finally meeting its natural endpoint after years of build-up: Ridley, before his debut in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, being criticized as being far too big to be fit for the game's roster. "Bigley" became a minor meme on the Miiverse forums on Wii U/3DS, and it was just generally a very funny idea to spread about - that a character was simply too massive to ever possibly be able to be used in fighting.
It's likely that Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that wasn't even made with the intention of releasing after Ridley's reveal during Nintendo's 2018 E3 show, but withholding the rip to release it with the perfect timing just adds to the joke even further - the visuals of the rip present Ridley as the surprise new character, only to reveal that his character size is so astronomically big that the game literally cannot load him into a match. The rip's audio joke itself is initially based on a Season 1 classic, Vs. Meta Horat, mashing up Ridley's theme with The Nutshack theme, before taking on a very patently Twonko twist - you may recognize his name from Crompton Racing, and back when he was still with the channel he was one of the biggest proponents and contributors to making Jake Paul a recurring joke on the channel. The rip effectively turns into a - funny enough - BIGGER version of Vs. Meta Horat, still featuring The Nutshack prominently, but overriding it with It's Everyday Bro and other sources. Most notably, and funniest to me personally, is the line iconic to many Smash Bros. fans of the time before Ultimate's release - "RIDLEY'S BIG AS SHIT!".
I talked yesterday about the feeling of, admiring rips and media in general from a distance - that I'm able to love rips like Guilty Eyes Creeper despite holding no real attachment to the Love Live franchise or its music. Yet with clips from Shokio's old infamous Ridley discussion video, that voicebyte that was heard so often in so many hilarious contexts before even the release of Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS, it does feel oh so rewarding to feel fully in-on-the-joke with Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that. The signature styles of the two rippers of course helps make it an immensely fun listen, but it really was just the comedic timing of the moment and execution of the joke that sealed the deal for this becoming one of my favorite 2018 rips.

I feel like Zack is totally the type of person to be way, way into video games. Who gets dragged into gaming with him the most, and who would he take to a live gaming event like E3?
Ohh puppy is definitely obsessed with video games. He's from a video game! And it's the general consensus amongst the fandom, from what I've seen. Every single fic I've read so far has Zack with some cool setup in his apartment, where he drags Cloud into gaming with him for hours.
Speaking of Cloud....
"Come on, Cloudy, it's just one more round!" Zack whined. He curled his back, leaning it against Cloud's stiff shoulder. "I promise we'll go to sleep right after! Please?"
Cloud was pointedly ignoring him, as told by the thinly disguised frown on his lips and the discarded game controller on his lap.
"Zack, we've been sitting here for three hours."
"And?" Zack pouted.
Cloud huffed, craning his neck to check the clog hung on the dining room wall. "And I'm pretty sure there was there was one last slice of pizza in that box." He nodded over to the box on the coffee table.
It had been a large meat lover's pizza—Zack's choosing, of course—that had been consumed save for one last slice, previously laying untouched on the spot where a pile of ants now scurried around.
Zack whined again, burying his spiked into Cloud's neck. "Three hours isn't even that much! How long long do you think we're gonna be at the Gaia Games expo next week?"
Cloud wrinkled his nose. "The what?"
Zack sat up straighter. Pure mischief sparkled in his mako blue eyes, complimenting the wicked smirk on his lips. "Oh...nothing." His voice was an octave higher.
Cloud grunted, tightening the grip on his crossed arms.
Zack grinned, then got up to turn the console off. "Just make sure you're free next Friday at 6 AM."
Little did Cloud know that if he failed to meet Zack's request, he would be kidnapped and sleepeled until he awoke at Midgar's largest gaming con.

2023 Gaming Wrap-Up
Welcome back to what is apparently a yearly tradition on this blog: the Gaming Wrap-Up! As we drag ourselves to the end of 2023, it’s always good to take a look back at the last 12 months and try to figure out just what was going on there. And well, this year…kinda sucked. It had a lot going on - it was stressful and exhausting at best for so many of us, but there’s always a bit of good within the bad (for example, on a more personal note, this was the year where I actually got a few of my articles purchased by publishers! Now I can, by definition, call myself a professional writer! Go me!), and video games are always an excellent escape from reality.   2023 had loads of great game releases, including some highly-anticipated sequels and remakes, while the business side of the gaming world had a fair few blunders and foot-shooting (Unity, anyone?). Before the end of the year, let’s all take a moment to remember all the highlights of the gaming world of 2023 - enjoy!
Tumblr media
JANUARY-MARCH    Let’s get started with a bit of the old and a bit of the new - a pair of high-quality remakes of some classic survival horror games, Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, set a new bar for gaming remakes, with RE4 even being nominated for GOTY! Meanwhile, Pizza Tower took the indie genre by storm with its deranged animations and surprisingly catchy music, and Hi-Fi Rush ambushed us with a sneaky release and some toe-tapping rhythmic combat.   Fans of classic Nintendo games had a bit of a sad start to the year however, with the announcement that Nintendo would be completely shutting down all online services for the 3DS and Wii U, basically pulling the life support plug on the two platforms for good. Additionally, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) continues its streak of rough years; with X-Box, Sony and Nintendo all foregoing attendance, this years’ E3 was announced to be cancelled. With a rise in developers and publishers preferring digital and social media announcements over live shows thanks to the impact of COVID, could this be signalling the end of live gaming conventions like E3?
Tumblr media
APRIL-JUNE    Moving on, 2023 also saw the release of some particularly exciting sequels - Dead Island 2 finally released after 9 years in development hell while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom blew its GOTY-winning predecessor out of the water. Street Fighter 6 brought in Metro City veterans and newcomers alike, and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor continued the tale of Cal Kestis in his battle against the Empire in a galaxy far, far away.   From the small screen to the big screen, The Super Mario Bros. Movie joined the small-but-growing ranks of video game movie adaptations that are actually good, thanks to staying true to the games’ actual identity instead of trying to turn it into something else like so many other game-to-film adaptations. E3’s cancellation also wasn’t enough to stop the Summer Games Fest from being held, featuring a mix of live and digital shows and announcements. Also, this year was quite the mixed bag for game publishing companies - Embracer Group, a publisher for major development teams such as Gearbox Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics, went under some massive structural changes due to a major deal falling through, and was just one of many publishers that underwent huge changes in 2023.
Tumblr media
JULY-SEPTEMBER    The latter half of the year didn’t see quite as many major game releases, but it was certainly a case of quality over quantity - Baldur’s Gate 3, an absolute narrative feat, practically overtook the entire second half of the year for both those familiar with the series or D&D and players entering the Forgotten Realms for the first time. Oh, and Starfield was released too.   Meanwhile, a cornerstone of video game voice acting, Charles Martinet, retired from voicing the Mario bros. Having provided the iconic voices of Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi since 1994, Charles still works as a global ambassador for Nintendo in conventions across the world, while the superstar voice role would be taken over by Kevin Afghani later in the year.   Back in the business side of the gaming world, Unity - the group behind one of the most prominent game development engines in the industry - completely shot themselves in the foot this year as they announced an incredibly oppressive retroactive licensing fee to begin next year. This new fee would mean that every single developer that had ever used their engine would need to pay Unity for every copy of their game that has ever sold, even from before the fee took effect. Naturally, everyone disliked this, especially within the indie game community. The sheer amount of backlash caused Unity to rework the agreement to be “less aggressive”, but their reputation is beyond saving now.
Tumblr media
OCTOBER-DECEMBER    2023 looks to be closing off with a bang - in yet another major simultaneous release, October 20th saw Spider-Man 2 expand the urban playground of everyone’s favourite web-slinging duo while Super Mario Bros. Wonder brought Nintendo’s flagship franchise in a fresh new direction. Meanwhile, another highly anticipated sequel, Alan Wake II, spun a terrifying new narrative just in time for Hallowe’en.   Of course, the biggest talking point for the end of the year was the Game Awards! Baldur’s Gate 3 beat out some incredibly tough competition for Game of the Year and swept the rest of the awards alongside Alan Wake II; a handful of exciting new games were announced, including a sequel to the classic World of Goo and a vampire-hunting action adventure starring Marvel’s Blade; and we learned that the Call of Duty developers can’t take a joke. However, the biggest announcement arrived just before the awards, bringing the entire gaming community together for one of the most anticipated sequels in video game history (besides Half-Life 3): Grand Theft Auto VI. Set for a 2025 release, 12 years after its predecessor, GTA6 returns to the sunburnt beaches of Vice City, introducing a modern Bonnie & Clyde as its’ pair of playable protagonists Lucia and Jason.
Tumblr media
LOOKING FORWARD    So, aside from the GTA fans that are probably cryogenically freezing themselves until 2025, what are your plans for next year now that 2023 is nearly over? There’s plenty of other games to look forward to - Star Wars and Marvel fans will be getting another exciting set of games with Star Wars Outlaws putting players in the shoes of the galaxy’s next big name in the galactic underworld, while Wolverine will be hacking and slashing his way through the neon-lit Madripoor. Taking our hands off the controller for a moment, a handful of other games will be taking their turn on the silver screen with a promising-looking Fallout streaming series and a somewhat more sketchy-looking Borderlands film. Can’t be any worse than the Halo series, right…right?
I mentioned in last years’ wrap-up that 2023’s E3 is hopefully back on track, which has aged a bit poorly; well, there’s no need to worry about that this time as next year’s E3 has already been cancelled. At least that means saving on tickets, but is the age of big gaming conventions coming to a close? Time will tell, especially depending on if Summer Games Fest is still in the works. Maybe things are switching to a more digital-based platform for game announcements - as someone not fond of crowds, that suits me just fine.
But, hey, that’s not until next year. Until then, I hope you enjoyed this look back at the gaming world of 2023, and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2024!   Happy holidays!

I keep thinking about it, and I have to know what a Tony Stark Expert, such as yourself, thinks- How do you think our beloved, depressed genius would react to the situation with E3?
Honestly? It's Tony so he'd either not care or he'd up and decide to throw the first, newly established Stark Video Game Expo and it'd be outrageously awesome and over the top
