Some backwards series/animation set in the year 3000 something: "We've regressed to the 1800s , so there's homophobia again... That's why they can't be together."
Me, having more than two brain cells: "Same sex relationships, polyamorous relationships, etc are just another fact of life. They're keeping their relationship a secret from their coworkers because of regulations regarding workplace ethics and relationships. Since none of them wants to transferred out, they keep it under wraps. Everyone knows, no one cares because they're the most professional people ever."

Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy is elite feminist science fiction that digs into biopolitics and the 1970s as dystopia. Connie is a fat Chicana on welfare who is institutionalized after defending her niece from an abusive partner. While struggling to regain her freedom and autonomy, she establishes contact with a person named Luciente and a possible future world, the utopia of 2137 Mattapoisett, a world hard-earned from years of revolution that's based in sexual freedom, true community and emotional catharsis, found family, sustainability, and non-violence.
Piercy is a genius digging into what utopia could look like. I'd be fascinated to know what Mattapoisett could look like now—I suspect more disturbance of the gender binary would be in order—but her world is utterly revolutionary: anti-capitalist, people use "per" pronouns, children are "comothered" and raised to have autonomy and "inknowing" from an early age. Meanwhile Connie struggles in her present, as a new set of doctors with an experimental surgery appear on the scene, reflecting that the true battle of revolution, of where our future will end up, comes down to the most vulnerable of us. The novel is compelling, suspenseful, and asks us many questions of ourselves. I recommend the edition with a new introduction by Piercy which highlights a couple of things she imagines she could change if given the chance.
"The point of creating futures," Piercy writes, "is to get people to imagine what they want and don't want to happen down the road and maybe do something about it." Connie is skeptical and sometimes resentful of Mattapoisett, but ultimately seeing a /possible/ future helps her to understand what is fundamentally wrong about her present. That's what Woman on the Edge of Time has been for me, since I first read it in college in a class about 1970s feminist sci fi: a book that made me reflect on my present, imagine futures, and think about what we need to do to get to the good ones.
Content warnings:
Major: institutionalization, domestic abuse/abuse, medical trauma, sterilization, ableism.
Also: mention of sexual assault, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, grief, n-word use, homophobia

The New Draconians
The Process
Originally conceived in 2015-2017.  On the surface it’s an Afrofuturistic cyberpunk story that speaks to late stage capitalism, and the long hard road from Dystopia to Utopia. But scratch under the surface, and it’s a condemnation of Western Imperialism throughout the diaspora, directed at Africa and beyond. It’s now the 22nd century, and against the backdrop of the climate crisis the tables have turned.

My Little Pony: Make Your Mark - The Broken and Awoken
Broken: Mere months, weeks or even days after Twilight saw Luster Dawn off on her new quest to learn friendship's magical value, some rando unicorn gave an earth pony a boo-boo, everyone quarrels over it, and minutes later, Twilight says "fuck this", makes rocks, puts the magic of the pony clans in the rocks, and scatters them to be left in separate societies to keep as collector's items. Because Twilight from late Friendship is Magic and beyond is a she-prick. To Tartarus' blazing pits with her.
Awoken: Twilight's utopian reign lasted for decades, Luster Dawn completed her road to maturity and responsibility, but she said "fuck that" to the throne, so a different successor needed to be found, and then suddenly, an earth pony accidentally died by a unicorn's horn, which at first isn't treated as a big deal, but it plants a germ that would eventually grow into a new disharmony crisis, thanks to Opaline, who's probably Twilight's true successor and maybe relative or something. Years upon years pass, and slowly, but surely, the utopia turns to dystopia, and magic is taken, sealed permanently in a crystal and kept in Opaline's body. Twilight thinks this is bullshit, so she forcefully rips it out of her and splits the crystal in three, with a new on/off switch attached. She denies Opaline the throne, the bitch slithers away somehow, and our heroic princess decides to let the Equestria monarchy end with herself, because her friends had gotten elderly by this point and she doesn't want to continue living in this world if they're not in it anymore.
I don't know, what're you're ideas?

Nicole help I have finished Sangfielle and I don't know where to go next FaTT-wise. Please share with me your wisdom.
Okay before I type a big wall of text, take this quiz here.
I've taken it twice and both times I was assigned Autumn in Hieron, which is in fact the season I started with back in 2017.
Why you should start with Autumn in Hieron:
It's the very beginning! Yes there will be a few in-jokes from their video game streaming days, but those are kept to a minimum. There's a scene in the first few episodes with a nice skeleton man that will be called back to throughout the show.
It's fantasy.
You will hear the moment Austin decides that yes, Keith is right, based on the wording of a letter these pirates should be undead. Time to change all the plans. This was probably the moment that got me interested in tabletop roleplaying games.
Boat Party. :)
Hey did you ever worry that if left unchecked you would care about Books and Knowledge too much and lose sight of the value of people? No? Just me? Anyways you will meet Fantasmo and think that he is a dick and then he will still blow you away (probably, no promises).
Is it still autumn in Australia or have you entered winter now? It really does have lovely fall vibes.
Reasons why you should not start with Autumn in Hieron:
You care about """audio quality""".
Idk you're in a sci-fi mood.
You don't want long-term investment but rather shorter stories. (Listen to Fall of Magic for fantasy, or Bluff City Season 1 for weird East Coast America.)
If the audio quality is really too much for you, start with Marielda and then listen to the two Autumn in Hieron recap episodes. But like, Nav this season is so good. So good. It's fully transcribed here.
Sci-Fi?
Okay so if you want to listen to their mech seasons instead, you can start at any of the four current places: COUNTER/Weight, Twilight Mirage, Road to PARTIZAN (collection of one-shots), and PARTIZAN. I do not recommend that you start with their upcoming season as it will be a direct follow up to PARTIZAN.
COUNTER/Weight: A smaller season. Dystopia and revolution.
Twilight Mirage: A long season with big goals. The end of a utopia and the beginning of something new.
PARTIZAN: A war within a war.
These seasons take place in the same universe but are separated by so many thousands of years that you do not need to listen to them order.

something about cyberpunk feels like it would fit perfectly in dystopia: road to utopia,,,,it sounds and feels like a dreamcatcher song
which isn’t saying much since ateez and dreamcatcher could switch songs and still relatively maintain their sounds and story especially with leez and ollounder producing for both of them
but i hope someone gets what i’m saying bc i can’t pinpoint what it is and its driving me nuts, and also cyberpunk is perfection :]

I know my view of the world is mine and is not reality for everyone but I truly believe that we live in a dystopia.
I’ve always loved dystopian concepts and often because dystopias written from certain perspectives and positions work to critique an aspect of the world.
I haven’t read 1984 in awhile and I read it as a child but it critiqued censorship and over regulation of life. It also criticizes endless war and conflict. And people always talk about how 1984 predicted the future and there’s newspeak and blah blah blah. And yes, I get where they’re coming from and I’m partial to agree yet often this mindset works to maintain a status quo. For example, they say LGBTQ are cancelling people for not using the right pronouns and they treat neo pronouns and they them as newspeak. But that just works to create a status quo and not foster queer liberation.
However I think we do live in a world with endless wars and censorship and constant surveillance. It just so happens that capitalism has co-opted those concepts to sell back to us. We live in a capitalist dystopia fuelled by the violence of past and ongoing colonialism. A genocide is happening right now and we digitally see it. Then an algorithm recommends Zionist news sources and videos on YouTube. People get fired from their jobs for speaking out against genocide (hello I’m one of those people I said river to the sea in a land acknowledgment and lost my job instead of just having a civil conversation with HR about alternatives they terminated my queer Asian ass). I have seen people partially give up because of this dystopia and, well I hesitate to use give up as it places responsibility on them rather than a systematic failure of the world so rather I’ll say, systems of harm made someone I know feel as if they had no other option than to die. But what keeps me hoping is the pockets of utopia held within dystopia.
Dystopia that I like have sparks of hope. And often times I don’t need a happy ending where the world is fixed (though I do appreciate them as they help inspire the possibility of radical change if done well but may return to status quo if done poorly). The Electric State is a very interesting world that’s on the verge of dystopia but honestly just is a dystopia. It follows a young girl who drives through the Mohave desert, up the coast to a random peninsula to find the emancipated body of her half brother plugged into a vr machine that is attached to a network where humans accidentally created like I guess a hive mind and people stop taking off the vr headsets and now I guess the weird neural network is trying to reproduce or something who knows it’s Stalenhag it’s vague but the story ends with photos of the headset broken on the beach by the ocean and it’s implied that the girl took her brother out of the network and onto a kayak into the ocean. Now it’s intentionally left vague if her brother survived and now they’re kayaking somewhere else/safe/maybe her brother just likes the ocean. But that’s where the little spark of hope is. She achieved her goal. There was hope in the dystopia. She went on a road trip with a drone controlled by her brother and they had some adventures and saw some sights even if it was terrifying and there were giant drones ambulating creepily along the abandoned towns covered in advertisements with decaying bodies seemingly kept alive just by the neural network of the headset. Anyways even if her brother died, they had each other in those final moments. A dystopia cannot rip apart human kindness. If her brother lives hooray they’re going kayaking, he if he dies he got to die in his sister’s loving arms and taken to rest by sea.
There is hope. Just as there’s hope in the dystopia I live in. I live a very privileged life but it’s at the horrific expense of others. I live on stolen land with people just assuming that since it’s been long enough that means it’s right to continue to take and steal from the land and continue the genocide on the stewards of the land. We wear our orange shirts and call it truth and reconciliation as indigenous people do not have access to clean water. As we build a pipeline through indigenous land due to a colonial law technicality (it being that on the reserve is just the land above the ground but everything below is ours to build a pipeline into like seriously what the fuck). We neglect our histories of violence and displacement. We refuse to acknowledge how it continues to shape our world today. We assimilate assimilate assimilate. I would not fucking be here if the world was kinder. Yet here I am. And I love life. All the horrific colonialism and war and brutality is why I’m here. Eating unethically sourced food at an over priced restaurant served by underpaid employees as capitalism dangles lies of prosperity and neoliberalism. Yet I find utopia at the club. I find utopia at a movie night with friends. Utopia in books and movies. Research papers and lectures. A future imagined divine and queer.
There is no room in our dystopia for giving up and accepting to work for the status quo. However I do not blame anyone for becoming status quo. I can’t remember who said this but if you’re burnt out, thank you for everything you’ve done and please step to the side. There needs no public oration of a public figure giving an open public speech about why they’re giving up social advocacy. We all know how depressing it is. If you need to step back do so. No hero complex or white saviourism is required for utopia. But I can feel hope radiating from so many people and places. The kindness of opening a door for a stranger. For forgiving the colonizer and demanding they take accountability, but acknowledge that the cycles of harm played a hand in colonialism. The indigenous people of Europe were brutalized too. Witches were burned. Women who held cultural knowledge. Labelled as witches and killed. Multiplicities replaced by singularity. But never fully. We know, we remember them.
Indigenous people are here and forever will be. Immigrants and refugees are here until no one is illegal. Queer people will forever exist. We are here, our communities are here and we hold utopia within us.
Queer clubs and drag shows hold utopia for me. A place where queer people can be expressive and love and dance and sing and scream. We love in a dystopia that works to illegalize us. They try and get rid of trans youth. But they never will. Because we will always hold utopia within us. Just as those in Palestine hold utopia. Indigenous people hold utopia. Friends hold utopia. Community holds utopia. The world has been a shit show dystopia for awhile. It’s nothing new. But I believe we can expand our pockets. They can cover communities to borderless lands. Covid was not some great equalizer but showed the terrible disparities as the wealthy complained how their mansions felt like prisons as modern day slavery went about within prisons because we devalue human beings so much they feel as if all they can do is commit crimes and be killed by the state after being used as slave labour.
But there’s hope in prison abolishing. There’s transformative justice. Powerful ideas exist and one day I know utopia will come.
The climate crisis isn’t the oncoming dystopia. It’s another symptom of our current dystopia.
Our boring dystopia with no grand hero but a hopeful one filled with pockets of friends family community and love.
