Author’s Notes: This fanfiction was started in summer 2021 and finished in summer 2023, thanks to the BatBigBang. It started with the very simple question "What if Tim had to deal with his parents' mistakes, but make it Lovecraft?" Originally, I planned this fic to be 15.000 words at maximum, but it just kept growing and growing. I wanted to have more cross-references to works of H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King, but at some parts got cut in the planning stage. There were many ups and downs while writing the fic, since it is the first time I wrote something so large. Ultimately, it was a fun experience and I'm happy that I can add it to the BigBang Challenge!

Whizradio Artist’s Notes: This was so, so much fun to draw! I love spooky stories, and the fic makes an amazing job at creating a creepy atmosphere, not to mention it has pretty cool scenes; I struggled picking just two! Seriously spooky and amazing!

Chapter 9/12: Mere Exposure Effect

Kamala had never been on an overnight stakeout before. The thought exhilarated her.

With Oracle’s help, they had located a drop site—a trailer in an empty lot—in Burnside, where the villains were projected going to meet and set up camp in an abandoned motel across the street. While Duke positioned the tripod behind the webby mesh curtains, Kamala plugged the laptop into a power strip along with their phone chargers and opened up the video chat with Oracle.

The room was empty save for a disassembled nightstand in the corner and a coffee table pushed against the wall next to a rattling radiator. Kamala had learned the hard way that the bathroom in their room didn’t work, so if they needed to use one, they had to go all the way down the hall.

She rolled out a throw blanket onto the cold, dusty floor before tapping the keyboard. “Oracle? Can you hear me?”

“Loud and clear,” Oracle replied. “I’m looking at surveillance footage and it seems like the Rogues are busy with their own things for now. Nightwing and Robin are taking care of Mr. Freeze, the Riddler’s been stuck in traffic for the past twenty minutes, Bluebird’s dealing with the Mad Hatter, and Scarecrow hasn’t left his house yet.”

Kamala nodded and pulled a notepad out of her backpack. “So we should look out for Riddler and Scarecrow?”

“Most likely. Is everything set up?”

Kamala glanced up at Duke, who adjusted the lens one last time before giving a thumbs up. She relayed it to Oracle.

“I’m connecting to the camera’s live feed. That way you can focus on other stuff.” Oracle took a sip of her coffee. “What’s your case file named again?”

Duke answered, “HALO 2.”

She raised an eyebrow. “You named it after a video game?”

“It was a good idea in my head.”

a little glimpse (of these brightened halls)

There’s a million reasons that can explain why Duke’s found himself living in Bruce Wayne’s manor and there’s a million more that can explain why this fact scares the living shit out of him.

The people here are the people that Duke’s looked up to ever since he first heard the names Batman and Robin. And now- what? He’s living with them?

Or, maybe, it'd be more apt to say that he lives in their shadows.

And he’s not sure he’ll be able to work his way up to their sides.

That’s not to say he’s not going to try. If there’s one thing that Duke Thomas does, it’s not giving up. He’s going to give this chance his all.

He just needs to find out where he fits.

Chapter 8/12: Advice Corner (with Spider-Man, Nightwing, and Just About Everyone)

Duke had been so busy with the case, he’d completely forgotten about the upcoming Wayne Gala until Bruce mentioned it last night. And what made it a hundred times worse was it being Duke’s first gala, where he’d truly be out in public in front of the cameras for his debut as Bruce Wayne’s Newest Ward-slash-child.

He didn’t want to go it alone. The idea of it terrified him beyond words—the crowds, the cameras, the endless questions.

“You okay, Duke?” Bruce asked. “You’ve hardly touched your pancakes.”

Duke looked down at his partly nibbled breakfast.

“Sorry.” He put his fork down. “I’m just… nervous.”

“About the case?”

“That’s actually going pretty well. At least we didn’t hit any snags off the bat. That’s not what I’m thinking about.” He fiddled with the corner of the napkin. “It’s the gala.”

Bruce nodded. “First-time jitters, huh?”

“I guess so.”

“I get that,” he said. “I didn’t start going to galas until I was in high school myself, since there are always reporters and business talk. Alfred and some other company execs used to do it for me, so I know how nerve-wracking your first time can be.”

“What did you do?” Duke asked.

“I forced myself through it. But I’m not gonna make you do the same. The others have all found their own ways around it.”

Duke raised an eyebrow. “Like what?”

“Dick wore what he felt comfortable in. Jason had a plus one—that’s the only time I let Roy Harper into this place. Tim had a plus-three because his separating his friends was more work than it was worth.” Bruce cut into his pancakes. “Last year, Damian brought his pets. And the girls seem pretty happy with their phones and each other—I never make them talk to strangers if they don’t want to.”

This wasn’t at all what Duke expected from a formal gathering. Then again, he didn’t know what to expect at all.

“Does that mean I should bring someone?”

“You don’t have to,” Bruce said, “but you’re more than welcome.”

Duke was pretty sure he had undergone some form of Pavlovian conditioning, because upon hearing that, the first person he thought of was Kamala. Maybe it was because his brain was too fried to think of anyone else off the top of his head who’d be remotely interested in going. Maybe his brain wasn’t fried and was trying to tell him something, but the wires refused to connect.

“What if the press thinks we’re a couple?”

He bit his tongue. Why did he say that?

Bruce paused. His lip tugged upward.

“Duke, is there something you want to tell me?”

“N-no! That’s not what I meant.” Duke scratched the back of his neck. “I meant, like, hypothetically. You know, anyone I bring could be misconstrued as a date even though we’re not dating.”

“That’s what the PR team is for.” Bruce placed a hand on Duke’s shoulder. “It’ll all be on your terms.”

Duke swallowed and smiled. “Thanks, B.”
