Why Panchito is the last one in accepting that he lied?: good life vs broken dreams

I have been thinking about how Ducktales portrayed Adulthood, Expectations, and the way we measure our worthiness in the Three Caballeros episode. And this particular question about Panchito came up to me. I think I have the answer. I could be wrong, of course. This is just my opinion but let’s see.

Donald is the first one to accept that he lied, in part because he realized that lying wasn’t worth they getting eaten by a giant carnivorous flower; in part because Panchito and José though he didn't need love them anymore because he was successful, and in part because he knows his friends thinking he isn’t as cool as they thought and putting down all their dreams will worth it if it means protecting them, even if it means losing their love.

When Donald tells his truth. José is the first one to realize that Donald was the only one with the guts to break the façade even if it meant breaking their dreams and losing their love, José immediately sees he had fuck up, and worthiness changes its meaning with this. Donald is brave and honest in this, how could I be keeping this lie? He tells the truth immediately. Panchito doesn’t relent that easy and I kind of understand why. It’s because their circumstances are different, have they lied or not.

Why is this? Why Panchito is the most stubborn in the lie?

Let's start with a little insight on how okay were they with their lives and jobs from what we see in the episode.

Donald was actually okay with his life, he didn’t really measure his worthiness with what Scrooge could say since their fallout with the Spear of Selene, what Scrooge thought didn’t matter that much in those regards. Donald was used to being a failure in his eyes, he didn’t really care that much anymore since it has always been like that. But he stills has love, a lot of love, he could change of jobs every damn time but he still has support form his three kids, he was a failure in a way but incredibly successful in another, like Huey said. He has a broken dream but his family is 1000 times more important for him, and they’re fine and loved so it’s okay. But he does care about not being a failure in his friends’ eyes that think so highly of him, he still loves them and their expectations are important to him. And he knows he doesn’t meet them, especially right after he gets to know they were so “successful” and expected him to be even more than them. So, he lies to keep their love and impress them. He wants them to be as proud of him as he is of them. That’s why he lies.

José probably has some kind of good life too, after all, being an attendant gives you some actual ground to visit other places and do some interesting things. He was probably okay with his life too, in the comics he had always been kind of calm in those regards, lazy and mischievous. Life is just life. He has a broken dream but you know, meh, his life is actually okay right now so what does it matter? But at the moment that he knew he was going to meet Donald and Panchito? Oh Boy. NOPE. JUST NO. I can’t have that, I can’t let them see that. This so….not completely impressive life. So, he goes and dolls up the ups of his job, he takes one of his job’s perks and changes it to something better. He wants to be worthy of their friends and worthy of Donald’s morals. That’s why he is the first one to relent when Donald says the truth too.

But Panchito didn’t have any of that, he wasn’t okay with his life even before the meeting like Donald and he didn’t have perks to his job like José. He had to lie from the ground of his life. He had been in despair longer than those two, probably. Because for what we saw, Panchito was the only one between the three that actually tried to follow their old dream of being famous musicians. He has a dream, a dream that he followed but got broken in the way and now has a definitely not okay life. But then the opportunity presented of succeeding in that dream, and not alone, with his best friends. He truly believed they could succeed in that now that they all were “great adults”. His could have his dream and with his best friends in it again. Apart from the expectations from his friends that he wanted to meet, Panchito was in despair for not being the adult that he wanted to be more than anything, and he thought he had a chance again with his friends. He does feel betrayed, for their dreams. It’s hard to accept that it is a broken dream after all.

Panchito is scared, completely terrified of his life. When Donald went back home even if he lied, he would still have his family, his uncle was going to still be a billionaire, he would still have three sons that loved him so much and he loved them in return. When José would go back to his life even if he lied, he would go back to his okay job, it’s not a fantastic job but it’s good and stable and he has some freedom in it, he would still be fine with his life, he would still visiting places and meeting new people.

But Panchito? He would go back to an unstable life, singing in children’s parties, not knowing if he was going to be hired again, with his dreams broken and with the guilt of having been lying. And alone, without his friends. Of course, he is the last one to accept the lie. He is scared of going back to that life if they couldn’t do this again. He did need that tour to regain some sense of worth on himself.

He is the last one accepting they can’t really follow their old dream again with all those ups that their “successful” life could have given them. When Panchito refuses to believe that they can’t do that, what he really is refusing is having to come back to that life he has, that he probably despise. It must have taken a lot of courage to accept that he maybe was going to have to come back to that life again.

That’s why he is the last one to accept the truth. He is a scared adult, full of anxiety and broken dreams, and having to come back to that is understandable fear of his. None of this makes him lying okay, none of them lying was okay. But I do love lovably flawed characters. And Panchito is one of them. I love understanding why he acted like he acted. This is just an opinion, I could be wrong, of course.

Tagged by @sirgyrodegearloose I don't know 10 roleplayers to tag, and this is so long I'm not ask anyone to put in the time, hehe. BASICS. FULL NAME : Alexandra Dragora Calandrina NICKNAME : Lexi AGE : 20 BIRTHDAY : ETHNIC GROUP : Pekin duck NATIONALITY : Romanian LANGUAGE / S : English (that’s woefully all the mun is fluent in), French, Romanian SEXUAL ORIENTATION : Demi straight ROMANTIC ORIENTATION : Demi RELATIONSHIP STATUS : dating CLASS : witch. Upper middle in Transylvania but in Calisota, she does not have much, so she lives with her aunt. HOME TOWN / AREA : Marmatia (made up town), Transylvania CURRENT HOME : living with her aunt, Letitia Weyard PROFESSION : Student/witch PHYSICAL. HAIR : black, falls to the middle of her shoulder blades EYES : Blue sclera like any Pekin duck. Violet irises NOSE : Orange beak. It's slightly shorter than Donald Duck's FACE : Uh… round? Lexi is taller but not as muscular as he is so I guess she would be about twenty pounds too. BUILD : trim FEATURES : Big blue sclera, shiny long hair that usually has a small braid holding it away from her face (thank you, Goku-San for the idea), usualky smiling. ALLERGIES : some mushrooms and flowers like lilies make her sneeze. Some animal saliva makes her break out but she knows how to treat her reactions. USUAL HAIR STYLE : small braid holding hair away from her eyes. Usually down and loose but may be tied back in a pony tail or loose bun. Q1 : If you could write your character your way in their own movie , what would it be called , what style would it be filmed in , and what would it be about ? A1 : As much as I'd love to toss her into the DuckTales universe, I think most of the main cast would be wary of her. She does look a little like their adversary Magica De Spell, and magic can cause even more problems than it solves. She would be fun to pit against Gizmoduck, as she'd spend most of her time trying to fix his blunders and protect him from real threats while he is giving his speeches about justice. I think her current storyline (young woman leaves oppressive home environment in pursuit of self discovery and happiness and makes friends and enemies in her new foreign environment) is pretty much the type of movie I would put her in. A cross between the aesthetics and look of Tangled, with the adventures from Aladdin the series would be ideal for Lexi. Q2 : What would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : Lots of moody piano and strings, with deep drumming. Sort of like the Legend of Zelda or Eragon soundtrack, but with some light hearted, playful riffs like Tuomas Holopanien included in "Duel & Cloudscapes" in the album "Music Inspired by The Life and Times of Scrooge" Q3 : Why did you start writing this character ? A3 : I created her with the help of a friend on Skype back in 2013. Originally she was going to be an immediate relative of Magica DeSpell, but once I found out Magica has nieces and cousins like Minima and Matilda, I revamped Lexi. My friend Sasha came up with the nickname "Lexi" since it sounds playful and can be a pun on Hex. Q4 : What first attracted you to this character ? A4 : I love her personality. She's bubbly, optimist, and genuinely caring about both people and animals, and that is someone I would love to be friends with in real life. She's confident and motivated enough to teleport to her friends' side and fight their battles with them, but humble enough that she would never dream of seeking glory and fame. Q5 : Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. A5 : She cares too much and has too little self confidence. She lets her parents' opinions of her and other people weigh her down, and make her feel weak and useless. Good grief! Q6 : What do you have in common with your muse ? A6 : Empathy and low self esteem. She is basically a super powered, much more motivated and outgoing, smarter, more optimistic version of me. Her roller coaster emotions come from me and so do many of her personal interests. Like I said before, I'd love to be best friends with her in real life, but I think my habits, silence, and negative feelings would adversely affect her and she would have a hard time being around me. Q7 : How does your muse feel about you ? A7 : She would probably be torn between wanting to kick my keister and hug and comfort me most of the time. Q8 : What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ? A8 : Offline, Lexi has become friends with Darkwing Duck, Launchpad McQuack, Bushroot, @freddiebuckster 's character Harmonizer, my OC Agent Carol Torres, another friend's SHUSH Agent and pilot OC plus that pilot's Negaverse version, Negaduck, Magica and Poe De Spell, etc. I think one of my favorite odd interactions was with an older, frail Negaduck who no longer felt the need to murder or steal. He was just a cranky, achey old duck who had never known friendship or kindness. Lexi was very motherly with him, tending to his injuries, and providing him with clothes and food before taking him back to her friends. She has a similar motherly relationship with Bushroot, providing him with an enchanted charm that gives him back his original human appearance for a few hours at a time. Online, she is still developing her friendships and relationships. She has a very sweet relationship with her boyfriend, and his friends. She tries to prevent him from making mistakes and she tries to fix things when he does mess up, but she finds his cheerfulness and reckless bravery so endearing that she can't help wanting to be around him. He helps her recharge and relax when she's overwhelmed by stress from school studies or from empathizing too long. They care about and rejuvenate each other. Q9 : What gives you inspiration to write your muse ? A9 : Listening to movie and game soundtracks, and reading over past roleplays. I also have a list of roleplay ideas I'd like to do with her. She's one of my main muses so it is usually pretty easy to step into her character. Q10 : How long did this take you to complete ? A10 : About four hours (spread out over two days.)

The episode dealt in a subtle way with the actual ever-present fear of being an adult and the expectations from others that we have to carry, society expects everyone to be on equal ground to be a successful and settled down adult that can handle their responsibilities alone and not be a failure in the system, the fear of not being free anymore or the fear of not having the right to fuck up anymore, and the sadness and anxiety that comes when you can’t meet those expectations or can’t be the adult that you wanted to be, like woah, these guys are in their mid-thirties, scared and with minimum-wage jobs, that can’t barely handle their real lives but they still found the way to be happy around them, they just needed to be honest to those they love the most and accept life with their ups and downs. Talking About Getting RealTM AND HELLO? They only needed each other to be reminded that they are just normal adults even if they’re not successful and completely responsible and they sometimes fuck up in this uncertain life and that’s okay? and that they can actually still be fun-loving guys even if they’re adults now, like hello? great I gotta be honest when I saw the ep i didn’t like it but when i cooled down my head and saw it a second time to analyze and as An Adult In The MakingTM, It hit me hard the real fear these ppl were facing during the comedy and the lying, they loved each other and they only needed to be honest to understand that love isn’t conditioned by how successful you are. A+ ep, would watch it again.
