The Legacy Of MLK -- 55 Years Later
Sunday would have marked the 94th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, had he not been gunned down at the age of 39.  He was alive fewer years than he’s been dead, but his name and his work have not been forgotten.  Even young people who were not born until long after his murder know the legacy of Dr. King. Yes, his legacy lives on, and yet … Duante Wright, age 20 George Floyd, age 46 Breonna…

Screenshot from Facebook, because there is not enough talk about this on my dash.
Us northerners need to stop pretending that racism is a southern thing and start remembering that you are either helping or hurting and there is no in between.

Good.
True justice would be Duante Wright still being alive today. Duante was racially profiled using the pretextual “crime” of having an air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror.
I hope against hope that this verdict will make even one trigger happy cop stop and pause before racially profiling Black people and needlessly murdering another unarmed, innocent Black person.
Rest In Peace and Power, Duante Wright.

CW: violence:
Last night, Portland community members were organizing a march for Amir Locke, Daunte Wright, and Patrick Kimmons in a park, when a man came outside his home armed with intent to kill protesters. He shot a 60+ year old in the face. Point blank. He also shot several other people, 5 of whom were hospitalized, all of whom were in motorcade trying to protect the majority of protesters nearby. This was someone murdering and maiming Black Lives Matter protesters for daring to speak and march on public streets. The Portland protest community needs help: medical and funeral and legal expenses. Please help if you can.

Duante Wright, a 20 year old black man was shot to death by the police yesterday in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
He was pulled over for a traffic violation and shot by an officer who claims they thought they had pulled their taser. Duante was unarmed. He was a son, a boyfriend, a father.
Say his name.

Posting this and other articles because Duante Wright had a learning disability that, because he did not receive enough support for it, caused him to drop out of high school. He'd been working in retail and fast food ever since to support his child and GF, and he was planning to get his GED in the future.

I'm sorry for bringing this up, but I just saw that Duante Wright was stopped for having an air freshener on his rearview mirror? That's an actual traffic code violation?!?! An air freshener hanging from a rearview mirror, I read that right? He got pulled over for that?! That's a fucking staple in every car in my country, what the hell?! Jesus, I seriously cannot comprehend so many levels of absurdity....
Yes, that is what Duante Wright was stopped for. An air freshener. (I immediately removed my air fresheners when I first heard about this). In policing, it’s a pretextual form of racial profiling, where the police systematically target Black people, but use an obscure “law” to disguise their racism. This happened qwhite a lot, for example, in New York City under mayor Michael Bloomberg, when the police used various “legal” excuses to almost exclusively Stop-and-Frisk Black and Latinx people. But it doesn’t stop there. In Ybor City, Florida, there was an entire year where the police used bicycle “laws” to arrest people, and unsurprisingly, those who were arrested were exclusively Black cyclists. But when law enforcement wants to target Black people, it doesn’t even need to be obscure laws, right? Any law in America—from jay walking, to littering, to violating mask mandates, to protesting, to drug and marijuana use—is enforced far far more harshly against Black people.
And as the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict proved, the police rarely “fear for their lives” or “feel threatened” around violent, armed white men. A Black man would have never survived the encounter pictured below:

And if you can find me a real picture of a judge allowing someone Black—who was on trial for multiple murders—just casually hanging out behind the him, without guards or handcuffs, then I’ll delete my blog.

Anyway, yeah. The law is racist, the courts are racist, and our entire political system is racist.
SN: This kind of anti-Black racism isn’t just an “American” issue. It happens in Europe too.

If Kamala Harris truly has evolved on criminal justice, today would be a good day to make a bold statement condemning what happened to Daunte Wright instead of standing by the President’s pathetic statement on the issue.
