Why is it that every time i see something that makes me feel like the world is maybe worth existing in, i see two things that make me wonder what's the point?
Today I am sharing my review of the fabulous, and quite worrying, new climate change novel from Paul E. Hardisty, The Descent

Today on jenmedsbookreviews.com (the only blog I publish this review on) I am delighted to share my thoughts on The Descent by Paul E. Hardisty, a prequel and sequel to The Forcing, his brilliant climate change thriller. I loved The Forcing, and this has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2024 ever since it was announced last year. My thanks to publisher, Orenda Books, for the early copy…
there's a literal popularity contest going on on persona twitter right now where people are voting for the so-called biggest fan of every character and i'm not sure how anyone sees that as anything other than borderline dsytopian
Viganò called for an anti globalist alliance and international tribunals:
"In the face of this global coup d'état, it is necessary to form an international antiglobalist alliance which gathers all those who want to oppose the dictatorship who have no intention of becoming slaves to a faceless power, who are not willing to cancel their own identity, their own individuality, their own religious faith. If the attack is global, the defense must also be global.
I call upon rulers, politicians and religious leaders...inviting them to unite in an alliance that launches an antiglobalist manifesto, refuting point by point the errors and deviation of this dsytopian new world order and proposing concrete alternatives..
It will have to denounce the crimes of the elite, identify those responsible, denounce them to international tribunals, and limit their excessive power and harmful influence."
been slowly digging through the mountain of cut hl2 content and while i still need to read a more coherent summary of all the story elements that were cut, its interesting to me seeing comments that really just think the vibes of the old hl2 would have been more interesting or better than what we got... i mean, most comments i see are from 12 years ago. but, still. i think most of it is just from wanting more content and not exactly the depth as to what the old story implied and couldve been.
personally as interesting as some of it is, i look at its incredibly dark air today and im quite glad they didnt go for that. i think what i like about the hl2 we got versus the one that was cut, is that is feels... real. idk, looking at the dreary depressing beta maps, the cut npcs, designs, etc.... i guess it looks a little too on the nose in some ways, and even more so feels like such a strong exaggeration of what Could Be that it feels a bit detached from reality? not to say you cant have a setting like that, but i guess i never felt like hl1 lended itself to such an evolution in setting. i like the series because i feel like they stay quite grounded in what we know, and thats what made the events hit so much harder. if the designs had too much flare, of there was too much forced angst into the world, it wouldve felt like a bit too much, i think. like the manhack arcade is an example of something that while cool in concept, i really see no reason it needed to stay regardless of the slight change of vibes to the setting. or that human office map or whatever it was called. theyre things that really hammered in the dsytopian vibes a bit too hard, in a way that i dont think really added to the narrative as strongly as the more subtle hints in the final game
love exploring the cut stuff tho, the elements that were taken out and lore that was altered is always neat to see, mostly with characters who remained through the entire process.
Wow you’re actually canadian that’s crazy I’ve never seen or followed a real Canadian before. Were you upset when The Queen died? I cried but only bc I’m 🏴
LMFAO?? I love the phrasing of this. It's like I'm rare, endangered animal expect there are 30 million of us. I was actually excited when the queen died (no offense) because I've been waiting for it for years and it was to meme about. I didn't like how the country was reacting. Canceling funerals and appointments just because a lady died?? Even if she was the best and most important person in the world (she wasn't) it would still be unreasonable. Arresting people because they objected to having a new leader selected against their will?? It was very cult-like. It was incredibily dsytopian but everything nowadays is dystopian.
Watched a video on drive thrus and how they entice people into using them with the illusion of convenience and how much money companies pour into their drive thrus to boost more and more sales including tracking your license number and using ai and other dsytopian measures and for once I think my severe anxiety disorder gets a rare W because all my life I've avoided drive thrus due to how anxiety inducing they seem to be.
Like yeah. Im not doing that. I'd rather walk in and order with a person
The magical cats are coming! This October I’m collaborating with local art school Art Academica. We are running a competition for two groups of teenage artists. Their task: create a portrait of one of the characters in How to Survive Your Magical Family. While most of the characters in How to Survive Your Magical Family […]

Clare Rhoden has also written a dsytopian series…
I wrote a review of The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. Click the link above. Here’s an excerpt:
The concept of this novel was very interesting. It combines discussions of climate change effects, society and technology, and artificial intelligence. It reminded me of The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez, a sci-fi novel about extraterrestrial human societies and escaping the impacts of climate change ( y’all should absolutely read it). It also really reminded me of Westworld, the HBO show. I’ve read some others’ reviews where people said it reminded them of Black Mirror.
Be sure to check out the novel when its released on May 4!
