Your exasperated yell does nothing but fuel his laughter as he ducks away from the frame of your camera, hands shoved in his pockets. Beside you Mark has given up wrangling his bandmate and stands under the cherry blossoms as you take a few stills of him.

All of your group members and theirs are spread around on the mostly empty street behind the SBS Open Hall. Beautiful pale pink flowers shower you with petals at the slightest wind blowing over them.

"Honestly, would it kill you to stand straight for a little bit?" You huff, putting the lens protector back on.

"I already have my whole day being filmed to be put on YouTube. I think I'm fine having a few minutes to myself," he says wittyly, making you pout.

It's not like he's wrong. He's just so infuriatingly correct about everything, and if you weren't such a sucker for capturing these moments, you would have been equally resistant to having a camera shoved in your face all the time.

"Hey, _____? Can I borrow your camera for a bit?" Jaemin's calls make you march over to him, handing over your precious Nikon DSLR with utmost care. Yet, if anything, he's the only one that understands your awe at such a whimsical sight.

You fish your phone from your pocket next, sheepishly approaching Donghyuck as he stares at the bright blue sky dotted with clouds. You can't take your eyes away from his face—from the sunlight peppering his skin in a delicate glow and making it's already lovely colour appear otherworldly; right down to the moles you loved to map constellations on.

Catching yourself before you could be found staring, you clear your throat. "Haechannie, can I please just take one picture? Pretty please?"

His eyebrows quirk up in amusement but he holds out hand towards you. You blink at it owlishly. "Only if we take a selfie together."

You smirk, seizing the golden opportunity to tease. "Oh, you looove me."

Contrary to what you expected—maybe a snarky reply or equal amounts of nonsensical teasing being reciprocated—Donghyuck only pulls you closer by hooking an arm around your waist, plucking petals off your curled hair. "That I do."

Feeling the familiar heat creep up you neck and towards your cheeks, you lower you head. "You're awfully sentimental today."

He scoffs. "What? Like I need a specific day to declare my overflowing feelings for my girlfriend." He pauses for a moment, staring at your dolled up face, a finger coming to press lightly on the gem sticker shaped like a star at the corner of your left eye. "You look really pretty."

You're practically beaming, soaking in this soft side of him you that adore just as much as his dramatics. "Yeah? You look very pretty, too. Now, hold still pretty boy and let me take a picture?"

"I guess one is fine." Donghyuck didn't let it show but you know he is flustered. Avoiding eye contact with such vigor was a telltale sign. You chuckle, going on your tiptoes to press your lips against his cheek, right as you click the shutter button.

Before you could pull back to inspect the product, he grabs the back of your neck, placing his pillowy lips on top of yours and you positively melt against him.

For all it was worth, you ignore the hoots and whistles of your friends to cherish these stolen moments wedged between hectic schedules.

hi anon! :) thank you, it was a pretty good one this year. Probably the best one I've had in a while, all things considered. I spent most of the day just relaxing and hanging out with family, which is generally a rare treat for me.

This year my family didn't do very much for gifts, but I did give my brother my DSLR camera because I won't use it and I no longer need it for photography class since I'm now officially done with school. He got very excited and now he's sending me dozens of photos of his dogs :) it was nice bc normally that's the kind of gift I could never possibly afford to give but since I got the camera for free through a grant from my work (and since they didn't want the camera back after I finished the class), I was able to manage it this year.

I hope you had a good holiday as well! And a great New Year too!

Right, the second abandoned soma project i talked about. This one isn’t as abandoned, I worked on it today actually. Got some inspiration yesterday. But yeah. It’s Splatoon au fanart, so, like, if you don’t know splatoon all things might not make sense. And If you find this from knowing splatoon and not soma, things might also not make sense. 

The project is two pieces of fan art for Soma x Splatoon that I haven’t finished. oh yeah. See other soma splatoon stuff I have made here. (there is more unfinished artwork and refrence I made for the boys in more splatoon proportions, ha. I’ll show that off here too, at the end. I like it.)

they’re battle pose things for turf war. The fist one I even colored, and I mingt shade and texture it sometime, Idk. Feels like a lot. I’ve got the brushes for it now though. 

Agent 8 and agent 4 are there in plain clothes too. making their ink color black since the boys can’t change their ‘ink’ color. Lol. Yeah. this is basically ink=structure gel. they’re both goops. so yea. Also this is from before splatoon 3 was a thing and that’s why the agent’s inktanks are the splatoon 2 version. I copied poses from official artwork, because I could and the poses are awesome.

This is just a sketch, as you can see. (I’m actually working on line art/my cleaner sketch, but idk when that will be done if ever so you get this)  (also stole the poses here too, from more official splatoon artwork.)

they have custom weapons now! Based on cameras, since that is a splatoon-ish thing to base a weapon on that also has a Soma theme. When getting scanned, the first two times at least, they reference cameras, and Simon has a camera and a bit of a photography hobby, as seen by the pictures and camera in his apartment. I made the weapons in blender because I love 3d modeling sometimes and I love getting reference pictures of complicated objects wit hthe right perspective.

the polaroid slosher! You can see the inspiration better if you turn it around upside down. Should maybe chanfe that but it works for the pose of the sketch. It also has a inktank that is a previously used diver’s air tank (Simon 2′s in fact the top one of his back pack thing!) because I wanted to get references to diving equipment into the design, since that is also a soma/simon theme.

The DSLR brella! Based on a dslr camera, zoom lenses for a dslr camera, a camera tripod and the umbrella light things that photo studios have. Sadly no diving equipment in this one, tried to get it in but it just wouldn’t fit with the design. Brellas are pretty sleek, can’t fit that much on them, designwise. 

oh yeah. And the reference for the splatoon-style design of the boys. 

they can turn into little ink creatures, my god! they have four limbs/tentacles in that form, no more, because that is how many limbs they have in humanoid form. also icons. Because i love the style of the splatoon dialogue box icons. 

(Also you may have noticed the inconsistent prosthetic of Simon 3 in these designs. In the sketch thing, I just forgot about it honestly, only noticed it now. we all make mistages. Like that one. Mistackes. Mistakes. we all make ‘em.)

More Than Friends: part 1

I never understood why they asked. Why every time I was around her, the question "Are you two dating?" would pop up. No, I'd reply. We're just friends. And we are, just friends that is. But that doesn't stop the butterflies when she looks at me with a certain expression. It doesn't stops the butterflies when she entwines our fingers at a party. And it certainly doesn't stop the butterflies when we're alone in her room, her arms around me and her head on my chest. The butterflies don't stop, I've tried. 

I was twenty seven when we met. She was twenty six. I was working a full time job as a social media executive in the city, for a start up company selling vintage clothing. You see, I'm what you would call a creative. I love to make things. Photography, videography, graphics, that kind of thing. I used to be a painter as a kid, but I grew out of that when I discovered technology. And that's my passion, making visual things that others can enjoy. I write scripts too, though the majority of them need filing under BIN. Anyway, i'm going on a tangent. I was testing out my new camera, a Canon EOS 750D DSLR, in the reception of the local TV studio when a girl stopped me to ask for directions to the closest cafe with good coffee.

'Walk out of the car park, turn right at the exit, follow the street until you reach the library and it's next door. If you reach Tesco, you've gone too far', I say.

She thanks me, and heads on her way. I never think another second of it, this happens often.

Two nights later, it's a Friday night and I'm heading to a party being hosted by a girl I've spoken all but two words to, but she's a friend of the girl I'm dating so I agree to attend. We arrive around 9pm and I'm dragged straight into the garden where I see a group of around 8 girls sat in a circle on the grass. Nicole, the girl I'm seeing, says her hello's and introduces me to her friends. 

'This is Sheree' she says to everyone, 'The girl I was telling you about'. 

I smirk at that. A huge, shit eating grin actually and she notices, rolling her eyes at me. She asks if I'd like a drink, to which I say yes, but I'll get them, and she points me in the direction of the kitchen. I leave her with her friends and head in the direction she gave, finding myself in an american styled kitchen area. Bottles everywhere. It was like a scene from Skins. I grab two bottles of Budweiser, and search for a bottle opener. 'There MUST be one around here somewhere', I think to myself.

'Here' I hear from my left, 'You might need this'.

Looking over, I see a girl with short blonde hair waving a bottle opener at me. I take it, thanking her for her help and opening the bottles in my hand.

'So, this might sound weird...' she starts. I raise my eyebrows at her, causing her to grin at me, 'but aren't you the girl from the studio a few days ago?' 

For the first time, I properly look at her. She was right. She was the girl I gave the directions to.

'Uh, coffee girl, right?' I ask. She grins again.

'That's me, though I hope the nickname doesn't stick...' There's an awkward silence before she continues, 'I'm Florence'

I nod in response, "Sheree'

'Nice to officially meet you. Your directions are shit, by the way. I hit Tesco' 

'Oh, fuck. Sucks to be you, I guess' 

I shrug at her. Florence again grins at me. She's making a habit out of that. I like it.

'So, what brings you to these neck of the woods? No offence, but you don't sound like you're from around here' 

'A project' She pauses, choosing her words carefully, 'I'm an actor"

'Ah, a stripper' I tease.

'Fuck off' She laughs, which was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard, 'Ive been doing voice acting at the studio I saw you at...'

I'm impressed. To me there is nothing more attractive than a girl with a talent. I look at her closely, taking in every detail of her face, trying to work out if I would know her, but nothing came to mind.

'Would I know anything you've been in?' I ask her curiously. 

'Maybe, maybe not' She shrugs at me, 'I-'

Just then, I felt two arms wrap around my waist and a chin rest on my shoulder. Nicole. Florences smile faulted slightly, before she turned her attention to the new arrival.

'Hi! You must be Sheree's... girl...?... friend...?' she paused between each word, unsure of how to go about the situation. We both knew she was flirting with me before, and now the situation had turned awkward. Not my girlfriend. Not my girlfriend. Not. My. Girlfriend.

'We're not quite at that stage yet, but maybe someday.' Nicole replies, before taking her drink from my hand, 'Thanks, kid' she kisses my cheek before skipping back outside to her friends. You're welcome, kid.

Florence furrowed her brows as we watched her leave. When she was out of sight, I turned again and caught Florence looking at me curiously. Not for the first time tonight either.

'She seems...'

'A lot' I interrupt.

'Nice' she continues.

I grin at her, taking a sip of my drink. She giggles, and I swear my heart nearly exploded. I'd found my new favourite sound.

sakuatsu | Speed Dating

Kiyoomi isn't really sure what he's doing here aside from the fact that Motoya put him up to it. "You need to at least try to put yourself out there, Kiyoomi," his cousin pleaded. The buzzer sounds again, signalling the time to switch tables.

He sighs. So far, he hasn't met anyone even mildly intriguing. A lot of them, quite frankly, just didn't make the bill.

Some are too overly cheerful for him, full of boundless energy Kiyoomi couldn't keep up with. He felt his social battery going down by half in the five minutes they talked.

Others were decent but after a few pressing questions from Kiyoomi about their hygiene, he starts crossing them out from his mental list of potential partners.

That one Iizuna guy almost made the bill. He mentioned something about a lint roller and he saw him use Kiyoomi's favorite brand of sanitizer. The only problem was that he had been quite too sensitive for Kiyoomi's liking.

Kiyoomi is a blunt guy. If he's going to date anyone, it should be someone who can handle his sharp tongue.

His last pair for the night is someone called Wakatoshi. Kiyoomi had seen him earlier in the restroom folding his napkin wet side in so he has high hopes.

Wakatoshi turns out to be everything Kiyoomi is looking for. He's handsome, has good hygiene and is an avid lover of volleyball like himself. He's definitely a check on Kiyoomi's books.

They gorge themselves in conversation the entire five minutes before the buzzer rings for one last time.

The second phase of the event gives a chance to those who've had a spark of mutual interest to continue their conversation. People start pairing up. Kiyoomi gets up from his table in hopes to find Wakatoshi. He believes they've had some sort of mutual connection.

He looks around. Most people are already paired up and engaged in conversation. He sees Iizuna laughing at something his date said, too busy to even notice Kiyoomi pass by. Even the extroverted balls of sunshine each found themselves a pair.

Kiyoomi's stomach drops when finally spots Wakatoshi. He's already seated at one of the tables talking to a red-haired guy. And he's laughing. Kiyoomi didn't expect that. His first impression on Wakatoshi is that he's a serious type of guy.

He sighs. When he came into this speed dating event, he didn't really have high hopes of himself actually getting a match but he also didn't expect to he severely disappointed.

He makes his way to the bar, where stragglers (unmatched people like himself— the reject pile) gathered to drink their misery away.

He orders a drink and takes a seat on one of the stools. At least now he can go home early and watch that docu-series he's been wanting to catch up on, Kiyoomi thinks. Motoya will probably think he didn't try hard enough and he'd be wrong.

He lets out another sigh before his drink comes. He chugs it down halfway, the alcohol burning down his throat and warming his insides.

"Tough night?" Someone beside him says.

Kiyoomi turn to see a blonde man smirking up at him. He huffs. "If you're here then it's not wrong to assume you're in the same boat as me."

The stranger snorts. "Ya think I'd be like ya losers who can't get a date? Please." He turns to fully face Kiyoomi and points to the DSLR camera hanging around his neck. "The only reason people aren't swarming to me right now is because I'm the official photographer of this event."

Kiyoomi rolls his eyes. "If you were one of the participants tonight, I definitely won't pick you to be my date for the night."

"That's fine. I heard how dry yer conversations can be. No wonder that big guy chose the redhead instead of ya. I definitely won't pick ya too."

"Good," Kiyoomi says, hoping to end the conversation then and there.

"Good," the stranger huffs back.

Kiyoomi thinks that's it. He chugs down the second half of his drink, wanting nothing more than to get out of this place, when the stranger speaks up again.

"I just don't understand why ya had to ask their cleaning routine on the first date?"

Kiyoomi glares at the man beside him in offense. "It's to ascertain if their level of cleanliness matches my standards."

"No wonder yer single."

"Why are you even talking to me? Don't you have an event to take pictures of?"

"I'm on break," he shrugs.

"That doesn't answer my first question," Kiyoomi points out.

The stranger leans closer towards Kiyoomi's space. "I've had my eyes on ya for a while. Yer unfairly pretty. Definitely my type."

"Too bad you're not mine."

"I bet ya I can change that by the end of the night."

"Don't get too cocky. I'm told I'm impossible to please."

The man smirks smugly. He gives Kiyoomi a once over, sending shivers into Kiyoomi's spine. He leans forward up to Kiyoomi's ears and whispers, "I seriously doubt that."

Looks like Kiyoomi has finally met his match.

What sort of jobs would the triplets and friends have at the resort if they're asked to help out? Or a fun hc about each that hasn't been mentioned yet?

OOOOHHH YAAASSSS! @cheesy-cryptid and I actually had some fun little headcanons about their work in the resort! I'm gonna add in some fun little tidbits about their life in the Madrigal Resort while we're at it!

Angelina is our lovely Social Media Manager slash Influencer! She's a model for different clothing brands that will request a collaboration with her and mostly does advertisements for summer wear! She uses her popularity as a means to help advertise the Madrigal Resort and sometimes would even rope her family into her social media shenanigans. Ignacio is also fairly popular with Angelina's fans, and everyone wants to have a peak of mommy Evalina! But what mildly irks her is how Javier is always the one who would gain the most traction in her posts, especially on Tiktok. Javi doesn't like to be seen on camera, so it's been a running gag in her account to spot Javier whenever a blurb of him in the background could be seen (some would even go as far as to compile clips of blurred stolen videos of Javi and some audio recordings of his voice from Angi's many many videos). Angelina uses this to her advantage and sometimes ropes Javier into her schemes for the clout. But she makes sure to cut any on-cam face reveals of Javier.

Ignacio is our Rockin' Fiery Musician and Surf Teacher! Although he does go with Angelina for photoshoots on occasion (and is quite popular on social media as well), he's actually the star of the Madrigal Resort dinner as the lead singer and guitarist of the night! He also likes to do a little bit of fire shows with his gift when he sings. It's a headcanon of mine that he does fire breath performances for the thrill as well, but since it's a fire hazard, it's rare for him to do spitfire shows on evenings. During the day, he helps out with the kids who wants to learn how to surf. He also accompanies willing adults as well! You can say that he's also a volunteer life saver, but only if the lifeguards on the resort are too shorthanded for the amount of rifts in the beach. Angelina would sometimes film Ignacio with his shirt off for thirst trap videos

Javier is our All Rounder Manager! It's not really a shock on how Javier is a jack-of-all trades. The only difference is he's a master of all. He can definitely make advertisements and catch banger shots of the resort with his trusty drone and DSLR camera which is the main reason why the marketing for the Madrigal Resort is sky-high. He manages the website and bookings sometimes, and he schedules Ignacio's performances during the night. He can be an event coordinator and floor director, but he cannot, for the life of him, become the center of attention. He says it's too much of a drag. Contrary to what you may think, Javier knows all of the up-to-date trends and would sometimes give tips to Angelina on what content she should do next. He is hyperaware of his own popularity as the mystery triplet of the Madrigals, so he cashes in on that as well. But you can say that his biggest responsibility is to keep Angelina and Ignacio out of trouble (and possibly not to ignite a fire in the resort). His work doubled when Auri and Diego came into the picture, but he's thankful that Diego has enough sense in him to get the others out of trouble too. He's a big sweetheart, but he tends not to show it as much.

Bonus!

Everyone in the Madrigal Family is, one way or another, involved with the Madrigal resort!

Julieta's side of the family deals with room management, hospitality, and the resort's menus! Julieta and Agustin are head and sous chefs respectively, Isabela is front of the house and head steward, Luisa does front of the house too, but is in charge of the heavy lifting, and Mirabel is the one who does official Madrigal Resort tours (with a musical twist).

Pepa's side of the family is in charge of event planning and coordination, especially for bigger events like weddings, anniversaries, debuts, quinceanreas, and big celebrations! Pepa and Felix are head event coordinators, Dolores deals with the networking (wardrobe, make-up, stage decorators, you name it), Camilo is head hospitality and host for events, and little Antonio is still too young to really help out, but he often lets his animal friends to tricks for guests!

Bruno's side of the family deals more with internal management and advertisement! Evalina goes to board meetings in Alma's steed with Bruno. Sometimes, people tend to forget that Bruno is actually one of the owners of the resort since he mostly wears cargo shorts, a jacket with coconut stains, mismatched slippers, and overall just has an aloof look compared to his gorgeous wife.

12/02/2023-Lakeside, Toyd Down and home

I met my sister’s lovely new puppy Buddy for the first time when they came round this morning which was a great time, and we took him on a quick walk to Lakeside which was fun. There at the shore of beach lake I enjoyed intimate views of Mallard the second picture I took today in this photoset showing male and female, Greylag as shown in the fourth picture in this photoset and Canada Geese, Coot as shown in the third picture in this photoset and Moorhen and bathing Feral Pigeon which was great. I think I really appreciated how close the regular waterbirds here came today as I had my long distance specialist bridge camera and DSLR with just my regular lens and not my big lens this time and they were close enough for most of the photos to be with the latter. It was also nice to see Black-headed Gull in a tree and hear Great Tit with House Sparrow seen and heard by the entrance too. When back I got excellent views of the Dunnock in the vegetation in the front garden as shown in the fifth picture in this photoset seeing it on our way out to Toyd Down this afternoon too, golden moments. I got great views of Goldfinches in the tree out the front on the way out for the walk too, with Woodpigeon and Starlings and their fluent tones seen and heard well at home today. On the way out this afternoon I was delighted to see a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the green out the front with Black-headed Gulls, a key bird in this area at this time of year I recall seeing them on the green around when we first moved here and it was eight years yesterday since we officially first got this house so this was nice. I enjoyed seeing a spider maybe a Noble False widow in the hallway this evening.

It was great to see ever more forsythia and red deadnettle adorning the area across the road, with rose hips (as well as the shriveled ones in the garden) and fluffy fleabane seed heads, dock and also nice leaves seen at Lakeside with daisies seen on the green out the front. In the back garden I enjoyed seeing the viburnum and on the balcony I liked seeing more orange flowers out with the existing one and a lovely little blue flower. There were nice moody views across the landscape at Lakeside, I took the first picture in this photoset showing this. 

At Toyd Down this afternoon we wanted to look for Fieldfares and some farmland birds having seen them there last January and it was another brilliant afternoon of birdwatching. We saw one of the desired farmland birds as soon as we arrived, the charming Yellowhammer seeing a decent number of these precious birds on the walk, one I am fond of and was looking forward to trying to see this year. I took the seventh picture in this photoset of one. On the walk we also caught sight of Red-legged Partridges shuffling around by a hedge at the edge of a field at a fair distance, birds I always like seeing. Then we were delighted to briefly see two Grey Partridges flying and settling then see two of these quintessential British countryside birds in a field, getting amazing views of them, seeing their rustic plumage and sumptuous orange on the head. I know I’ve never year ticked both partridge species in the same day before and am not sure I’ve ever seen them in the same day before. This felt great and it’s an honour to get Grey Partridge seen for another year I do love them. Just before and fantastically whilst looking at the two Grey Partridges in a field we saw Fieldfares, it was a pleasure to see these splendid thrushes picking around on the ground, such feel good views of half a dozen or so of them. I had wondered if this might be one we had to wait a bit to see this year so to get them seen in 2023 felt great. It’s the same three year ticks I got on our trip to Toyd Down last January, with the addition of Grey Partridge albeit the Fieldfares last year we first saw from the car nearby before we got to Toyd Down and then saw more there. It was our third visit to Toyd Down after a Great Bustard brought us here in 2020 for the first time in the February and it’s fast becoming a really useful site for seeing birds especially farmland ones for us and it’s a place I really enjoy going. On a special afternoon the four year ticks my most in a day since Slimbridge on 6th January takes my year list to 137 an unbelievable figure for so soon into a year for me really.

It was also smashing to see a ringtail Hen Harrier fly through! What a striking bird to see. Extraordinarily having never seen them more than once in a year that’s two Sundays running we’ve seen one, after the sighting at Pig Bush in the New Forest November it’s been my best ever autumn and winter for these magnificent birds. Sensationally we called into the place in the New Forest we saw them last week on the way back today to see if my Mum’s partner could see one as he didn’t last week and we saw at least one stunning male, my Mum seemed to see a second as well. It was euphoric to watch this master of a bird parade through the valley in a ghostly way. At Toyd Down I also saw Buzzard flying and sat in a field, Red Kite and Rook nicely today and heard Skylark I believe. In the world of mammals I saw my first Hares of the year with some smashing views of some including one seen itching, these parts are so good for them and I always enjoy seeing them to keep my mammal year list flowing nicely. There was also a lovely group of Roe Deers in a field we saw.

Old man’s bird a bit shown in the tenth and final picture I took today in this photoset adorned the laney track with shadows of hogweed and other of last year’s flowers making great sights here today. It was lovely to take in the vast typically English beautiful rolling landscape with nice lines of trees, seeing up to a regular place we go especially in spring and summer Martin Down I believe and noticing a clump of trees here are ones we see in the landscape from Martin Down which is always fascinating, and it was great to appreciate how wild and good for nature this place is. I took the sixth, eighth and ninth pictures in this photoset of views here today. What a place.

On the way here and on the way back it was wonderful to see golden daffodils out and snowdrops at the road side the closer we got to Toyd Down the higher the concentration of snowdrops and it was a delight to witness I love when these two come out in late winter/early spring. Gorse was nice to see too. On the way seeing possibly Cormorant and Grey Heron, Little Egret at Broadlands and Fallow Deers when passing the New Forest including a white one was nice. On the way back New Forest Pony and Raven were highlights seen really nicely. I appreciated the green beacons of pines among the bare trees of the landscape too. Another brilliant weekend, I hope you’ve all had a good one.

Week 01

Summary of "Afghan Girl" photo

In 1984 American photographer Steve McCurry was sent to Afghanistan to study and photograph the refugees living in Pakistan. After venturing into a makeshift schoolhouse he spots a girl named Sharbat Gula, noticing her interesting eye colour. The final photo itself defies many of the rules Sharbat lives her life by. The removal of her Berka, the eye contact she makes and the act of taking the photo of her breach many of the restrictions that would normally be forbidden. The choice of pose is particularly interesting as McCurry made a conscious effort to frame this photo as a call back to 80's glamour photography. It’s a stark contrast to the “reality” of the story, and how the lives of refugees are in no way glamorous.

I think the act of the photography and the way McCurry approached the situation was beyond poor. Despite his work being centered around gathering photos for a particular story, he seemed to show no interest in who the "Afghan Girl" was, or what her boundaries might've been. The same goes for the reshoot done years later where once again, her beliefs were trampled on and ignored. Sharbat was eventually found by the Pakistani government, who removed her from what was the only home she had ever known. She later speaks on how that without that photo taken in 1984, she would still be living in Pakistan.

The whole story reeks of the abuse of American power. These people assumed they could just waltz into wherever they want and stomp all over the lives of others. The Original National Geographic article is a gross misrepresentation of reality, telling a twisted and untrue versin of a story they practically forced her into. Sharbat's eyes did not reflect the fear of war, but the fear of a man destroying her boundaries and photographing her. No money was given to her, yet McCurry and National geographic made tons of it. This photograph practically gave McCurry his entire career and status as a historical and revered photographer. While the photograph did help raise millions of dollars and bring awareness to the conflict, It doesn’t excuse the the awful behaviour and twisting of reality seen in the making and final product of this National Geographic article. Regardless of how good the photograph is, it’s stained by the troubled reality of it’s creation.

Artist Exploration 1 - 3

Vivian Maier

Vivian Maier is an American photographer whose work dates back to around the 50’s. What makes Vivian’s story so interesting is her discovery. Maier’s photography wasn’t known of until 2007, when 100,000 negatives were stumbled upon. Vivian’s style is especially intriguing to me and very ahead of it’s time. While her work mostly consisted of street photography, the way she approached the genre was wholly unique. She often used reflections in her work. Glass, puddles and mirrors are used as tools in her compositions. Reflecting and refracting her subjects gives her photograph a very abstract and almost surreal feeling. The most striking of her work has to be the numerous self portraits. Often taken in a city or street environment, these portraits utilise her knack for reflections, mirroring herself holding the camera. At times she takes a very simple and basic approach by framing herself in a glass window, or using a more strangely shaped object in order to capture herself. It’s a quite odd and somewhat surreal looking at these images of hers as this is something that many people these days are so accustomed to. The act of a mirror selfie has become so ingrained into our culture that it’s practically inescapable. Her photography reminds me of myself, as I too like to snap a photo of my reflection while i’m out with my DSLR. Despite their simplicity, her portraits remain to be incredibly dynamic and truly gorgeous to look at.

Andy Warhol

While Andy Warhol is often known and respected for his contributions and genre defining work within the world of “Pop Art”, Warhol also dipped his toes into photography. His exploration of self portraiture is particularly interesting as he restricted himself to shooting on a Polaroid camera. His final products all came out on small self developed film giving them a very dishevelled and almost amateur feel, despite them being taken by one of art’s most prolific figures. His portraits often deal in his fear and frustrations with aging. He expressed these anxieties through the use of props and costuming, often dressing in drag or accessorising himself with various strange and striking objects. His work very much exudes this feeling surrealism and self expression, feeling more like a collection of strange found images that you weren’t meant to see. they’re odd, but delightful in their own way.

Francesca Woodman

Francesca Woodman is an American photographer from the 1970’s. Her work is all in black and white and has a sense of uncertainty to her photography. A lot of her work focuses on the body, featuring a heavy amount of nudity and contorted costuming. She’s also very well known for her self portraiture. Often putting herself into very obtuse poses, Woodman frames herself in very creative ways, taking use of slow shutter speeds to capture blur, and low lighting to give these environments a sense of terror. Woodman’s photography comes across a shade darker than the two artists listed above. From the lighting to locations and poses, Francesca crafts some very twisted and almost unsettling self portraits. Her story adds another layer of disturbance to her work, as Francesca Woodman would take her life at the age of 22. It’s a tragic story, but the art she left behind tells us of the brilliant mind she was.

Roll of 36 - Self Portraits

For week 01 i had a few things in mind that I wanted to explore: Reflection, lighting, location, distance and composition. My 3 main ideas are somewhat spotty, but I for the most part I operated under these few section: Mirror photography in low light conditions, Simple background headshots in medium lighting, and brightly lit outdoor photography. I haven’t done self portraits since NCEA level 2 so it was a bit strange coming back to it. I remember how long it took me to get used to framing and angling the camera just the right way to fit myself in the shot incely. It was a surprise to me how quickly I picked it back up again, and how much fun i ended up having. Especially when shooting outside, i felt like i had so many new ideas each time I ran back to the camera to check how the last came out. I think for these 36 shots I played it a little safe, but that comes naturally from not really exercising this part of my photography skillset for a while. I wanted to play around with distance, shooting from decently close to far away. It may be debatable whether the wider shots really are portraits, but I would like to consider them as such since they are very reliant on me being the subject. A regular photo of my garden wouldnt be as interesting without myself pottering around in frame. I think this shoot was very successful, and I’m happy with how everything turned out.
