So I finally found a way to watch tristamp in English dub (I only ever watched the series in Japanese). I haven’t done any deeper thoughts and analysis, and I’m only halfway through the series but here’s my impression so far:
- I love English dub Vash, especially his gibberish noises, such a chaotic dumbass (affectionate), and although some of his jokes and mannerism didn’t translate as well as I hoped, they did a very good job. They deserved two dozen donuts. (although if you hold me at gunpoint and ask me to choose English or Japanese Vash I will choose the Japanese version with a thin margin because I have personal bias towards Matsuoka Yoshitsugu [he’s from where I live lol, and I’m a big fan])
- I’m also in love with how they play Legato and Roberto, especially Legato, I was surprised by the lack of the feeling out of place (Is that the right word? sorry my brain suddenly stopped working in English) that you usually have when you hear a show dubbed in another language you’re not used to hearing. So smooth. And they nailed the drunkle speech with Roberto.
- I honestly was disappointed with the lack of accent in Wolfwood’s speech (maybe I just didn’t hear it correctly? Idk) because he speaks in heavy Kansai dialect in Japanese, even when he was a child (also casting Hosoya Yoshimasa really emphasized the accent). A huge missed opportunity on the English dub, in my opinion. I was expecting Wolfwood with a heavy Southern accent or something. And on that note they also missed the chance to add some dialect for the worm hunters on episode 4.
- English dub Meryl feels mature and a lot more pulled together to me compared to the Japanese version, which sounds very pristine and innocent until she starts learning about the world. It makes her a little… out of place for me who’s used to Meryl speaking in a very polite formal Japanese to everyone (even when she’s yelling in rage or when she’s cursing people). I think it suits Meryl from ‘98 anime more than tristamp Meryl. Probably because you can’t really translate her distinct way of speaking accurately, it’s not anyone’s fault, just a matter of different language. But I guess I like the Japanese version better for Meryl. I just love the way she speaks, shame there’s no English equivalent to her speech style.
- I don’t like English dub Nai. I’m 100% going with the Japanese version in this. Not the performance, though, I know translations are really hard and I do think the English VA did a great job, but as someone who’s used to how Nai speak in Japanese, the dub just… didn’t feel right. In Japanese Nai speaks in a relatively rougher manner compared to Vash (in how he chooses his words, also the subtle but different way he talks to humans and to Vash) and it didn’t show as much in the English dub. And his pretentious speech that sounds like some people from the church near my house doesn’t get carried to the English dub, I guess. In English he just sounds like a scary villain to me, while in Japanese I can feel his emotions and (warped) love towards Vash just from his words. I saw someone pointing out that Nai refers to the dependent plants with feminine pronouns, and it’s even more prominent and emphasized in the Japanese version. They’re not wrong. Maybe in English it can come across as a bit misogynistic(?), I don’t know, but I like how he does this in Japanese, because to me it feels like he’s always trying to refer to them as “persons” and not “things”, although his treatment towards them is contradictory.
This ended up longer than I expected but overall I enjoyed the English dub and I love analyzing different languages. I wanna know how it feels for people who know absolutely zero Japanese watching the series in English dub and in Japanese with English subtitles. I know that there were differences in the subtitles and the dub but for me I can’t compare English sub and dub because I’d just go with my Japanese interpretation if I watch the subbed version (or I’d rather just ditch the subtitle altogether because sometimes it’s making my brain confused when I speak both languages).
Also to people who write Trigun fanfics in English, where do you base the character speech from? I don’t know how to translate Japanese dialects, so Wolfwood, for example, is very difficult for me to write in English.

I now have a plotbunny running around my brain about a pre-Vol 1 Jaune slowly making his way to Vale and finding a lost little girl who latches onto him and begs him to take her with him.
He thinks he reminds her of her uncle, or something.
She's sharp tongued, but always apologizes. She keeps thanking him, but always gets into trouble. She's woefully out of date on technology, but knows classic fairy tales.
She DOES know about Xray and Valve, but only second hand. Weird.
And one time, he asked her to pass him the soup from across the campfire and she dropped the whole pot and spent the whole night crying and apologizing while clinging to him.
He thinks she needs more help than he can provide, but theyre almost there. Almost to Vale. He can find a way to contact her family. He can help her more when he gets there.
He didn't expect her to follow him when he went to meet that contact outside of Vale to get those papers.
He didn't expect it all to turn so fast.
He also didn't expect a bird to atually turn into a Hunter, despite her stories, and now he's second guessing a lot of things.
But when "oh, you're the Drunkle" asks what they're doing out in the Vale woodlands, she speaks before he can.
"We're off to see the Wizard of Oz, of course. I'm the Girl who Fell Through the World, and this is the Rusted Knight"
What.
Next thing he knows, he's in the office of Headmaster Ozpin, sheepishly explaining himself.
She looks Ozpin and asks him "are you really a Compulsive Liar with Trust Issues, a crazy Ex, and a really bad hand in life?" And suddenly Ozpin is choking on coffee.
"Why told you that?" "Jaune did."
HE MOST CERTAINLY HAD NOT.
"Not yet, no"
WHAT DID THAT MEAN?!?!?!
But Ozpin is looking at him speculativly, and She's not meeting his eyes, but reaching into her bag and pulling out..... a cabbage?
But the cabbage unfolds, and inside is..... a small bunny with nubs on its head?
It opens its adorable little eyes, sees him, and promptly launches itself at his face with a desperation he'd only seen in farm dogs that had been left alone for a weekend.
And as he catches JUNIPER something clicks.
Many things are lost, and others are gained.
He looks down at ALYX, and gently wipes her tears, shush-ing her apologies, and giving her a hug.
Jaune looks the Headmaster in the eye and says to him: "Tell me Oz, what's your least favorite fairy tale?"
"Oh, and you wanna mess with your Ex-Wife's plans ?"
This is a FANTASTIC fucking plot bunny, incidentally, featuring a literal plot bunny
Please please please expand on this I need more lore I need to know more

I had a glorious dream, in the world of Percy Jackson, and despite noone asking or caring, I feel the need to share it.
Meet Akira. Akira is Japanese-American demigod, son of Momos, and resident chaos magnet. Also, probably has broken a law or two in the past week.
His godly parent was surprisingly present thorough his childhood, because one: noone really cares what Momos does. Two: He goes between mortals quite often anyways. Three: They can't tell him what to do anyways. So he has a whole two parents, but Momos acts more like a cool drunkle, so he's not much help in behaving him. Alas it mostly falls on his mom.
His godly ability is basically Vicious mockery from D&D, and noone is even sure if it's an actual power, or he's just that good. His other skill, is an ability that allows him to skew with other people's powers, tho he can't exactly control it.
The second floozey is Lucretius, alias Luca, alias Lucy if you are feeling bold, or if you are a certain aforementioned child of Momos. "Son of Juno", tho technically he is neither a demigod, nor her actual child. He was a statue (not sure if he was turned into one by Zeus in ancient times, or was just one originally) that got given life by the fertility goddess with powers similar to what I think her demigod children can have.
Technically speaking he is a monster, with grey blood, and immune to regular weapons, but since Juno claimed him, noone dares defy her, even if they don't really like her. He has a peacock simbol over his SPQR tattoo, and three lines. He acts similarly to satyrs, and his job is to get Roman demigods safely to Camp Jupiter. But for gods' sake, this kid is testing his patience.
He has the ability to bond things (like the bond of marriage, yknow). For example, he can slow down an enemy by binding them to something heavy, or even for them to stay in a certain radius, as well as binding people together (you can imagine how well that meshes with Akira's powers). He can commit to an action, which makes him immune to most forms of enchantment, and charm speak, and can stare witheringly (how much of it is Juno's influence is unclear). As the Sky Goddess' "descendant", he should probably be able to somewhat control weather if Jupiter wasn't a petty bitch. Alas, he would rather not try, he's already so done with dear old mom.
Basically the entire dream was mission "Get Akira to Camp Jupiter without getting myself, or him killed", which proves to be quite a challenge, since while his blood makes monsters drawn to him, his stellar personality attracts all other types of troubles. Through their travels, they encounter Baba Yaga, who moved to America for some good for saken reason, a kid with a long nose, and his head on backwards, who claimed to be born form a white horse, and was looking for someone to turn his head around, a golden cat, with a key in her neck, but with sticky fur... Also, that was a selkie that wanted to snatch them into the ocean, and the solution was throwing molotov at it. From the less magical beings, they got into conflict with a local gang, security officers, and the government (kind of). Luca misses the days his biggest worry was which pigeon shits on him next.
By the end they got into New Rome, looking like actual shit, Akira gets immediately claimedby his father Momos, and Luca is like "Of course". And then I woke up.

Who are your least favorite rwby characters?
My least favorite?
Looking back on it, I wouldn't say there are any truly awful characters. Like, they all play their roles really well, and the ones who are only truly awful are the ones who don't even have a name (for example, that racist lady at the end of the Atlas Arc, like it feels kind of forced in, to be honest).
But if I had to make a list in no particular order? Well...
Tumblr media
Qrow Branwen
Yeah, I get it. Everybody loves Drunkle Qrow. At least I did at first. Edgy, smart mouth, bad influence Qrow was fun to watch. Especially his slap fight against Winter in his introduction. However, as time went on, we got to see his darker side, and it's very reminiscent of Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty. He drinks to get over his pain, classic alcoholic move, and when he does recover (Good on him, by the way) HIS LIFE GETS SO MUCH WORSE! He meets a nice guy, they flirt, and the CRWBY RIPS HIM AWAY over the STUPIDEST GOD DAMN REASON! WHAT THE FUCK, GUYS?!
As a side bar, this man is what I predict Jaune Arc will become in future episodes unless one of two things happens. First, Salem dies and everyone lives happily ever after. Yay!
Alternate option... We don't talk about his alternatives. Let's just say that there's a thousand and one ways to do it, and it would piss a lot of people off just at the mere mention of it. I did it before, and it wasn't pretty.
Speaking of pretty...
Tumblr media
Mercury Black
As I'm sure you are already aware, if you've been following me for a while. I have a... distinct dislike of the Merc with a mouth. My beef with the metal-legged menace is less to do with his character, and more with the FNDM's response to him.
I get it. Mercury Black is an assassin. He was "trained" by his father, Marcus Black, and killed him, losing his legs in the process. Awesome start to a bad guy with a dark backstory.
Then we get to see him in action, and as a man who enjoys watching kick moves while mimicking them, I have to say, it is an honor and a pleasure watching the man in action.
And then we get to his actual character. Mercury plays everything off as a jokey, haha, schadenfreude kind of asshole. I get it. It's a good style, and it works great for bad guys. I mean, look at Felix from Red VS Blue.
He sets up his kill by criticizing a bookstore. Alright, got a good meme out of that.
Oh, he tricked everyone into thinking his legs were broken! Classic bad guy move!
Oh, what's he doing now up on top of that building? He's... Wait, what is he doing? Oh, god, is he-? IS HE FUCKING FILMING THE FALL?! AND HE'S LAUGHING AT IT!
And I'm totally fine with that. It's fucked, yeah, but he's a bad guy. We get it. Something we'll never forget, right?
Right?
But you did forget, didn't you? Just like when the dog murdered the cat, and looked at you with expectant eyes, you just buried the cat and put the dog outside for half a day. All while saying, "Good boy."
Mercury is that dog, and you want to give him a fucking redemption arc because he's pretty. Just like Sasuke "I tried to destroy my fucking village after my brother fought so hard to protect it" Uchiha.
Fuck you, and the tin-legged horse you rode in on, Mercury Black.
---------------------------------------------------
And that's my list... Kind of short, isn't it.
As always, I will be available for follow up reblogs where you call me out for hating your favorite characters instead of hating your least favorite characters, then proceed to point out the "nuance" of why filming a massacre and laughing about it justifies him to be forgiven, so he and reformed girl can continue sharing soft looks with each other.

(Throwing you a less angsty bone) What if Niko sneezed and turned into a bird right in front of Qrow.
What If || Not Accepting!
Then you’re going to have one very surprised old bird. As far as he knows, only he and Raven can turn into birds.
He’d probably wait until Niko was able to change back, then ask him how he’s doing that.Privately, he’d be wondering if Assia knew, and if she’d ever tried to catch him. Not that Gwen and Loren would let her.

I keep seeing stuff about Qrow being Ruby’s dad on the dash and...I dunno why people still debate this? Like it’s a fun debate sure, but there’s tons of possible reasons against why Qrow is even Ruby’s dad, plus I know ya’ll just wanna say that Monty’s word doesn’t matter...but it still kinda does?
Just wait till the show itself either confirms it or not, because at this point? Qrow ain’t Ruby’s papa, stop lambasting Tai out of having two daughters.

Thoughts on RWBY: Ice Queendom
First, reactions to the trailer:
LOOKIT THAT GRIMM WITH HIS LITTLE EARS AND ACTUAL FUR!!! THAT IS SOOOO CUUUTEEE
Saori Hayami’s Ruby Rose was one of my favorite things about the original Japanese dub; I’m glad she’s getting so much attention this time around~
And speaking of voice actors-- YOKO HIKASA ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ozpin looks super ikemen all of a sudden O.O...I know that’s probably the most natural direction to take his character design, but I kinda liked how scruffy and weird his original model looked; it made him interesting (and does a lot to inform the way I way I write for him)
The girls are all wearing lip-gloss now...and surprisingly, I don’t hate it
Gen Urobuchi AND Studio SHAFT are working on this??? Holy toledo... ...I gotta agree with what someone I follow on Twitter said-- it’s insane how much top-tier talent is constantly being attracted to RWBY’s honestly very mediocre story. Now, personally, I welcome it-- RWBY’s story may not be very impressive, but it has a VERY strong, unique concept that has the potential to be legendary in the right hands. And the more people keep trying to give it a chance, the closer we’ll get to that reality. However...this makes it even sadder that its original creators continue to treat it so carelessly. Like, LOOK at all these amazing artists and writers and actors who want to bring new life to your IP! Look at how much money people are willing to invest in it! And yet, you STILL refuse to even hire a fight choreographer for the main series?? You refuse to give the writing for each season more than an incredibly-rushed first draft?? It’s downright tragic...like, if you don’t want to show love to your best-selling franchise, hand the reins over to someone who does, because apparently there are a LOT of seasoned pros who would be glad to take your place.
Now, for my own expectations:
Based on the poster that dropped before the trailer (and certain scenes within the trailer, and the freaking title) ‘Evil Weiss’ seems to be a big possibility. And I REALLY hope they go through with it, and it’s not just, like, a coma-dream sequence Weiss has or something. PLEASE BREAK AWAY FROM THE TRADITIONAL BEACON FORMULA. PLEASE BUILD A NEW STORY THAT PUTS TEAM RWBY AT THE CENTER OF THE PLOT. DON’T PASS UP THIS CHANCE!
...Besides the sheer novelty of making a member of Team RWBY an antagonist, I think it would be cool to see Atlas as the threat it was built up to be in the first 3 seasons. Like...they really dropped that ball. ^^; More Atlesian Paladin fights, please
Plus...if the Atlas military is gonna be involved...does this mean we could maybe...possibly...potentially...have MORE IRONWOOD CONTENT???!?!?!!! (◕ヮ◕)*:・゚✧
Actually, there are a lot of characters who might be making a comeback: like my darling Adam Taurus. ^^ And good ol’ Drunkle Qrow, and Roman Torchwick, who was suspiciously absent from the trailer, but I’m pretty confident that they’ll put him in the anime. He’s a great villain; fun to watch and easy to write; if Gray can’t play him anymore, just get someone else
Speaking of voice actors (again)-- I’m SO happy that RWBY’s original cast will be doing the English dub. ^^ I was scared I’d never get to hear Jason Rose or Garrett Hunter again (I still might not, but let me dream)...and while Miles Luna may not be doing great as a writer, he’s actually an EXCELLENT voice actor, at least for Jaune. Like, he is damn good. ‘_’ If that’s the extent of his creative involvement with the anime, I’ll be a happy camper.
This is getting long...there’s a ton more I could say, but I’ll stop here. HOWEVER, before I go: the wiki mentioned ‘new characters’ for this series, and although I’m not sure how I feel about that, part of me hopes it’s true so huke’s design work gets a chance to shine. Black⭐Rock Shooter is one of my favorite anime character designs period, and I’d love to see a RWBY character with that kind of abstract, edgy, playful look.

Perks
What perks does your oc have? Generally companions have a starting perk and then two perks they may achieve depending on how the courier completes their quest line.
[Been Through the Wars]
Hades’ starting quirk adds 3+ DT and 20% resistance to drugs and poisoning.
[Cut off One Head]
If choosen the “Warrior” end to his quest, adds 25% skill points to the Explosive, Guns and Survival skills.
[Happy Homesteader]
If choosen the “Retiree” end to his quest, adds 25% skill points to the Medicine, Repair and Barter skills.
Drops
If killed, does your oc drop anything?
Tesla’s Note -A note from Tesla to Hades about their plans to party after “all of this” is done.
Shot In The Dark -Hades’ unique shotgun that has unlimited slag ammo.
3-6x Hydra 10-12x Dynamite Cleaver
Worn Kings’ Outfit -Hades’ unique version of the Kings’ Outfit
Ruined Dogtags -NCR dogtags with the details scratched out
Quests and Recruitment
How does the courier recruit your oc? Write a short description where your oc is found and if there are any requirements to recruit them as a companion.
You receive the quest “King on His Own” from Pacer after G.I Blues quest is done in the Kings’ favour. He speaks about a member of the Kings that had to be kicked out after “going psycho” from drug withdrawal. He says that this member was really impressive in a fight and he’d like to see him come back to them. Problem is, it’s impossible to get him to go sober, so he asks the Courier if they could do anything.
You can find Hades either in a vagrant camp (usually the one near the Strip) or the Atomic Wrangler. At first he’s very depressed and generally lethargic. Having high reputation with the Kings allows you to hire him as a companion, but first he asks you to track down 5 bottles of Hydra and some whiskey for his “happy time cocktail”. Upon doing this he’ll take this “cocktail” and suddenly become more upbeat and flirtious (if the courier is male). If the courier is female he’ll seem reluctant to join you, but does after a 25 Speech check.
Bringing him back to Pacer leads to Pacer being disappointed in Hades, but he requests that you keep Hades around for a bit longer to see if you can help. Agreeing to this completes the quest and hires Hades as a proper companion with his quirk.
Personal quests are an important part of developing our companions. What is your oc’s personal quest(s), and what are the different ways the courier can complete them?
After travelling for some time, there’s a random chance you’ll witness Hades going through withdrawal. He’ll become very depressed and easily angered, fighting anything that comes within his perspective. Talking to him will give you the option of giving him Fixer which prompts him to open up more about himself.
He reveals he was born in a Vault set underneath an Arts Theatre. The musical scripts found in it is where his tribe gets their names from; he’s named after Hadestown: The Musical. He left his tribe as a young adult to seek adventure but was captured and sold into slavery.
He refuses to go into anymore detail. Passing a 50 Speech Check he’ll reveal that he was sold to an older women that lived in this fancy condo for rich people. He’ll shudder at the memory then end dialogue.
This prompts the beginning of his personal quest, “Why We Build the Wall”.
After completing three quests for the NCR, Hades will mention his distain for the NCR. Through dialogue it’s revealed he was a soldier for them but deserted during the Bitter Springs Massacre. Talking to Captain Gilles with Hades in the party will prompt a conversation between the two. Gilles is disappointed, but not surprise that Hades deserted them while Hades is bitter and disgusted that they’re still here. You can resolve the conversation peacefully with a Speech check of 30.
After becoming Liked by the Legion this prompts a conversation with Hades. He is neutral towards them, saying their slavery is horrifying but at least they protect their citizens. He says he’d rather join an honest evil than a dishonest good. You can then ask him about his time as a slave. Reluctantly he reveals that his owner would beat and assault him whenever something upset her. He’s biased against women because of this (something he apologizes for if the courier is female). He is gleeful as he reveals that he escaped after she had a heartattack at a party, but quickly becomes subdued again as he’s been wandering every since.
The last condition needed is to complete the quest “High Times” with Hades in the party. Upon completion he opens dialogue mentioning he drinks and uses drugs to forget his past. He says his companion, Tesla, is a complete amnesiac due to her excessive drug use and he’s kind of been hoping to have that happen to him too. But everytime he has a withdrawal, all those feelings he’s been bottling up just come out and start the cycle over again.
Through dialogue you get two choices to help him.
The “Warrior” end, has him continue to use drugs now adding in Buffout to help control his withdrawals. He becomes tougher and buries the past completely.
The “Retiree” end has him use drugs at a half dose, using more Fixer and visiting the Followers. He regains more skills and unlocks his Shack where he gives you supplies like ammo and different crafting scrap.
Ending Slides
Another important part of companions is their ending slides. How do their endings change based on how their quests are completed and how the courier decides to handle the world around them? Below is a short template listing the different main story outcomes. Feel free to change whatever you need to fit your OC’s story.
If their personal quest is never completed…
Hades, ever drifting between highs and lows, remained a vagrant to the very end. Haunted by his past, body deteriorating from alcoholism, he took his life outside of the Strip’s Gates: a symbol of how the Mojave can chew one up and spit them out.
If the Courier sides with Legion and Hades quest is completed with the Warrior Ending
As the Legion marched into Freeside they rounded up the drug addicts and vagrants. Most were executed on sight, some, like Hades, showed a battle prowess that impressed Caeser. Hades was cast into the Arena and after many battles, was finally slain. His body was burned in a sign of respect.
If the Courier sides with Legion and Hades quest is completed with the Retiree Ending
Hidden away in his shack, Hades escaped Legion sight for a long time. Upon finding the now sober Hades, they captured him and sold him to Aurelius of Pheonix (or Lucius if Aurelius is dead) as a repairs specialist. Though once again a slave, Hades accepted his fate and eventually passed of natural causes.
If the Courier sides with NCR and Hades quest is completed with the Warrior Ending
With the NCR taking over New Vegas, it wasn’t long before deserters were brought to justice. Hades refused arrest and fought until the very end, taking out many NCR soldiers in his wake. He eventually went down under a hail of bullets, screaming his bitterness to the skies.
If the Courier sides with NCR and Hades quest is completed with the Retiree Ending
With the NCR taking over New Vegas, it wasn’t long before deserters were brought to justice. Hades was brought before a trial and accepted his imprisonment. He lived out the rest of his days working in the mines, eventually dying in a mineshaft collapse, surrounded by other Kings.
If the Courier sides with House and Hades quest is completed with Any Ending
Hades, like many vagrants in Freeside, was either ignored by Mr House or shot down when his robots came strolling into the town. Being a friend of the Courier, he was left alone by other factions in Freeside; leading to a lonely, if peaceful, life.
If the Courier makes New Vegas independent and Hades quest is completed with Any Ending
Along with the other Kings in Freeside, Hades ruled and enjoyed a free life. In the chaos he often relapsed into using more dangerous drugs and whored himself out without care. Eventually, he passed after a bad, violent trip on pyscho which lead to him being killed in self defense.

For someone wanting to get into the voltron franchise, would you suggest watching Golion (and Dairugger) first or DOTU?
Hi Anon! Thank you for the Ask!
This is a hard one! I think it would depend upon whether or not someone (you?) already enjoys anime with subtitles, and if one has a lot of patience and time. There are 124 episodes total for DotU, 72 for Lion Voltron, and 52 for Vehicle Voltron. Both Golion and Dairugger XV have 52 episodes, and good luck finding the final 16 of Dairugger XV in DVD quality with the official subs (more on that at the very end)†.
All together that’s 228 episodes plus the Fleet of Doom TV special. That’s A LOT of watching. Note, that Lion Voltron has 20 more episodes than Golion, this is because completely new episodes were made to create a second season after the show did so well. Alas, they couldn’t compete with all of the other toy-hustling cartoon shows, so the Lion Voltron story ends on an odd note with some un-resolved story, unless you count the Fleet of Doom TV special as the official ending of the story.
So what would I suggest?
Tumblr media
Option 1: If you love anime and have patience and time, then I’d recommend watching Golion, then all of Lion Voltron, then Dairugger XV, then Vehicle Voltron, and then Fleet of Doom.
Option 2: If what you really want to focus on is Voltron, then don’t bother with Golion. Watch Lion Voltron and Vehicle Voltron and Fleet of Doom, and then decide if you want to check Golion and Dairugger out.
Option 2 is kind of self-explanatory, so I’ll break down why you might want to go for option 1. Mostly, it’s that I think it would be really interesting—as a first time viewer—to watch them back-to-back so you can see what was changed, and hopefully appreciate the work that went into DotU, especially Lion Voltron. It also brings an extra meta-meta perspective if VLD and Tumblr memes were your first introduction to Voltron.
Tumblr media
Example above: The praying Keith meme comes from a scene that was partly cut for Lion Voltron due to religious connotations. In Golion, it’s a serious and—in my biased opinion—a very touching scene for Akira that reveals his spiritual nature. Being in touch with traditional Japanese beliefs, is part of his character (and arguably, an important team leader trait for the genre). It makes a lot of sense in context, but you’d never get that from DotU.
Speaking of work—a lot of work went into making Golion work for an American kid-friendly audience—from what I recall, they didn’t even have proper scripts of the original b/c they weren’t expecting to get Golion, they thought they were getting Mirai Robo Daltanius instead! I love DotU, but it’s campy and some parts don’t age well. I’m not sure what I would think if I were to watch it for the first time today as a teen or in my early 20s. You kind of have to go in expecting to laugh and cringe-cry at the weird stories that your oddball drunkle tells when he stops by once a year (not the whole thing, but there are some moments…)
It’s still a good story, but they don’t construct stories this way for animation anymore, and this was a time when broadcast rules were very strict for children’s TV. So if you’ve not watched a lot of 80s broadcast cartoons, then it’s gonna feel weird at first. Also, things were cut/censored (some obvious to cut, others less so): there’s a crucifixion scene, any-and-all references to religion, any time someone dies the dialog will mention something about robots, “Set your guns to maximum stun!”, “Wow! He sure escaped there fast!”, etc. You could play a very deadly drinking game with the obvious coverups.
Tumblr media
Above: Cossack the Terrible is more camp than menace.
It’s worth watching all of Lion Voltron just to get to the made-for-US episodes where they introduce Merla and Cossack. Their dialog gets real weird sometimes, and there’s a bit of “flies right over the kids heads” going on if you know what I mean. Lotor is incredibly hammy. If you are serious about getting into the Voltron franchise and continue into later series—including the DDP comics which I highly recommend—then you’ll want to know where Merla, Cossak, and Stride the Tiger Fighter come from.
Tumblr media
Above: Space Goddess appears to the Golion team in their hour of need. This scene is very different in DotU.
For Golion—relevant to Option 2, but also for comparing if you’re going with Option 1—I remember being super excited to track it down on IRC in the late 90s/early 2000s and then being very shocked when I first watched it. I was still new to older mecha anime at that time (was hard to find). I watched Golion with my childhood Voltron nostalgia goggles on, and they got ripped off in the first episode. This is why Option 2 works, b/c if you want to focus on Voltron, then Golion is totally skippable. It’s a different story, you’re not missing anything that will give you that sweet Voltron feeling.
If I were to watch Golion for the first time today, I’d still find it very dark, but also tame compared to some other shows. Two of my favorite things about Golion are, Sincline’s gradual descent into madness, and the way Princess Amue slap-shames some sense into Ryou—he’s a hot mess when they first meet—despite what she had just been through (keeping it vague to avoid spoilers). None of that is in DotU. In some ways, the story is deeper than DotU, while DotU is more fun and endearing.
Now onto Dairugger XV and Vehicle Voltron!
If you’re new to my blog, then you might not have seen my posts giving the elevator pitch for this show. It’s my favorite part of DotU. I’m in that small minority of Voltron fans that prefers Vehicle Voltron to Lion Voltron.
Tumblr media
Above: Vehicle Voltron has three team leaders! The XV of Dairugger XV stands for 15, as in 15 pilots.
Dairugger XV and Vehicle Voltron hold up better over time (I’ll admit, that’s subjective). They have a very different feel from Golion and Lion Voltron, even though the writers did their best to tie Lion and Vehicle Voltron together. The story is more intact between the two, with the noticeable changes being the censorship of death, the nature of the relationship between Teles/Hazar and Sirk/Dorma (my Tumblr avatar is Sirk/Dorma), and the ending.
If you were going with Option 2, then I’d still recommend watching Dairugger XV, because it’s probably one of the more unique of the super robot/combining mecha monster-of-the-week shows and there will never be another like it.
Overall, Dairugger is less dark than Golion, but Golion has the funnier humor. This is true of Lion and Vehicle Voltron as well. At least Dairugger/Vehicle Voltron has Hazar’s shower scene, and the infamous scene where Krik puts his hand waaaaay too far down the back of Jeff’s pants for a simple slip of contraband. ;-)
Best way to look at them is that Lion Voltron/Golion is like Star Wars, while Vehicle Voltron/Dairugger is like Star Trek.
I hope that helps, and I hope you enjoy your deeper dive into Voltron!
–––––––––
† Unless there’s been a recent change in streaming availability, it’s difficult to find all of Dairugger XV, especially those last episodes. I’ve only ever seen episodes 37–52 of Dairugger XV as low quality fansubs, and I’ll be damned if I pay $300+ for a used/second-hand final set of official DVDs. I have no qualms about paying for a good quality bootleg of the official release though, so if anyone knows where I can score that, then let me know. I sincerely hope that WEP re-releases them, perhaps they’ll do that if the new release of the DotU DVDs sells well. Check the Voltron store page for the new Lion and Vehicle Voltron DVD sets!

Criminal Minds Family Member Alignment (the dream team years)
Hotch: Dad. He is the exasperated but loving, strict but compassionate, hard-working but fun dad of the team. He loves his kids. His kids love him. Sometimes it’s tough love, but it’s always for the benefit of his kids. Super self-sacrificing; would throw himself in the line of fire for any of his kids. Classic protector.
Rossi: The cool rich uncle (drunkle!) that everyone loves and shows up to family dinners with alcohol and ridiculous stories. Super close with his brother (see: Dad), but he’s done a lot in life so he tends to get distracted sometimes. Seems to not take himself or life super seriously, has been through some shiz, just treats life with sarcasm and lighthearted cynicism. Until someone messes with his family. Then it’s all over for you hoes.
Prentiss: Wine aunt to a tee. Has traveled the world and has bomb stories (even better than Uncle Dave’s), super cool and def a lesbian (lesbian!Prentiss should be canon okay). Can speak a bunch of different languages from all her travels. Totally badass. Not afraid to kick a guy in the balls or punch him in the face for just looking at someone in her family the wrong way.
JJ: Hi oldest child! Super protective and has a severe maternal instinct by default. Her siblings are practically her kids and she raises them nearly as much as Dad does (ha can you tell I’m an oldest child). Incredible strength and confidence when protecting her family, but she can sometimes hide her emotions for fear of looking weak or seeming like a failure. Always forces herself to improve and be better.
Morgan: The middle child — a compassionate, playful kid who is seriously dedicated and hard-working when he gets down to it. Takes care of his other siblings and acts all protective over them — big brother personality — even towards his older sister.
Reid: The baby, the youngest, the small child who has no regard for his own self-preservation. This child tries to live up to his siblings’ reputations and pushes himself way too far sometimes. He’s incredibly resilient and surprising in the best ways. His siblings protect him for all of his life, but once he gets older and more confident, the tables turn and he finds himself protecting them just as much as they protect him. Super close with both of his siblings.
Garcia: The best friend (of everyone, but specifically the kids) who has been practically adopted by the rest of the family. Literally spends most of her time with them and loves them like her own (and vice versa). Do her and Derek have a thing or are they just friends? Who knows? She is essentially family and no one would argue otherwise. Ever.

Speaking of indicators that Drunkle Jerkbirb won't be spending the series showing up Our Heroines: the V6 train fight, where Qrow gets his bell rung but good by one raid-boss Grimm. Granted, the thing took a 5-way team effort to slay and still derailed their train car, but it neatly bookends that 'heavy lifting' convoy with Maria.
yeah
i mean, let’s do a headcount, the number of giant Grimm we’ve had in the series, and the number of times Qrow beat them (counting of course only Grimm he was reasonably nearby to have fought, i’m not gonna count the Sea Feilong or anything)
Number of Giant Grimm: 4 (Wyvern, Nuckelavee, Sphinx and Leviathan)
Number of those Giant Grimm that Qrow has actually fought: 1 (Sphinx)
Number of those Giant Grimm fought and beaten by the children in Qrow’s ‘care’: 3 (Nuckelavee and Sphinx, and the Wyvern and Leviathan each count for half)

THERE’S A CO-DIRECTOR NOW?
GRANNY KATARA’S NAME IS MARIA CALAVERA
FIRST MEXICAN THEMED RWBY CHARACTER Y’ALL
My final thoughts on the episode? God I haven’t been so excited about a volume in a while.
The animation is so much better, they went back to the kind of animation they had during volume 2 and 3 but it looks... a bit more fluid. I love it
They managed to make Jaune goofy again, and not hog screentime, which I really dig. The overall pacing is better.
Also they managed to show growth on certain characters. Like Weiss realizing she shouldn’t depend on her summons and going back to her usual fight style, and also compost boi being able to fight off grimm without ozpin taking over.
Speaking of fighting styles THEY’RE USING THE STYLES FROM VOLUMES 1-3, Ruby cutting off everything and then double tapping the grimm, Weiss with her speedy movements and constant atacking mixed in with her glyphs, I hope we get to see the Haste glyph again. Blake with the hit and run she’s known for and Yang with her brute strenght being able to casually GRAB AND THROW A GIANT GRIMM LIKE TORCHWICK’S MECHSUIT?? I love
Also in the train scene seeing Qrow and Ruby fighting side by side you can see Ruby’s style based off his, he did teach her and I love that you can see it.
The return of the anime tropes Monty would use like Nora snapping from one place to another or Ruby and Weiss sliding from the side.
ALSO THAT NEO HINT IN THE OP, IM EXCITED TO SEE IF IT REALLY IS NEO.
I can say that im excited for this volume and I think I can expect it to be as good as it deserves to be... You’d be proud of this one Monty.
