Kisses? I found this in my book It was sweet and exciting But then I knew it wasn’t Familiar handwriting… The book, it was second hand I bought it with another These were someone else’s words Someone else’s lover. It filled me with a guilty thrill I wondered about circumstance That led to its existence Was it love, or distance, perchance? A reminder to a forgetful lover To always say goodbye? Or an inducement to intimacy? So many reasons why… I’ll never know the answer My search never complete But it’s enough to embrace This moment that was so sweet. Nature Finds a Way Darkness holds things still No breath of breeze We all hold our breath The clouds take it from us. Will there be rain? Will it cleanse and sustain? Or, be destructive and uproot us? Nature finds its way. The breath, released violently There’s unwelcome movement all around Trees fall without resistance For some, this is the end. For some, they grasp tenuously Roots and trunk grasp soil Enough to cling to a semblance of life Nature finds a way. Sins and sunsets filter by New branches sprout vertically The tree now grows horizontally Nature finds a way. I am acutely aware that most of my work is the “Grade 5 level predictable rhythm and rhyme” style, so I branch out occasionally into different style. Rescued Just unremarkable paper Discarded on the ground But upon closer inspection This is what I found: The most delicate, tiny moth Blood seeping from its head Not content to leave it there I rescued it instead. Using paper to lift it gently Limiting exposure to my fingers Often we pass on contaminants The effect of which lingers. I put the sheet in the garden The moth fluttered to a tree I can’t be sure, but suspect The creature smiled at me. With some cautious flapping It tested its membranous wings Then, alighted confidently To see what the future brings. Kindness is not limited By size, I do suspect All creatures deserve empathy They deserve our respect. Quicksand You’re a shiftless sort of slippery soul Trapping hearts is what you do To touch you is to drown in quicksand But I want fall into you. When you’re near I feel the pull Sometimes I have weakened strength I won’t expose myself to risk I’ll keep you at arm’s length. You try to blind me with your smiles They allude to sensuous sin But I’ll skirt this dangerous ground I refuse to blindly fall in. I had the “I won’t fall into you” idea, followed by the idea of being trapped by unstable ground, then the quicksand idea. I stored them away and let things go where they wished as I wrote.
