Saw people talking about Drag Me To Hell on Twitter and while I had fun watching the movie with my mom a few years ago because we like campy horror, people don't talk about how racist it is.
Listen, half of the times I tell people that I'm half Romani, they're like “oh are you gonna rob me/stab me” or they tell me to sing and dance. Sometimes they ask me unironically if my mom is homophobic (no she's not, in fact my entire Romani side of the family are very supportive) or are surprised when they know I'm bilingual, I like to read and I'm continuing with my studies, because to them gypsy girls never study, they get married and have kids at age 15. And sometimes they're like “ostia qué miedo me vas a echar una maldición gitana?” (una maldición no pero igual te doy un guantazo por pesao, en plan sé más original). The Romani witch stereotype is one of the one that bothers me the most. And Drag Me To Hell? Literally every person I've met that's watched that movie is like “oh that movie made me afraid of even talking to gypsies!” So, while I did enjoy it, please remember: that movie is racist af.
