nvm this is still on my brain. kim does not like to watch harry suffer… to say that kim takes satisfaction in harry’s pain is a huge misconstruing of his character.

the “getting thrashed like a schoolboy” line comes from a board game, lol. it’s a tease, not a cruelty. there’s never any line that implies that Kim enjoys seeing Harry taking actual morale damage.

he can be amused if you fail a check, but the check is always relatively inconsequential, and again, Harry isn’t taking damage in these.

(also in both of these examples he only responds smugly if you choose for Harry to stubbornly dig in his heels. if Harry gets huffy, Kim teases. anyways. kim is a foil to every other cop we meet in the game specifically because he doesn’t view harry as a punching bag or a lost cause. gottlieb does nothing but sling jabs and glib jokes about harry’s health. torson+mclaine and the others laugh at harry’s panic attack over the radio. in response to harry’s suicide-by-car attempt(!!!!) jean yells about RCM budget. all kim’s lines in response to harry’s check failures and health-damage are consistent, explicit textual contrast against the callousness of the rest of the RCM. twisting kim’s character here requires a bad faith interpretation of the whole game.

I always assumed that the "catastrophic events" Zarpedon was talking about was referring to the Warrior and the havoc it would have wreaked on Pandora (and more since Jack definitely wouldn't have stopped at that) if it was let loose

But now I realized that no, she was referring to the course that the Seer talked about in the bl3 director's cut dlc. Zarpedon must have known about the course in some form and tried to destroy Elpis to keep Pandora closed, not Elpis' vault. The visions Jack saw before he got vault punched? That's just a snippet of what Zarpedon saw of the course and Jack actually was destined in some way, to play a part in this prophecy. The Eridians needed Jack to have this revelation so the vault hunters could discover the map in the Vault of the Warrior which would lead to the "prime instrument" reaching the Promethean vault, and so on. Or maybe Jack could have potentially been the prime instrument if he had witnessed the whole vision

Why would Dahl care about Pandora being destroyed by the Warrior when they abandoned it themselves? It couldn't have been because the eridium was a threat because then they could have just tried to destroy Pandora as well. Why only Elpis? Because "hundreds to save millions". If you break the key you can't open the lock meaning that if Elpis was destroyed Pandora wouldn't have to be and whatever chaos would come next would be kept at bay. Pandora was supposed to be opened in the vision Zarpedon saw but Lilith, being a siren, was an acausal and therefore not part of the prophecy. Zarpedon thought Dahl were the only ones who could stop the course from happening

its so sick and twisted how many people have been genuinely made to believe that the purpose of space exploration is expansively colonizing the universe and not like. the betterment of life on earth. the absurdly vast majority of active space use is satellite technology. the final frontier is not the search for a far off world yet to be conquered, but the search for a better understanding of the very planet we come from. we are looking towards earth, not beyond. and in so many ways as well! analyzing crop and soil to grow more plants. providing reliable and recent information for first responders, retracing animal migration patterns across the globe to protect their habitats. optimizing infrastructure by having a bird’s eye view on urban sprawl. and so so many more. even human exploration is not aimed at brute expansion, but at developing technology to survive and thrive under adverse condition - not to apply it a universe over, but on earth. it’s not about escape and it never was. it is about reconciliation. and it’s so sad the the mad dreams of a few unhinged billionaires and self-aggrandizing hollywood blockbusters have ever made us believe anything else.

I’ve come to the point where I can’t take anything coming from Arya’s fans seriously. I just laugh whenever I come across one of their intellectual posts like Sansa was the mean popular girl at Winterfell with her gang of Jeyne and Beth, and blinding support of Catelyn and Septa Mordane. But wait, Arya was the social butterfly, favourite of all her brothers (who all hate Sansa), Ned and everyone from the guards to the smith to the cook. So how Sansa was popular with anyone other than 4 people is beyond me.

It really is the tiniest bit odd that Martin wrote about a variety of women, women with different personalities, desires, and the unique struggles that follow, but Arya fans decided his intent with that was to say Sansa’s form of femininity was bad and that Sansa herself was evil.

Sansa puts in a lot of work to adhere to rigid demands of their society and would find a lot of happiness in the typical endgame for a lady, but there’s validity in Arya’s dissatisfaction with how limiting the role for women is, and I think we can recognize it all without resorting to a one had everything / one had nothing take. The girls kinda feel that way about each other, but since we get both POVs, we know the difficulties they each face.

Personally, I don’t know how fans read Sansa and don’t recognize someone they love—the same for Arya. I see elements of myself and my sister in them, it would never occur to me to hate either! Also, Sansa is loved by all her siblings and her parents. Writing an inability to truly understand each other or failures into any relationship is typically considered a mark of layered/mature writing, not meant to be used as evidence that a character is all good or all bad.

It doesn’t bother me that some people can’t relate to Sansa, but the lengths some fans go to justify not their disinterest or even dislike, but their hatred of Sansa is unreal. I’m a step past you in that I don’t simply dismiss them but now block everyone who writes or supports nasty takes on her. I don’t need to see that anymore.
