My Top 5 Recommendations For A Dorm Altar

(Part 1 of my Back To School Series)

1. Set aside some shelf area. If you want, you can get a small shelf specifically to sit on your desk for your altar.

2. Get some electric candles. They are fairly affordable, will not set off your dorm’s fire alarm, and I highly doubt that they will get you in trouble with your RAs.

3. Get yourself a cute teacup and saucer set. You can find them at pretty much any thrift store, and together they work as a great libation cup and offering dish set that isn’t going to weird out your roommate.

4. My personal favorite way to replace incense is to get one of those reed oil diffusers. They’re pretty cheap online and at discount stores, they will make your room smell good (obviously), and I love to use them to replace incense in the dorm.

5. If you don’t have any deity statues, or don’t feel comfortable displaying them, you can draw your own depiction of whatever gods you currently worship, use a symbol of theirs, or simply print out pictures online.

Ok so I am a rising freshman looking at making my college packing list, and I need some advice. I'm staying in a double room with an attached bath dorm-wise, and I have a few questions for y'all who have been to college recently (within the past 10 years)...

What's the most useless thing you brought that you could have done without?

What's the one thing you didn't think to bring but wish you had?

What was the stupid thing you kept fighting with your roommate about?

How hard is it to drag yourself to class, really?

What types of activities should I look for on campus?

What activities should I avoid on campus?

Should I get a penpal?

How strict are RAs in general? Is it as bad as pop culture says?

Aug 20, ‘23 — dorming

I am alone in my dorm room. After a long drive from my home with my parents, to a nauseating politeness with the landlady and worried questions, after saying goodbye to my mom, which went: “We'll leave now." A pause, and I reply. “Yeah. Sure.” and I am alone in my dorm room.

It's a familiar feeling: the anxiety of being on my own again, of a new hair style, of a new year of my college, but it's also a new one, because I moved dorms and we have some new dormmate that I haven't met yet. I'll meet them all tomorrow, but for now, I'll sleep as I'm up on the bunk bed, scrolling through social media until I'm too tired to think.

Is it bad to ask for peace?

I told my parents that I wanna move-out because they've been so noisy lately. I can't bear the chaos and the pain it brings to me. I don't know how I survived my 19 years living with them. I told them that it actually affected my performance in uni especially my scores. Guess what? They disregarded me. Said I was too much and why in the world would it affect me. They think I was overreacting. It affected me too much actually. I cried and crid the whole two weeks of exams and SLACKED OFF. I cannot focus.

The noise. They were always fighting, shouting, disturbing me while reviewing, and says discouraging words.

They won't let me go yet they're giving me every reason to leave them.
